Steven Gerrard edges closer to a first-team return. Capello inisists Wayne Rooney will be fine. Rafael Van der Vaart is set for six weeks on the sidelines while Mikel Arteta’s departure has Jack Rodwell eyeing up a regular starting position. Carlos Tevez is looking forward to his return to the Man City starting XI and QPR’s new owner Tony Fernandez is -allegedly- lining up a loan move for none other than David Beckham. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

Jack Rodwell is looking to the positive side of Mikel Arteta’s Everton exit. The young midfielder struggled with injury last term but feels he is now 100% fit and is hoping to step up to the task of filling the gap left by the Spaniard’s last-minute deadline day departure:

Mikel is a great player…he will be sorely missed. But we’ve got a lot of young players who can fill in. I’m ready to step up and fill his boots, definitely.

What I’ve been missing in my career is 30 games back to back and getting a good run of form and confidence, so hopefully this season I can do that. I’m ready now. I feel fit, I feel sharp and focused. I believe this is the season for me.

Fabio Capello has moved to allay fears of an injury to Wayne Rooney. The Man United forward picked up the problem in England’s 3-0 win in Bulgaria and with Fantasy managers fretting over his availability, the Italian confirmed he expects his star man to be fit for the midweek game against Wales:

Rooney has a problem with his foot but I think he should be okay for Tuesday. It’s a different part of his foot. His big toe. It’s nothing, I think but we will have to wait for a minimum of 24 hours.

Steven Gerrard is nearing a return to first-team action. The Liverpool midfielder has been out since mid-March with a groin problem and has played just six times since Kenny Dalglish returned to the Anfield club, but reckons he could be ready for a mid-September showdown with Spurs in Gameweek 5:

‘I won’t be involved against Stoke next Saturday but my plan is to hopefully be involved in the game against Tottenham. It will be Kenny’s decision when I come back in.’

New QPR owner Tony Fernandes has wasted little time in bankrolling a number of signings since arriving at the club last month. Next up on his radar is none other than David Beckham. The LA Galaxy midfielder is out of contract in October and is allegedly considering a return to the Premier League- Fernandes is looking to boost the club’s profile and in that respect, Beckham would clearly fit the bill.

According to reports, Carlos Tevez is now content with his stay at Man City. The Argentine has been itching to leave the Etihad Stadium and has made no secret of his dislike of the area but seems to have been won round and is looking forward to turning out for Roberto Mancini’s side in the imminent future:

I think I’ll be playing again soon. I don’t think I’ll have lost my place because I’m captain and the symbol of a big club like City. I feel like everything is different to last year. Now I’m with my wife and daughters in England.’

Shane Long has been ruled out of the Republic of Ireland’s game against Russia on Tuesday with a calf problem. The West Brom forward has bagged two goals in his first three games and Roy Hodgson will be sweating over his fitness ahead of next weekend’s trip to Norwich, with Peter Odemwingie also sidelined with an ankle injury.

Rafael Van der Vaart’s hamstring problems continue to play up. The Dutchman limped off in Tottenham’s recent 5-1 home hammering by Man City and, according to the club’s official website, looks to be sidelined for six weeks. This could promote Emmanuel Adayor to penalties, boosting the Fantasy merits of the loan signing as Harry Redknapp’s side look to bounce back from two straight defeats.

Anyone else not got or not having Rooney?

It's probably gonna cost me in the end, but I find it utterly boring having the same players as just about everyone.

Plus it's mildly entertaining watching the live updates sweating that every goal flash isn't Rooney. 😀

Aye, you're not wrong there. If I was playing in a cash league I would make sure to have him, but I'm not, so I try to strike a fine balance between having fun and doing well. It just takes all the fun out of it when everyone has the same player. Makes it meaningless when you see them score on the weekend.

          You need Rooney.
I think he's going to be "Ronaldo-esque" this season and be a safe bet for captain regardless of Man United's opponent, especially at home.

I don't have him, and it's a strategic move (or maybe strategic fail, but I'm pretty confident). I think too many people have jumped on the bandwagon. At united he drops deeper to link play when hernandez is in the team. 3 goals against arsenal, all 3 from dead ball situations.

Not saying he wouldn't be a good buy given how many chances united are creating, and if you have the money, get him. But if it's going to be one 12 mill striker, I'm going for RvP (c). Hoping the game reverts to fixtures over form.

Nah, would much rather have RVP. And the way I see it, everytime Rooney scores a freekick Young will get an assist. (probably true with pens too). So Young will be almost as useful, and takes a big mid spot rather than a striker spot.

Baines and Bos can play every week so you could just go for two more cheapies to rotate, if you have other areas where the money would benefit. If not I'd probably say Kompany and De Laet and just play the big three pretty much every week. B looks good but there'd probably be some tough choices of who to bench.

Looking at your team and seeing that Dyer may be fielded quite regularly, it might be worth upgrading him. However, to raise the money I'd be more inclined to downgrade Bent or someone else other than Rooney, at least until Chica shows some form.

    Given, Vorm
Bosingwa, Kompany, Hughes, Simpson, De Laet

    Hi all,

Question for WCers. How much is your team value up to and will you be making the most of this value by selling the players that have rose?

