Sunderland, who were without Robin Roefs (£4.9m) and only had Granit Xhaka (£5.1m) on the bench, secured a narrow 1-0 win over Leeds United.

Here are our Scout Notes from Elland Road.

ROEFS INJURY LATEST

Roefs was absent from the matchday squad on Tuesday, a blow to his 11.3% ownership.

Ahead of the match, Regis Le Bris confirmed that he had picked up a hamstring injury.

“A minor hamstring injury. He stretched his leg during a good save for us at Bournemouth, but unfortunately, he picked up an injury. I hope it won’t be too long.” – Regis Le Bris on Robin Roefs

Le Bris later revealed Roefs could be out for two to three weeks.

“It’s not clear at the minute because it would be symptoms-based. It might be two, maybe three weeks. We’ll see for Newcastle [Gameweek 31], we’ll see, we’ll have to wait.” – Regis Le Bris on Robin Roefs

Bertrand Traore (£5.5m), meanwhile, had to be withdrawn late on with a potential knee injury.

Le Bris also said Jocelin Ta-Bi (£5.0m) has had surgery on his ankle and is expected to miss 10 to 12 weeks.

WHY XHAKA WAS A SUB

In another setback, Xhaka was benched after only returning from injury on Saturday, when he played 75 minutes in the 1-1 draw at Bournemouth.

Le Bris explained that the quick turnaround time between matches was a key factor.

“We are following the process for Granit, three days after the last game was a little bit too short for him to start. He’ll come on the pitch later.” – Regis Le Bris on Granit Xhaka

Xhaka was brought on just before the hour mark at Elland Road, and it was no coincidence that Sunderland showed immediate improvement after his arrival.

ANOTHER SUNDERLAND CLEAN SHEET, DIARRA PEN

With Roefs out, £4.0m goalkeeper Melker Ellborg was handed his debut, having only joined the club in the January transfer window.

The 22-year-old impressed, too, racking up four saves and earning the maximum bonus.

The performances of Omar Alderete (£4.1m) and Dan Ballard (£4.6m) in front of him certainly helped, with the centre-back partnership superb throughout.

Consistently positioned to intercept everything directed at them, they both banked defensive contribution (DefCon) points, with 22 and 16 DefCons respectively.

“Omar [Alderete] and Dan [Ballard] were impressive – they are back to their best level.” – Regis Le Bris

Sunderland have now kept nine clean sheets this season, the sixth-most of any team, with this their fourth on the road.

Above: Teams sorted by clean sheets in 2025/26

Le Bris’ troops found a way to win at Elland Road, but it certainly wasn’t pretty.

Indeed, Habib Diarra’s (£5.3m) second-half penalty was Sunderland’s only shot on target.

Diarra stepped up to score the spot-kick with Enzo Le Fee (£5.0m) on the pitch, although it was a really poor penalty.

Le Fee did at least deliver DefCon points, with some really impressive off-the-ball work.

CALVERT-LEWIN BLANK

As for Leeds, they dominated the ball (70% possession) but lacked quality in the final-third, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.7m) consequently blanking for the sixth time in seven matches.

In that period, he’s netted just one goal from 14 shots, a conversion rate of only 7.1%.

He’s also missed six of his seven big chances.

“Clarity in the final third. This is what we have to add. Performance-wise, what we have invested, we can’t complain. We are always self-critical. You need to get the ball into the net. This is what we need to improve.” – Daniel Farke

Joe Rodon (£3.9m) came the closest to finding the net on Tuesday, when his goal from an Anton Stach (£4.7m) delivery was ruled out for offside by VAR.

Stach banked DefCon and also had a free-kick saved, with three shots and two chances created in total.

Close to 100k down lost most of the 170k gain of last week. Hopefully it turns around.
Some dumb decisions too playing both Sanchez and Chalobah with Alderete and Hill second and third on the bench.
Bought Gakpo for Wirtz should have just let the bench do its job.

Was 50/50 between starting Andersen and Sensesi - started Anderson and Senesi is sitting on the bench with 11 points. Enzo first sub so unlikely to see him come in unless both Wilson and Haaland are out. Pretty standard wrong call for me. I suppose Andersen may still play but can’t see an 11 pointer..

+21K. Had 4 play for 23 points. It's a solid start but with Haaland and Wilson flagged I may well be leaning heavily on the bench with Anderson & Strand-Larson.

