Branislav Ivanovic refined his breathless brand of two-way full-back play to a fine art this season, posting his greatest haul of attacking returns while ensuring that solid defensive principles weren’t neglected in the process. The ever-consistent Serb was subsequently named in the PFA Team of the Year for his efforts and deservedly earns a spot in our own interpretation.

The Statistics

Ivanovic swiftly established himself as the prime defensive pick in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), notching two goals, an assist, five bonus points and a clean sheet during Chelsea’s opening three fixtures.

Having started at 7.0, the Serbian international then hovered around the 7.2 mark for the first half of the campaign, before a hugely profitable seven-match stretch – which harvested two goals and three assists – attracted a surge of investors and triggered a price rise to 7.6. By virtue of the Blues’ eight clean sheet in their final 18 matches, Ivanovic remained a popular pick till the last and ended the season with a 30% ownership.

Ivanovic is famed for his rampaging runs down the flank and penchant for scoring in bursts – traits that are reflected in his underlying statistics. The former Lokomotiv Moscow defender headed up the defender leaderboards with regards to goal attempts (44), shots inside the box (30) and shots on target (11). Furthermore, Ivanovic was a creative powerhouse, ranking third in terms of key passes (36) and first for successful passes in the opponents’ final third (378). Only Leighton Baines (11 – two goals, nine assists) contributed to more goals than the title-winning full-back (10 – four goals, six assists) over the course of the season.

With a total score of 179 points, Ivanovic topped the FPL defender rankings and placed sixth in the overall standings. Eden Hazard, with his unrivalled 233-point haul, was the only player on Chelsea’s roster to boast a superior tally. In spite of these attacking exploits, Ivanovic was awarded just 13 bonus points in 38 appearances, trailing John Terry (14) and Cesar Azpilicueta (19) in that respect.

The Prospects

Chelsea were the standout defensive team of the 2014/15 league season, recording more clean sheets (17) than any other outfit. Moreover, the London club conceded the fewest goals (32), big chances (35) and shots inside the box (208) – a feat surely aided by the excellent shielding qualities of enforcer Nemanja Matic. As such, one Chelsea defender is likely to be a staple among the starting squads in next season’s FPL, with Ivanovic and Terry tussling for the same berth.

Despite starting last term at a higher price than Terry (7.0 to 6.5), Ivanovic was the premier choice for much of the campaign, yet the latter’s late flourish (two goals in the last five Gameweeks) greatly strengthened the Blues captain’s case for inclusion.

Given that the pair were two of only four outfield players to manage every minute last term, their consistency of minutes under Jose Mourinho is clearly crucial to how we view their prospects. It remains to be seen whether Terry’s ageing limbs will be able to handle another full season without a rest, though, and Ivanovic, for many, remains the prime pick amongst the Blues’ rearguard.

A price hike to 7.5 isn’t out of the question, though irrespective of any cost adjustments, Ivanovic is sure to enjoy a high ownership due to his favourable returns per unit of investment. Aside from Harry Kane – who’s a special case due to his unforeseen emergence – Ivanovic is by far the cheapest among the top six highest-scoring players of the concluded season. Considering only three midfielders and two forwards managed to better his overall score, then, he makes a strong claim for investing.

Key to his appeal is the Serbian’s consistency. Ivanovic’s penchant for picking up points at both ends of the pitch meant that he produced either attacking or defensive returns in 24 of his 38 appearances, and he only seems to be improving with age. Having carded his best points tally (beating the previous season’s 159) and attacking output (surpassing his four goals and five assists in the 2010/11 campaign), Ivanovic seems to be enjoying a greater freedom to bomb forward and his raids down the right will surely be pivotal to Chelsea’s title tilt once again.

WC's should be played somewhere where both the fans and the players want it to be played. Australia would be a good choice for sure.

All this "spreading the word of football" nonsense is just a load of old bull to justify why tournaments are being played in corrupt countries through a corrupt process.

Sepp Blatter has done nothing to stop the corruption despite all this promises. I can't believe that a FIFA director said the arrests are good for FIFA, they are massively in denial. Are we to believe that the 2018 and 2022 WC's had no involvement of corruption, if anything it was FIFA's crowning achievement in terms of corruption. Perhaps the next WC will be played in Iceland.

