Aston Villa’s quest to escape the ever-present threat of relegation sees them visit Manchester United and entertain Queens Park Rangers in their double Gameweek 31. Aside from Burnley in their final match-up of the campaign, the Villains face only top-table sides from here on out, making it imperative they emerge victorious against the R’s.

The Prospects

Villa go head-to-head with a buoyant United outfit in the first test of their double. Following months of insipid football under new boss Louis van Gaal, the Red Devils have finally found a balance between high-tempo build-up play and positional discipline. They’ve recorded four successive league victories in recent Gameweeks – including commanding performances against top four rivals Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur – and now sit just two points shy of second-placed Manchester City. Although Wayne Rooney has been effective as the focal point of their attack in Robin van Persie’s absence – notching three goals in four outings – United’s improvement has been predicated on a new-found cohesion rather than individual flair, meaning Tim Sherwod has a tactical duel on his hands.

Christian Benteke and Gabriel Agbonlahor have banished their barren runs in recent match-ups yet could struggle to breach a rearguard that’s recorded clean sheets in their previous two clashes at Old Trafford. United have conceded the second least amount of goals (10) at home this term behind Chelsea (six), restricting Spurs and Liverpool to a combined 12 goal attempts and one big chance in their last two fixtures.

The West Midlanders should fare better when they play host to the Hoops on April 7. The visitors are on a run of five straight defeats and have only registered a single victory away from Loftus Road this term. No side has conceded as many shots from inside their box as Chris Ramsey’s team in the last five Gameweeks, which could play into the hands of Benteke, given that he ranks fifth for penalty-box touches during that period. Charlie Austin – whose goals (15) account for nearly half of QPR’s tally (31) this campaign – remains the biggest threat to Villa’s back line, despite the English marksman drawing a blank in his last three starts. Matt Phillips has been directly involved (four assists, one goal) in five of the London club’s last seven strikes and will also pose problems for Sherwood’s outfit.

Likely Lads

Christian Benteke looks determined to atone for his failings in the first two thirds of the campaign, having tallied just two goals in 18 appearances prior to Gameweek 28. Since the West Midlands derby, the imposing frontman has played with a renewed focus, bagging three goals in as many starts and netting for Belgium in their 5-0 win over Cyprus. Villa’s perilous run-in (tot, mci, EVE, WHU, sou, BUR) and blank Gameweek 33 renders the 7.5-priced forward an unlikely long-term investment, but there’s scope for strong attacking returns in the double.

Gabby Agbonlahor matched Benteke’s goalscoring exploits in recent matches while playing up front alongside the Belgian hitman in a 4-4-2 set-up. At 5.3, Agbonlahor has the potential to offer great value in the double, yet Sherwood may elect to revert to a 4-3-3 – that transitions to a 4-5-1 when not in possession – for their trip to Old Trafford, shifting the Villa stalwart onto the flank. That being said, Agbonlahor has fashioned two more attempts on goal (11) than Benteke (nine) in their five fixtures under the new man in charge, making him an enticing prospect if Sherwood retains the two-striker formation – a scenario more likely, given his propensity to attack.

Scott Sinclair (5.2) could be the next best bet in terms of attacking returns beyond the Villains’ strike duo. Although the former Swansea winger has created just one chance for his team-mates in the last five Gameweeks, he’s mustered seven shots from inside the box in his four appearances over that period – put into perspective, only three midfielders (David Silva, Alexis Sanchez and Sadio Mane) have produced more shots from close-range in their respective last four matches. Furthermore, three goals in Villa’s previous seven fixtures in all competitions is evidence of Sinclair’s scoring potential.

The Punts

In spite of Villa’s miserable form under former manager Paul Lambert, Brad Guzan still ranks among the top nine goalkeepers in the Fantasy roster in terms of total points accrued (99). With only one clean sheet in his last 10 outings, the American shot-stopper is certainly a left-field choice, yet QPR’s dreadful scoring record on their travels (10 goals in 14 match-ups) bodes well for a potential home shut-out. With so many injury concerns at the back for Sherwood, Guzan offers a guaranteed pair of starts and his average of 3.3 point per appearance is superior to any defensive team-mate.

Charles N’Zogbia has hardly set the world alight in his 1024 minutes of pitch time this campaign, tallying two assists to date. However, the 5.2-priced winger’s underlying statistics over the past five Gameweeks suggest he’s been unlucky not to improve on those figures, having attempted a shot on goal with greater regularity (33.9 minutes) than any of his team-mates. N’Zogbia has now started each of the last three under the new man in charge but has failed to make it past the 80-minute mark on each occasion as Sherwood freshens up his options on the flanks late on in matches.

