The pre-season friendlies continued on Friday with both Bournemouth and Manchester United in action.

We’ll take a look at the key talking points from both matches, including team selection, minutes, injuries, tactical changes and the players who boosted or dented their FPL appeal before the season gets underway.

MANCHESTER UNITED 5-0 ROSENBORG

Manchester United clean sheet

  • Goals: Lacey, Zirkzee, Devaney, Amass, Williams
  • Assists: Zirkzee, Amass, Kamason x2

Manchester United XI: Vitek (Mee 72); Yoro (Armer 61), Maguire (Kamason 46), Heaven (Devaney 61), Shaw (Amass 46); Santos (T.Fletcher 61), Mount (Gore 61), Lacey (Collyer 61), Zirkzee (Obi 61), Dorgu (Williams 61); Mbeumo (J.Fletcher 61).

SCOUT NOTES

  • Several players remained out after featuring at the World Cup, including Noussair Mazraoui (£4.5m), Lisandro Martínez (£5.0m), Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m), Amad Diallo (£6.0m), Matheus Cunha (£8.0m), Marcus Rashford (£7.0m), Diogo Dalot (£5.0m) and Senne Lammens (£5.0m).
  • Manchester United also remained without several players through injury or a lack of match fitness. Benjamin Šeško (£7.0m) continues to build his fitness, while Kobbie Mainoo (£5.5m) is recovering from the back problem that forced him to miss England’s third-place victory over France at the World Cup. Manuel Ugarte (£5.0m) also remains sidelined as he recovers from a knee ligament injury.
  • Manchester United controlled the game from start to finish. They faced a few moments of pressure but still recorded another clean sheet. Luke Shaw (£4.5m) started at left-back and regularly pushed into advanced attacking areas, while Harry Maguire (£5.0m) marshalled the defence alongside him. Both experienced defenders came off at half-time as Michael Carrick managed their minutes.

“I thought we defended pretty well as a team for the most part. A couple of little bits earlier on that we had to work out, but I thought we defended well as a team and protected the goalkeepers largely… clean sheets are a beautiful thing.” – Michael Carrick

  • In midfield, Mason Mount (£5.5m) and new signing Andrey Santos (£5.0m) started together once again and continued to build an encouraging partnership. Santos almost registered an assist after sliding Patrick Dorgu (£6.0m) through on goal. The newly reclassified midfielder couldn’t find the finish, though, as his close-range effort drifted just wide of the post.

“He’s really good defensively, reads the game, can pick up good positions, wants the ball all the time, looks to play forward.” – Mason Mount on Andrey Santos

  • Manchester United looked sharp in attack throughout. Joshua Zirkzee (£5.5m) – yes, really! – was one of the standout performers. He created the first big chance of the game by slipping Bryan Mbeumo (£8.0m) through on goal. The forward couldn’t convert, dragging his weaker right-footed effort wide. Zirkzee soon got the assist his performance deserved. His superb pass from inside his own half released Shea Lacey (£5.0m), who finished calmly. The Dutchman then got on the scoresheet himself. Harry Amass (£4.0m) picked him out from the left. Zirkzee skipped past the defender and goalkeeper before tapping into an empty net to make it 2-0.
  • While Mbeumo had a quieter afternoon, Santos, Mount and Dorgu all impressed.
  • United’s youngsters added gloss to the scoreline. Jacob Devaney (£4.0m) scored the third from a corner. Amass then capped an excellent display with a goal of his own, arriving at the back post to finish a superb cross from Jaydan Kamason (£4.0m). Kamason wasn’t finished there, as his second dangerous delivery found Ethan Williams (£4.5m), who converted from close range to complete the scoring.
  • It was another encouraging attacking display from Manchester United.

“Some of the goals were fantastic goals and just as pleasing to keep a clean sheet.” – Michael Carrick

BOURNEMOUTH 4-1 ST. PAULI

Manchester United clean sheet

  • Goals: Doak, William, Jebbison, Diakite
  • Assists: Tavernier, Christie, Toth, Adli

AFC Bournemouth first half XI: Petrovic, Truffert, William, Hill, Smith, R Christie, Scott, Tavernier, Rees-Dottin (Gannon-Doak, 20), Unal (Jebbison, 34), Evanilson.

AFC Bournemouth second half XI: Dennis, Soler, Diakite, Cook, Araujo (Aarons, 65), Toth, Stevens (Z Christie, 85) Adli, Gannon-Doak, Jebbison (Rodriguez, 64), Kluivert (Dacosta Gonzalez 70).

