In Gameweek 2 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 28 players earned defensive contribution (DefCon) points.

Here we find out who qualified and the total number of DefCons they accumulated.

As a reminder, outfield players are rewarded with extra points if they meet the following criteria:

PositionDefensive contributionsPoints on offer
Defenders       10 clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles (CBIT)+2
Midfielders and forwards12 clearances, blocks, interceptions, recoveries and tackles (CBIRT)+2

PLAYERS WITH DEFENSIVE CONTRIBUTION POINTS IN GAMEWEEK 2

DEFENDERS

Once again, it is centre-backs who dominate this list.

A total of five defenders, all of whom are centre-halves, accumulated 14 DefCons in Gameweek 2, including Marcos Senesi (£4.5m).

Bournemouth centre-backs were DefCon magnets in 2024/25, a trend that has continued into the new season, irrespective of the personnel involved. In the match against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, both Senesi and Bafode Diakite (£4.5m) banked extra points.

Senesi, for his part, is one of only seven defenders to have received the bonus in both Gameweeks 1 and 2:

  • Dan Burn (Newcastle United)
  • Matthijs de Ligt (Manchester United)
  • Maxence Lacroix (Crystal Palace)
  • Marcos Senesi (Bournemouth)
  • James Tarkowski (Everton)
  • Sepp van den Berg (Brentford)
  • Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool)

Elsewhere, three newly-promoted defenders qualified for extra points: Burnley’s Hjalmar Ekdal (£4.0m), Leeds United’s Joe Rodon (£4.0m) and Sunderland’s Reinildo (£4.0m).

Minutes played were once again crucial: every defender who qualified for the bonus in Gameweek 2 played the full 90, except Michael Kayode (£4.5m).

Regarding the leading defenders for DefCons thus far, Virgil van Dijk (£6.0m) is in the lead with 36. Senesi follows in second place with 29, while Maxence Lacroix (£5.0m) ranks third with 28.

MIDFIELDERS

As many as six (!) Brentford players collected two points for their DefCons in Gameweek 2, including three midfielders.

The Bees, who ceded 76.4% possession to Aston Villa, defended deep, packed the box, and, in a gritty display, earned a priceless 1-0 win.

Brighton and Hove Albion’s Mats Wieffer (£5.0m) also qualified. He’s the only midfielder to have picked up DefCon points in Gameweeks 1 and 2, although he has played at right-back in both matches.

The same applies to Everton’s James Garner (£5.0m), who has been deployed as a makeshift left-back in the absence of Vitalii Mykolenko (£5.0m).

Bruno Fernandes (£9.0m) needed just one more clearance, block, interception, recovery or tackle (CBIRT) in Gameweek 1, but he hit the target against Fulham on Sunday. Those extra points effectively cancelled out the two he got deducted for missing the penalty.

Elsewhere, Elliot Anderson (£5.5m), Jack Grealish (£6.5m) and Lucas Paqueta (£5.9m) finished on 11 DefCons in Gameweek 2, just one short.

No forward reached the required threshold, with Richarlison (£6.7m) and Igor Thiago (£6.0m) the closest on eight.

    Thoughts? On a WC…

    Sanchez / Dubravka Gabriel / VdV / Munoz / Reinildo / Esteve Salah / Reijnders / Cunha / Elanga / Sarr Pedro / Wood / Ekitike

1.1 ITB. Clearly the low ownerships in my team are Cunha and Elanga. Early days but only clocked 19 points this week.

Gabriel's a fine long-term pick, but underwhelming for the short term. Could pay off, since I sense you will need FTs of plenty of other things, like spending that money ITB and improving that general middle-of-the-road feel to get players that emerge as potent points machines!

          It looks v good

Might all change by the international break again

No Saka, Palmer uncertain and possibly out, Bruno misfiring and Wirtz waltzing the wrong way means there's plenty to spread the cash in midfield.

I'd prefer Haaland still, including for captaincy in Gw4.

Liverpool should beat Everton but it's the 12.30 KO so might be by the odd goal again.

either options will be good long term tbh

      hard to judge so far

      Pedro blank at crystal palace
      Wood blank at crystal palace

      Wood hauled against brentford
Pedro hauled against dire west ham

so its a tiebreaker so far

you would say brentford are the better team in terms of stability considering west ham are shambolic even with this 3-2 loss to wolves yesterday

    6. Raoul Nogues

      Both seem good options
      (I have them both)
Maybe Wood who will play West Ham, Burnley & Sunderland in the next 4 GWs... if you are OK with the fact he could be rested against Arsenal (if he plays against Australia in Auckland 4 days before)

      I'd go Timber

But Calafiori is pretty advanced and you've missed the Timber haul.