Well at the start of the season you only have fixtures - friendlies i fairly meaningless.

Form soon takes hold though so i would say form

Attackers are more form based whilst defenders fixtures i would say.

Bit of both, some players in great form perform irregardless (and sometimes better) with worse fixtures, e.g. Chelsea defenders. Some players in poor form are able to turn that around with good fixtures

    4.
      • 12 Years
      10 years, 6 months ago

both, I'd take a 60/40 split on fixtures over form though.

Fixtures at the start, but making sure you are flexible to form. Try to craft your team so that you only need to use 1FT to bring in the attacking bandwagons.

my captain score was 476 and I ended up 12K

My wifes captain score (it really is her team) was 492 and she ended up 583

I agree that it doesn't dictate where you finish but if I had scored the same as Dufflinks with my capt. i would have been about top 3-4K i reckon and my wife top 100 so it does make a big difference where you end up...

Not sure about top 10 twice in a row - that would be extremlely difficult.

I think someone was saying they had 2 x top 100 finishes in a row and SuperDunny may have done top 200.

Otherwise top 500 and top 1000 a couple of times in a row is decent enough 🙂

I've only just finished in top 10k for first time!

It'll be too expensive though. PvA at 4.5 would be a steal but could well be 5, Jaanmat likely to be 5.5

Foster and Myhill will probably both be 4.5, Kolarov 6 probably, Janmaat likely 5.5, PvA 4.5 or 5, Dawson 5. That's pretty heavy

Could well be, but they should both be similar priced, e.g. Myhill shouldn't be 4.0 and Foster 5 since Myhil will obviously start until Foster returns, so 4 would be too cheap

            1. Christina.
              • 15 Years
              10 years, 6 months ago

No keepers have ever been 4m at the start. The promoted sides will have 4.5m keepers, I can therefore not see a WBA keeper being 5m with their record/Pulis. Similar to SWA this year I think.

Myhil at 4.5m will be a steal until Foster is back.

Krul, Foster, Mannone, Guzan all started at 4.5 from non promoted sides.

But yes wouldn't be surprised to see Myhill at 4.5 and Foster at 5

Correct. I'm saying no keeper will be 4m. Those are all the sides that struggled to survive.

FPL won't be stupid and will obv be aware of the Foster injury whn it comes to pricing. I can see Panty's price giving us a kick in the balls as well.

                    Yeah they never are 4m.

Yeah of course, Myhill could still be a decent option depending on Foster's injury.

Panti at 5.0? Of course he is great for saves and the odd CS but can't see if myself, they just scraped survival this term

Prices, fixtures & signings are essential here. But this is the kind of thing I may have:

      Hazard[11.5] - 9.0 - 7.0 - 6.0 - 4.5

      Warner has just said:

'The actions of Fifa no longer concern me. I cannot help but note, however, that these cross-border coordinated actions come at a time when Fifa is assembled for elections to select a president who is universally disliked by the international community.

At times such as this it is my experience that the large world powers typically take actions to affect world football. World football is an enormous international business.'

Hopefully a sign that there'll be some fairly serious mud slinging amongst the accused and soon to be accused.....

I wonder where Simon March will finish next season.

Seen a lot of repeating patterns on here with people finding it very difficult to have two really good seasons back to back.

Just read a comment above about someone finish in the top 100 back to back seasons but that seems to be an anomaly.

The element of luck in the game is extremely high, otherwise past winners would be consistently finishing with very high ranks

I have not done proper research into this, only going by own experience and other ranks I have seen around the place.

Is there anything we can learn from Simon March or was it simply he had more luck than everyone else?

Thisnyear is an exception as you didnt have to take any major risks to have a good rank. I rekcon simon will do well

Last yeat however you needed quite a few gambles to go your way and winner probably did take a hell lot. That sort of style usually gets you either a very good or very poor rank.another reason why those linger around the 1k mark every season fenerally do well but not enough to win it, unless a season such as this ine shows up

To be honest, as many have mentioned, it would be hard to keep motivated knowing that you've already won it.

