In the Suspension Tightrope, we look at the players close to a ban, already suspended or returning from the naughty step in Gameweek 18.

As we’ll explain below, there’s not long to go until Premier League players are free – at least in the short term – from the ramifications of yellow card accumulation.

HOW MANY BOOKINGS RESULT IN A BAN – AND WHEN ARE THE CUT-OFF POINTS?

Gameweek ban 18

We’ve taken the above table from the Football Association website. It details the cut-off points for the various yellow card thresholds.

The one we’re concerned about right now is the five-caution mark. This is an unwanted target that Premier League players will have to avoid for their team’s first 19 league matches.

There have been no postponements this season, so that’ll be after Gameweek 19 for all 20 clubs (barring any Christmas cancellations!).

Punishments for yellow card accumulation are competition-specific, whereas suspensions for dismissals cover all competitive matches.

ON FOUR YELLOW CARDS

Gameweek ban 18

There are nine new additions to the 33-strong list.

Everton pair James Tarkowski (£5.5m) and Vitalii Mykolenko (£4.9m) are two of them, for those considering a Toffees defender for their favourable fixture swing.

Three Spurs players also joined the list: Micky van de Ven (£4.6m), Richarlison (£6.4m) and Rodrigo Bentancur (£5.3m).

Ibrahima Konate (£5.4m), Nico Gonzalez (£5.9m), Nikola Milenkovic (£5.1m) and Enzo Le Fee (£4.9m) round off the new entries.

Antoine Semenyo (£7.7m) and Bruno Guimaraes (£7.0m) are among the other well-owned names who were already on four bookings.

ON THREE YELLOW CARDS

Gameweek ban 18

There are 48 others who have a bit more breathing space on three yellow cards.

They’d have to be booked in both of the next two Gameweeks to pick up a ban.

Marc Guehi (£5.3m), Virgil van Dijk (£5.9m), Igor Thiago (£7.1m) and Phil Foden (£8.9m) are among the well-owned names here.

The in-demand Harry Wilson (£5.8m) is also on the list.

SUSPENDED IN GAMEWEEK 18

FPL notes: Szoboszlai injury, Slot on Salah + Ekitike's form 6

Only one player reached five yellow cards in Gameweek 17 but it was a significant name: Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai (£6.7m), who features in 700,000+ FPL squads.

He’ll be back in Gameweek 19.

Xavi Simons (£6.5m) and Cristian Romero (£5.0m) both serve suspensions for red cards they received on Saturday. Simons is banned for three matches, Romero one.

Luke O’Nien (£4.0m) still has one match to go of a three-match ban, meanwhile.

Hannibal Mejbri (£4.8m) is three games through a four-match suspension for misconduct – but as he’s off to AFCON, he’ll serve the rest of his ban while in Morocco.

Mykhailo Mudryk (£4.9m) remains indefinitely suspended by the FA.

BACK FROM A BAN IN GAMEWEEK 18

FPL notes: Dunk injury, Ait-Nouri threat + Delap benched 4

Casemiro (£5.5m), Yerson Mosquera (£4.3m), Lewis Dunk (£4.5m) and Diego Gomez (£4.9m) are all back from suspension in Gameweek 18.

A hit can be worth it, especially if it is to replace injured pinnacle for a few weeks. Is Cunha/Gorden your ideal Bruno replacement? If you had 11m, who would you want ideally?

The way I look at taking a hit is, will I come out positive within 4 gameweeks. Kind of like a forward looking Form score. That’s why Rogers is solid imho. I just got Rogers myself to replace Bruno (on a free). Could have gone for Cunha instead, but think Rogers likely outscores him over 4 weeks.

And if you get Ekitike as upgrade as well all the better. Worth the -4

On wildcard and struggling to get Ekitike in. Not enough TV! I'm maxed out. KDH injured has wrecked me!

Have already made a few trades. I can't get a better keeper than Verbruggen. One of the defenders will be used to get Gab back.

Any thoughts? Semenyo & Thiago > 6.0m & Ekitike? Every time I sell someone it bites me though; last few weeks Rogers, and just now Pedro!

    Bruno>Rogers
    KDH>Rice
    Darlow>Verbruggen
    Hartman>Heaven

    Verbuggan Dubravka
    Cucerella Gvardiol VanDeVen (Rodon Heaven)

I'd park the Gab thoughts for a couple of reasons. Firstly Arteta is a massive liar and his days and evolving references are tedious as they are ridiculous. Secondly if Arsenal get through in the cup tonight which seems likely as the wheels have come off Palace then their run through to the end of January looks horrendously busy, playing every midweek and weekend basically. There is no chance Gab comes back into that and just plays all the games imo, there just is not a need for it with their squad depth.

