Tom Hadley – a one-time world number one in FPL – joined our ever-growing team of contributors this season.

He usually provides data-driven articles, chiefly around defensive contribution points (DefCon).

But in this piece, he discusses his finalised chip strategy, and what his Gameweek 32 Wildcard looks like.

reliable defenders Tom Hadley

It’s been the topic of debate for about three weeks, and I’ve finally settled on my chip strategy:

  • Gameweek 32: Wildcard
  • Gameweek 33: Bench Boost
  • Gameweek 34: Free Hit

Firstly, I’m not going to say that this chip strategy is strictly better than any other. The best part about the cup results last weekend is that no path is an obvious one. More than ever, the chip strategy decisions are totally team- and situation-dependent.

I have four free transfers and a team that would have been perfectly fine for Gameweek 32. But the double in Gameweek 33 just feels like the perfect opportunity to target the Bench Boost, even more so now that it’s not as ‘template’ as it would have been if Arsenal beat Southampton. I also think that the Gameweek 32 team on the Wildcard isn’t as bad as people make out.

GAMEWEEK 32 WILDCARD TEAM

So, here’s my current Wildcard team, with £2.0m in the bank, and the likely direction I’ll take with transfers:

FPL pre-season: Malen + Watkins again, Xhaka debut, secretive Man City 2

My 15 doublers for BB33. Anyone you would swap here?

*Bruno (c) in GW32 then selling for a doubler.

    VERBRUGGEN DARLOW

VAN HECKE SENESI HILL O’REILLY STRUIJK

    SEMENYO TAVERNIER PALMER NETO GROẞ

    PEDRO HAALAND DCL

Front line is JPedro, Ekitike, Thiago. Set on FH33. Would you:

    A. Save FT and play that front line
    B. JPedro > Bowen (covers GW34 too)
    C. Ekitike > Haaland (use a FT in 34 to play 11)

I am in almost similar situation. I could field 11 for 34, but no bench if I sell Ekitike. On the other hand I have benching headache with Dango, Rogers and Romero. C is the tempting one, but one injury and you need one extra transfer. J P may easily outscore Bowen. This is in coin toss category, but perhaps A. However, Haaland away hattie is scary possibility.

Guardiola wrote the possession blueprint that all these managers copied and adapted.

His tactical influence on the modern game will not be repeated.

Spain had massive success playing the Pep midfield.

Germany had international honours playing with mostly Pep coached players at Bayern.

Southgate is the only international coach to fumble.

Or he just tweaked cruyft's system whilst benefiting from having the best player ever come through during a golden generation of domestic players. Then couldn't win the CL / did nothing special with bayern despite buying a new team. Then worked with an unlimited budget at city whilst having 115 charges to their name for dodgy accounting.
Also made football boring with taky tiky bs.

A save transfer and play Wilson and Rogers
B mane to Bowen , play Bowen and Rogers and bench Wilson
C mane to Bowen, play Wilson and bowen and bench Rogers

    I have 3 FTS and FH gw33
    Planning no chip for 34.

    Cheers and gl 🙂

I always planed to FH 33, my team feels kind of set up for 32 and 34, with a wildcard set for the last 4 games from 35. BB 36? But I'm having second thoughts... what's the best strategy here?

I have 3 choices, (2ft) and still totally undecided:
      A) Ekitike to Haaland (no bench on 34)
      B) Bench him with Everton in mind
      and start Dango/Romero instead
      C) Ekitike to Bowen

    I think this is my WC32, BB33, FH34 lot:

    Raya
    Gab, JPvH, O'Reilly
    Semenyo, Bruno, Palmer, Gordon
    Pedro, Haaland, DCL
    (Verb, Tavernier, Senesi, Rodon) £0.1m

    Questions:
    1) Nailed Leeds def ≤£4.0m
    2) Better option than Tavernier (Stach fit?)
    3) Talk me out of non-doublers - they just seem better long term players

    1. The Mandalorian

      Palmer looks terrible under Rosenior.

Big results against poor teams inflated his data.

I think I'll do that. This season's felt like a chore. I'm at 96k. Which is pretty good, considering what a slog it's been.

Just want the season done, at this point. LFC, Slot, FPL. Then England, to be.... England in the summer. Football isn't enjoyable this season.

        Whinge over 🙂

      1) Rodon depending on injury update
      2) If Stach isn't injured then he might be better and spend .6 elsewhere
      3) I can't talk you out of it! I'll definitely have Gabriel and Bruno. Probably Gordon too. Double arsenal defence against city on bb33 doesnt seem great but I suspect from gw35 you'll be pleased you have raya and not a cheap keeper.

      Two comments:
      - I like the non-doublers. With only one move, you have to set and forget a number of spots in your lineup. Gab and Bruno seem like no-brainers. So that just leaves Gordon and Raya. Both good starts -- Gordon has been on a tear, and seems to be a bit of a differential. Raya is pricey, but with Timber a question mark, probably the best second defender for Arsenal right now. If I knew that Timber was playing, though, I might go with him. . .
      - Man, your budget is huge. I thought I managed mine well, and I'm well short of that lineup. Well done.

That's hardly the only reason. There are naturally more transfers daily when there is less time between game weeks. This situation is the opposite of festive period. Casuals also activate their WC when they play it, so that is a factor too.
