Brighton and Hove Albion v Fulham mightn’t have been the most pulse-setting game of the day but there was plenty to interest Fantasy managers at the Amex.

Here is what we saw – and what we’ve picked out of the masses of match data in our Members Area.

O’RILEY ON PENS – OR IS HE?

On Friday, Fabian Hurzeler was asked about who will take Brighton’s penalties now that Joao Pedro (£7.5m) has gone.

He didn’t tell us then but we got an answer on Saturday – sort of.

Matt O’Riley (£5.5m) stepped up to take Albion’s spot-kick on Saturday and scored.

It wasn’t actually his first penalty for the Seagulls: he also took one in Gameweek 38 of last season. But back then, and as was the case on Saturday, Danny Welbeck (£6.5m) wasn’t on the pitch.

Both O’Riley and Hurzeler namechecked Welbeck after the game.

“I knew beforehand [I was taking it]. We’ve got a few takers. Obviously, when Danny [Welbeck] is on the pitch as well. I was there, I was ready to go. We practised in training to be ready for these moments. Fortunately, it went in.”

“I think when Danny [Welbeck] will be on the pitch, he also will be a candidate to shoot the penalties. But I trust Yannick [Euvrard], our set-piece analyst, he makes the decisions together with the players. Therefore, today was the right decision. I’m happy for Matt O’Riley.” – Fabian Hurzeler on penalties

RUTTER ‘OOP’ AS EXPECTED

Welbeck wasn’t starting because, as signposted in the final two pre-season friendlies, Hurzeler went with Georginio Rutter (£6.0m) up front. O’Riley played off the Dutchman, as he did in those aforementioned warm-up games.

And it was Rutter, indeed, who won the penalty for his teammate.

It wasn’t vintage, free-flowing attacking play from either side but Brighton definitely shaded it. O’Riley crossed for Kaoru Mitoma (£6.5m) to head over a good chance, while Lewis Dunk (£4.5m) nodded into the side-netting from a corner and both Yankuba Minteh (£6.0m) and Brajan Gruda (£5.5m) wasted excellent opportunities to wrap the game up.

Maxim De Cuyper (£4.5m) offered glimpses of his attacking potential. The left-back set Rutter on his way for the penalty, while he also crossed from a free-kick for Mats Wieffer (£5.0m).

DEFCON KING WIEFFER

Speaking of Wieffer, we namechecked him in pre-season as a potential defensive contributions (DC/DefCon) machine.

He made six starts at right-back in the run-in of 2024/25, delivering DC points in four of those and, had he not been subbed off early in Gameweek 35, he likely would have made it five.

Wieffer was at it again against Fulham, reaching the required 12 clearances, blocks, interceptions, recoveries and tackles (CBIRTs) early in the second half. He went on to hit 18, the highest of any Premier League player on Saturday:

£4.5M MIDFIELDER IMPRESSES

Fulham were pretty timid, unable to exploit a Brighton defence that had looked ropey in pre-season. No surprise that the return from injury of Carlos Baleba (£5.0m) shored the Seagulls up here.

Harry Wilson (£5.5m) nodded over a decent first-half chance, while two of the seven Fulham shots that Opta counted didn’t even look like proper attempts: Josh King (£4.5m) delivering a low cross-shot and then Raul Jimenez (£6.5m) taking a heavy touch.

It was left to Rodrigo Muniz (£5.5m) to salvage a point, the substitute lashing in an equaliser from a corner. Wilson, after his fine pre-season, claimed the assist.

Emerging with a great deal of credit was King, the only starting £4.5m midfielder of Gameweek 1 (so far).

Playing in the ’10’ and keeping Emile Smith Rowe (£5.5m) out of the side, the young midfielder drove with the ball beautifully and was Fulham’s only real spark for most of the game. He nearly rounded Bart Verbruggen (£4.5m) in the first half, also racking up more penalty box touches than anyone on show:

A real talent.

