After everyone’s new favourite £4.0m goalkeeper failed to appear at Turf Moor on Saturday, there was no Marc Guiu (£4.5m) in either of Sunderland’s pre-season friendlies at the weekend.

The on-loan striker looks like being one of the better, probably the best, £4.5m forwards in the medium term, but involvement in Gameweek 1 is questionable.

In these Scout Notes, we hear from Regis Le Bris on Guiu – and reflect on more penalty misery for the Mackems.

Chief Scout members can see official Opta data – including defensive contributions! – from the FA Community Shield via this link here.

AUGSBURG 0-1 SUNDERLAND
SUNDERLAND 0-3 RAYO VALLECANO

  • Goal: Diarra
  • Assist: Adingra

WILL GUIU BE FIT FOR GAMEWEEK 1?

Perhaps it was no surprise that Guiu didn’t feature in hindsight, as he was only captured last Wednesday.

So the question now is whether we’ll see him against West Ham United next Saturday.

On top of a late arrival on Wearside, he’s had little pre-season training thanks to a post-Club World Cup break. He was reportedly still in Hawaii on July 31!

We might be looking at a little while (potentially after the September international break?) in terms of starting contention, then, if he requires time to build up his match fitness.

Guiu was followed into the club by Arthur Masuaku at the weekend, and Le Bris discussed the pair with reporters.

“We are still in the process to improve the squad and progressively new signings like these two will help the squad, even if they started later. So, we’ll have to be patient with them, to build their foundations for the season.” – Regis Le Bris on Marc Guiu and Arthur Masuaku, to in-house club media

“We’ll see. Every day, we will make an assessment of their level and see how far we can push them through the training sessions. Lift the intensity, the contact. If they react well, they can then join the squad. If they don’t react well, we wait one day, two days, and assess again. So we will see for next week.” – Regis Le Bris on whether Marc Guiu and Arthur Masuaku will be fit for Gameweek 1, via the Northern Echo

ANOTHER MISSED SUNDERLAND PENALTY!

After Sunderland failed to score with four of their five penalties last season, a new taker was given the chance against Augsburg – and missed.

Eliezer Mayenda (£5.5m) took this latest effort, skying it over the bar.

That’s a blow for the budget striker’s FPL appeal, who has the chance to further his claim up front while Guiu is getting up to speed. Another positional rival, Wilson Isidor (£5.5m), is just back from injury,

Will he get another chance from 12 yards or will someone like Habib Diarra (£5.5m), who took penalties for Strasbourg last season, get an opportunity? We shall see.

Mayenda has not had the best pre-season in front of goal in general. On Saturday again, it was everything but the goal. Lots of good movement but wasteful finishing, including two clear-cut chances aside from the spot-kick.

He’s a real talent, the Spain under-21 international, but the finishing still needs finessing. He’s underachieved on the xG front in his embryonic career so far, indeed.

GAMEWEEK 1 LINE-UP CLUES – NO LE FEE?

Unlike the Machiavellian Eddie Howe up the road, Le Bris wasn’t messing about with his two teamsheets.

The team against Augsburg looked full strength, with the line-up against Vallecano anything but.

Based on that evidence, Enzo Le Fee (£5.0m) looks set to be a starting XI casualty in Gameweek 1.

“We’ll have two or three players like Enzo, really close to the starting XI but at the same time, we have to make a choice because we can only play with 11 players.” – Regis Le Bris

Two £4.0m defenders, Jenson Seelt (£4.0m) and Reinildo Mandava (£4.0m), are in pole position to start against West Ham.

While Seelt is very likely a stopgap, Reinildo has an excellent chance to establish himself in the side longer term. He was lively at left-back, wriggling his way through to almost get a shooting chance not long before he won Sunderland’s penalty with another dash.

Robin Roefs (£4.5m) meanwhile looks set to start between the posts, having kept a clean sheet and saved a penalty against Augsburg.

Granit Xhaka (£5.0m) impressed again in midfield and hit the bar with one free-kick, while Diarra popped up in some eye-catchingly advanced positions and scored with one of his efforts. Simon Adingra (£5.5m) supplied the assist.

Sunderland XI against Augsburg: Roefs; Hume, Ballard, Seelt (J.Jones 83), Reinildo; Xhaka, Sadiki (Tuterovi 86), Diarra; Talbi, Adingra, Mayenda.

Sunderland XI against Vallecano: Patterson (Nna Noukeu 68); Huggins, Lavery (J. Jones 68), Triantis, H. Jones; Neil, Le Fée, Browne; Rigg (Aleksic 68), Roberts, Isidor (Tuterov 68).

Worth noting how good Flekken was for PPG second half of last season and Brentford's tasty home games were all at the beginning

This season their home games are pretty poor at the start

I'm not hyping Kelleher up, I'm just saying he should hopefully be a safe 4.5 to kick thongs off with

As an aside, I heard yesterday he was great mates with Jota as well

Palace were reeling from the lost Olise, imminent loss of Anderson, Guehi speculation and lack of PS for Mateta this time last year. Would you say that was the context?

Their fixtures are a mixed ball bag this time round, but the club is on a high atm and if they're in the EC should we invest?

