Steven Gerrard edges closer to a first-team return. Capello inisists Wayne Rooney will be fine. Rafael Van der Vaart is set for six weeks on the sidelines while Mikel Arteta’s departure has Jack Rodwell eyeing up a regular starting position. Carlos Tevez is looking forward to his return to the Man City starting XI and QPR’s new owner Tony Fernandez is -allegedly- lining up a loan move for none other than David Beckham. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

Jack Rodwell is looking to the positive side of Mikel Arteta’s Everton exit. The young midfielder struggled with injury last term but feels he is now 100% fit and is hoping to step up to the task of filling the gap left by the Spaniard’s last-minute deadline day departure:

Mikel is a great player…he will be sorely missed. But we’ve got a lot of young players who can fill in. I’m ready to step up and fill his boots, definitely.

What I’ve been missing in my career is 30 games back to back and getting a good run of form and confidence, so hopefully this season I can do that. I’m ready now. I feel fit, I feel sharp and focused. I believe this is the season for me.

Fabio Capello has moved to allay fears of an injury to Wayne Rooney. The Man United forward picked up the problem in England’s 3-0 win in Bulgaria and with Fantasy managers fretting over his availability, the Italian confirmed he expects his star man to be fit for the midweek game against Wales:

Rooney has a problem with his foot but I think he should be okay for Tuesday. It’s a different part of his foot. His big toe. It’s nothing, I think but we will have to wait for a minimum of 24 hours.

Steven Gerrard is nearing a return to first-team action. The Liverpool midfielder has been out since mid-March with a groin problem and has played just six times since Kenny Dalglish returned to the Anfield club, but reckons he could be ready for a mid-September showdown with Spurs in Gameweek 5:

‘I won’t be involved against Stoke next Saturday but my plan is to hopefully be involved in the game against Tottenham. It will be Kenny’s decision when I come back in.’

New QPR owner Tony Fernandes has wasted little time in bankrolling a number of signings since arriving at the club last month. Next up on his radar is none other than David Beckham. The LA Galaxy midfielder is out of contract in October and is allegedly considering a return to the Premier League- Fernandes is looking to boost the club’s profile and in that respect, Beckham would clearly fit the bill.

According to reports, Carlos Tevez is now content with his stay at Man City. The Argentine has been itching to leave the Etihad Stadium and has made no secret of his dislike of the area but seems to have been won round and is looking forward to turning out for Roberto Mancini’s side in the imminent future:

I think I’ll be playing again soon. I don’t think I’ll have lost my place because I’m captain and the symbol of a big club like City. I feel like everything is different to last year. Now I’m with my wife and daughters in England.’

Shane Long has been ruled out of the Republic of Ireland’s game against Russia on Tuesday with a calf problem. The West Brom forward has bagged two goals in his first three games and Roy Hodgson will be sweating over his fitness ahead of next weekend’s trip to Norwich, with Peter Odemwingie also sidelined with an ankle injury.

Rafael Van der Vaart’s hamstring problems continue to play up. The Dutchman limped off in Tottenham’s recent 5-1 home hammering by Man City and, according to the club’s official website, looks to be sidelined for six weeks. This could promote Emmanuel Adayor to penalties, boosting the Fantasy merits of the loan signing as Harry Redknapp’s side look to bounce back from two straight defeats.

Man...I don't want Dzeko this week because I don't think he's going to start but I think I'll probably have to bring him right back in after that, because the amount of people who will suddenly think he's been dropped and knee jerk him out will be hilarious.

Tevez can play "happy family" with his own family at present in England, and watch the MC matches via Sky Sports! 😀 Mancini is not unwise to bring another Argentina forward. Tevez was never selected to represent his country and that speaks of his starting 11 potential in the MC line-up.

What a load of moronic gibberish. For one thing, Tevez has 59 caps for the Argentina team. Secondly, he has been City's best attacking player over the past two seasons. He has built up far too much of a reputation there to be left to rot on the bench.