He was in and out of my team over the last few days. Fortunately, when the music stopped, he was in! He looked superb today. His best moment wasn't the goal or the assist, but his contribution to the first goal. Need him to score more goals in the next 2 weeks before everyone has him.

        relief

Average points 32 thankgod on Rejinder as keeping ahead on only 38 points

Same as last season BB disaster 5 from 3 - last season got 7 - at least
out of the way & can build on main players

Wanted following for start of season but reports mentioned would not start so I'm watch this space

A lot of animosity with replies on this Wildcard generally. Yes, I played my wild card in GW3 last year after 2 weeks (got a lot of stick from my friends for doing so)
and from 5M rank and ended up 68K and won my mini league by a mile. It was a great decision in my opinion. Now I can bring in Haaland, Salah, Dobravka, Reijnders, 4 million playing defenders etc before the price rises. If I need a 9M striker I’ll use 2 free transfers to do so in future.

Rutter 6.0M possible look at changing to 5.5m or 5.0m

Rutter to a 5.5m midfielder (example)
      Bobb 5.5m
      Anderson 5.5m
      Caicedo 5.5m
      Andreas Pereira 5.5m
allowing (ITB 0.5m) upgrade Defender Esteve to a 4.5m defender

      OR

Rutter to (example) P.M Sarr 5.0m -/ Dewsbury Hall
      gives ITB 1.0m upgrade Guiu

      Muniz 5.5m
      Beto 5.5m
      Mayenda 5.5m

So we have athletes foot, and tennis elbow.
We should coin the term 'fpl managers knee'.

I seriously can't tell if the kneejerking on here is legitimate or taking the piss!

    1. AAAFootball

      Third time lucky lol

Matty/marty plays as a versatile right back.

Competition mainly from mings pushed wide and maatsen switching sides.

Last year, the most used backline was
      Cash, Konsa, Torres, Digne

Maatsen and mings were the only other backs to pass 1000 minutes.

So the verdict is, not locked in but a likely starter. Probably the best bet after torres benched and Digne is digne.

    A) Porro (mcy)
    B) Esteve (SUN)
    C) Diouf (CHE)

Most will be starting Esteve, I'd imagine, so not him.

Porro scored v City away last season, but I'd favour Diouf's home advantage over Porro. Slightly. Don't expect a CS.

Konsa's RC has skewed my plan:

    Sels
    Porro Cucurella De Cuyper
    Palmer Wirtz Reijnders Rogers Semenyo
    Haaland Ekitike

    Dubravka Gudmundsson Guiu Konsa

    1.0m ITB.

Play Porro or bring in a new defender for Gudmundsson? In hindsight, I should have started with Hartmann/Reinildo.

    1. The Son-dance Kid
      • 7 Years

In a similar position. I have to play VdV or Rodon.
If it was a 3 week RC, I'd make a transfer. But for one week, I'll swallow my medicine and hope for some luck. Of the two, I'll probably play Rodon.
CPL, eve, sun, FUL to follow for Konsa

Haha, it's a small world! Konsa probably has the best defensive fixtures, yeah. I'm not selling him when he's only 4 5m.

Hoping for a Porro attacking return is probably where I'm at.

I agree Wirtz wasn’t that bad, on corners etc. just feel semenyo could be essential for Bournemouth’s run.

But you never thought Semenyo was essential before the deadline? He was frustrating to own last year and definitely doesn’t return when you think he will in the easier fixtures. I wouldn’t rush into making any moves yet.

Semenyo's returns have been so inconsistent though. I know Wolves look rubbish but it's not like he's guaranteed to return against all the weaker teams. Might really regret this when Pool play Burnley too

You can see total number of BBs played on livefpl but I'm not sure about dividing them by rank, although within a ML you can see (again on livefpl, leagues page) little chip symbols to show who has which remaining

Still baffled by red cards not really being penalized properly. How Konsa ends up with 3 pts after being sent off is daft. Almost as daft as the BPS calculations this year ; seem to be overly weighting DEFCON.

I'm on 62 and feeling relatively good about my team, but with those players left, there is every chance you'll finish with more points that me.
Wait until tomorrow's fixtures are done.

