Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is just two days away – and we’ve got a comprehensive guide to the best players for defensive contribution (DefCon) points to bring you.

It comes courtesy of Tom Hadley, a former world number one in FPL, and who will be providing data-driven articles for Fantasy Football Scout throughout 2026/27.

This article is an in-depth look into which players offer the most potential value at each price point, chiefly focusing on the players that typically excel at accumulating DefCon points.

I’ll also take a look at bonus point magnets at the bottom of this piece.

DefCon Leaders: Defenders

The most notable talking point ahead of this season is the fact that the vast majority of the best-performing DefCon assets from last season have either changed team or changed manager. This adds a degree of uncertainty to predicting the nature of this season.

Not only that, but the majority of top performers have received a price increase, too.

So, my current thinking is perhaps to instead gamble on a few new potential DefCon gems.

Immediately, the £5.0m bracket looks like the sweet spot. I think there is so much potential at that price across the board.

VUSKOVIC + MUHAREMOVIC

Best £5.0m defenders for FPL 2026/27

It is new boys Luka Vuskovic and Tarik Muharemovic (both £5.0m) who really catch my eye, both boasting extremely impressive DEFCON numbers and attacking data from their previous clubs.

I’m very keen just to go straight into the season with these two players. I think the upside is potentially huge, and they could match those star men from last season who are now in the £6.0m bracket.

Muharemovic looks to be by far the safer pick of the two. He was straight into the left side of the Leeds back three and seamlessly settled in over pre-season (not to mention his bicycle kick goal!). Leeds look even stronger defensively with the addition of James Trafford (£5.0m), and I can also see Muharemovic chipping in with some attacking returns.

Vuskovic, on the other hand, may not be a week-to-week starter at first. However, the fact that he started the last two friendlies gives me a lot more confidence in his likelihood of a start in Gameweek 1, at least.

The upside with Vuskovic looks huge. He hit DefCon in just 60 minutes in the last friendly and has already had a couple of good chances from corners in pre-season. His goal record from centre back is incredible for his age (17 goals in 91 games). I’d be shocked if we don’t see a good few big hauls from him this season! This is the main reason why I’m likely to just risk him from the off.

Of course, all of these promising numbers may not translate to FPL; I just believe it could be worth just taking the gamble for the huge potential upside. There is an early Wildcard as cover, and a lot of people will likely be using that chip in the opening six Gameweeks regardless.

Which defenders had the highest floor score last season?

This is an important consideration in DefCon.

Players may repeatedly hit the defensive contribution threshold but if they concede significantly or get booked a lot, it slowly loses its value. Look at Maxime Esteve last season: 38 DefCon points but a shortage of shut-outs meant he averaged a miserable 2.5 points per game.

4+ points is the dream target for all defenders. Either a simple clean sheet, an attacking return, or DefCon points with just one goal conceded.

Dan Ballard (£5.0m) and Jaka Bijol (£4.5m) posted quite remarkable numbers from last year, particularly in home games. They’re names to consider if you’re planning a player rotation that involves a lot of home matches.

The Bournemouth defence was ridiculously consistent across the board, but this one maybe needs a bit of time to see how the new manager gets on.

We have the perfect entry point for Bournemouth assets, too, in Gameweek 7 (or on a Wildcard just before that). Adrien Truffert (£5.5m) and James Hill (£5.5m) are very much on my watchlist until then. They could still offer tremendous value, even with price rises, should they replicate the numbers from last season.

Defenders who hit DefCon whilst keeping a clean sheet

Want Konsa from the start, but given he won't start GW1, it’s making BB1 + long term planning tough.

Maybe get White or Mosquera as a placeholder for Konsa. Will cost an extra transfer, but hopefuly you get their cs points from first couple of GW's at least

Part of me is tempted to just get Konsa and play the bench boost GW1. OK, I'll be missing a player but the rest of the squad looks good for BB.
Alternatively start with a playing 4.5 and bring Konsa in a few weeks down the line but then its one extra transfer to do and his price might rise.

21 goals scored in all comps in his first season in England, vital to us winning the Premier League. Not bad for, as you call Gyökeres, a "donkey".

4.5 def who will play gw1 and gw4.

