Kai Havertz (£7.5m), Bukayo Saka (£9.5m) and Martin Odegaard (£6.5m) all scored in the Gameweek 1 curtain-raiser on Friday, as Arsenal coasted to a comfortable 3-0 win over Coventry City.

Here are our Scout Notes from the game, with stats from our FPL Toolkit.

TZOLIS WATCH

Christos Tzolis (£6.5m) banked six points for his 25% ownership on Friday, but it could easily have been more.

In a comfortable night’s work for Arsenal, the Greek winger was directly involved in seven shots (four of his own, three created for others).

Tzolis, who was one of Arsenal’s standout players in pre-season, was full of industry and invention from the outset.

Although none of his shots found the back of the net, he did supply an assist when Saka swept home from close range after Coventry ‘keeper Carl Rushworth (£4.5m) failed to grasp his low cross.

Tzolis won’t face the Sky Blues every week. However, given the departure of Leandro Trossard and the uncertain future of Gabriel Martinelli (£6.5m), who wasn’t in the matchday squad here, his prospects look positive.

“I love that a player who has only been with us a few weeks gets this kind of energy whenever he’s on the ball, and I think he’s earned it. I think the way he has performed the last few games has been phenomenal; what he transmits as a player – so direct, constantly incisive and wants to make things happen. He has an incredible variety of actions in the last 30 metres to decide and make the right decisions – even when the spaces are really small. I’m really impressed with him.” – Mikel Arteta on Christos Tzolis

ODEGAARD HAUL, FULL-BACKS ADVANCED

As for Odegaard, he ran the show for Arsenal and looked equally sharp.

His performance in the Community Shield last week had hinted at what was ahead. But it felt like he stepped up another level here, with his right-sided partnership with Ben White (£5.5m) and Saka really catching the eye.

“That’s the goal. Last season was a big struggle for me. I had too many injuries and a lot of weird situations and bad luck. I could never find a rhythm — it’s hard when you’re going in and out [of the team], and sometimes you’re playing not 100% fit. It was hard but I feel good now. My body is good, I had a good summer, a good World Cup, a good pre-season and I’m feeling 100% which always helps. I feel great.” – Martin Odegaard

Odegaard and White, who assisted the Norwegian’s second-half strike, both earned bonus and 11 points each.

White took up some really advanced positions, just like Riccardo Calafiori (£5.5m) on the other side.

Both full-backs banked assists, with the Italians coming from a crisp pass into Havertz after some poor Coventry defending.

“It’s in relation to the opponent’s behaviour, to try to cause them problems so they’re hard for the opponents to handle, they are a big threat in the opponent’s box so we need to use them.” – Mikel Arteta on his full-backs positioning

ARTETA ON BRUNO G

Mikel Arteta made two alterations to his side from last week’s win over Manchester City: Declan Rice (£7.5m) and Saka in for Bruno Guimaraes (£7.0m) and Noni Madueke (£6.5m).

Guimaraes missed out completely after coming off at half-time in Cardiff with a groin issue.

“We expect him not to be out for weeks. Let’s see how he evolves this week – he wanted to carry on and that’s when you start to understand the character of the player, but I don’t expect that to be a big issue.” – Mikel Arteta on Bruno Guimaraes

Despite their truncated pre-seasons, Rice and Saka looked really lively and lasted 67 minutes before they were both handed partial breathers by Arteta.

Notably, they took all of Arsenal’s corners, with Tzolis not involved.

Prior to kick-off, new £55m arrival Ezri Konsa (£4.5m) was introduced on the pitch. He now looks set to be in contention for next Monday’s trip to former club Aston Villa.

“Depth and quality. Obviously, we were extremely short in the defensive line with the injuries of Wilo [Saliba] and Jurrien [Timber]. We only have four, sometimes five, players in the defensive line, so it was a huge risk to take so we were trying to recruit.” – Mikel Arteta on Ezri Konsa

COVENTRY ERRORS, AWONIYI DEBUT

In the end, it turned into a bit of a training exercise for Arsenal. However, Coventry’s poor defending certainly didn’t help the visitors.

Frank Lampard’s men started reasonably well, but Milan van Ewijk (£4.0m) and Rushworth both made costly errors in the first-half, as Arsenal raced into a 2-0 lead.

“The goals we conceded were not great for us.” – Frank Lampard

Thankfully, they won’t face Arsenal every week.

Indeed, Coventry host fellow new boys Hull City next weekend, with heightened interest in that clash for Gameweek 2 Bench Boosters.

Bobby Thomas (£4.0m) was the busiest of the Coventry defenders on Friday. He was the only player from either side to bank defensive contribution (DefCon) points:

Coventry hardly laid a glove on Arsenal, having generated only 0.2 expected goals (xG).

Jack Rudoni (£5.0m), a late substitute as he returns to full fitness, probably had the visitors’ best opportunity, but his weak header went straight at David Raya (£6.0m).