Mane will have more chances on goal I reckon. Siggy is more a nostalgic choice I think Mane plays up front so its a no brainer.

Mane not really "up front" Pelle and Long both started last game together iirc

Plays very advanced and definitely is one of their most dangerous players for sure

Rather Mane's near full mins to Siggy's 60 min games. Also SOT still challenging for Europe whereas Swans are done for the season.

True, but the problem is that SOTON just really do not score (much). Mane's got game, but Southampton's game is to win 1-0. I am needing to downgrade Sanchez to upgrade Austin to Costa in 2 weeks, and am considering Mane, Siggy, Hendo, Downing, and I have to say, I am inclined to get either Siggy or Hendo when the time to act comes (need to see if Liverpool have a blank first).

In particular, the one concerning biggest errors/rookie mistakes from sometime during the last week.

I need to replace Forster, other goalie is Jakupovic

    A) Myhill (have Cawson)
    B) Davis ( have Clyne)
    C) Flappyhandski ( have Naughton)
    D) Migs

Was on B but now leaning towards A

I think Saints have nothing to lose and will have to attack to win their games as from now on, WBrom however, will ork the bus on most games

Three most owned players Eriksen (27),

Sorry for the late reply. I would definitely go for Gabby out of the 3. Sherwood has gone with 2 up top and Gabby is brilliant in a 2 man strike force. Last tiem he palyed that was ehn John Carew was playing and they hit it off too. He is a totally different player up front it is where he started off originally and I don;t know ho got the idea to ever play him on wing- Yes he has pace which wingers need but other than that he is not great on the wing.

I would have him in if i didn't already have Benteke before Sherwood made the changes.

That development should've started 2-3 years ago, you can't just throw individuals into a team and expect them to beat teams playing with one another since they were 16 or so.

I agree, and it's something I imagine we'll regret in the future. But, hey, better late than never? We should get behind this bunch because, imo, could really go places. The quality is there. We're just 5 years behind the Germans in terms of development, coaching and training. Shame.

Only Wilshere and Sterling have the raw talent to become what it takes.

Compare this to the Germany or even Belgian 21's, it's pure mediocre.

I think they're all talented players, it's a very good U21 side. Won't end up World Cup winners, but I certainly wouldn't be damning them to failure before they're even 21!

Agreed, but you mentioned individual talent, which I think is there. It will no doubt be driven out of them by the England set up.

      3. Somalion
        • 16 Years

I somewhat agree here. Besides the playing together aspect (which is an accurate observation and very true) I think that the players may not be as good as some think. There's a bit of a trend in assuming that these young English lads are at the same level as the young German players or others such as the Spanish but more and more I think this is false.

Now that isn't to say that that is a poor team, it is a good one. But I am not sure it'll be in competition with the teams the likes of Germany will throw out.

        1. Doolittle
          • 13 Years

They certainly aren't on the same level as their German and Spanish counterparts, but there are good players in there. Some people do overrate English talent (Harry Kane's suddenly better than Aguero after a good half-season), but we also don't want to write them off before they've even got going. We do build 'em up to knock 'em down in this country.

          1. Somalion
            • 16 Years

I agree with you completely, that is my point that it can be a bit of a trend of overrating young players simply because we watch them more often (plus a lot of fans of the PL look down on La Liga and the BL without realising that their development systems are, by and large, superior to English clubs). I wouldn't write them off though, a good team there that can develop into something very strong.

Yeah, it's definitely an inherent thing within English football, we need to reassess how we view the league and look at our development strategies, which are clearly substandard. We need to do something to address the gap between us and the top sides.

I say "we"; I'll be contributing very little towards it.

I'm Irish, so I'll be doing absolutely nothing but you're right 😀

There is that problem, I think part of it is the fact that countries like Ireland and England play a number of different sports while Germany and Spain and the likes, while having other sports that they excel in, would have a greater % of children playing football through their youth.

Really? Off the top of my head:

          Spain: Isco(?), Jese, Deulofeu

Kevin Volland for Germany. Evidence - being the 30+ goal a season man in my Champions League winning Leicester side (you'll appreciate that) on FM. Goretzka was in midfield as well. As we all know, FM is never wrong.

Volland, Draxler, Ter Stegen, Gotze is only 22, Ginter, Can, Meyer, Mustafi only 22. More coming through the pipeline as well!