Im up to 101.6m but will prob be keeping most of my players.

I am at 101.1 and have made 0.3 from price rises. I think its funny that some of the double risers will drop in price on the last day, as a fair ammount of us sell them for the profit.

I don't believe there will be that big price drops as most people will just look at form and I doubt that many people are playing the day-to-day price rise game.

That being said I'm on 101.7 with 3 awful rounds behind me and a lot of hopes resting on a swift WC recovery.

Sorry this may be off topic guys but how do I delete my premierleague fantasy football acount? When I registered for the new season I did so with a new email address. Now I can't enter my mini-leagues with my original account. I've emailed premierleague numerous times but nobody answers. Please help! ðŸ™

hmmm Oz junior has also requested to join a league I'm in, and has been on the will be added next time list for a couple of time. I suspect it's another bug in the new system and will be cleared eventually. I think you have to hang on.

I have been persuaded that Dempsey is not the best option - try to get Walcott ... or Barry.

Dzeko and Suarez both represent such good value (assuming they keep their places - which I think they will) that it's hard to entertain the idea of leaving one of them out for a 12m striker.

Would love to get both Rooney and RVP but it has to be one or the other imo. The alternative is that you have to significantly downgrade a midfielder while only slightly upgrading a striker.

Can't see the value in it personally, as much as it pains me to go without RVP.

I have both. Undecided on which of Suarez and Dzeko to go without right now but I think the extra couple of mil goes further up front than it does in midfield.

        How so, out of interest?

For example if i wanted to upgrade Suarez to RVP (the cheaper of the two), i'd have to lose an extra 2.3m. Thats giving you a Taarabt/Sessegnon over Walcott/Nasri/Silva.

And the gap in quality between any of them is much bigger than the gap between Suarez and RVP, surely? Not to mention that on current showing Arsenal look shocking compared to City or Liverpool, fixtures aside.

Flawed logic, Sess -> Walcott is 3.5 mill, not 2.3mill.

for an extra 2.3 you could only do See -> Dempsey/Yaya, thats not a big step up.

            9-6.5 (i.e. Walcott to Sessegnon) = 2.5 saved, not 3.5

i.e. enough to pay for the 2.3m upgrade from Suarez to RVP - but that isn't what I was saying.

The point isn't that you're upgrading Sessegnon, it's that if you want to upgrade Suarez to RVP you need to free up 2.3m. So if, for example, I were to downgrade Walcott (to free up the funds) I'd now have 9 - 2.3 = 6.7 to spend on a player. For that kind of price you are looking are a player such as Sessegnon or Taarabt. So that is the cost in real terms of upgrading Suarez to RVP, having one of those instead of Walcott (or Nasri or Silva with around 7.2 to spend on a replacement).

Well done in missing the point entirely.

I think the difference between Suarez and RVP will be bigger than the difference between most 8.5 mids and 6.0 ones. There's not much choice in midfield in that area and as far as 9+ go if I have Silva then that narrows it down further.

And whilst there is a temptation to be greedy and want absolutely everyone who looks like they may score big, one can't have everyone. if RVP started to go mad, I'd re-evaluate, but for now I'm happy with my strikers. IO guess one has to think of who one has and not obsess over who one doesn't have. Otherwise one would never be satisfied, even when doing well.

Why all the hype about Barkley - has there be any indication he will get regular gametime? Even when he has played, he's looked decent but hardly set the ff world alight.

Think Moses is a better shout tbh, as unfashionable as that may be.

Agreed. I can't see Moyes starting him regularly either.

He was pretty cautious with the likes of Rodwell and Rooney to begin with. I'd be surprised if he used Barkely excessively so soon in his career.

I know Arteta has left, but I wouldn't describe Everton as short on midfielders.

True enough, but its not like Barkley will offer steady returns when he does play either - the difference is that at least you can bank on Moses to play.

Barkley has got 2 and 1 so far...

But his potential means people are likely to gamble on him scoring or doing something special. He was getting built up as the next Rooney, so there must be something about him. With Moses you know what to expect and at 5m it's not exactly a massive gamble. Moyes said Barkley was their best player in their 1st game, but he's young so will be inconsistent.

These parts. As a fantasy football player, as an actual player he is class. But people saying he is a must have is a bit too much. He only scored 5 goals in over 1000 minutes last season. Kenny has also built the team around Carroll, Suarez drifts deep and wide.

Toure is a bad pick, 8.0M for a defensive mid. Szczesny is too expensive for an arsenal defender/keeper, at least mertersacker offers goal threat. Dyer is a way better pick than tiote, all tiote will do is get cards, not goals or assists! Oh, and who is martin?

      Very similar to mine.

I have Ruddy instead of Vorm (he's out one week, and rotates so much better with Given, who you'll be playing most weeks anyway)

I have Brown instead of De Laet, as he rotates perfectly with Simpson.

If you can afford Young, I'd have him over Adam. I know it's nice to spread the coverage, but with Gerrard back, Adam might be pushed back even more, and Young is looking so deadly at the moment