Munoz and/or Mateta are the two I'm looking at

    Sarr if I need a 6.5 mid

They're good, but starting fixtures are considered for a reason

They have to be really good to beat those three defences enough to outscore the FPL assets who have better fixtures. This affects likely bonus points too, as their opponents are expected to score against them

As well as they performed yesterday, it's still Mateta G, Sarr GA, Eze and Muñoz blank. Maybe DCs for Muñoz, but with -1 for GC

Before we talk about how Liverpool assets fared too. This highlights the importance of fixtures, imo

If I already owned a Palace asset and they had these three fixtures in a row with some form behind them, I wouldn't sell for that reason alone. Yet, being able to start the season elsewhere and then jump on whichever of them flies out the blocks, feels optimal to me. I'm treating Liverpool and Arsenal defenders the same way, for instance

When people pick players based on their pre-season, I actually don’t mind it

Haaland had an awful charity shield game 3 years ago and his ownership went down from 60% to 45%. He then braced in his first game and scored 36 goals that season

Same with Salah last season. Looked poor in their last pre-season game and people took him out of their teams after having him all summer. He’ll regress at some point, this season could be the time but no judgements can be made about pre-season games. It’s way more of a worry that he has Newcastle away and Arsenal in his first 3 games

    Chelsea picks:

I’m completely divided over having Pedro or Palmer in my gw1 squad. I’ve always been averse to ‘doubling-up’ in any area of my squad. But both players have the preseason form and the early fixtures to hit the ground running. What’s your thoughts please?

I thought he did well in his debut season. I expect that trajectory to continue with more experience/minutes.

Fulham are without Robinson and Sessegnon, so I'm anticipating him to do well down their left. He rotates well with Evanilson after that.

I feel there are more points to be had from an 8+ attacker than from rotating your 7th, especially without the 14+ gents

Any suggestions in particular? You've probably guessed by now I like depth. I can't fathom the thought of owning Guiu lol

Muñoz/Diouf works as first sub, covering any random defensive or attacking absence

You're unlikely to go deeper than 1st sub before an emergency FT to sell the flagged player

Evanilson to Bowen works, imo. Or perma-start Evanilson (Liverpool's new backline hasn't gelled yet) and bank the spare cash from reducing your fifth mid

Which is the better option among these if Ill be WCing early? Probably BB 2 as well.

    A. Salah + 5.5m mid + 4.5m def
    OR
    B. Gakpo + Saka + Gabriel/def upto 6m + 1m for upgrades elsewhere

If I go option B, can captain Palmer/Wirtz/Watkins in gw1 and Saka in gw2

It’s a gamble! Salah has to explode for A to be anywhere near B. I’d go B.

Thoughts? Been on no Salah since the start. Drop off last 10 games of the season & rubbish in pre season, and lots of goals to share now.

    Kelleher / Dub
    Cucu / N williams / Diouf / Dorgu / Esteve
    Palmer / Gakpo / Wirtz / Malen / KDH
    Haaland / Watkins / JP

Flirting with no JP, upgrade Gakpo / Dorgu / Kelleher / JP to Bruno / 5.5 (Munoz, porro, tark?) / Sanchez / Guiu

He will start their games, just I don’t think he’s a guaranteed 90 minute man and Grealish joining adds to that

If we’re buying an Everton attacker, we at least want them to play 90 mins. Hopefully some clarity on this from Moyes or Everton fans

Would expect ndaiye lw, Grealish cam, McNeil or new signings rw
KDH and gana as 8 and 6 respectively

Beto and Barry competing for number 9

Yep I am no Everton expert but this sounds logical. Ndiaye looked Cunha-like in attacking wise poor Everton last season - just cannot see him drop out or significantly lose minutes.

Moyes main options for 3 attacker spots behind CF:

      Grealish
      Ndiaye
      McNeil
      Alcaraz
KDH (could move to 8 role)

    Best 4.5 keeper?

Was on petrovic but lots of defensive changes there

Could do kelleher and his back up

Verbruggen and Areola not appealing to me

      Would not expect it.
Lot of new signings, but ndaiye was our one good attacker last year.
      More likely to affect KDH

I don't know what you all thinking but Salah at 14.5 million with Bou New Ars and most importantly his 'FORM' seems too much

His performance yesterday has got me thinking that. However I went without him for a period last season and it totally destroyed my rank (remember when some thought Diaz could cover him)? I’m playing it safe and starting with him. Haaland only 2 transfers away if needed.

Grealish is coming to start. There best player he’ll get the free roaming talisman role.

At 6.5 that’s hard to turn down. Especially if he can capture his old form

He never really hit highs of goal contributions. Was just central to creating moves and scored the odd goal for us.

    Legitimate question here folks.
Ignoring what you'd get with the extra funds, who scores more in the first day 6 weeks

    Ndiaye or Odegaard?

Keen to hear the general view on these two players in isolation

    1. Ze_Austin
      • 7 Years

Not considering Odegaard at all for now. Fixtures, cheaper options and recent history stand against him

That said, Ndiaye isn't my go-to option at his price either. So this is a bit of a non-starter for me

But still, probably Ndiaye due to fixtures and the unpredictability of pens
