The Wear-Tyne takes pride of place in Sunday’s pair of league fixtures, with Newcastle and Sunderland scrapping for points in the bottom half of the table. A win for the Toon would arrest a run of three successive defeats, while the Black Cats have a solitary victory to their name since these fierce rivals last met in Gameweek 17.

Before that, the early kick off sees Burnley’s obliging defence attempt to stifle a red-hot Harry Kane as they entertain Tottenham Hotspur at Turf Moor.

Fresh off a hat trick against Leicester City last Gameweek, Kane will be under strict surveillance from the hosts’ rearguard in what could be a game of goals. Considering that the Lilywhites haven’t earned a single clean sheet in their previous seven matches – and Hugo Lloris is sidelined with a leg injury – out-of-form Burnley marksman Danny Ings will fancy his chances of putting a five-match goal drought to bed.

The tea-time derby clash – hosted at the Stadium of Light – takes on an altogether different complexion from the reverse fixture at St James’ Park in December, with two new managers at the helm. Newcastle are down to the bare bones in defence as a result of long-term injuries and suspensions, meaning there’s only one fit centre-back (Michael Williamson) at the disposal of Magpies boss John Carver. Meanwhile, Sunderland boast a relatively clean bill of health – aside from Wes Brown’s absence with a knee injury – as Jermain Defoe seeks a goal for the first time in seven Gameweeks.

Always captain a double gameweek player...its a tried and tested formula and Benteke and Austin were the stand out picks, on the boards, on RMT, in our Scout Picks. There were plenty saying it.

he did make a point there..though people choose to ignore austin/benteke not becos of ability but mainly due to the fact that that both have a blank coming..and also unwilling to part with their current strikers

No I said that there were only two realistic options this week - Austin and Benteke. Drafting in Philips etc was going overboard I thought. If I didn't own Austin this week I'd have got him or Benteke in - its always worth a go captaining a double gameweek player. That's something I've never wavered from in seven seasons (only failed me twice Zigic and Milner).

            • 14 Years
            10 years, 10 months ago

Well, the hot topic has dropped off, but it was along the lines of "is this the first DGW that we can ignore?" or something similar due to the lack of any appealing options.

I was posing that as a question. It's starting a discussion on it for people to put their opinions. Some like me favoured Austin or Benteke, some went really to town on it and got in the likes of Sinclair, others ignored it.

Yeah, I get that mate, but was just trying to point out that it is with the benefit of hindsight that you can now say "It was the sensible thing to do. This week's top capt. choices were always Austin and Benteke" given that a week or so ago you thought that the question of ignoring the DGW was worthy of posing on the boards.

            From Friday's Scout Picks article

"I’ve opted for just two double Gameweek players this week. On paper Aston Villa and QPR’s chances of success are hardly awe-inspiring and I feel that only Christian Benteke and Charlie Austin offer the potential to perform well as Fantasy assets this week."