Not looked at the Arsenal defence since pre-season in any detail tbf.

      calfiori for me
but long term its a tricky one
of course both risky options of stability

    3. Deulofail
      • 10 Years
      10 months, 21 days ago

Neither, but Calfiori. Both are under strong threat of rotation, as you surely know.

Timber scored from set pieces, which isn't going to happen a lot. Calafiori is the marauder who will end up in the and box more often in open play and take a higher position in midfield than Timber, most likely, though we don't know the effect of Eze and... tactics, yet.

I think Calafiori is slightly further ahead of MLS than Timber is ahead of White. But we could easily see MLS play against Salah, though, or even Timber on the left if White is fit. It's a total minefield and I would avoid it altogether.

I would avoid it! ALL TOGETHER!

silly to consider selling Munoz for Van den Berg this GW? frees up a mil. Target DC points, he has some goal threat. averaged more shots per 90 than 9 attacking returns Collins last season for example. bagged 3 goals for Mainz the season before. new coach obviously will care about being good at set-pieces, loads of good long throws from Kayode. found it interesting that brentford were happy to defend only a 1 goal lead at the weekend, maybe they'll be more defensive minded this season, unlike last?

Hmm but with defcon in the play this year, he would not even be top 10 defender pointwise...

          • 11 Years
          10 months, 21 days ago

yea, i feel that way too tbh, even as an owner. the 4.5/5mil CBs with abit of goal threat appeal so much now

if defcon was a thing last season, munoz would have hit the 10 threshold 7 times, not that bad tbh but if some CBs can get it 20+, its a huge head start.

munoz would have to get 5-7 goals imo this season, its possible. alot depends on Pino who they have just brought for creativity. dont know enough about him

          1. Pedersen
            • 7 Years
            10 months, 21 days ago

That is it this season. I can't tell which defenders will do well. I feel like some 4.5 are the best to take, and more expensive ones won't get more points over the season.

            1. F4L
              • 11 Years
              10 months, 21 days ago

if you can find a 4.5 you think can get 145-155, or a 5 that can get 155-165, think you're set. the 6mils would do well to get 175-185, even then that not exactly value for money. decent amount more no doubt, but funds further forward could be put to better use.

the trouble of course is picking the right 4.5 and 5s. with the 6mils its much easier. the thing is you dont even need the new Forest for example, just a solid pick that you think can average a clean sheet every 4 matches, and get 2-3 goals over the season, with maybe an assist or 2 for good measure. by now the top DC monsters have/are showing themselves, so at least there's that to help narrow it down.

Dorgu this week and then Cash if he plays (or Konsa for more security)
Spurs assets, I reallly can't say which

With my squad, what’s my best option here, haven’t properly looked at chip strategies yet but can see a lot of people going A

    A) Palmer > Cunha, FH GW4
    B) Palmer/Guiu > Semenyo/Wood, save FH

    Sanchez
    Porro Munoz Neco
    Salah Palmer* Bruno Rutter* Reijnders
    Watkins Mateta

    Dubravka Andersen Esteve Guiu

Rate my free hit gw3 team

Too exposed to highly owned players doing well?

    Pickford (Wol A)
Burn (Lee A) Porro (Bou H) Milenkovic (WHU H)
    Grealish, Gibbs-white, Mbeumo (Bur H), Cunha (C)
    Wood, Richardson, Pedro (Ful H)

    Dubravka, Damnsgaard, Tarkowski, Dorgu

    Thanks

Already done 2 transfers for free, Saka Füllkrug —> Wood Semenyo

    Sels
    Cucu Porro Neco
    Palmer* Semenyo Gakpo Wirtz
    JP Wood Watkins

    Verbruggen - Rutter* VdV Diouf

Another -4 for Palmer out? As both him and Rutter probably won’t feature, VdV will play…

    Kelleher | Valdimarsson
Gabriel VDV Williams | Konsa Rodon
    Salah Wirtz Rogers Sarr Minteh
    Haaland JSL | Guiu

    2FTs, which move is better:
    A) Minteh + Wirtz + Guiu —> Reijnders + Anderson + Pedro (-4)
    B) Minteh + Wirtz + JSL —> Semenyo + Reijnders + Wood
    C) Any other suggestions (keen to get in wood or Pedro, remove Minteh)

How would you upgrade this FH team (5.4 ITB)?

