Out with the defence-first old, in with the all-out-attack new?

That’s the simplistic (and not inaccurate) reading of the managerial change at Nottingham Forest following Monday’s dismissal of Nuno Espirito Santo.

In his place comes Ange Postecoglou, back in the Premier League after his two-year stint at Tottenham Hotspur ended in June.

In this piece, we ask what the first managerial casualty and hire of the season means for Fantasy managers.

We’ll not rehash the potted history that we included in our Scout Report two years ago; Postecoglou is not the relatively unknown quantity of before.

Instead, we’ll focus more on his time at Spurs.

ANGE: THE SPURS YEARS – AN OVERVIEW

2023/242024/25
Goals scored74 (7th)64 (7th=)
Goals conceded61 (7th=)65 (16th)
Clean sheets7 (12=)6 (16th)
xG68.95 (6th)59.70 (9th)
xG conceded64.55 (14th)64.36 (17th)

In summary: goals and lots of them!

Spurs both scored and conceded 60+ goals in each of Postecoglou’s two seasons at the helm.

The expected goals at either end (xG/xGC) are in the 60-70 ballpark, too. In the top half for xG in each year, the Lilywhites were in the lower reaches of the table for xGC.

Clean sheets-wise, Spurs didn’t get more than seven in either campaign.

NUNO: THE FOREST YEARS – AN OVERVIEW

2023/24*2024/25
Goals scored32 (12th=)58 (9th=)
Goals conceded37 (9th=)46 (6th=)
Clean sheets1 (18th=)13 (2nd=)
xG31.52 (9th)46.57 (15th)
xG conceded27.75 (4th)49.56 (9th)

*from Gameweek 18 onwards, the point of Nuno’s appointment

Nuno’s Forest were almost a mirror image.

The clean sheets didn’t materialise in his first half-season in charge but the underlying data was there: they ranked fourth for xGC from Gameweek 18 (Nuno’s first game as head coach) of 2023/24.

The Tricky Trees followed that up by finishing joint-second for clean sheets in 2024/25.

As for goalscoring, 58 was a decent tally last season. But Forest massively overachieved (+11.43) on the xG front, relying on ruthlessness – especially from Chris Wood (£7.7m) – rather than a high volume of chances created.

THE XG RACE: NUNO’S FOREST V ANGE’S SPURS

    If I'm considering a -8, that's WC territory, right?
    It would be something like
Sels, AWB, Sarr to Raya, Lacroix, KDH

Just do AWB and Sarr out for a -4

That leaves me with double forest defence against arsenal.....
I'm just not sure how different my WC will be gw4 vs 6 or 7

I don't see how folks would advise using the WC or taking -8 with the limited info you have provided.

Draft a WC team and see how many changes you would make.

I can’t work out whether I should bench a midfielder to bring Guehi in. Was thinking of dropping Bruno but feeling nervous. Any thoughts?

    Sanchez
    Munoz, Timber, Porro
    Bruno, Grealish, Semenyo, Enzo
    Haaland, J Pedro, Ekitike

    Dubravka, Guehi, Reijnders, Esteve

That is a bit of a toughie, can go either way as both picks are pretty even, I think I still prefer the LaCroix & Andersen combo, but if feeling more risky and adventurous, then Livra & Guehi imo 🙂

Think Lacroix is more than capable of matching him over the course of the season. Once I’ve played my BB though, downgrading one of Semenyo/Grealish/Elliott and making that move is possible.

On WC. Trying to find balance between defon and attacking defenders.

    Which is best option:

    A) Raya & Cucurella
    B) Pope & Gabriel

And best pick from these two:
    1) Munoz
    2) Lacroix
    3) or just double up on them both and leave Andersen out

    Other defenders will be:

Anyone playing UCL fantasy? My team atm -

    Guvenc - Meret
    Porro - Timber - Calafiori - Acerbi - Bellanova
Yamal - Vinicius - Xavi Simons - Golcalves - Chiquinho
    Kane - Mbappe - Pavlidis

3.5m in the bank for Chiquinho + Pavlidis âž¡ Olise + Thuram in GW 2.

WC GW 5 and Limitless GW 7 is the plan.

    Thoughts? 🙂

Be wary of Vini's minutes. He started one of their three league games on the bench.
And as much as I want a spurs attacker for their fixtures, it looks like a bit of a minefield! Either see how they go this weekend, or consider that as your planned transfer for MD2 (once we have more info) and simply start with Olise? Bayern can put goals past anyone and they are at home

And I haven't exactly worked by chip strategy out yet, but I know I won't use any chips for the first 4 MD's, so your chip strategy (as a whole) looks like the way to go.

    Petrovic / Dub
    VVD VDV Guehi Senesi Gudmonsson
    Salah Ndiaye Ndoye 7.0 King
    Pedro Haaland Wood

    - unsure who to put in as 7.0 option I did have Sarr but with him being injured unsure who to replace him with…
    - Xavi Simons could be interesting but probably won’t start GW4

Get an Everton attacker. The new stadium is a very big factor in making Everton an attacking team. They want to keep the atmosphere lively. Plus the new signings of Grealish & KDH has made them a much better team attacking wise. Get any one of Grealish, Ndiaye or KDH, depending on your budget. All three of them have their own merits and are equally valuable options.

I think Ekitike is one of the most interesting picks in the game atm. Those that don't have him can't comfortably buy him because of the threat of Isak. And yet he has two great fixtures, plays upfront for the best attack and has shown form, confidence and finishing ability.

If he scores double digits in the next two games I wouldn't be surprised and I think very few 'template' managers own him.

If for some reason you're on FH this week he'd definitely be in for me.