FPL is always about a bit of luck as you said, I think he consistently made the right calls and got some 50/50 decisions right which is the key to any good season really. Not taking hits is a very questionable tactic imo, but it worked for him.

      1. djenzio
        • 11 Years
        10 years, 6 months ago

yeah the 'no hits' is interesting.

I know the game is relatively new, but it's interesting how no one has ever won it twice. That's what makes the game so good, is that every season is new. And everyone has an equal chance to do well. I wonder if lots of people will adopt this no hits game next season and if it will improve their rank or not.

Does anyone know if there has been an instant of a past winner even challenging for a second win?

I doubt it mate. As mentioned before there are only murmurs about someone getting top 200 twice in a row, let alone winning and then challenging again.

So many variables, factors and luck that it would be quite rare if it happened

            SuperDunny came 175th in 2011-12 and 80th in 2012-13.

Julian Hancock finished 96th in 2008-09 and 19th in 2009-10.

            Ulrik Nyland was 141st in 2006-7, 99th in 2007-8 and 158th in 2012-13.

Obviously there is a big element of luck, but there are people who consistently finish in the top 5-10k. Barring last season, Mark has a phenomenal history, as do Jonty, Evs etc. There's certainly a lot of skill to finish in that bracket year after year, but to make that step up from, say, top 100-500 to actually winning the thing requires pretty much everything to go your way.

Yeah good point at the end mate. There is actually a huge difference between the top 100/500 to the top 20 say. And yes a lot has to go your way just to get up around there, look at Mark for example

      2. djenzio
        • 11 Years

do you think that in order to go for the win you have to be more risky and take more chances, therefore you increase the odds of having a terrible rank.

but then it's easier in a way to aim for say a top 5/10k finish year in year out.

        1. Doolittle
          • 13 Years

As Nate said above, Simon hasn't actually taken any major risks, but that's probably because he's been consolidating top spot for most of the season. He's just seen things before others, perhaps because of extensively using stats, and got the 50/50 calls right.

There can be a slight gamble like getting on Kane early, or captaining, say, Sanchez one week over Aguero, but I wouldn't say you need any ridiculous risks. That is, unless, you are in the top 10-20 towards the end and need something special to catch the number 1.

    Any fellow Londoners on here?

Looking at moving and Muswell Hill has a few really nice, relatively affordable properties, but despite living in North London I've never actually been. I have it in my head that it's really good, but that may be just because of associations with The Kinks. Anyone know the area?

I was going to go visit that area because I am a massive Kinks fan but never got around to going. I was only over for a short while.

Same, I'd just be playing Muswell Hillbillies constantly. I have heard/read people say it's good, but just never got around to going. It would also mean increased travel fees as it's zone 4, and it's a fair bit more than we're paying at the moment.

yeah the reason I didn't go out there was because it was so far away, was staying in central london and not sure my girlfriend would have appreciated being dragged out all the way for me to say a town where a band I love used to live!

the recording studio they built is still there and it had been up for sale for years but i think ray davies has taken it off the market again.

could be worth taking a trip out there and checking it out. and make sure you bring a copy of Muswell Hillbillies to play on repeat while you walk around!

Flats aren't actually that hard to come by in London, its more the type of flat you're going for is in high demand. A well priced flat in the nicest area in all of London might go pretty quickly.
Why do you want to stay north? Battersea and Clapham is full of flats, as is Shepherds Bush, but it would be hard to go from the serene surroundings of the north to the Aussie ruled areas.

We were going to move to Clapham a while ago, but after visiting the area quite a bit it started to grate on me - there's only a certain number of recent Durham graduates wearing vests, rugby headbands, luminous facepaint and shouting "Lads! Lads!" that I can take.

I do prefer North London, looking at Kentish Town as well as it's where Lily works. Clapham/Battersea to Kentish Town would be pretty lengthy.

first time I have seen continual improvement, that's the point I was making above.

is there a way to play the game that you keep getting better? and then can you maintain those high ranks.... it's very interesting as you have proved that is possible

have you played the same way every year? or what have you done differently to continue to improve your rank?