Surely what we're looking at is a rotation of Dzeko, Aguero and Tevez with the one who isn't in the starting line-up coming on as a sub more often than not.

Tevez was only not selected for Argentina because he is not actively playing football. I am not sure how he will play this year but imo Tevez > Aguero just for the fact that even if he has a bad day he will fight and give 100 % everytime.

Am almost (0.3) able to afford the WC team below... Hopefully will have it by next sat morning. Thoughts?

    Vorm
    Bos/enrique/kompany
    Mata/young/silva/arteta
    Suarez/dzeko/adebayor
    (rudd/simps/briggs/dyer)

My concern is lack of obvious capt material week in week out... Say what you want about lamps,RVP,Roonpig being expensive... But you would be happy with any of them having the (c) on pretty much any GW

    Team:

    Given (Vorm)

    Kompany - Enrique - Senderos - Simpson - Bosingwa

Young - Silva (Fox - Dyer - Ferguson)

    Rooney - Suarez - Dzeko

    3.5mil in bank

Made 2 subs this week already, Aguero > Dzeko and Hilario > Vorm before prce rise.

I'm very tempted to put arteta in for fox because:

    1. Senderos looks to be out of the team now
    2. Fox only played gameweek 1
    3 Dyer away at Arsenal

Is it worth another -4 to chance Arteta starting with a bang? Or do I have enough about my team to hold off?

Arteta isn't protected on TotalFPL and I can't get him if his price rises.

    Input greatly apreciated

Go for it, its early enough to absorb a points hit and Arteta has nice games coming up and a much better striker to provide service to now.

Personally im going in with heavy arsenal coverage... Its a gamble given thier form but their next 6 fixs are mouth wateringly good. Theo & RVP are both more essential than arteta imo though... But that could well come back to bite me.

RVP n theo would be nice, and if i was wildcarding i may just do that. the reality is that i've got many of the form players in my team at present and can't justify taking them out until their performance diminishes really.

dyer>mata/meirles next few weeks for me when i've had the opportunity to take money out of defence

if there's enough evidence i may even be wildcarding next week to get potential essential in before rises

lol, what people do and what they think is the interesting factor there. For example, everyone pick their own scout picks every week if you had unlimited wc

my team next week would be:

          Schwarzer (Vorm)

Simpson - Jagielka - Bosingwa (Delaet - Ward)

Silva - Nasri - Arteta - Wacott (Ferguson)

Can someone explain all the Arteta love?

Recently he has been a poor FPL player at Everton, where he was on Set pieces and penalties, now he is at a poor Arsenal where he wont be on penalties and doubtful he will be on many free kicks.

I don't buy it personally. I might be wrong, but I think he is a worse option at Arsenal.

Look at Nzogbia at Villa. He fits the criteria of what you just said and it has worked the comkplete opposite.

mcleish isn't allowing him the same role at villa like he had at wigan, his returns will improve once he get used to his new role.

although i agree with jamsiep, arteta a class above n'zog and with his increased influence in an attacking team with fixtures on his side to boot, cannot be ignored

more touches of the ball and mental boost from a move, keen to play in champions league, he was very loyal staying at everton all this time he's a class act.

if you don't agree fair do's

Probably a bad example, but you get my point.

Wigan to Villa is pretty much a similar step up from Everton to Arsenal. That was my thinking with the comparison, but aye probably not the best of examples.

Of course Arteta is a good player, but take away his free kicks and penalties and there really isn't that much going for him at a team like Arsenal where he will be far from the main focal point of the team.

That's just what I think though and I could be completely wrong. If I see it panning out any other way, I will be the next person to jump onthe bandwagon. 😀

              absolutely.

arteta's output will demand he's the furthest forward mid getting the key passes, so on that i agree with you. wenger does like him though, he's been after him for a while amid reports 2 years ago.

i remember being proper gutted that arteta couldn't play for england, arteta himself was disappointed also and his diminshed output stems from that point.

last year he needed the free kicks and penalties, i guess what i'm saying is i'm predicting a rise in form based on a significant mental boost!

              i'm clutching straws now lol

    Hi Guys,
    My team is

    Given Vorm
    Santon Brown Taylor(SWA) Woodgate Ward
    Young Nasri Silva Anderson Ferguson
    Rooney Suarez Dzeko

Would my team benefit from taking out Anderson and putting in Dyer in order to finance Santon and Brown to Smalling and Warnock.