You just have to hang in there. I've had a run of lowish scores with a team that looks fine. I've made a couple of transfers for this week but overall alot of the guys that hauled this past 4-6 weeks are just really low owned one offs. Andre from Wolves (0.1% owned) scores his first goal of the season and a clean sheet against Liverpool. There are players like that every week, it's just a crazy season!

I think second time round might even be better because you don’t have to wait a week or a year between episodes and seasons so it flows better. GoT is really good second time round for this reason.

Looking at Gw31, if using 3-4 transfers just to field 11 in that week

    The fixtures aren't great.

Removing Arsenal & Man City defenders or midfielders ...

Do you pick Fulham or Villa defence and attack?

The other fixtures all look pretty close.

Possibly Newcastle at home to Sunderland will be v tight with few goals. Maybe Newcastle will show signs of life in the league.

    It looks a conundrum.

Possibly the transfers are worth more

With the wildcard tho most people will seek to get 11 out

I guess it's also a function of removing the top two teams in Arsenal and Man City that the remaining fixtures look close

Maybe BHA v Liverpool is okay for the home side?

Leeds v Brentford could also offer value, but they could all go either way.

It does look like another rolling week

      Until injuries and suspensions tonight

Presumably some squads will play more of the starting 11 in the FA Cup top

Especially with the league looking like a two team title race

Unless Manchester United do something remarkable in the next 6 games, which look tough on paper.

They have just got the league to concentrate on, of course!

It would punish the Salah captainers

Who enjoyed his first return in the league since November.

          Tbf

Wolves assisted him nicely, seeing as tho his team mates couldn't for 4 months of league matches.

Im one of them, went early to bed thought I did a bad move and ready to send Salah away again, walking up to 18 pts. Was hopping he could be a diff at some point, thought, its an expensive one

Just took another look at the schedule. There are just two FPL deadlines in the next 5 and half weeks, and one of those is a blank GW.

      Yeah

FA Cup takes out league games and doesn't even show the matches on anything other than a TNT subscription in the UK

      Plus another international break

Loads will switch off until Gw31 - 32

      It's pretty disjointed

The Roefs + Dub combo was swinging into synchronised home games, on each even Gw in the run in

Due to the lack of points, those with that combo may be better off priority an earlier goalkeeper transfer and just fielding 10 in Gw31.

Holding the wildcard is a bit painful.

    Gabriel - Timber - Munoz
    BrunoF - Cunha - Rice - Dango
    Haaland - Ekitike - Thiago

    Dub - Andersen - Gudmund - KDH

Thanks. Just realised that I need to ditch Munoz & Timber in 31 which means I can only get one of Tav or Wilson for 30/31. Or I could play 10 and get both. GW31 defenders appeal isn't great looking at fixtures

Marcus Tavernier is a horrific finisher of open play chances is the reason for the lack of haulage yesterday. 3 non-pen goals this season from 50 attempts (6% conversion), should have 5 according to XG but that doesnt tell the whole story because his actual goals included a direct corner with an XG of 0 and a deflected free kick. So its one actual open play goal. Last season not on pens, 3 from 57 and again should have had 5-6 goals. Really bad finisher who scored flukey goals and pens until Kluivert is fit

This is a really insightful comment. Essentially take away pens and he isn't really a great pick. But I suppose for his price it doesn't matter too much.

He's obviously drawn to the bar...

As a kid at the stadium I often thought a rasper bouncing off the bar was more exciting to watch, than a goal

The anticipation and what if factor.

Brilliant reaction save from Pickford to deny Burnley a late goal.

KDH the spark for Everton to get back to winning ways at home.

Pickford loves a last minute save
I started KDH with Tarkowski first on my bench
But I've got the big 4 currently flagged as injured in my starting 11
      Haaland , O'Reilly ,Wilson & Rice

    Early thoughts on GW30 Captain?

With Haaland West Ham game sandwiched between 2 Champions League games. Is it safety of BrunoF or perhaps risk Gabriel again (vs Everton) after the DGW TC Fail that many of us had?

    Ekitike too hit and miss
    Thiago vs Bou

Or stick it on Haaland at West Ham, seems the likely play by most.

How did Tavernier end up with just 2 points is beyond me. Could have easily been a hat trick on another day.
