As we count down to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 1 deadline, we’re welcoming back our team of guest contributors.

This time, we hear from FPL Meerkat, who talks us through five low-owned players have caught his eye in pre-season.

Pre-season has now finished, with each Premier League team giving us a good number of games to assess them.

Here are five players at below 5% ownership who caught my eye over the summer.

1. Martin Odegaard (Arsenal) – £6.5m midfielder – 4.3% owned

owned low

Arsenal completely coasted past Manchester City in their 3-0 triumph in the Community Shield.

At the heart of their impressive display was captain Martin Ødegaard (£6.5m). He was at the centre of everything Arsenal did, grabbing himself a goal. He also provided the ‘pre-assist’ for the Gunners’ opener, supplying a delightful cross to Christos Tzolis (£6.5m), who headed it back for Kai Havertz’s (£7.5m) close-range finish.

The Norwegian was even close to bagging defensive contribution points (DefCon), racking up 11 in 84 minutes:

8 FPL things we learned from the Community Shield

This followed a World Cup in which he turned in some impressive displays for Norway, at odds with the sub-par showings we got from him in 2025/26.

Arsenal have a favourable fixture against Coventry City in Gameweek 1, and many teams are struggling to fit in a Gunners attacker. While the Tzolis bandwagon is picking up some serious momentum, could Odegaard be the one?

His place in the team looks secure right now (which we may not be able to say about Tzolis in the medium term) and, unlike the England and Spain contingent, he was eliminated early enough in the World Cup to get more than 1/2 pre-season matches under his belt.

2. Ferdi Kadioglu (Brighton) – £4.5m defender – 3.1% owned

owned low

The technically gifted full-back has had a promising pre-season for Brighton.

We saw different facets of his game in the two recent kickabouts.

Against Roma, he recorded seven defensive contributions in just 60 minutes. We didn’t see much of those in 2025/26, of course, and he’s more known for getting forward. That’s something we witnessed much more of on Saturday against Bologna.

With Albion short of fit wingers, fellow full-back Maxim De Cuyper (£4.5m) was the one entrusted with the ‘out of position’ (OOP) tag on the left flank. However, as noted in the Scout Notes, Kadioglu got forward as much as De Cuyper, providing ‘underlaps’ and bombing on past his fellow defender. The Turkish international registered just as many penalty area touches (three), and twice went close to scoring, hitting the woodwork with a sitter and nearly squeezing in a cross-shot.

Above: Ferdi Kadioglu’s heatmap on Saturday, via Sofascore

Brighton were one of the strongest defences last season, data-wise, and Kadioglu is on an unbroken run of 34 starts in the Premier League, too!

3. Kevin Schade (Brentford) – £6.0m midfielder – 2.8% owned

owned low

Saturday’s football saw one fixture in particular raise some eyebrows as Brentford demolished Frankfurt 7-0. The biggest contributor to that was Kevin Schade (£6.0m).

He registered two goals and two assists in the game, having nine touches in the opposition box and creating the most chances (three).

Schade, surprisingly, has been priced £0.5m cheaper than his counterpart Dango Ouattara (£6.5m), but from watching their pre-season games, Schade looks to be the more goal-hungry, inverting into the centre time and time again.

It’s worth noting that no FPL midfielder had more big chances than the German last season (eight):

There is the lingering threat of Brentford’s new signing Jaidon Anthony (£6.0m), but Anthony is also capable of playing on the right and on paper, he’s likely a backup option for both wingers. Think Reiss Nelson (£5.5m) from last season. Perhaps Anthony’s arrival is the kick up the backside Schade needs, after a sub-par 2025/26.

Schade is capable of massive points potential. Managers may recall his hat-trick against Bournemouth in Gameweek 18 last season, while he delivered 15 attacking returns in 2024/25 despite making just 26 starts.

At a competitive price point, he may be that extra midfielder you’re looking for.