SCOUT NOTES

  • Two notable players missed out. Eli Junior Kroupi (£7.5m) and David Brooks (£5.0m) both sat out after reportedly suffering from fatigue, according to @AlexSmithEcho. Reports also continue to link Kroupi with a move away from Bournemouth, with several clubs interested.
  • New head coach Marco Rose started with a 4-2-3-1 formation. However, the German has regularly switched between different systems throughout his career, so don’t expect that shape to become fixed just yet.
  • Bournemouth named plenty of first-team players from the start. Đorđe Petrović (£4.5m) started in goal, while Adrien Truffert (£5.5m) lined up at left-back and James Hill (£5.5m) was in central defence.
  • The Cherries couldn’t keep a clean sheet. St. Pauli created a clear headed chance inside the opening minute before forcing several saves from Petrović. The pressure finally paid off with the opening goal after 22 minutes.
  • Bournemouth looked much stronger after that and didn’t concede again. Truffert almost equalised after Ryan Christie (£5.5m) picked him out inside the box, but the left-back couldn’t finish. Christie did register a Fantasy assist moments later. His saved effort fell kindly for Harold Williams (£4.5m), who converted Bournemouth’s second goal.
  • The equaliser came from Ben Doak (£5.0m). The Scotland international, who featured at the World Cup, finished low across the goalkeeper after Marcus Tavernier (£6.0m) won possession and launched a quick counter-attack. Doak looked lively throughout his 20-minute cameo as Bournemouth continued to manage his minutes following last season’s injury.
  • Tavernier also supplied the assist for the opener and later came close with a direct free-kick after Evanilson (£6.0m) won the foul. Outside of those moments, neither player saw much of the ball.
  • Alex Scott (£6.0m) also caught the eye. Reports suggest he recently rejected a new Bournemouth contract amid interest from several clubs, including Chelsea. Scott saw one effort blocked inside the box and took several indirect free-kicks from wide areas.
  • The second half also brought more familiar faces. Daniel Jebbison made an instant impact, firing home from the left side of the box to make it 3-1. He also won a free-kick on the edge of the area, although Justin Kluivert (£6.0m) curled the resulting effort over the crossbar.
  • Alex Tóth (£5.0m) and Amine Adli (£5.0m) both registered assists. Adli’s corner created Bournemouth’s fourth goal, while both players strengthened their case for more minutes with Europa League football to come.
  • Overall, it was a encouraging performance under Rose. Bournemouth looked vulnerable at times without the ball, but they carried plenty of attacking threat. It should be said, of course, that this was all against a side relegated from the Bundesliga last season.

I want to BB gw1, but I’m being put off by the fact it means committing to a very early WC - maybe even gw2. I have to get two keepers when I only want one, and I can’t help picking with a bias towards those with a good gw1 fixture, when several players I want longer term, don’t have the best gw1 fixtures. Either way, I’m going with 15 starters, so I might just save it until I have a big bench headache.

So many teams have so many players available for rotation these days, almost worth just starting with a team of nailed on players, without trying to second guess in first few GWs…

It’s not easy picking 15 nailed players who have good score potential. I think the best we can do, is avoid picking player that we expect to be just fodder.

The no-premium strategy took a lot of flack for how Haaland did last season, but it was mainly just the first half of season. Salah obviously wasn’t an option.

Every season is different. A no-Haaland team isn’t a crazy decision. Possibly not even Bruno is worth the price tag. But nobody will know until it’s potentially too late. Poised to take the risk myself

You have to choose one for captaincy purposes and at that point Haaland becomes essential in my view. But both of them aren’t standalone values without captaincy. I’m picking Bruno and Haaland out of fear of Bruno’s early fixtures but I don’t think he’s a good spend

For the entire second half of the season, Haaland wasnt worth it. Hard to bet against his start of season form though. that said, hes never had a summer tournament before and did look very tired in Norways 3 last matches (despite scoring 3 goals)

I agree. Bruno & Haaland only become good value when they are captain. But you can’t give the armband to both of them.

There was one occasion last season when I owned Haaland but did not captain him. He scored a goal which actually damaged my rank because of the millions who had given him the armband.

        That’s taught me a lesson.

Settling on this. Happy that it covers all the bases I’d be looking for:

    Kinsky (Dovin)
    Gvardiol Mosquera Shaw (Thomas,Van Ewijk)
    Bruno Cunha Cherki Szoboszlai (Crooks)
    Haaland Pedro DCL

Only changes I would consider are between Mosquera-Calafiori-Hincapie or potentially Brobbey/Osula over DCL. Pretty happy with the rest as I’ve got coverage on all the top five teams, potential BB viability in GW2 if Dovin is the starter, and a few punts like Cunha and Cherki and Gvardiol