Diouf looks the weakest link, but could easily have had a goal today. Had a shot which beat the keeper but was repelled by a defender scrambling back. Unlucky

I know we have to see all the games first before deciding however looking to GW2 captaincy do you prefer Haaland (h) to Spurs over Saka (h) to Leeds and Palmer @ West Ham?

I have Haaland and Palmer, no Saka. Bus team has Haaland captain. I’d probably go that way with Saka, but if Saka keeps pens today that could change things. See how Arsenal and Leeds look today and tomorrow

      Haaland.
I don't own Saka or Palmer, but this is why I picked haaland in my team (for GW2 and 3 captain) and not that team with either of the other two. City always mean business at the start of a season

Haaland (C) until WC until the 2nd IB for me.

I know we say this every season but there can be quite a big disconnect between the prevailing group theories of the content creators and the wider game.

I wanted a Haaland/Salah/Palmer threemium from the outset, try and have some fun. I’ll be honest, I was spooked when not one content creator/expert went that way (none in that listicle of 42 team reveals!) and similarly uneasy that only a couple of us on here were going for all three.

But then I look at my mini leagues and there’s a lot of Haaland, and quite a few Haaland and Salah teams. Not the differential I thought.

Early days of course but as a general point just thought it was worth reminding myself that one seems like the standard way to play on here - or according to the experts - often doesn’t translate to the game at large.

I think this should be an interesting, open season full of variance. The beauty of defcon is that nobody knows how it will work and affect the game - that democratising uncertainty can only be healthy!

I think defcon is the best introduction to the game for years - it means almost all starting players have a shout at gaining extra points, and are therefore worthy of consideation.

Exactly. I can see why some were resistant because the unknown element means less control for those who thought they’d mastered the game. The pool of players to choose from now could be wider than ever.

Problem with content creators is that largely they want to play it safe in case something goes wrong and their reputation suffers.

They’re just like everyone else prone to be influenced by others so if let’s say “Anderson is a great 5.5m pick” idea gets lots of traction then all content creators are repeating it.

This season I’m trying really hard to limit the noise, play my own game and have fun.
Started without Salah and Haaland and so far it’s not too bad but it takes a lot of self restraint not to be a victim of fomo 🙂

Nice one! I use FFS and listen to a couple of podcasts but I’ve never engaged with FPL content on social media for example because I try to block out that noise as you say.

I enjoy a lot of the content the creators provide (Scoutcast, Blackbox) and I don’t agree with a lot of the harsh criticism they face but equally I try not to let the (admittedly entertaining and informative) content sway my decision making too much.

I guess one of the reasons they play it mostly safe is the harsh criticism.
Often people are frustrated that their picks didn’t work out and blame the creators.

Personally I always valued Luke’s point of view and I enjoy listening to the Planet FPL guys as really like how they analyse football.

Agreed - similar thoughts & decided to get rid of BB in GW1 to concentrate on main 11 / 12 players

Decided to go with prices players I could move across to another without taking two hits.

I have had a slight knee-jerk reaction to yesterday & have temporary taken Wirtz out
for Semenyo - given me 1.5m in the bank & will again once Liverpool completed
      GW2 New (A) / GW3 ARS (H) & see if a difference with Gravenberch

Semenyo - transferred as well as covering at least the 0.1 price increase starting that
well away to Premier Favourites now has some good fixtures

Forget the goal but is Dan Ballard the first defensive gem to appear, I watched the Sunderland game, they were decent at times, he made so many blocks & clearances & their fixs are nice (did I mention once or twice that I own Mayenda)

I think the rule changes suit these cheaper defenders more because they’ll be under the cosh more.

Going to be a really interesting opening few weeks for that. I decided to wait and see with a lot of the promoted players and, having watched a lot of Championship football, Sunderland were a big wait and see for me. Le Bris is a great manager and it looks like they’ve recruited well. What I would say is that yesterday went absolutely perfectly and it might be unlikely that they produce those kind of returns regularly

Their style looks quite suited for the PL for who they are, looked to counter attack a bit, can see them getting joy with it against the more dominant sides.
