Steven Gerrard edges closer to a first-team return. Capello inisists Wayne Rooney will be fine. Rafael Van der Vaart is set for six weeks on the sidelines while Mikel Arteta’s departure has Jack Rodwell eyeing up a regular starting position. Carlos Tevez is looking forward to his return to the Man City starting XI and QPR’s new owner Tony Fernandez is -allegedly- lining up a loan move for none other than David Beckham. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

Jack Rodwell is looking to the positive side of Mikel Arteta’s Everton exit. The young midfielder struggled with injury last term but feels he is now 100% fit and is hoping to step up to the task of filling the gap left by the Spaniard’s last-minute deadline day departure:

Mikel is a great player…he will be sorely missed. But we’ve got a lot of young players who can fill in. I’m ready to step up and fill his boots, definitely.

What I’ve been missing in my career is 30 games back to back and getting a good run of form and confidence, so hopefully this season I can do that. I’m ready now. I feel fit, I feel sharp and focused. I believe this is the season for me.

Fabio Capello has moved to allay fears of an injury to Wayne Rooney. The Man United forward picked up the problem in England’s 3-0 win in Bulgaria and with Fantasy managers fretting over his availability, the Italian confirmed he expects his star man to be fit for the midweek game against Wales:

Rooney has a problem with his foot but I think he should be okay for Tuesday. It’s a different part of his foot. His big toe. It’s nothing, I think but we will have to wait for a minimum of 24 hours.

Steven Gerrard is nearing a return to first-team action. The Liverpool midfielder has been out since mid-March with a groin problem and has played just six times since Kenny Dalglish returned to the Anfield club, but reckons he could be ready for a mid-September showdown with Spurs in Gameweek 5:

‘I won’t be involved against Stoke next Saturday but my plan is to hopefully be involved in the game against Tottenham. It will be Kenny’s decision when I come back in.’

New QPR owner Tony Fernandes has wasted little time in bankrolling a number of signings since arriving at the club last month. Next up on his radar is none other than David Beckham. The LA Galaxy midfielder is out of contract in October and is allegedly considering a return to the Premier League- Fernandes is looking to boost the club’s profile and in that respect, Beckham would clearly fit the bill.

According to reports, Carlos Tevez is now content with his stay at Man City. The Argentine has been itching to leave the Etihad Stadium and has made no secret of his dislike of the area but seems to have been won round and is looking forward to turning out for Roberto Mancini’s side in the imminent future:

I think I’ll be playing again soon. I don’t think I’ll have lost my place because I’m captain and the symbol of a big club like City. I feel like everything is different to last year. Now I’m with my wife and daughters in England.’

Shane Long has been ruled out of the Republic of Ireland’s game against Russia on Tuesday with a calf problem. The West Brom forward has bagged two goals in his first three games and Roy Hodgson will be sweating over his fitness ahead of next weekend’s trip to Norwich, with Peter Odemwingie also sidelined with an ankle injury.

Rafael Van der Vaart’s hamstring problems continue to play up. The Dutchman limped off in Tottenham’s recent 5-1 home hammering by Man City and, according to the club’s official website, looks to be sidelined for six weeks. This could promote Emmanuel Adayor to penalties, boosting the Fantasy merits of the loan signing as Harry Redknapp’s side look to bounce back from two straight defeats.

So how do we think this Tevez news affects Dzeko?

Totally different type of player, so maybe Aguero etc are more at risk?

Still, looks like bringing him in will lead to a tidy profit at the very least.

Totalfpl and CTC both think he may rise again tonight, which will be his third of the week - and there's still time for a possible fourth rise. Which I've never seen before and I think would represent a first.

When are these price-rises/fall anyway? Last seson it was every night, around 3-4-5 oclock.
Is it random this year, or is there some pattern?

I think they are still sorting this out, probably a result of cranking the system by hand. Most have been 7 or 8 in the morning, and have missed some days, but yesterday's was late afternoon.

