25 players in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) picked up defensive contribution (DefCon) points in Gameweek 1.

Here we find out who qualified and how many DefCons they made in total.

As a reminder, outfield players are rewarded with extra points if they meet the following criteria:

PositionDefensive contributionsPoints on offer
Defenders       10 clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles (CBIT)+2
Midfielders and forwards12 clearances, blocks, interceptions, recoveries and tackles (CBIRT)+2

PLAYERS WITH DEFENSIVE CONTRIBUTION POINTS IN GAMEWEEK 1

DEFENDERS

The most immediate takeaway here is that out of the 15 defenders who hit the DefCon threshold in Gameweek 1, 11 were centre-backs.

Even Manchester City’s Rayan Ait-Nouri (£6.0m), who we’ve not included in our count, played a hybrid full-back/centre-back role.

Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk (£6.0m) led the way.

The Dutchman racked up 21 DefCons, including 17 (!) clearances. This particular statistic accounted for 80.95% of his overall total, underlining its importance.

Marcos Senesi (£4.5m) is another defender who qualified in this match.

The centre-halves of Bournemouth were excellent for DefCon points last season, and this was evident once more on Friday, with Senesi’s defensive partner, Bafode Diakite (£4.5m), just one DefCon away from also achieving the bonus.

Three clubs provided two defenders:

  • Crystal Palace: Maxence Lacroix (£5.0m) and Tyrick Mitchell (£5.0m)
  • Newcastle United: Dan Burn (£5.0m) and Fabian Schar (£5.5m)
  • Manchester United: Matthijs de Ligt (£5.0m) and Leny Yoro (£4.5m)

Notably, each of those three teams encountered opponents who finished in the top six last season.

It is somewhat surprising to see only Dan Ballard (£4.5m) represented from the promoted teams. This is an aspect that is worth tracking in the upcoming weeks.

Meanwhile, minutes played were key in Gameweek 1: every defender who qualified for the bonus played the full 90.

Its beyond stupid. He had a release clause, so why did we not trigger it. Its expired now.

Levy can pretend all he wants that its not him making these decisions, but we all know it is. Did he really think that what, Palace would accept less than the release clause once it expired? The guy has no clue when it comes to transfers.

It’s wild - you basically had a free run at him before Havertz got injured too. Refusing to pay for Savinho too, Frank’s number one target - his lack of ambition is shameful.

Not sure about that. A £100+ player who has for whatever reason does not want to play for the team anymore. Next year he won’t be worth as much and he will be a year older. If it was my team why would I want to keep a player who will probably never give his best to the team again. I would take the best deal possible and move on

defcons just feel so easy to get vs an assist for a full back. idk, over the long run 3 CBs is probably the play, at least if you want consistent returns. regret starting with 3 full backs already

true but RAN and cash barely entered the attacking final third and arent in the box for corners/long throws like big CBs, who are still more likely to pick up the +2. mitchell the odd one out, he did well to get to 10 no doubt. just not sure, it seems so effortless to pick up the extra 2 for certain CBs

          Preferred move in GW2:

          A) Palmer --> Saka - captain
          B) Bowen --> Gyokeres (captain Salah)
          C) roll transfer
          D) other targets

              Watkins Bowen Guiu

Reijnders creating the first goal, scoring the second and assisting the third...and he's on 0.34 xGI. Might have overestimated what that number actually says.

Gordon had 7 shots (most in GW1) and managed only 0.55xG.

I’ve been very doubtful about xG methodologies, not just because they vary between different sources and are non-transparent, but 7 shots per 90’ can have much bigger implications for scorer predictions than a purely mathematical metric of fluid gane situations.

Tells you more about his desire to score. 🙂

He was one simple pass (from Elanga) away from a tap in though - not accounted in xG or the shots total.

I started with Wirtz + Ekitike in GW1. I'm on WC now. Salah is 100% locked in my team. Haaland & Salah captaincy rotate nicely over a long period of time. Best premiums for a reason.

2 is too risky if isak joins with wc used imo. big price difference here as well. im guessing you have haaland, so really depends if you want salah as well or not, with the constraints that puts on budget

if isak wasnt in the picture would say 2 if you have haaland

African Cup of Nations (AFCON) Transfers
With AFCON taking place from December 21 to January 18 this season, Managers will be given additional transfers to allow them to deal with player absence during this period.