4. Sindre Walle Egeli (Ipswich) – £4.5m forward – 2.0% owned

owned low

Speaking of cheap enablers, Sindre Walle Egeli (£4.5m) has really caught my eye in pre-season. He has started the last two friendlies for Ipswich and in those run-outs, registered three assists!

This season we are very limited when it comes to the cheap striker bracket, with no guaranteed £5.0m starters and only a couple at £5.5m. So, a genuine option at £4.5m feels too good to be true.

And in the medium term, it might be. Abdul Fatawu (£5.5m) only missed out at the weekend with a knock, while Julio Enciso has now signed. Those two occupy the positions that Egeli has played in pre-season.

He should still get minutes, however, and there’s still a good chance of a Gameweek 1 start if Enciso/Fatawu aren’t ready for anything other than cameos. All eyes and ears on Gary O’Neil’s presser.

If he does look like starting, he could be a nice option for players Bench Boosting on the opening weekend – the Tractor Boys have a decent fixture against Sunderland at home – and then he doesn’t waste any budget as bench fodder thereafter.

Promoted teams tend to fare pretty well in their first home game back in the Premier League, and as we saw last season, forwards haven’t offered the same kind of points potential that midfielders and defenders have since the addition of defensive contributions.

So a “cheap as possible” third forward is one possible way to go.

5. Jeremy Jacquet (Liverpool) – £5.0m defender – 1.6%

Liverpool’s new centre-back made his first appearance for the club against Como on Sunday and looked like he’d been there for years.

Not only did he put in a Man of the Match-worthy performance in the 45 minutes he played, but he also scored a debut goal. Joe Gomez (£5.0m) can’t be too happy about that, nearly 300 games into a goalless career…

More impressively, he also managed to record six defensive contributions in just one half. Extrapolate that over 90 minutes and he’s well past the threshold:

Above image from Sofascore

Now the sample is obviously small, but a performance like that on your debut certainly leaves an impression.

At a low price of £5.0m, a defender from one of the top backlines in the league that has defensive contribution and goal potential sounds exciting!

Spent my entire day off on FPL. Finally settled on this plan after doing deep dives into fixture runs all the way till GW 19.

    Kinsky
    Calafiori - Shaw - Hume
    Bruno - Mbeumo - Tzolis - Gross
    Haaland - Isak - Pedro

    Dubravka - Rodon - Slater - Thomas

    BB 16 WC 17
    FH 8/10/15

Hope I can pull off this long patient game. BB 16 WC17 and FH in any of those weeks just looks so beautiful.

The fickleness of FPL managers. If you are swayed to remove Haaland because he didn't score in a friendly against the best team in England you have no chance doing well over the course of a season.

      I’ll bite.

A lot of people have been twitchy about Haaland for a while - check comments over the past couple of weeks. Reason being he’s (obviously) VERY expensive and for that money people want a points machine that is better than any other asset in the game. He’s had no preseason, has said he’s tired, and turns out is playing in a team that is well behind in its set up for the premiership, under a new manager, and we all remember how well Pedro did under him. Now, a week ago everyone was saying arsenal were in trouble for letting in all their preseason goals, so of course this is may all change, but Pep ain’t coming back and maybe the new team will take time to gel. Or maybe not. But for Haaland money, you don’t pay for maybes.

      1. Brosstan
        • 12 Years

I never had Haaland, check my post history.. But people have been calling him essential for weeks then one game and they change their tune. Anyone who plays the game like that is just a flip flopper who wont do well unless their knee jerk decisions happen to come off which is all luck.

BB#1 Draft, Likely FH3 , i like it and gives nice options way beyond week 5/6 , could avoid WC for a longtime. Seems over budget on paper.

    Lammens, Verb
White Calafiori Mosquera O Reilly Davis
    Bruno mBuemo Wirtz N'Diaye Rogers
    Isak Pedro DCL

Anyone else tempted by this agressive like play -- feeds into a nice FH3 also to avoid 9 players playing against each other.

