Who is the best captain for FPL Gameweek 35?

Bruno Fernandes (£10.4m) returned his 20th Fantasy assist of the season for the millions of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who backed him with the armband in Blank Gameweek 34.

Fernandes is now just eight points behind Erling Haaland (£14.6m), who returns to our thinking after FA Cup action last weekend.

While the aforementioned pair will dominate the conversation, is there a case to look elsewhere? Players from the likes of Aston Villa, Brentford, Leeds United and Chelsea could provide differential alternatives in a wide-open week.

In ‘Captain Sensible’, we will assess the on-site captaincy poll, analyse myriad player and team statistics, consult the Rate My Team (RMT) points projections, and settle on a top three for the armband, ahead of Friday’s 6.30pm BST deadline.

Unsurprisingly, Haaland enjoys a significant lead in the Fantasy Football Scout captaincy poll, although he doesn’t enjoy majority support. The Premier League’s top scorer has picked up around 35% of votes cast by site users ahead of Monday night’s trip to Everton.

In-form Red Devil, Fernandes, sits second and currently boasts just under 14% of the vote. No player has scored more points since Michael Carrick took charge. The Portugal international hasn’t blanked since Gameweek 27, although he has failed to return more than six points in each of his last three matches.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.7m) isn’t far behind Fernandes. As it stands, around 13% of respondents are backing the Englishman for Leeds’ home fixture against relegated-Burnley. Elsewhere, Igor Thiago (£7.4m) and the flagged Noah Okafor (£5.6m) are the only other players to garner more than 5% backing in the poll.

          If you’ve lost ground it might be harder to catch-up, let alone overtake, your enemies by selecting all the template picks. I WC’d in GW32 and own 9 of the players above, I suspect many will be the same as me. I’ll have 3 free trades by GW36 to look at some Palace options, so I may have up to 12 players in common with you. May be worth looking at some low percentage owned players that are firing.

    This is my worst ever season of FPL and I am well over 1m for my OR. I think this is because of two reasons.

    One - I have not had much time to watch matches and do research on players this year. Normally I would plan transfers but this year I have been making last minute gut decisions, having not watched the matches. I think the amount of influencers and information out there has compounded the problem, as I have found it very hard to make any gains in OR even in weeks when I have done well.

    Two - It has been a weird season in terms of results, with players you would not expect scoring well and ones who we could traditionally rely on or who are the better players in the team IRL not delivering in an FPL sense.

    I am debating just not playing next year as I think the trend now is clear and that unless you are able to invest a lot of time into the game and research, it is very hard to make gains. On the other hand, next season may be less random in terms of who scores what. Anybody else thinking the same or have a different perspective?

      I think you're just trying to rationalise disappointment which is what I'm normally doing this time of the season.

      I'm on the other end and having my best season ever and thinking "What have I done different? How can I repeat this next year?" - Truth is I don't know, I stuck with a triple ARS defence during their fest of clean sheets and didn't feel like I was "chasing" which meant sticking with the team I had, not chasing endless silver bullet transfers but not much else.

      Ever year the mantra is "pick Good Players from Good Teams with Good fixtures" and it rings louder this year but am I just imagining that, I don't know???

      I'm definitely more obsessed with winning my main mini-league this year and I genuinely don't care about overall rank so long as I'm #1 in the mini-league - Maybe that's been a factor?

      I'd stick with it if I were you, the game will be less without you - Keep the faith Big Fella!