Sorry didn't answer the other bit. Yes to selling Semenyo (very bad away team/form, pretty bad home fixtures in between them) and I think the busy period will catch up with Thiago too who apparently looks knackered with Brentford barely playing as it was. Both are fine to sell.

Leaving as is but swapping Thiago > Ekitike who since starting tinkering last night and having listened to Joe's Transfer Targets pod I now consider a wildcard priorty, I am 1.8m short. Considering bringing in a Miley for Rice and playing until KDH is back. Then have 0.9m to sort out VdV and Verbruggen or Guiu to Krupi.

Its a shame Howe is such a rotation freak as I really want Gordon not Cunha for this next stretch. Probably not sensible taking a known minutes risk over such a busy period. I don't have a good feeling about this Cunha train, just feels like one of these Man Utd banter trains we've been on too many times over the past few years. Good fixtures but they are just going to suck aren't they? Rogers might just be the play and accept the next two aren't great.

Feelings wise Cunha is not good. Owned him for the last 4 and he scored 25 points, which is good.
Having watched all those games, I was disappointed every time as he should/could have gotten more.

They (Man U) are one of the more attacking teams, and he becomes their focal point right now for set pieces, pens and playmaking - Cunha was a great pick at a terrible Wolves team and with these fixtures will be a good pick again.

No one in here knows who will be on pens. Sesko has a very good record, but might not be able to play all the minutes with 4 games in 2 weeks.

Good point. Cash bad fixtures, Semenyo one foot out(at least for me). No one will want to play Xhaka and Le Fee vs City anyway. That leaves Tarkowski and Bruno G. Maybe Donnarumma. VDV is highly owned, but I reckon it's mostly casuals.

My own thoughts on Strategy for this gameweek:

    1. Ekitike and Cuhna feel like the most impactful transfers in for obvious reasons, so should be priorities.
    2. I wouldn't be taking a hit after just receiving 5 freebies.
    3. I wouldnt be over hoarding transfers either! Have seen a number of creators proudly sitting on 4 but playing Anderson against City which is wild to me. This year with bonus transfers and double chips we have to be optimising weekly as well as rolling for the mid term when we can.
    4. Rogers is world class at the moment but has two brutal fixtures coming up so worth waiting on him.
    5. Bournemouth hace conceded serious XG so happy to give Thiago one more week.

    What are you thinking?

    1. Sir Michael Taker
      • 12 Years
      7 months, 5 days ago

Agree with most of that. Not sure on Cunha but it does make sense from a purely non-emotional standpoint. I keep seeing the argument he played well in that Wolves side last season but the issue I take there is they were always the first choice at Wolves and he knew them and played regularly with them for 2 seasons. This will by and large be the Man Utd bomb squad who are not familiar with each other or him and they could just have a really bad attitude towards the club because they've been bombed. I have a bad feeling they are going to be really bad in these games. The dilemma I have is that point 1 about Ekitike and point 5 about Thiago are at odds with each other for me as I probably need to lose 5 to make 1 happen which I'm open to doing and probably will be but wouldn't be surprised to see him do well vs Bournemouth for the reasons you stated. Part of my reason for losing him probably is Andrews has managed his minutes when they have had midweeks and I'd imagine that may well continue over the coming weeks.

It is hard to overlook the now uncontested Liverpool striker with 3 of the next 5 fixtures being as good as it gets. For me Thiago has to go it feels the right play.

I'm going to see how Man U look v New first before maybe doing Semenyo to Cunha.

I've used my transfers like a kid in a sweet shop but agree that would only take a hit if I cannot field 11.

      • 7 Years

      1. I don't necessarily agree Ekitike should be prioritised based on point 5, maybe if playing 3 up top

      2. Team dependant

      3. If folks don't have the funds or don't like the replacement then Anderson 4-pointer is fine against City

      4. Agreed, not the time to buy Rogers

      5. Agreed

Chelsea make initial enquiry to Antoine Semenyo camp over conditions of Jan switch. #CFC already intended to sign 1 attacker next summer so move for #AFCB forward would be accelerating plans; among multiple contenders @TheAthleticFC after @SkySportsNews

    Via David Ornstein.

    Semenyo is a wanted man!

It's a fair point, could be a new strategy though. Not sure they really need him when they have Garnacho, Gittens, Pedro Neto, Estêvão and Palmer.

So quick question, I’m WCing to set up BB in 19.

I have 8 forwards/midfielders which = bench headaches BUT a decent bench boost

    Does that look ok?

    Martinez (Dúbravka)

    Chalobah - Guéhi - Gab/WD (Dunk) (Mukiele)

    Cunha - Rice - Rogers - Foden - (Semenyo)

    Ekitiké - Haaland - Calvert
