With the penultimate week of the season fast approaching, and indeed the last double Gameweek of the campaign, the question on everyone’s minds is… Which Arsenal players should I get in?

Rotation is a worry, and the minutes of all the Arsenal assets are at risk, with fringe players such as Jack Wilshere, Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck chomping at the bit to make their mark.

What I vote for, however, is a logical way of looking at the players. If all Arsenal assets are at risk, why worry about which ones may/may not play? Let’s try and determine who is the most likely candidate to rack up the points over the double Gameweek. Alexis Sanchez is, without a doubt, the best option due to his Fantasy Premier League FPL) points tally this year and his ability to deliver explosive returns. But who else in the centre of the park should we be considering?

Similar to an article I posted a few months ago, I will break down three of the Arsenal midfield’s ‘likely lads’. Hopefully, this will help anyone that is deliberating which midfielder to go for. The three categories I will be considering are: Goal Threat, Assist Potential and Form. All stats will be relevant for the last six matches.

Goal Threat

As you may have heard from the latest Scoutcast, Jonty has been creating tables and analysing the stats to try and work out who is the most likely player to score goals during the double Gameweek. With Sanchez sitting top of all midfielders for shots inside the box over the last six, it may surprise you to learn that just below him, sits the diminutive figure of Santi Cazorla. In fact, Cazorla has produced only one shot in the box fewer than Sanchez over this period. Aaron Ramsey also fares well on this list, sitting seventh overall for midfielders.

Worryingly for Mesut Ozil owners, the German has produced half as many shots in the box as Ramsey over the last six and only a third as many as Sanchez and Cazorla. Clearly, Ozil is not one for receiving balls in the box and shooting.

Interestingly, when we look at touches in the box (again Sanchez leads the way out of the Arsenal midfield) there is not a lot of difference between Cazorla, Ramsey and Ozil, and all three midfielders have a respectable position on the table. What we can gather from this is that of these players, although all three are getting the ball in the box with some regularity, it is predominantly Ramsey and particularly Cazorla who are going for goal. Ramsey has had more success than Cazorla (with two goals to none), but the stats suggest it is Cazorla who is primed to leave his mark. With penalties in his locker, a goal or two from Cazorla looks very likely.

Winner: Cazorla

Assist Potential

Assist potential should not be ignored in FPL, and noticing players who take corners, free kicks and regularly tee up their team mates can really help boost your rank during the season. With a midfield such as Arsenal’s, where seemingly anyone can score, having a player who is responsible for setting up his team-mates could be a good way to go in this double Gameweek.

Some interesting names head up the ‘chances created’ column in the members section. Leicester’s Marc Albrighton leads the way with 19 chances created, which averages out at over three chances a game. A number of players sit just below him, with one fewer chance created, and importantly for Fantasy  managers one of these names is Ozil. Ozil boasts a superior pass completion to the rest of his teammates (good for BPS), the highest creativity score in ICT by a country mile compared to the rest of his team mates and a decent successful corner statistic (just under 50%). However, where it matters, Ozil has not registered a single assist over this period. Clearly, poor finishing has cost Ozil points and, more than likely, a place in a lot of peoples teams.

Cazorla is second of the three, and has created half as many chances as Ozil over the last six. Ramsey is even further down the list, having created two chances fewer than Cazorla. Cazorla does occasionally take corners, boosting his appeal, but with a conversion rate of 33%, Ozil is clearly doing a better job.

Winner: Ozil

Form

Ramsey 2, 9, 11, 2, 12, 2 = 38 (3 goals, 2 assists)

Ozil 3, 10, 3, 3, 2, 2 = 23 (1 goal, 0 assists)

Cazorla 6, 2, 3, 2, 6, 2= 21 (0 goals, 1 assist)

As with the other two categories, there is a stand-out winner here. Ramsey may not have the best attacking stats of the three players, but he has been delivering more-than-solid points returns, with three goals in his last six matches showing he is a midfielder who is taking his chances. Despite both Ozil and Cazorla creating more chances for team-mates, it is Ramsey who has benefited from better finishing, although this trend may not continue – especially due to the number of chances Ozil is creating, which will (surely) lead to returns.

However, goals and assists breed confidence, both in the player and the manager. On the back of this current form, can Ramsey really be afforded a rest while third place is still up in the air? He seems to have hit a purple patch at the perfect time.

Winner: Ramsey

Conclusion

Hopefully some of the stats I have presented here will give you a better indication of which of these midfielders are likely to score points. In my opinion, Ramsey has decent stats for both goal threat and assist potential, and while not excelling in either, he has the form to indicate that he (and others) can make the most of what he conjures up. For me he is the stand-out choice to go alongside Sanchez, or even replace him.