Can't say for sure but a couple of things I can think of that I've done differently are I didn't concern myself with price changes at all, made most transfers the night before or morning of the deadline and mainly just followed my instincts when I had a gut feeling about a player. And whenever I was stumped I came here 🙂

Great stuff mate - congrats! I wanted to get Walcott but already had 3 Arsenal, had decided to take Hazard out and didn't fancy taking a hit in the last gameweek. Went for Mirallas instead. Could have been worse - could have gone for Fellaini, which crossed my mind!

Cheers! I had 2 Arsenal and didn't know what to do with my 2FT. Then I saw Walcott in the scout picks and thought "worth a shot" and ditched Sanchez for him. so lucky! And yeah, good thing you avoided Fellaini!

Some surprising facts from my FPL Stastico season analysis:

    - The only team I didn't own a player from all season was Palace
    - I only captained Kane once (for his DGW haul)
    - 433 was my most profitable formation (used twice, 78.5 points average)
    - 260 total immediate points gained from transfers

Anyone else got any 'interesting' analysis to share (other than the usual captain/VC analysis)

so, Wenger says he plans to use Theo more as central striker next season

Problem is he'll still be competing with Giroud and Welbz for that spot. Pity. a nailed-on OOP Theo would be incredible

      that is a pity.

kinda means Theo and Giroud might not be pickable then

I think Welbz would be 3rd choice from them two.

does that mean he won't be a signing a new striker?

Welbeck is a scorer of a great goals, not a great goalscorer. What he does have is pace and power to run at, in behind, defences.

I still haven't gotten over the time he did that v Neuer

He was even briefed before hand that if he found himself in that situation he needed to drill it low into corner as he'd never it over him

                  still did it though

At the end of last season, I found that you could have won FPL with a dead team. Providing you picked an optimal starting XV, with a big scoring captain, and a lot of well timed auto-subs, you could have left your team alone all year, and wound up with more points than the eventual winner.

I've not quite managed it this time out, but I've got fairly close with this first attempt:

      Fabianski
      Ivanovic - Clyne - Bertrand
      Hazard - Sanchez - Silva - Sigurdsson
      Aguero (C) - Kane (V) - Austin

      Heaton - Downing - O'Shea - Hutton

The above team would have cost 100m exactly at the start of the season, and earned 2406 points - enough to seal 13th place overall.

The key is in the auto-subs - Heaton saved a penalty in a 15 pointer against Southampton in the week Fabianski (the highest scoring keeper this season) was out with suspension. Kane was the highest scoring player in the weeks that Aguero was out, and their combined captaincy score would have given you more points than leaving the armband on Hazard al season. Downing had an excellent first half of the season, and would have picked up plenty of points off the bench when the other attacking players missed out.

I'm not going to devote any more time than the hour or so of tinkering and calculating I've just spent, but if anyone can find a dead team that would have won FPL, then I'll take my hat off to you!

This is the closest I can get (4th):

        Fabianski 151 (missing GW16);
        Ivanovic 179 (missing GW27)
        Clyne 142 (missing GW19-20,32)
        Bertrand 140 (missing GW19,24-26);
        Hazard 233 (missing GW27)
        Sanchez 207 (missing GW5,23-24,33)
        Silva 191 (missing GW10-15)
        Sigurdsson 154 (missing GW17,23-25,27,38);
        Aguero (C) 216*2 (missing GW16-20)
        Kane (V) 191 (missing GW3,5-6,8,27) +48 (GW16-20)
        Austin 176 (missing GW2,16,25,27,33);

        Heaton 15 (GW16)
        Downing 93 (GW2-3,5-6,8,10-11,13-20,23-25,27,33,38)-
        Yoshida 48 (GW5,17,19-20,23-27,32-33)
        Lescott 30 (GW12,16,19,24-25,27,33)

        Total score: 2432 (4th).
        Cost: 100.0m

The only differences from your squad are Yoshida and Lescott instead of O'Shea and Hutton on the bench (I made the cost of your squad to be only 99.0m).