Pretty good, although stating the obvious that three arsenal defenders is quite risky (especially when the best defender isn’t one of them)

May struggle with your bench on non-BB gameweeks (maybe downgrade Rogers to get Gabriel)?

Cheers, So far I havent looked beyond week 3 FH and week 4 team

Actually could do a nice longterm saving transfers regig and get Tarkowski and Szob for Mosquera and Wirtz, and easily bench Davis and Everton players 2 and 4. Then from 5 onwards Everton have nice fixtures without needing any transfers to get them.

Both good options. Tarkowski you know what you get, O'Reilly is very unknown. He did play a bit forward in the CS but he also was poor defensively when used that way. It was a very Pep typical tactical choice that had him playing as forward as he did at the end of last season, so who knows if Maresca wants the same.

Tark safer, O'Reilly higher upside but could also become a waste of 6.5m if he isnt utilized like last seasoen

Jacquet was transferred from Rennes for 70M€... Araujo had temporarily stopped football for mental issues (and was very far from his level since come-back) I think he's only a backup solution

9, think I might want a playing goalkeeper for kinsky’s trickier fixture but apart from Kadioglu can’t see how (I also think the best 4.5 defender is Ajer, which might be important if Hume gets dropped)

Spurs will be better but Kinsky and Van Hecke? I had both but VH is £5m and Brentford away can be tricky especially if VDV isn't playing. Newcastle at home is GW2...not sure what Newcastle you will get.
I guess I'd be wary of doubling up at this stage although both players will appear in my team at some stage.
With Spence gone, Udogie injured and VDV not fully fit Robertson might be a punt at 0.5m cheaper as he is surely nailed on left side for first few GW?

    Article has me swaying :

    A) Tzolis

or will the latter just assist Tzolis the assister ?

If you don’t need to rely on trolls/bench boost GW1 I think tzolis (might take corners)

Medium to long term ode (right to worry about pre assist)

Would you sacrifice DCL to have Tzolis in your team? Additionally it would mean my 8th offensive player would be a risky low budget striker instead of a solid low price midfielder?

The midfielder is Caicedo, likely to play him a fair bit.

Forward would be Simms or WallE I guess.

I would love Tzolis for Coventry but really only that game.

DCLs fixtures are a little ropey too, imo.

            just now

We’ll see but I think they will take time to get going. They’ve brought some good players in though, despite the inexperience. Depends on how Elanga and Wissa get going. They were pants last year but if they recindle their form from previous seasons, Newcastle could have some FF gems

I’ve not seen the player you’ve seen. He’s mostly looked off it still imo it’s enough to just own him.

De Cuyper and Robinson are transfers waiting to happen. If the injury crisis at Brighton is that bad then they will sign another offensive player

Original team before charity shield was not BB team, it’s listed below.

              Kinsky Dubravka
              Shaw Calafiori Williams Porro Roden
Semenyo Estevao Wirtz Dowman Wilson (or Tel)
              Isak Halland Pedro

              What do you think?

Dowman and Estevao can’t be picked if you’re planning to bench boost. Neither are in the first 11 for each team

The rest I like but would use the porro spot to free up some money to sort the mids out

I understand but if they buy someone tomorrow I doubt they’ll play on Saturday. De Cuyper is selected purely for BB reasons only. My rationale is that he’s playing OOP due to injuries. Both him and Robertson will be transferred out for Porro and A N Other likely GW3 after FH2. Other team was selected before Charity shield. It looks clear that Estevao won’t start, Dowman was a punt due to Saka playing for England at WC. Doesn’t look like he’ll start so I’ve juggled the team and got Gomez to accommodate.
Any alternatives you have in mind based on the reasoning?

None of the new boys are a massive uplift on what they already have. Largely immaterial on whether they get more clean sheets. Branthwaite staying fit and getting a proper RB will be much more influential
