MLS Fantasy continues, and we’ve asked our experts to reveal the teams they’re backing ahead of the Gameweek 33 deadline.

In this article, several experienced managers share their current squads, along with their thinking around key decisions for the round

@dmpwright

  • My four injured or doubtful players, Tyrell Malacia, Guilherme, Milan Iloski and Tai Baribo, all make way ahead of Round 33. I’m bringing in Luc de Fougerolles, Nicolás Fernández, Santiago Rodríguez and Antoine Griezmann as their replacements.
  • My final transfer will likely involve selling Kévin Denkey for the in-form Idan Toklomati. Orlando City have struggled defensively, conceding 18 goals across their last seven MLS matches. That makes Toklomati an appealing option against a side offering very little clean-sheet potential at the moment.

  • This is the penultimate week of the regular season, and the fixtures are nicely spread across the weekend. That gives me an opportunity to structure my team and captaincy selections the way I prefer. Several players from last week’s reveal ended up on the injury report, so make sure to check the latest updates late on Friday evening UK time.
  • In goal, I’m starting with Brian Schwake, with Hugo Lloris available as my backup. Nashville have an excellent defensive record this season, so I’m hoping Schwake can deliver a clean sheet.
  • My defence features a Nashville double-up, with Maxwell Woledzi joining Schwake. I’ve also brought in Malte Amundsen, who has an appealing home fixture against D.C. United, and Reid Roberts, who faces Real Salt Lake at home. Neil Pierre and Yevhen Cheberko complete my defensive options.
  • I’ve made a couple of midfield changes, bringing Leo Walta back into the team alongside Pep Biel. The rest of my midfield consists of Evander, Carles Gil and Nicolás Fernández, who has enjoyed a standout season for New York City FC.
  • Up front, Lionel Messi plays late on Sunday, giving me some flexibility with captaincy. His form has dipped slightly over the last two or three weeks, so I’m happy to explore other options before turning to him. Antoine Griezmann, who has enjoyed an excellent season at Orlando City, and Idan Toklomati complete my attack.
  • Pep Biel will start with the captain’s armband in the early fixture. With several other opportunities to switch captaincy throughout the weekend, I’ll assess my options as the matches unfold.

  • In goal, I’m likely to stick with Kristijan Kahlina and Yohei Takaoka for the final two Gameweeks of the regular season. However, Matt Freese is also under consideration, with New York City FC facing two favourable fixtures against CF Montréal and D.C. United.
  • My defence looks fairly settled, with Çalışkan, Maxwell Woledzi, Kai Wagner and Édier Ocampo Laborda all locked into my team. Nono could make way for a New York City FC defender, though, as I’m considering doubling up on their defence for the remaining fixtures.
  • I’m unlikely to make any changes in midfield, with Pep Biel, Evander, Carles Gil, Nicolás Fernández Mercau and Hany Mukhtar all set to retain their places.
  • Up front, Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann are both locks. Messi had his minutes managed in midweek, which should help his chances of featuring prominently this weekend. Meanwhile, Tai Baribo’s injury means I’ll need a replacement, with Rafael Navarro and Brian White my two preferred options.

  • My goalkeepers will remain unchanged this week, as I’m happy to stick with my current options.
  • In defence, I’m bringing in Peyton Miller, hoping he’ll feature on the wing against an Inter Miami side that has struggled defensively. Tayvon Gray also comes into the team with a favourable fixture, although I could reconsider that selection given New York City FC’s recent form.
  • In midfield, Santiago Rodríguez and Hany Mukhtar both appeal this week. They have very favourable home fixtures, making them strong options for attacking returns.
  • Up front, the in-form Antoine Griezmann replaces Robert Lewandowski. Griezmann’s recent performances make him difficult to overlook heading into the Gameweek.
