All 20 Premier League teams’ start to the season are analysed in this Half-Term report series.

Here, we focus on Aston Villa, who sit in 16th place after a turbulent start to 2026/27.

RESULTS SO FAR

GWResultAston Villa’s xGAston Villa’s xGC
1Brighton 4-0 Villa0.293.77
2Villa 0-1 Arsenal0.331.04
3Hull 0-0 Villa1.930.57
4Villa 1-2 Forest0.822.28
5Tottenham 2-3 Villa1.261.56

Aston Villa have had a rocky start to the season, picking up just four points from their first five matches.

They did, however, secure their first league win of 2026/27 prior to the international break, with a 3-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur in north London.

Villa have created only 4.62 expected goals (xG) in total, with four actual goals scored.

At the other end of the pitch, they have conceded nine times from 9.21 xG.

It’s hardly positive, but there is some context to apply.

Unai Emery’s men conceded 3.77 xG in their first match of the season at Brighton and Hove Albion, when Joao Gomes (£5.5m) was sent off after only 40 minutes. They didn’t have a striker available for the trip to the Amex Stadium, either.

LINE-UP LESSONS

After a disrupted start, with as many as 10 new arrivals over the summer, things are finally starting to settle down at Villa.

Zion Suzuki (£5.0m), Victor Lindelof (£4.5m), Boubacar Kamara (£5.0m), John McGinn (£5.4m), Emiliano Buendia (£5.9m) and Nicolas Jackson (£6.5m) have started every match in Gameweeks 2-5.

Gomes and Johan Manzambi (£5.9m) are likely to establish themselves as first-choice after the international break, too.

However, with Villa competing on multiple fronts, we expect to see a degree of rotation in both full-back positions, particularly once Ian Maatsen (4.4m) returns from injury, as well as the flanks, where Ibrahim Mbaye (£6.0m) and George Hemmings (£4.5m) will get plenty of minutes.

    This fallow period is great for catching up on classic films, Mulholland Drive last night (Woof!) and celebrating my birthday today. The remaining part of my brain that still fires at my age is deciding what to do with Palmer and Saka..

    I've made transfers during the break. Didn't really think about the risk of going early so hopefully won't get slapped for it.

    Andersen -> Egan
    Dedic -> Silva
    Sangare -> Tavernier

    Leaves me with this squad and team for wk6..

    Raya
    Gabriel/Egan/Konsa
    Palmer/Szob/Gross/Tavernier
    Pedro/Wissa/Haaland

    4m/Stach/Gvardiol/Silva

    0ft 0.0m

    Any areas for improvement from wk7 on? Squad seems okay to sit with for a bit after cleaning up some wildcard mistakes. Thanks.

    City's best defense is "Well ackshually it wasnt the Abu Dhabi state owned company that owns City that paid the bloated sponsorship money, it was the state of Abu Dhabi itself"

    Lol. Ship them into non league..

        PM is already sucking up to the City, crying what will happen to Manchester should foreign money stop flowing.

        The sad state of this country…

          yeah it was really disappointing to hear this and just re-enforces the feeling that they wont get a proper punishment

    Doubt theres anyone young on this site.. but in case there is. Literally everyone was calling out City's sponsorship deals as fraudulent back in the day. They were a bottom to mid table club with 0 history and out of the blue they got sponsorship deals larger than what Man United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea were getting in the same era. From companies in Abu Dhabi, owned by family members of the new owner of the club. Completely bleeding obvious that those deals were engineered to inflate the club's "legit" earnings so they could spend more than FFP rules would dictate of them.

    The only thing wrong in this case is that it took the PL so many years to find them guilty of such obvious cheating. It was baffling that nothing was done right away to stop this sham club from rising unfairly to the top. No punishment bar stripping them of all titles and sending them out of the league system would be big enough to offset what theyve gained from their cheating.

      The Premier leagues governance has quite frankly been a joke. Thank Christ for Norwegian hackers (not a sentence I ever thought I'd write).
