An intriguing clash at the Etihad gets the day’s Premier League football underway.

Manchester City v Tottenham Hotspur is Saturday’s 12.30pm BST kick-off, with this fixture being another stern test of the early progress that the visitors have made under Thomas Frank.

The Lilywhites performed admirably in their last encounter against elite opposition, running Paris Saint-Germain mightily close in the UEFA Super Cup. They had been thumped by Bayern Munich a week earlier, however.

Frank, interestingly, doesn’t go with the ‘five at the back’ set-up he used against PSG.

Many, including ourselves, thought Kevin Danso would come in for this fixture, with Brennan Johnson making way. Johnson, however, keeps his place in what looks like a 4-2-3-1/4-3-3.

The two alterations he has made were expected, at least: Joao Palhinha and Rodrigo Bentancur are back after their Gameweek 1 breathers to replace Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall in midfield.

Richarlison again leads the line, with Dominic Solanke warming the bench.

Pep Guardiola has also made two changes and, like Frank, has gone more attacking than perhaps anticipated.

Rayan Cherki gets his first Premier League start since his summer move, with Omar Marmoush also coming in.

Jeremy Doku and Bernardo Silva drop to the bench.

Tijjani Reijnders may be slightly more curbed than last week, then, but with Rico Lewis inverting into central midfield from right-back, the Dutchman may still get the odd chance to creep forward.

Ederson is back in the squad after missing the win over Wolverhampton Wanderers through illness. He has to settle for a place on the bench, however, as James Trafford starts in goal again.

LINE-UPS

Manchester City XI: Trafford, Lewis, Stones, Dias, Ait-Nouri, Gonzalez, Reijnders, Cherki, Bobb, Marmoush, Haaland.

Subs: Ederson, Ake, Doku, Rodri, Bernardo, Nunes, O’Reilly, Khusanov, Foden.

Tottenham Hotspur XI: Vicario, Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Spence, Sarr, Bentancur, Palhinha, Kudus, Johnson, Richarlison.

Subs: Kinsky, Danso, Vuskovic, Davies, Gray, Bergvall, Odobert, Tel, Solanke.

Watching last weeks game he often dropped to his box to pick up the ball & start the next attack.

I don’t think we can say he avoided Pep roulette after two matches … particularly when Rodri and Foden arent fully fit yet

"Jeremy Doku and Bernardo Silva drop to the bench." was music to my ears. Had Reijnders from the start and quite happy to keep as long as he gets starts, given his price.

Haaland's first season I didnt own him but I earned quite a lot of money betting on him to score (or score 2+ games if the opposition was bad) every game to hedge against FPL results. He was a machine.

Is this season another ~1 goal per game season for him?

The benefit with reijnders is his role in the team is way more nailed than any winger or attacking midfielder

      1. JT11fc
        1 year, 2 months ago

True but once Rodri is fit he might be a rotation risk also

I don't have him yet either actually but I think he'll be relatively nailed

Rodri, Silva, Gonzalez and Reijnders.. 4 into 2. He may well be a strong first choice but we can’t conclude yet he is nailed.

He's been in poor form and is carrying an injury that needs to be assessed and you need to be proactive in FPL use the funds to jump on other players and improve your team like everyone else

Actually being “proactive” can often hurt as much as help in this game. Patience is key. “Proactivity” is those who sold Joao Pedro last week …

It's a key mistake to undervalue information at this stage of the season in favour of chasing bandwagons

              1 year, 2 months ago

Completely different scenarios one is a 7.5m fwd who isn't injured and isn't the second most expensive midfielder in the game that was reactive behaviour dropping Pedro for blanking one game when you need to be proactive in FPL and dump Palmer

Palmer might well be a sell, but I’m highly dubious of anyone who uses the word proactive. It’s normally code for I’ll sell players regularly on a Saturday or Sunday night without complete information and will describe the inevitable hits as “aggressive”. This generalisation might not hold for you.

Need a huuuge Haaland (and RAN, Reijnders, etc) sized sofa this afternoon with no City.

Here’s hoping for a Kudus and Porro masterclass, and Spurs holding City to nil… 😆

Diouf is going to be Robinson Mark 2. Great attacking threat, but horrendous defence. Which makes him a 3/4 point merchant at best. Some games it will be 0 or -1 given how horrendous West Ham are. Its a shame these players don't play in good defences or they would be great picks. Really surprised no club went in for Robinson, if Pool didn't get Kerkez, 100% they would have got Robinson.

He's definitely first team in the Leicester XI. He is quite good, but not really Premier league ready. He probably should stay put in the Championship for a year but he's keen for a move upward.

2 things before the game starts:
    - People see 4 atb but forget how strong Frank’s Brentford were against City, expect Tottenham to defend well
    - Cherki’s end product is one of the best in the league, if he becomes as close as regular starter as possible then he’s essential at 6.5
