Ipswich Town have completed the signing of Brazilian striker Emersonn (£5.5m) from Toulouse, with the 21-year-old signing a five-year contract that runs until the summer of 2031.

The Tractor Boys have reportedly paid a club-record fee of £24m plus add-ons for their new forward, who also becomes the first Brazilian player in Ipswich’s history.

But what could his arrival mean for FPL managers? In this Scout Report, we assess Emersonn’s goal threat, underlying numbers and potential role at Portman Road to determine whether he could emerge as a viable Fantasy option.

MANAGER CHANGE

Before assessing what Emersonn could offer FPL managers, we first need to consider the major change in the Ipswich dugout.

O’Neil’s most recent spell in France was an impressive one. He guided Strasbourg to an eighth-place finish in Ligue 1 and took them to the Europa Conference League semi-finals, marking the first time the club had ever reached the last four of a European competition.

Before moving abroad, O’Neil had already gained significant Premier League experience. He kept Bournemouth in the top flight with a 15th-place finish before later leading Wolverhampton Wanderers to 14th and the FA Cup quarter-finals.

For FPL managers, the managerial change is significant. O’Neil’s preferred system, tactical approach and attacking set-up could have a major influence on Emersonn’s prospects, so examining how his previous sides operated should give us a better indication of what to expect from Ipswich’s new striker.

STYLE OF PLAY

During his time at Wolves, O’Neil showed plenty of tactical flexibility. He switched between a back three and a back four depending on the opposition and the players available.

Regardless of the formation, Wolves generally played with a direct attacking style. They looked to move the ball forward quickly rather than keep possession for the sake of it. The pace and ball-carrying ability of players such as Matheus Cunha and Pedro Neto made them particularly dangerous in transition.

O’Neil wanted his side to play with greater intensity and bravery while taking the game to their opponents. Physicality also appeared important when selecting his attacking players. This could suit Emersonn if he can provide the strength, movement and work rate required to lead the line.

So, who is Emersonn?

EMERSONN’S CAREER SO FAR

Full name Emersonn Correia da Silva, Ipswich’s new striker arrives at Portman Road following a rapid rise across three different leagues.

The 21-year-old began his professional career with Athletico Paranaense in Brazil. He has also represented his country at youth level. Emersonn moved to Europe in January 2025, joining Turkish top-flight side Göztepe, before Toulouse brought him to Ligue 1 later that year.

Emersonn scored six goals in all competitions during his only season in France, including three in 18 league appearances. Several of those strikes came at important moments. His performances also reportedly attracted interest from several clubs.

One of his goals came against Gary O’Neil’s Strasbourg side. Therefore, the new Ipswich boss has already witnessed his ability first-hand.

Ipswich have made a significant investment in the Brazilian. Their reported £24m fee, which could increase through add-ons, makes him the club’s record signing. He also becomes the first Brazilian player to represent the Tractor Boys.

However, Ipswich’s reported club-record investment suggests Emersonn has not arrived merely to provide squad depth. His age may mean O’Neil manages his introduction carefully, but the Brazilian should have a genuine opportunity to establish himself as the first-choice striker.

For FPL managers, pre-season minutes and line-ups could be crucial. Until the pecking order becomes clearer, competition from several established forwards creates some uncertainty around Emersonn’s expected game-time.

IPSWICH ATTACK

Although Ipswich secured promotion, their campaign was far from convincing. They failed to win any of their opening four league matches and also managed just one victory from their final four fixtures as the promotion race reached its decisive stage.

While securing automatic promotion was a major achievement, the narrow margin highlights how close they came to missing out. Ipswich’s attack wasn’t entirely convincing either. They ranked among the Championship’s top three sides for goals scored, which is encouraging. However, they still netted 17 fewer goals than champions Coventry City, highlighting the sizeable gap between the division’s most effective attack and their own.

That could make Emersonn’s arrival particularly significant. Ipswich have clearly identified the frontline as an area requiring improvement, but their existing attacking numbers may also limit the Brazilian’s early FPL appeal. Even if he secures a regular starting role, he will need consistent service and opportunities to become a reliable option.

STARTING FIXTURES

The schedule doesn’t become any easier from there. Manchester United and Liverpool both secured Champions League places last season, making them difficult opponents for a newly promoted side.

Conference League winners Crystal Palace are unlikely to be pushovers either, while Everton finished ninth after an impressive campaign of their own.

With several difficult fixtures early on, Emersonn may need time to settle before entering the FPL conversation. Ipswich’s schedule could limit both his attacking potential and the wider appeal of their assets during the opening Gameweeks.