In second place, Cazorla’s underlying attacking stats lead me to believe he is a better choice than Ozil. His penalty duties, combined with the fact that he shares corners with the German, indicates that he is likely to be in the points over the coming weeks. In fact, his attacking stats rival those of Sanchez and the Spaniard may prove to be a shrewd transfer for Fantasy managers to go alongside the Chilean, or even instead of him. Ozil looks set for a double Gameweek of mediocrity, unless someone can start putting away his chances. I would rather take a gamble on someone who is in control of their own destiny.

Yep. It really comes down to that.

On the article, I really have a pet hate of people equating FPL returns with "form". Form is how well a player performs on the pitch. FPL returns are influenced by that but also by a large dollop of luck or happenstance.

Ozil was voted "player of the month" for April by Arsenal fans, having also won it in February. I think that says more about his form than how many FPL points he has accrued.

To be fair I think AZ is looking at FPL form (goals and assists only) rather than the more widely accepted definition of form such as that used by fans when voting for player of the month which takes into account the all round performance of a player and their influence in games etc. Like you say say there can be a big variation between the two.

Yeah I understand that. That's why I called it a "pet hate". I guess I have been going to watch football for much longer than I have been managing a FPL team. 😕

Completely fair point Ruth, but know I am referring to strictly Fpl form only! Carrick for example is the definition of a form player (look at man u when he plays vs when he doesn't!) but fpl wise, his 'form' is rubbish

        1. Ruth_NZ

Yep. Understood. But I still disagee actually. 😕

I don't think "FPL form" exists as a concept that is of any value whatsoever.

Yes, there are players who, however well they play, are less likely to be rewarded with FPL points. The DM position is notoriously unrewarded by how the FPL scoring system works and players like Carrick, Matic, Schneiderlin, Noble, Coquelin, Wanyama, Cattermole and so on will never be very popular picks because of that. That's not "FPL form", it's the position they play.

Someone like Ozil, however, has shown himself to be very capable of big points returns. If he has been playing well but not scoring many points it means he has been unlucky, nothing more. Last time I looked he had created more chances than any other PL midfielder over recent weeks. The fact that very few have been converted is just happenstance. This is especially true when you are comparing him with other Arsenal players who are playing in the same team with the same quality of player around them.

He's not in "poor FPL form" at all. He has been unlucky and the law of averages suggests that a correction is likely to occur at any time.

Two weeks ago, people were saying that Benteke was in good form (good "FPL form") and were falling over themselves to get him in, many taking immediate or delayed hits to do so. But that bandwagon was caused by a run of FPL points based on a freakish conversion rate - something like 11 goals from 13 shots on target as I recall. Players get freakish runs like that but they don't last. He was never worth a hit to get in unless we are going all the way back to the GW31 DGW which is a different matter entirely.

People like to say that Benteke (or players in a similar run of luck) are in good "FPL form". But as far as I am concerned that's just another excuse for chasing last week's points. And following "FPL form" is one of the best ways to mislead yourself and/or others that a FPL manager could find. When a player is scoring a lot of FPL points you need to look at why. That's what will tell you whether it is likely to continue or not.

Some really interesting points there, unfortunately though stats and fpl returns (which is the key intended outcome here) just don't always add up.

Ramsey and Toure are the perfect examples of this, I don't think you can really say either of these players were 'lucky' - their stats were pretty standard but they were taking their chances, sometimes players who are in a purple patch (both fpl wise and in real life) become almost essential in the game, even if their stats aren't great.

Too often people are blinded by stats, Counting has had a poor season fpl wise but a great season as an actual football player. I tjink in certain cases it is worth separating fpl form and league form as I do in most of my articles. A player with a great conversion rate, as you mentioned, is often a much better pick than someone who is shooting more or creating more chances. I'd rather have Benteke in my team taking fewer shorts than someone like Ozil for example, Benteke is delivering consistent fpl returns and Ozil is not.

Yes, the "purple patch". That screws the whole statistics thing up really because there's no doubt that confidence has a huge effect on performance in all kinds of sports and there's nothing better for confidence than recent success.

