With new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) rules and new arrivals to consider, the Scout Squad are back ahead of Gameweek 1.

This week and every week, our in-house team of Sam, Marc, Tom and Neale will discuss who they think the best FPL players are for the upcoming Gameweek in isolation.

Only five players have been given universal backing for the opening weekend…

Scout Squad Gameweek 1

The focus is only on the upcoming Gameweek with the Scout Squad, so there’s no medium-term planning involved.

The players who get the most votes are much more likely to make the Scout Picks, although the final XI can’t exceed £83.0m – so occasionally, cheaper alternatives have to be found.

Each of our writers must meet the following requirements for this feature:

  • At least one sub-£5.0m goalkeeper
  • At least one sub-£5.0m defender
  • At least one sub-£6.0m midfielder
  • At least one sub-£7.0m forward
  • No more than three players from the same club

      the 6.5 range used to be a goldmine years ago (Michu 6.0, Fellaini, Nolan, Jon Walters +++), but I think Rogers/Semenyo showed last year that its worth going nearer base price and using funds elsewhere

      6.5 is a bit too much cash to allow carrying a dud, but not enough cash to access anyone convincing. Does that make sense? FPL limbo possibly

      Gakpo comfortably for me. They can sign Isak but he’s clearly the first choice LW. They don’t have anyone who can play there naturally outside of a 16 year old kid

      Bit of a quandary, he’s done lots right but not sure he’s in great positions for FPL points. Play seems to be driven through counter attacking wingbacks and Sarr holding the ball up, linking but assisting the assist. IMO

        I think we have one of the most exciting FPL GW1s in recent memory with so many quality options, new signings galore, no obvious template due to clubs generally having mixed bags of fixtures.... yet once again the noise from the echo chamber is deafening.

        3x 4.0 defenders + Rutter and Carvalho feels a bit too risky even acknowledging sacrifices have to be made

          Rutter I think is less risky than perhaps others may think. 3 x 4.0 defenders isn’t ideal one bit. Carvalho I think is the gem for the start of the season - underpriced by 0.5m and far closer in comparison to the popular defcon mid picks.

      I just don’t think the maths works on a Salah and Haaland squad. If you look at their points to cost value, they aren’t worth it without captaincy. And obviously you can’t captain both. I think the play is get one, and captain almost all of the time. Then one becomes worth it.

    Anyone thinking for tbe same funds, Gakpo & JP are the super exciting picks that'll get 60
    mins for top teams, whilst Rogers & Bowen are those 90 minute talismen, set and forget. Really started to pay attention to those 90 minute dullard players this pre season, those sensible choices

    PSG have really struggled when they play PL teams that aren't tired from too much football.

    Spurs win or lose took PSG to penalties after finishing 17th in the PL.
