Saido Berahino bags a brace as West Brom sweep aside newly-crowned champions Chelsea at the Hawthorns. Chris Brunt is also amongst the goals, whilst Cesc Fabregas sees red as the Blues lose for only the third time this term.

Blues pay the penalty for complacency

Chelsea fell to a comprehensive 3-0 defeat at the hands of West Bromwich Albion as their 16-match unbeaten run came crashing to an end. Despite suggesting he would field a number of young players at the Hawthorns, Jose Mourinho made just three alterations to his starting XI, drafting in Diego Costa, Gary Cahill and Nemanja Matic in place of Kurt Zouma, John Obi Mikel and Willian.

Costa’s inclusion came as a slight surprise given that Mourinho previously stated he would only field the Spain international again this campaign if the Blues were in desperate need of his services. The Portuguese boss clearly deemed him fit enough to start and was vindicated when Costa came through his 63-minute stint unscathed. Spearheading the champions’ attack – with Loic Remy shifted out to the right flank – Costa looked rusty on his return and couldn’t fashion a single attempt on goal.

Mourinho resisted the temptation to rest Eden Hazard for the Baggies encounter, maintaining the Belgian livewire’s 100% appearance record in the league. Hazard drew a blank for the second successive fixture following Chelsea’s title win, yet the London club’s home tie against Sunderland on the final day should convince owners to keep faith with the PFA Player of the Year.

Cesc Fabregas’ 30% ownership were left bemused when the deep-lying playmaker kicked the ball into a congregation of West Brom players – hitting Chris Brunt on the back of the head – during a break in play. Fabregas was awarded a red card for the bizarre incident and will now sit out the Black Cats tie in addition to the first two matches of next season. His absence could persuade owners to reinvest the funds from his sale and recruit one of Manchester City’s high-priced in-form midfielder (Yaya Toure and David Silva) ahead of their home clash against Southampton.

The Blues have now conceded four times and scored once since clinching the title and with Mourinho admitting his side have eased off since securing the trophy, some may even consider swapping out their Chelsea assets, with the Blues showing little motivation in last night’s lacklustre display.

Berahino nets brace in Baggies triumph

Having been recalled to the side in place of Victor Anichebe, Saido Berahino netted for the first time in eight starts, including a second-half spot-kick. Chris Brunt scored the hosts’ third of the night with a rasping near-post shot that Thibaut Courtois arguably should have dealt with better. The Northern Irish midfielder is enjoying a strong finish to the campaign, with one goal and four assists in six starts, and is clearly enjoying his move back into midfield, with Joleon Lescott fielded at left-back again.

The Baggies’ defence continues to impress under Tony Pulis’ governance, following their fourth clean sheet in five outings. Impressively, the midlands side have also kept out United, Liverpool and Palace over that period. Tony Pulis’ men face an uphill in their attempt to secure another shut-out on the final day when they travel to the Emirates. That being said, the fact that the Gunners failed to score in their past two home encounters offers some reason for optimism. On the flip side, Arsenal’s recent formidable defensive record at home (two goals conceded in five) does limit out interest in Berahino despite his upturn in form.

Albrighton looks a good punt to me, at home to QPR. It's tricky not to field a hangover team for GWK 38. I'm looking at 3-5-2:

    Mignolet
    Terry, Monreal, Schlupp
    Hazard, Sanchez, Silva, Hendo, Albrighton
    Aguero (C), Kane

    Bench: Austin, PVA, McAuley

Who's the biggest bit of deadwood here?

    A Mignolet
    B Monreal
    C Kane
    D Hendo
    E Hazard

    Schmeichel

    Skrtel, Terry, Smalling

    Sanchez, Ramsey, Hazard, Hendo

    Kun, Vardy, Giroud

    Panti, Cambi, McShane, PvA

Tekkers won't be rested imo. The team needs confidence before the FA cup final and what better way to get it that to beat Burnley in the last game at home!

Do you mean Yaya would take FK's away from Kolarov? Not enthusiastic about a defender transfer tbh.

yes Yaya would take free kicks away

I agree, I'd rather spend my 2 FTs in attack and would like a run with Tekkers

I have many of your players, and am inclined to play cambiasso over Hendo. I like him to maybe score against QPR. I do not own Vardy, so cambiasso represents my Leicester attack (I own Schmeichel and Morgan, too, and am starting both).