As for Spain, they have a bit more of an aging team but some of the names you mentioned plus the likes of Denis Suarez, Sandro Ramirez (one to watch, 19 year old striker for Barcelona) and a few defenders like Moreno.

The Belgians as well have ridiculous output.

But my point is that the players we are used to, we will naturally think are better than U21 players for Spain/Germany as we haven't heard as much of them, if you get my drift?

              Wow. Germany. Amazing.

Yeah, I get you. That's where our bias and one dimensional thinking comes into play. Especially for me, anyway. Watching these guys week in week out perhaps has a big influence.

Germany have been working towards this for so long. Brilliant.

The German system is truly ridiculous. A big loss for Spain was Rafinha deciding to swap to Brazil.

Yeah, it does have an impact I think. Nothing against the young English players that are coming through, Ireland certainly hasn't had a team remotely at that level for an awfully long time! But right now I can't predict them developing to a stage that over takes the Germans/others.

But that is always subject to change!

I have enjoyed my break from FPL - it's always nice of the PL to give us fantasy managers a week off from time to time.

Any obvious transfers for this lot?

    Foster / Krul
    Terry / Clyne / Toby / Dawson / Bellerin
    Hazard / Sanchez / Eriksen / Silva / Ameobi
    Aguero / Kane / Austin

    2 FTs and 0.2M ITB

I'm thinking Foster > Myhill as one of the moves.

    Any suggestions very much appreciated!

so when it comes to the matter of your third chelsea player (assuming most have a chelsea defender and Hazard already)

the question for many, including me, is fabregas vs costa

i remember earlier in the season when costa was scoring a good amount, fabregas would still manage to match or even outscore him many times because of the BPS he'd rack up + one assist

any thoughts on whether this is a trend that could resurface? Getting Costa in would be ideal, but is it the best value, considering good availability of other cheaper striking options (austin, giroud, etc)

    1. Debauchy
      • 12 Years

Costa for me , for 33 and the double , then gone for Giroud (again) Going with the reasoning that Fabregas' form tapers off towards end of season ?

    a) Sanchez to Mata and take a hit next week to sell Mata or Eriksen
    b) Sanchez to any mid for 6.9 or less (have Mane)
    c) Keep Sanchez, save the FT and re-asses next week

Against the minnows he probably can but we'll be so exposed against any decent team with Sturridge's poor defensive work rate.

If you have 2 FTs , I would go for it . Even if only 1 , with no other issues could be genius.

It depends on how much more City are willing to pay you . I'd say alot of people would have a tough time turning down double wages if they were put in the same position

Nah... I would still prefer gametime because I love football and playing can only improve/develop me, not sitting on bench. And since they are footballer, they must have more love for this game than me.
As I said, maybe money is everything for them 🙂

I think it would be very easy to get hooked on the lifestyle and the money and the football just becomes a means to fund it . Some might fancy living in London or even Manchester instead of the Midlands

I think it depends on the situation.

At this level, Sterling could earn 100k+ a week at Liverpool and play all the time. Regardless of how much more City offer, he's set for a life and not just a simple life at that. So, if it was me, I certainly wouldn't care less about any doubling of wages if I was earning enough to buy a new house every couple of months.

At the lower levels, where players have to think about retirement and making their money last when their short career is over, I definitely would understand joining a team to sit on the bench for double the wages.

Yeah , but most sportsman have a short span of employment , so it makes sense to make as much money as possible in that "short span" Doubt Sterling would be spending that much time on benches anyway.

Meh. You hit a stage when enough money is enough, he's reportedly being offered 180k a week now. Assume he has 10 years left in him (which I think is probably under what he actually has left at 20 years of age). We're talking about 180k x 52 x 10 = About 93 million... With tax taking a fair amount of that he could still wind up earning 50 million or so (I know I'm assuming his pay stays the same but realistically it is unlikely to sharply decrease).

Now factor in bonuses etc. Multi multi millionaire.

I'm so confuddled and would love some options?
I've two free transfers (0 ITB) and I'm thinking:

    1. Wilson & Walters to McAuley & Philips

    Or

    2. Kosc & Sanchez to Lescott & Philips

Obvious 1. Looks far superior but 2 allows me upgrade Austin & Walters to Costa & Mane/Siggy and not worry about fielding 11 gameweek 33

    Krul Panti
    Terry Bertrand Kosc PVA Wilson
    Hazard Silva Eriksen Sanchez Walters
    Aguero Kane Austin