So now we have a number of variables and I'll try to summarise:

              1. Actual playing form - assessed both by statistics (e.g. chances created) and by eye (e.g. Ozil voted Arsenal's player of the month);
              2. How well that actual playing form has been reflected in FPL points and why (judgement required here);
              3. If FPL points are in advance of statistical norms (e.g. very high conversion rate chances to goals or long run of clean sheets) why is that?
              (a) Luck (for instance Cazorla's run of penalties)?
              (b) Purple patch (for instance Sanchez October to December when Arsenal had a lot of players out injured and he was the main man)?
              (c) Positional advantages (for instance Aguero in 4-2-3-1 against 4-2-2-2)?
              (d) Team-based (for instance Southampton defenders earlier in the season)?
              4. Same as 3 but in reverse (when FPL returns are falling short of statistical norms).

I think I got the main ones there?

The common denominator is you have to use your judgement as to why things are happening. Following last week's FPL points can work sometimes (let's call that the Yaya effect) and fail more often (let's call that the Bolasie effect). Following stats can work sometimes (the Tadic effect) and fail sometimes (also the Tadic effect). Looking at positional and/or tactical variances is probably more reliable if you can get it right but harder to do.

Judgement is the quality most required. Because probability lives somewhere between recent track record, statistics, psychology (player and manager) and tactical (team) awareness both of the team the player represents and their upcoming opponents. And even the weighting between these variables isn't constant.

I honestly think that choosing between the Arsenal mids is such a lottery that if it weren't for the DGW I wouldn't have any of them. Put differently, my judgement is not good enough for me to feel confident that I can pick the right one. Hazard and Silva are far more reliable picks because they are more central to their teams' attacking play than any one Arsenal midfielder is.

Thanks for the article. I would have made Ramsey the 'threat' winner too. Although Santi's had slightly more shots, it depends on what type of shots. Rambo's shots seem to always be bigger chances. He has a knack with those late runs into the box.

I have Bellerin, Sanchez and Giroud. I have a free double transfer this week. Would I be crazy to switch Bellerin and Coutinho out for Ramsey and unspecified cheap defender?

This is the problem with stats. Cazorla really isn't very threatening if you watch Arsenal play. He plays deeper than Ramsey and most of his shots are from range or potshots when he's being crowded out in the box - trickling to the keeper or be blocked. Ramsey gets in far more dangerous positions, often like a second striker on the break, and when he finally takes a shot it's usually 1v1 with the keeper or in a good position. Ozil just doesn't look interested in scoring goals, he loves doing slick touches and cute little passes deep or out wide and he never shoots.

Watching them play makes me think Ramsey is by far the most dangerous although Cazorla could get a penalty or two.

I'm having a hard time deciding:

    Bertrand -> Kosc
    Hazard ->Ramsey/Cazorla

I've got Giroud already. It was going to be clear cut and get Kosc in but the likely hood of Hazard getting a rest and him being off form is making me consider going for three arse attackers.

    Afternoon gents,

Took a punt last week and went with Ramsey, Ozil and Bellerin which whilst spectacularly backfiring still helped me hit 95 pts and sit 16 behind my ML rival.

However, am looking to get Sanchez in as hes the surefire captaincy pick and relying on other differentials to close that gap.

    So all for -4

    A) Hazard & Ozil - Sanchez and Mahrez
    B) Hazard & Ozil - Sanchez and Sunderland mid
    C) Ozil & Terry - Sanchez & Wasilewski
    D) Ozil & Terry - Sanchez & PVA
    E) Replace Ozil with Rambo for any of above
F (yes were still going)) Other?

Have Panti and will have 3 arsenal for dgw.

Good article, shows again that we shouldn't be blinded by stats. It's all about getting attacking returns/points in fpl.

How to counter my opposition 32 pt lead ATM.

    Me
    Panti (Myhill)
    Kosi Terry PVA (Sclupp Bertrand)
    Sanchez Silva Hazard Rambo Hendo
    Aguero Kane (Vardy)

    Him
    Panti (K Davis)
    Wasi Terry Bellerin (Mereno Bruce)
    Sanchez Sterling Hendo Silva (Jones)
    Kane Tekkers Aguero

Both have ft's I am worried about Tekkers and I am guessing he will get another Arsenal mid.

    Cheers

I like this. I think it might have been improved by analysis of other Arsenal players though because our objective is to get the three highest scoring players not just mids. I also think Özil shades Ramsey on overall stats AND on pitch-time. But Caz is 2nd in my book.

Hey fellas. Who to start this week
-Haz, Fellaini or Mane? Dont have the luxury of a sub option as its for a draft league game. 🙁

Really wish I didn't have Ospina clogging up an Arsenal spot... Don't think it's worth 4 points to shift though. I like Cazorla the most of the non-Sanchez Arsenal midfielders.