Just to clarify I am happy to double up on Villa and think Smalling is safe for now and cant afford Bosingwa instead, o and either nasri or silva will be changed to mata when he starts starting games.

      what did atilla say?

newcastle look primed for good defensive returns this year with the look about their midfield and defence.

having struggled for goals since carroll left they've clearly been adhering to the strategy 'don't concede first, nick a goal later'

cheers guys. hey green! yeah petrov was on fire a couple season's back, poor last. looks like he's on form again. bit worried that jarvis has taken ohara's thunder this year.

attila wrote a nice blog recently evil - afraid i don't have the link. appears to be his fav newcastle prospect this year though...

might chuck petrov in now then, screw the fixtures - at least that gives me an extra .5 to play with. sweet

aye, was a sore one to take but it bodes well for the future. to be honest you could see there was some improvement during the 1-0 loss to ireland in that mickey mouse tournament. a win against denmark and almost a win against them yesterday seems to be a step in the right direction. 2 wins in the next 2 and hope of lithuania beating the czechs would help. Lithuania still think they have an outside chance so will give it their all against them so fingers crossed.

Cabaye is on Corners and if taylor is dropped he will be on all free kicks as well. The penalties depends on if Shola is playing, if he is then no one else will be able to take them. If Best and Ba keep him out, then it's a tossup between Cab and Ba.

More than that though, if you look at the mids that Newcastle are likely to field, then Cabaye is by far the most threatening. Tiote will stay back, Gutierrez works hard, but he is usually never the one to make the killer pass or pull the trigger himself, Obertan/Marveux are unproven and not nailed on starts, Vuckic broke his hand, Ferguson will likely cover left back.

Ben Arfa may be the better choice when he comes back, because they will likely play him as a second striker behind Best/Ba/Shola. It will literally be like having a 5.5mil striker in your mid. Until that happens though, Cabaye is a pretty safe bet.

jarvis scored 133 last year, do people think he's going to exceed that this year? more specifically, if he DOES exceed 133, will the returns be worth the extra 1.0 points?

also, will he outscore anderson (assuming he starts) in a very attacking united team, or brunt in a wba with great fixtures over the next 5 or so weeks?

i think that my mini-leagues will hinge on the cheaper players, and i currently have anderson, petrov and dyer in my wc team (ando + petrov mainly in the hopes of price rises) but after i downgrade ashley young to walcott, i'll also have 1.3 points in the bank.

i was worried end of last year when teams started finding jarvis out going two on him after his england debut, n Mick dropped him. Wolves form seems unsustainable also, I'd consider a defender because of johnson but that's it.

if you want a cheap striker then fletcher is a good choice

i can see hunt outscoring jarvis and o'hara this year

my frontline is the classic rooney/suarez/dzeko, which i'm not rushing to change. i think that holding onto dzeko whilst he's got form will reap obvious points, but also team value, the same with suarez. rooney will be in my team all season.

in all honesty i know very little about wolves, i'm in nz so haven't seen them play very often, but looking at hunt's ff stats so far he's done nothing fantasy-wise in an on-form wolves team - nathan dyer at 4.5 has a point more, in a swansea team that can't score goals.

yeah not too stressed about dyer, i'm happy enough if he plays every game and gets an occasional assist - ideally he'll never see the starting lineup.

if we say hunt is the main man from wolves, then what are your thoughts on comparably priced players; anderson, brunt etc?

personally i'm not looking at mid priced midfielders until someone exibits some form with good fixtures in tandem, it really is too early to say who is going to work out in that bracket

atm wolves are playing well, so a wolves player aint a bad option