Meanwhile, Ellis Simms (£5.0m) kept his place up top. However, another substitute, Taiwo Awoniyi (£5.5m), caused more problems upon his introduction. You’d assume he’ll be a starter sooner or later.

Just need a Hull goal to burst your balloon ...

I think Coventry will do well at home TBF.

But I'd be backing their attackers and that doesn't fit into an early doors BB budget so well.

A BB is 3/4 defenders in a standard team structure. So you just pick your poison. I think Coventry at home vs HUL is as good as it gets for the budget options outside of a DGW so I'm gonna take that shot.

Just out of the likes of Hull and Coventry I'd be more inclined to have an 8th attacker than a budget defender

Hardly anyone has Roefs, just 4.4% owned, am I missing something? He was great least season, and only 5 mil.

I guess lots of people want a 4.5 keeper, but for 0.5 more, he is worth it.

Perhaps lots of people have a Sunderland defender instead?

Sunderland were excellent last season defensively but with Europa away that Thursday - Sunday thing might hit hard in the second season syndrome...

          That’s true.
But he was lucky and scored.
Going forward I’d be more confident based on his positioning, he was close to both Havertz and Saka when they scored their goals so it’s promising.

The ownership difference between Pedro and Thiago is some gulf, 64% owned v 17%.

There is a £0.5m difference so that probably plays a big part, and fixtures to keep in mind, but is club bias playing the biggest part in this?

If Thiago played for Chelsea, and Pedro played for Brentford, would those percentages basically flip?

Pedro facing some competition for his spot, and not on pens either right.

I think Pedro would still be higher owned if their prices were flipped.

Brentford are just not a 'big' team and Pedro's end of season and preseason form suggest he's gonna be really good.

Pedro is so some FPL darling for reasons unknown to me, so you are maybe right. Pedro always trolls me though, cant stand him. Since he went to Chelsea he imo is a glorified pen merchant with no pens xD

      Probably

      I have both

Do we know who's on penalties?

I thought that the manager hadn't checked last season's but had made his own mind up and is keeping it under his hat?

That said, it's incredible that a manager genuinely wouldn't know who had scored, or missed from the spot last season. It would be a pretty good indicator to check.

Yea he said something like that. I only glanced at what he said, but something on those lines, like he knows the club previously had set penalty takers, but he would decide.

He obviously know that Palmer and Enzo took the penalties last season. And I’d be more than surprised if Palmer is not on penalties still.

Just some ‘I’m the boss from now on’ talk from Alonso.

      Who’s Pedro’s competition - Delap?

Thiago’s just the newest midtable striker who manages to randomly bag a load before reverting back to the norm, e.g. Austin, Berahino, Wood…

Danny Ings scored 72 Premier League goals.

Can't really call him lucky and that's amongst 3 seasons he played only 14 games for Liverpool and an unproductive 3 seasons at West Ham.

I know it's easy to slate players on here but he clearly had goal scoring ability to reach that level.

I never doubted his ability, I’m saying it’s not uncommon for strikers in midtable teams to randomly hit 20+ goals then never replicate that again.

Ings’ highest goal tally (again not including unpredictable pens) outside of that season was 10. Wouldn’t surprise me to see Thiago do the same, especially as he’s a worse player.

Thiago played for one of the greatest national teams in history of football this summer(not that particular squad ofc, just historically). Had very good players around him (one of them being Vinicius Jr) and yet he was straight up butt cheeks.

Goldbridge has an interesting theory on Savinho and Marmoush to Spurs.

Spurs are massively overpaying for Savinho, £85m with add-ons. So, Goldbridge thinks there’s something fishy going on here and that some of that fee is actually subsidising Marmoush.

Marmoush has a sell-on clause that City would owe Eintracht Frankfurt if he goes for £60m or more. By artificially keeping Marmoush’s individual price below that threshold and loading the rest onto Savinho, City completely bypasses the sell-on fee.

Does anyone think there is any credence in this? Interesting theory, but I'm not sure - there is no way they would have this written on paper anywhere, it would be a gentleman's agreement, and I'm not sure Spurs would risk City screwing them over lol.

no one would pay 85m for Savinho without something fishy going on in the background so theres definitely something amiss.

If Man City have saved on the 15% cash back on profits here, future transfer clauses will stipulate no double transfer dealings.

More money to the lawyers and accountants etc., which is part of the Man City model and a problem with the money men ruining the game.

conspiracy theory for the sake of it, not surprised coming from a United fan. The sell-on clause is only 15% and not something like 50%.

Reversing the figures, if Savio went for 59m and Marmoush for 85m, that would give net figure of 140m. Marmoush at 59m and Savio at 85m equals 144m. Hardly a major difference for a club of Man City stature.

144m in both cases actually, so no difference except in amortisation.

The point is denying the money flowing back to the German club.

As that's part of their business model, as it is for about 85 English and Welsh professional football clubs.

Not about the balance sheets of Man City or Spurs on those dealings.

Does 4m really makes a difference in today's transfer market? Not that Marmoush is worth 85m anyway.
