Captain Sensible

With the Gameweek 6 deadline of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) approaching, it’s time to have a good think about who to captain.

On paper, it’s a tough week for captaincy.

Erling Haaland (£15.6m) faces Liverpool away, and his fellow expensive talisman, Bruno Fernandes (£11.9m), is being sold by plenty of managers. Bukayo Saka (£9.6m) hosts Leeds in the early kick-off, which is not an easy fixture by any means, while there’s injury uncertainty at Chelsea, who face Bournemouth.

Should we be moving away from Messrs Haaland and Fernandes? Do we trust Arsenal’s attack against an impressive Leeds defence? Can we back a flagged Chelsea attacker? That’s what we’re considering in this week’s ‘Captain Sensible’ article.

In this piece, we will assess the on-site captaincy poll, analyse myriad player and team statistics, consult the Rate My Team (RMT) points projections, and settle on a top three for the armband, ahead of Saturday’s 11am BST deadline.

Captaincy Poll

In one of the closest captaincy polls of the season, Saka holds the lead with over 25% of the vote. The Arsenal winger scored twice for England over the international break, continuing his strong start to the season. He has netted three times in five Gameweeks.

Fernandes sits second with a mite under 15% backing, just five votes ahead of Haaland at the time of writing. The latter avoided a yellow flag, despite asking to be taken off in Norway’s final Nations League game, and has since trained. Fernandes has dropped in price since the Gameweek 5 deadline.

Elsewhere, two other players have managed to garner more than 5% support: Riccardo Calafiori (£5.9m) and Cole Palmer (£9.7m). The former is the most-owned defender in the game, currently sitting in over 50% of teams. He’s also first name in the poll list, and the player in pole position tends to pick up accidental votes! Palmer, meanwhile, remains flagged but reports suggest Chelsea are hopeful over his availability.

Saka as captain choice in a week when Bruno and Palmer have strong home fixtures is bizarre. He's getting - and missing - big chances but no evidence his ceiling is higher than theirs.

Will Palmer start? There are no real standout options this week so there could be a good spread of captain choices for a change. I'm even considering Barnes!

What has Palmer done in the last 18 months to get in that category, and I say that as a Chelsea fan? Saka has scored half his big chances and faces a team Arsenal put nine past last season.

The article rarely goes against the popular vote. The article even has Rogers better than Palmer in some respects but doesn't even mention him in the conclusion listing of preference.

He's not worth the price with the way Carrick's been using him - dropping him deep after an hour to bring on Zirkzee is a joke, and he's lost some free kicks and corners.

Fulham's fixtures are only favourable over the next 3 game weeks, so you are locking in a transfer when the fixtures turn, otherwise you are looking at 2 points max every week. Brighton's fixtures may look tougher on paper, but if they can score 3 goals against Arsenal, they can score 3 goals against anyone.

Regardless off fans view and Big Mike’s opinion, Rutter was the starting forward at the beginning of the season and Kostoulas was playing Europe.
Will they switch ? Will it stay the same?
Will they be eating into each other’s minutes?
Rutter already subbed Kostoulas at 76 minutes in the last game.

I'd await team news on quite a few of those. Most of the players you have aren't really worth ditching so unless there's news like Joao Pedro being ruled out for another month, then I'd just roll.

You could see how City look this weekend. The one player I'd look at ditching is Cherki. Rotation, dejected camp. Rogers should be attainable with a single transfer.

WC 0.3 ITB - Really think Mbuemo could be worth the punt especially if he ends up up top:

    Raya - Dubravka
Konsa - De Cuyper - Hall - Bogle - Davis

Mbuemo seems to be a player who has loads of xG and xA, hits the bar, scores but narrowly offside etc.

    Raya/4.0
    Cala/Gvardiol/DeCuyper/Egan/Thomas

Would you upgrade Egan/Thomas to 4.5ish?
Thinking DeCuyper for now and I could move him to Hall/Vuskovic/Muharemovic in 2 weeks if needed.

No I would not upgrade the defenders it is pointless. You would rarely if ever play the £4.5m guy. And Egan and Thomas sitting at a solid enough 5ppg so it's not end of world in an emergency and you can pick the one with the best fixture.

Cheers! I also know that Gvardiol is not popular but I got him early before WC and been scoring for me nicely so I'm really not convinced by two rotating 5.0 defs instead of him, then I will stick with Egan and Thomas on bench.