      Pickford (Dubravka)
      Milenkovic Murillo Tarkowski (Burn Hartman)
      Cunha Elanga Grealish Dango Damsgaard
      Haaland[c] Wood (Guiu)

Others I'm interested in (approximate priority left to right):

      Pope Sels Kelleher
Kayode Schar VDB Cucurella Porro Livramento Dorgu Hall
Mbuemo Barnes Ndiaye Johnson Fernandes Kudus
      Thiago Pedro Watkins

I'm not so convinced on the Everton clean sheet, they were very fortunate last week, I wouldn't double up. Maybe spread the risk with Dorgu in there.
Despite how poor Manchester united have been, maybe another midfielder like Bruno but i can understand why you want to take that on.
I like Watkins over Damsgaard, he doesn't feel like explosive enough a pick for a Free Hit team. I also like Pedro on pens (likely) if Palmer is out

Are premium options worth the money with both Salah and Haaland looking less dangerous ?

    3. Raoul Nogues

With defensive contributions, could 4/4/2 or 4/3/3 be the play moving forward, or is it too soon to tell ?

we generally do more broad questions than specific team replies in the Q&A, so I'll reply to the above comment instead

Is selling Salah for Gakpo worth it in order to free up so money? I have Haaland.

Well he looked better in games than Salah so I did on WC..

If you already have Haaland, what do you need to free up money for?

So this is my team, started the season pretty bad like a lot of people, could either do some transfers or I might FH this team this week, then WC the following week.

    Sels
    Toisin Porro Diouf
Rogers Palmer** Reijnders Salah (c) Wirtz
    Watkins Evanilson
    Dubravka RAN** Guiu Esteve

    ** injured

    0.0 ITB 1ft

    1. Palmer and Watkins to Haaland and KDH/other 5.0 fodder for -4

    2. Palmer and Evanilson to Johnson and Wood for -4

    3. Wirtz and Watkins to Gakpo and Jao Pedro for -4 and bench Palmer if he's out

    4. Palmer, Wirtz and Watkins to
Anderson, Grealish and Haaland for -8

    5. Free hit instead.

    thanks!!

Similar issues for me (Saka for your Palmer, Rutter for your RAN, the Rogers/Watkins double, and an even lighter bench, no strong captaincy option besides Salah) and going for FH

Konsa (CRY H) Rodon (New H) and Anderson (WHU H)

Valdimarsson on the bench stupidly tho doubt Dubravka would get much more

That's not bad actually. I'm considering Anderson, largely for corners v WHU, for my free hit team. Newcastle will probably create plenty of chances but with that depleted attack Rodon has a decent chance of CS + DC

I reckon Newcastle rock up and beat Leeds ...

        Sorry to say.

They've got enough with Barnes, Elanga, Murphy etc to do so.

Should be another cracking game, Saturday evening slot

Maybe, maybe... I don't think I'm over-optimistic about us this season, but it feels like as good a time as any to play them with no Gordon / Isak / Isak-replacement / Tonali / Joelinton / Schar

Any thoughts on Elanga as a replacement? Not heard him mentioned much but looked a threat in both game

Played WC this week and oh man its so hard. All of a sudden 3 striker spots is NOT ENOUGH!!

    How does this look?

    Sanchez/Dubravka
    Calafiori, Porro, Senesi, Anderson, Reinildo
    Salah, Johnson, Cunha, Reijnders, King
    Ekitike, Wood, Pedro

    I want.... Grealish, Haaland, Sarr

    Sels
    Milenkovic, Porro, Rodon
    Salah, Palmer, Rogers, Reijnders

Draft League question. I have Fulkrug as my 3rd F. Muniz, Mayenda, Beto and Barry are available. Would you make transfer…not thinking about this weekend, but for rest of season. I am leaning to Barry and Muniz being better than Fulkrug, but am not sure. Any advice appreciated. Cheers, Malcolm

I'd go for Muniz I think. Probably still shares a decent chunk of mins with Raul but I can see him taking over as no.1 during the course of this season. I have him in my 7 player draft league too