Following the Gameweek 15 Deadline on Sat 6 Dec 13:30 and ahead of Gameweek 16 on Sat 13 Dec 13:30, Managers will be topped up to the maximum of 5 free transfers, regardless of how many transfers are available to them at that point.

These Free Transfers do not need to be used in Gameweek 16, they can be carried over between Gameweeks and used at any time.

Lacroix is an attacking centreback. He was 5th for defender goal attempts last season, only 1 shot behind Munoz.

Is it wise to get Arsenal players on WC? Their fixtures are not good until GW7. Even Leeds are going to make it difficult for them this weekend.

Can just get 1 or 2 now and start rolling FT's. Personally I am not WC'ing this early unless your team is way off the mark.

I'm very sad about this site... it is almost unusable on mobile for me, drop downs work only half the time, general speed issues persist. I click on a comment when the site is busy and it doesn't take me through to the right page, so I have to refresh ten times to correctly see the post. I had joined the ffhub discord site in the past and hated it. I always felt like the community here at ffs was so much better, but im at the point now of just watching youtube or listening to podcasts, sacking off communities like this in general, if ffs is going to continually get worse. Unless anyone knows of any better, more reliable fpl chats?

Chasing the £££, when all we ever needed was a site to chat football 5hite & hangout comparing players & teams & with a bit of luck finish in top few %.

Site hangs like copper BB, EFL & the other streams are dead, the ‘new’ updated FFS & FPL sites are not an improvement unfortunately!

Place is dead compared to years gone by, come deadline day the sight seers ‘nudists’ arrive for approval of their team with no return for those replying.

The pages fly by but no replies, sad times!

          Which is best option:

          A) Pedro to Evanilson
          B) Rutter to Reijnders
          C) Hold and roll transfer

          Sels
          Porro - Neco - Andersen
Salah - Writz - Palmer - Rutter- Rogers
Pedro - Watkins

Dubravka - Kroupi Jr - Diouf - Rodon

I need to bench one out of Kudus, Reijnders and Georginio.

The original plan was to bench Georginio, but then I watched the LEE-EVE match.

Maybe Kudus? City defense looked competent vs Wolves.

Not now. But. I'm liking the look of Dango. Carvahlo had a bad game for Brentford. Can see Dango at 6m being a regular starter and getting good G&A
While I keep an eye on him next couple of games it looks like he is heading for a price drop which would be a little bonus too

Thought he looked decent for spells last season and like you say, if he goes to Brentford then he could be a bargain. One to keep an eye on.

Who do you reckon is the best striker up to 6.5mil?
Strand Larsen, Richarlison? Maybe Welbeck if he starts next game.
I need to replace Fulkrug and tempted to do it this week as alternative is the okay Sarr or Porro.

He wasn't worth it for me last week, but I am hoping he is moving forward and I wanted to save the FT by starting with him knowing Pool was a tough start.

Porro could do well vs City, swinging those free kicks into the box vs a new goalkeeper

              Current WC draft

Like this structure and nice rotation for Gabriel difficult fixtures

              Trafford
              Munoz Gabriel Cucu
              Cunha Saka Sem Reindeer
              Haaland (c) Evan Etikike

              4mil Neco Williams, Gudmin, King

On week 4 FH to get triple liverpool for burnley.

Saka worth it with tricky fixtures and no pens? Rice at 6.5m is better value!

Saka is a one week punt.

He makes way for probably Eze week 3. Which gives cash to get Isak for ekitike in week 4 if needed after transfer deadline or Switch back to Salah for week 4 captain

Exactly my plan. I want to try my best to save upto 5 transfers. I know for an aggressive manager like me, that's not possible. But planned transfers after a wildcard will only result in taking hits soon after.

I am not going this way myself, but generally speaking GK and Haaland are the most nailed positions. As boring as City GK is, they at least start!

I wouldnt waste it myself, but I can somewhat see the appeal of not being rotated.

Ederson in the past seasons was fine. But currently do you think Trafford is safe with all the Donnaruma links? Why book a transfer on GK after a wildcard?

No not at all - absolutely wouldn't do it. More mean at some point in the season it may be viable and often it's less of a rotation risk than say RAN or Gvardiol.