Dzeko is the only penalty box striker of City's forwards. Tevez, Aguero and Balotelli can all play deeper and create goals so Dzeko could be first choice with Tevez and Aguero rotating. It all depends on form though.

If everyone's fit it could well be:

        Kenny
        Young, Gabbidon, Ferdinand, Traore
        Faurlin, Barton
        Smith Taarabt, Wright Philips
        Campbell

Might be Bothroyd instead of DJ depending on fitness and some think Derry will start instead of Faurlin. I think Barton is basically a direct replacement for Derry though, but we'll see.

I'd agree with most of that but think it will be Hall (for the 5 mins he's fit) over Gabbidon and Puncheon over Smith on the LW.

To me there are no 'starters' from amongst the Bosman free agents Flavio Briatore made us sign whilst pinching his penny's before selling us.

I somehow don't think Neil Warnock ever really wanted any of Gabbidon, Bothroyd or Dyer but having been told it was them or no one at all - and not knowing for sure our sale would go through - we took what we could get at the time. Hindsight being a wonderful thing I don't doubt he'd wished he'd waited a week now as we're stuck with them...

              Caps lock just jam?

I doubt they'll all be massive scores. You never get more than 2 or 3 drubbings a week. And even if you're convinced that'll happen all you need to do is make a couple of good transfers in over the next 2 weeks.
Surely you already have at least 2 or 3 players from that group of teams already? Somethings seriously wrong if you don't.

All that being said gw6 doesn't really warrant a wildcard unless your team is horrible. In which case gw5 is just as good.

Well, i never said all of them will be massive scores... jus that that weekend would yield more.. and if my wildcard is used that week i may as well get a more than decent return.. and also sort out my team better..

"I FEEL THAT WOULD BE ONE WEEKEND WHERE EVERYONE WOULD SCORE BIG"

                  ?

I'm not sure what you just said does anything to clarify your point. If you think its best to do it then, then by all means.

I stand by the fact that there's a lot more benefit to waiting til gw7 is all.

Kolo Toure, guaranteed to be 6m when introduced to the game? If he gets his place back off lescott, I can see more clean sheets for city and more reason to cling onto kompany despite this current shift to accommondating as many heavyweights as possible to the detrement of defence.

With smart substitutions and transfers each week, I think you can probably pick up the same returns with a couple of 4.0/4.5s and use the points elsewhere.
And they make a lot more difference to the attack imo.

You are wrong. City have had more clean sheets with Kompany & Lescott than with Kolo & Kompany.

I'm a fan of cheap defenders, and i think it's increasingly likely i will be dropping kompany from my team, just wanted some unbiased input.

i have another dilemma this week, see my new post, comments would be apreciated

Doosra you about? Got a question for you about everton, baines worth the gamble or not?
Set pieces fair enough but how often do everton get pens and free kicks he could benefit from? (I know that wad a question like how long is a piece of string) but do you look threatening when attacking for you to get into these positions?
    Also how is Cahill looking?

Drenthe won't be on free kicks, Baines will. A lot will depend on which side Drenth plays.... he's a southpaw, so will get in the way of Baines if he plays on the left side, but if he plays right side then he will allow space for right back(Coleman?).

In my opinion, Baines is and will continue to be Everton's number one attacking outlet on the left, and will take free kicks and penalties. So yes, he is worth it if you have the cash.

I doubt that. Maybe the odd 1 but Baines should take the majority.

Cahill may well get rotated this season, if Moyes persists with 4-2-3-1..... Not as good as pick as he was last season, I'd stay clear unless we get injuries to Saha and Anichebe and he gets played up front

From memory, when I had Baines, I remember him scoring a lot of goals. Nearly a goal every second games. Based on that, Everton were being rewarded approximately a penalty every 2 games?

Beckford might take some time to settle in?

thing that puts me off Maynard is that Bristol are not that great right?

Mackail Smith must be a good pick too and playing for a better club..

Are you actually asking us to put a bet on with your money. Sorry but if you dont know the situation well enough you really shouldnt be betting on it.

Or if you really want to bet, then choose a name of a hat.