Not crazy about that. I can see cambi outscoring punch, and a trade for defender unless it was a high scoring one, seems sub optimal. I'd make trades for forwards or mids who you think could have the big "mane/Bolasie" blowout, and hope for the best. Shoot for the moon, not a clean sheet.

            indeed

Ah, so close. I though about a hit for costa, too, but now think it is more prudent to just go straight to either gomis, lukaku, or Cisse, etc. then, hope for best. Chelsea lack motivation. Not worth the hit.

Arsenal and Liverpool target James Milner has fuelled speculation that he is set to leave Manchester City by rejecting a contract reportedly worth over £30 million.

According to The Express, the proposed contract from Manchester City is £165,000-a-week, including additional bonuses.

Surely Arsenal aren't going to pay him anywhere near 165k?

Maybe he just wants to play more often......which I don't see at Arsenal either. Maybe Liverpool.

In fact Milner is going to be Sterling's replacement isn't he? 😀 😀 😀

You'd have though the TV money would result in lower ticket prices, but no, they'd rather the players pocket it than the fans.

I saw some stat a few months ago that PSG would still be one of the Top 5 earning clubs worldwide even if they sold no tickets.

Clubs don't need fans anymore (well they think they don't).

If the players didn't get it then the men in suits from the boardroom would...The chances of them putting ticket prices down if players didn't get paid so much is nil...

The choice is the players get obscene amounts of money or the suits get it...either that or transfers become even higher.

Agreed. It's not like the players need these ridiculous salaries to survive. Even if their wages were only reduced by say 20% then they could probably lower each ticket price by £10 to £15.

So measure Milner up against better players who are on a lot less. There's a whole load of them playing in the Champions League final in a few weeks time.

A lot of the wages outside the PL are significantly lower, certainly.

i'm not sure what your point is. Milner has been offered a lot of money but in the context of wages at that club, it's not that absurd. He's been one of their better players when he starts games and is earning less than a lot of players at that club who aren't better than him.

The papers blow it up. The actual baseline figure for his contract is probably much lower; they're counting all the performance bonuses such as winning the league, winning CL, making full appearance every match, scoring and assisting every match etc...

Chelsea are closing in on a cut-price deal to sign Marseille star Giannelli Imbula.

According to French newspaper L’Equipe, Chelsea are long-time admirers of the 22-year-old and could be about to launch an £8.6m bid for the anchorman.

The club are frequently linked with scouting trips to Marseille and reports suggested last month that Chelsea would have to fork out around £20m for his services.

      • 13 Years

I don't really have any attackers I'd like to ditch... maybe uhm, Kane, Cazorla, but I can't really see the big upside to ditching. Seems more risky than to keep since as you say, last GW is a lottery.

Either way the transfer is a gamble but the average upside of an outfield player is surely much higher than that of a goalkeeper. I would have said this is even more likely to be true on the final matchday where the majority of teams are only playing to please their home fans on the last day. I'd have thought that would result in more attacking performances over more defensive ones?

Thoughts on taking a hit for a defender in the last week?

Need to get rid of Clyne otherwise I'd be playing Baird (potential 2min cameo, or risk minus points against City playing Clyne) but also wanting to upgrade Kane.

    A) Clyne > Smalling/Anyone
    B) Kane > £7m
    C) Cambiasso > Young/Puncheon (bench Kane)
    D) Clyne + Kane > Wasil + Lukaku (-4)
    E) Clyne + Cambiasso > Smalling + £6.6m (-4, bench Kane)

Thanks for the reply, he's started the last 7 or so games with more than half lasting past 60mins, hoping this trend continues

Yep, sensible (decent VC in case Tekkers doesn't play)

I think tekkers will get around 70 mins no matter what. Then taken off for the Final.

If he starts, point expectation should be about same as Kun. If not, Kun comes in and all is dandy

In a couple of cash-prize MLs... comfortably ahead in one but 25 points behind in the second with pretty much identical teams so looking for a couple of punts this weekend.

    Thoughts on this?

Walters and Giroud out for Mahrez (c) and Benteke (rival doesn't have Tekkers)

In similar situation as per post above. Think Tekkers could either explode or not start but could be a good differential.