A slightly improved optimum affordable dead team squad:

          Heaton 150 (missing none)
          Ivanovic 179 (missing GW27)
          Terry 177 (missing GW27)
          Bertrand 140 (missing GW19,24-26);
          Hazard 233 (missing GW27)
          Sanchez 207 (missing GW5,23-24,33)
          Silva 191 (missing GW10-15)
          Sigurdsson 154 (missing GW17,23-25,27,38);
          Aguero(C) 216*2 (missing GW16-20)
          Kane(V) 191 (missing GW3,5-6,8,27) + 48 (GW16-20)
          Austin 176 (missing GW2,16,25,27,33)

          Any 4.0 goalkeeper
          Downing 93 (GW2-3,5-6,8,10-11,13-20,23-25,27,33,38)
          Yoshida 47 (GW5,17,19,23-27,32-33)
          Bellerin 16 (GW16,24-25,27)

          Total score: 2435 (4th).

There was an error in my previous version, since Lescott would not have been autosubbed in GW33, so he would only have contributed 24 points and the total score would only have been 2426.
In my new improved version, Clyne, Lescott & Fabianski have been replaced by Terry, Bellerin & a 4.0 goalkeeper..

Ludo, this is hopefully my final attempt at the optimal affordable dead team squad:

Compared with my most recent previous attempt, promoting Bellerin above Yoshida on the subs bench gives:
        Bellerin 34 (GW16, 23-25, 27, 32)
        Yoshida 38 (GW5,17,19, 24-27, 33)
        Total score 2444 (3rd)

These were the best value (Points per million) mids in order in the Sky game last season:

      Hazard, Eden
      Mane, Sadio
      Mahrez, Riyad
      Sung-Yueng, Ki
      Silva, David
      Downing, Stewart
      Mason, Ryan
      Colback, Jack
      Fer, Leroy
      Henderson, Jordan

      Cheap mids ftw!

Surprised to see Mason in there - must have picked up a lot of bonus points. Where did you finish in Sky in the end?

Mason was 3.8 - cheapest price for a mid so that's why mainly.

Well played sir, and thanks again for the weekly articles - this was my first full season, so found them invaluable. Finished in top 150 after a late surge. Saved a few transfers to spend on Arsenal players in last few weeks (not Walcott or any defs though unfortunately!)so could have worked out even better if they had kept up their scoring rate

Defiantly want to pick up Mane next year. Lots of MOTM awards I reckon.

Agreed, I think if it wasn't for the African nations, he could have ended up one of the highest scoring mids.

He seemed to be picking up form just as he left..

I'd presume, as it's a global forum, Man Utd or Liverpool. Probably Man Utd considering the likely age demographic.

An assumption as Man Utd and Liverpool are the most widely supported clubs. I know there are a few of us Everton fans on here, but it's going to be Man Utd or Liverpool (maybe Chelsea).

Midfielder Christian Atsu has arrived at Bournemouth to discuss a season-long loan move from Chelsea.

      Good Prospect?

Potentially. Decent signing for Bournemouth, as he's a high profile player, and would show the likes of Mourinho have trust in Howe. They're also a very attacking side. I've not seen much end product in the very little I've seen of him though - seems to be very quick but lacking the ability to turn that into goals/assists. I'd much rather Ritchie unless he showed serious form.

He was very disappointing for us this season, no end product, a lot of headless chicken runs before losing the ball. Then again, we were terrible as a whole this year.

I know it's early but predicting transfers is always fun!

Will Arsenal buy a new striker? Would J.Martinez be any good for us? Benzema surely would but will stay in Madrid, I guess.
Does anyone believe the Vidal rumours or is Schneiderlin still on?

      1. JÆKS â

They most definitely should buy a new striker. Giroud is a good back-up but they won't win the league with him up front. Lacazette could also be quite a nice option but Liverpool is negociating with him I think? Or maybe Falcao since he wanted to stay in the premier league?

Everyone's very excited about the Jackson Martinez thing but I wouldn't be convinced if I were an Arsenal fan. He'll be 29 early next season, he has 3 good seasons in the Portuguese league, I just wouldn't be that wild about it. Benzema would be far better if possible.