The biggest question this season is Bruno or Haaland. Cramming both into your team seems insane. Are you really going to have a 15.5m player in your team without capping him? Surely you are capping Bruno against Hull and Ipswich and if thats the case Haaland is just kinda dragging your entire squad down. You can make a squad with them both, sure, but all the value is in defense after DC was added (even with increased prices of DC merchants) and if you have Haaland + Bruno youre gonna be sitting there with the likes of Thomas and 4.5 dross hoping you get 3 points at most instead of a full value backline of O'Reilly/Gvardiol/Guehi, Virgil, Senesi, Gabriel/Timber, Tarkowski, Truffert etc

    Premium-free draft:

    Verbruggen - Petrovic
    Porro - Munoz - Kerkez - Hall - (4.0)
    MGW - Cunha - Mbuemo - Palmer - Rogers
    Pedro - Isak - Thiago

I feel like this is pretty strong, but on the other hand I have tried to go premium-free before and it has never worked!

Have you looked into the rotations for those attackers and seen that at least one has a bad fixture each week? If not, then your going to have a good, 7.5+ player, with a good fixture, olon the bench many weeks. I'd downgrade one of the mid/forwards to a 5.5/6 to be first bench option, (but still decent) and bulk up the defence or a GK even more.

I'd also hold on to the WC in case you do need to convert back to getting a premium in.

Otherwise, I quite like it. I'm currently sitting on Bruno but not Gab or Haaland, and like what I can do with the squad.

First try at a little bit different BBGW1 draft:

    Raya - Pickford
    Gab - Guehi - Nunes - Shaw - Senesi
    Gross - Bruno (C) - MGW - KDH - Szobo
    Gyok - Beto - Igor J

Defense is where it seems most likely to be changes before the game starts. Probably a lot of optimization to be made there based on how Maresca wants his backline to look like but the core of having a really strong back 5 will remain.

    Kinksy, Leno?
Palaestra, Cunha, plus Rotate Shaw, Mitchell, Cash
Bruno F, Saka, Palmer, Foden, Kroupi
    Pedro plus Rotate Sesko, Mateta

Differential right. No Halland, bunch of 4.5 backs, Sesko and Mateta as 2nd stirker
Hmm, I can see the comments coming

    Consider this
    3-5-2 formation
Backs, 2 set and forget and the other 3 rotate for the 3rd spot

    Set and forget
Chelsea fixture run to GW13 is off the charts so Palaestra or Lacroix or James
Senesi original choice but over the first 6 games I think Cunha has more points potential and then switch to Senesi set and forget

    Rotate 3rd spot
    Starting with Cash, Shaw, Mitchell
Use 5 transfers to cycle through 4.5 defenders from Everton, Bournemouth, Spurs, Fulham and Brentford
I get a 4.5 defender playing 18 times against one of the promoted teams in 18 games, not to mention one of them is probably on penalties

Gabriel gets clean sheet 1 in 2 games. I'd back my 4.5's to better than that playing 16 out of 18 against Hull, Ipswich and Coventry

I then applied similar logic to the strikers
Pedro set and forget for 13 games

Sesko rotated through Osula, Muniz, Evanilson
    Mateta
and you get 12 out 16 games where the stiker is playing one of Hull, Coventry Ipswich at a cost of just 3 transfers

Got an extra mill to spare start with Watkins instead of Mateta, same 12 from 16

    Anti Haaland

    Haaland scored 27, 22 and 27 last 3 seasons.

Outside of his blistering start he had

gameweek 12-32 three goals last season
gameweek 6-18 three goals the previous season
11 games with 4 goals the season before

I am backing my rotating strikers playing against 3 promoted teams being able to natch him at a cost 7m or 6m per striker

And loading the midfield with proven 200 point players

Yes. Glasner likes a back 3, and in both preseason games Glasner has done the first half with a strong team with Jair starting all 3.

The thoight process makes sense but Planning for that amount of transfers never works out in my experience..

You are almost guaranteed to no longer look ahead to gw5, let alone gw 16... when some random player is oop, hauls and suddenly looks essential in gw2

Wood's probably not going to start games and Nketiah definitely isn't going to. Not keen on the double City and Liverpool defence either

I was wondering about Wood as nobodies mentioned him

Virgil always delivers and Alisson has a really good points history, was top keeper for a few seasons.

Not loving the city defence but not seeing better alternative currently.. Maybe califiori?

Yeah Calafiori or Mosquera. I like Virgil as well, he's in my team but not sure I'd have Alisson too

Konsa doesn't really do Defcons so I'd get Cash instead. The rest is great

Yeah, could be any 4.5 really, doesn’t have to be Villa either. Aina is a possibility also, as is Kayode, etc.

Thank you for keeping the manual one free, btw.

I went Robotless on GW1 last season and he braced.

Never again. (when he is fit)

The better players you have because of not having Haaland can easily cover a brace, the problem is Captain.