Considering Kadioglu, Dunk or a little bit of a diff pick with Mitchell who has been attacking quite a bit in pre season

    1. TafOnTour1

Kadioglu is the best £4.5m defender for me this season, unsure on De Cuyper, but Kadioglu is a brilliant player, and £4.5m ks a steal, along with Joe Rodon, but might be rotation risk with Nico Elvedi joining the helm at Elland Road.

      1. Brosstan

Would have de cuyper or hume if just for gw1 but too much risk with their status going to gw4.

Kadioglu seems very good indeed. And two good fixtures in 1 and 4

Generally looks good. Personally not a fan of a dead striker spot when we have plenty good options for 6.0 which we can all switch from one to the next in 1 move depending on form/fixtures. Don’t like Amad either as he is a heavily rotated player with low output. I prefer Schade/Le Fee for that price. Jacquet is obviously unknown and not sure how nailed he is with Araujo at the club also but could be good value if he starts.

        I like the rest.

Oh come on man, so you're taking this as concrete evidence that he won't start? Who else is going to play on the left wing other than Dorgu?

Of course it isn't concrete evidence, but I won't risk it!

    Lammens
    Gabriel, Calafiori, Frimpong
    Bruno, Mbuemo, Tzolis, Wilson
    Isak, Thiago, Pedro

    Rushworth, Kluivert, Thomas, Van Ew

Really good BB2 team. Missing the big H, but that's what you get...

I would be scared to go without Haaland, but if I did, I wouldnt go for Gabriel. I would spread the funds even more and get players like Palmer and make a better bench boost team. Just my two cents.

Thanks. I’ve two iterations, one with Gabriel and one with Semenyo. Palmer is firmly on my watch list but would like to see him hit some form first

Not a fan of triple Coventry defence - too many eggs in one basket and all it takes is a Hull goal to bust your BB.

And it also leaves you with a weak bench going forward

The weak bench going forward is the plan. I’m using WC4

Thoughts on this team (first RMT)? No Defcon players and no Bruno. Plan is to wildcard in gw6 and bb in gw7 though I will not force it.

    Lammens
    O’Reilly Calafiori Frimpong
    Mbeumo Wirtz Foden Tzolis
    Haaland Isak Pedro

    4.0 Thomas Diop 4.5

Fulham have great fixtures in gw6-8 and there a great cheap rotation options ie. Kinsky and Ramsdale etc. I will have more knowledge about all teams, including defcon player. Fixture swing for teams like Liverpool.

Its not like I am dead set on bench boosting or wildcarding if in still happy with the team, but it is just a benchmark week Where I will feel okay about bench boosting. I dont want to BB in gw1 or gw2 as I want to save the wildcard for as Long as I Can.

Very tempted to go no Arsenal defence until Konsa is expected to start.
Saving 3.5m over Gabriel seems too good of an offer

For anyone interested, I'm a bit autistic and have done some digging into which opposition are best for hitting defcon points, sorted by overall, then defenders and midfielders specifically. My findings suggest that opposition is very relevant for defenders hitting defcon, with Liverpool (120pts) giving out defcon points more than twice as regularly as Fulham (52pts) last season.

DEFCON AGAINST PER TEAM SORTED BY POSTION
    TEAM Total Mid Def
    ARS 132 80 52
    AVL 162 94 68
    BHA 140 84 56
    BOU 134 92 42
    BRE 160 100 60
    CHE 118 64 54
    CRY 164 110 54
    EVE 174 102 72
    FUL 108 52 56
    LEE 148 98 50
    LIV 180 120 60
    MCI 138 76 62
    MUN 144 78 66
    NEW 172 98 74
    NFO 126 66 60
    SUN 122 68 54
    TOT 160 78 82

I also found that midfielders on average hit defcon points almost half as much in the opening 10 matches compared to the rest of last season, so I guess maybe don't put too much emphasis on defcon early doors

I guess that the fact of playing home or away can make it very different for a lot of teams regarding these particular figures

Great work! I would be interested in seeing total opposition DEFCONs rather than the points accumulated. Hitting point thresholds can be more due to formulated attacks or concentrated efforts sometimes.
