Back after a one-week hiatus due to the international break, we renew our acquaintance with the Premier League fixture list and attempt to slice out the juicy fruit from the bruised flesh. In other words, here’s our weekly rundown of those with favourable fixtures and ripe for investment.

The Highs

Arsenal
An upcoming run of promising-looking showdowns could not have come at a better time. Arsene Wenger has made some significant moves in the transfer market and, with Gervinho and Alex Song returning from suspension after this weekend, there is a potential new start looming for the Gunners following their Old Trafford drubbing.

On paper, no other side can compete with the attacking potential on offer over the next six Gameweeks – a run that has Arsenal facing Swansea, Bolton, Sunderland and Stoke all at home, will surely provide handsome returns if they can find a semblance of form. Even trips to Blackburn and local rivals Spurs offer the opportunity for goals.

The Arsenal defence will enjoy a facelift over the coming weeks with the arrival of Andre Santos and, in particular, Per Mertesacker. They could be in line for immediate starts with Arsenal facing up against opposition which appear to give them the perfect platform to start building a clean sheet tally.

West Brom
The Baggies face three away trips in the next four but they are all against teams which should give Roy Hodgson’s side opportunities for goals and results. Trips to Norwich, Swansea and Sunderland should bear some fruit, while a home clash with Fulham in Gameweek six will also be approached with confidence. The fitness of both Shane Lone and Peter Odemwingie is crucial, however – both are currently going into this weekend as injury doubts.

Defensively the Baggies are never a team to tempt investment but, over the next set of Gameweeks, their opportunity for returns at the back looks very strong – easily the healthiest within the low-to-mid price bracket, making Jonas Olsson a potential transfer target.

Wolves
Mick McCarthy’s side have confidence flowing through the camp and a short-term fixture list to keep the engine running. Three Molineux matches in the next four offer the opportunity for the likes of Matt Jarvis, Kevin Doyle and Steven Fletcher to continue their form, while Jamie O’Hara and Stephen Hunt will be looking to come out of their shell with some first returns of the season.

With encouraging defensive displays already in the back and with McCarthy demonstrating a desire to keep clean sheets with his tactical switch at Villa Park, there appears to be continued potential from the likes of Roger Johnson in the coming weeks.

Also consider…
Newcastle – rock solid in defence so far, the fixture list continues to deliver opponents that could keep the returns coming for the likes of Steven Taylor and Danny Simpson.

Chelsea – three away trips in four, including a stint at Old Trafford, is perhaps a challenging task but Andre Villas-Boas’ side are facing defences which should offer them opportunities with a strong goal return on the cards if Juan Mata can settle.

Fulham – like their West London neighbours, Fulham have fixtures which should give them plenty of scope for boosting the “goals for†column. Home clashes with Blackburn this weekend, together with Craven Cottage meetings with QPR and Everton look particularly favourable.

The Lows

Man United
Don’t get us wrong, United are flying and, in attacking terms, remaining a massive Fantasy force. The main concern is undoubtedly in defensive quarters. While Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans and Phil Jones are performing superbly, the fixture list continues to deliver them opponents with a significant goal threat. The Old Trafford clash with Norwich in Gameweek 8 may well be the only United cleanie in the coming weeks.

That will, of course, mean Alex Ferguson’s side will be forced to kill games off with their considerable firepower – Wayne Rooney and company won’t have it all their own way against Chelsea, Liverpool and City over the next six but it will be brave Fantasy manager to turn their back on the on-fire striker.

Everton
Two attractive home fixtures in the next two Gameweeks will ease Everton into the post-Arteta era but, following that, things become decidedly sticky for the Toffees. Games against City, Liverpool, Chelsea and United all lie in wait from Gameweeks 6-10, posing potential problems at both ends of the field. If Leighton Baines’ hamstring keeps him out of the next two, it’s doubtful that he’ll find his way into many Fantasy lineups until that particular storm has passed.

Blackburn
Defensively, Blackburn are in for a torrid time with the new partnership of Scott Dann and Chris Samba set for a series of challenges early on. Certainly, over the next four Gameweeks, it’s difficult to see Steve Kean’s side keeping a shut-out and that will mean that the attacking players will have to come to the fore if Rovers are to earn results. Given the performances so far, that seems doubtful.

Be wary of…
Stoke – Liverpool, United and Arsenal are all on the radar in the next six Gameweeks, handing new boys Peter Crouch and Cameron Jerome a challenging start to their new life in the Potteries. Clean sheets look hard to come by, too.

Wigan – a journey to City this weekend is just the start of three away trips in four, split by a home clash with Spurs in Gameweek six. While Franco Di Santo has form and Hugo Rodallega and Victor Moses have shown intent, the Latics may struggle to make an impression in the coming weeks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Anyone else wish they could have 4 forwards? I just know whoever I don't pick out of Rooney, RVP, Dzeko and Suarez is going to hurt me.

What do you guys think of this squad?

    Given (Ruddy)
Bosingwa, Ward, Kompany , Da Laet, Simpson
    Nasri, Brunt, Arteta, Jarvis, Dyer
    Rooney, Van Persi, Dzeko

Too much Arsenal cover with Arteta and RVP? Anyone else you would suggest for 8m instead of Artetea?

IMO Mata needs another game or two before we could make an educated call, right now he's a gamble.

Walcott appears to be very popular but have to admit, I've got no love for him.

I personally liked Walcott before the injury reports( so wait until the last minute to bring him in) Mata is too much of a risk now with the overcrowded Chelsea midfield.

To clarify - Mata is a gamble worth taking.

Walcott will start but not sure what role he'll play in a new look team, may not get the freedom he's had in recent games.

    My WC team:

    Given (Vorm)
R Taylor, Enrique, Bosingwa, De Laet (Ward)
    Nasri, Young, Arteta (Dyer, Moses)
    Suarez, Dzeko, Rooney

I noticed my lack of chelsea coverage and am thinking of getting in Mata. I'm leaning towards dropping Young as I have Rooney and have made profit on Young, then I could upgrade Moses (Petrov maybe).

    Any thoughts?

Everyone's lack of faith in Arsenal is worrying me slightly. I'd been planning shipping in RVP this week. I know they got a spanking against United but surely they'll give Swansea a good seeing too? RVP clearly has his shooting boots on, no one bringing him in?

RVP is a hard choice for me, mainly because I'd need to drop Rooney for him and I think Rooney is in teh form of his life right now and capable of scoring goals against anyone.

I've got Rooney down as Golden boot this season.

He's due his traditional metatarsal or ankle injury though... if he plays every game he could hit 35+ league goals this year with pennos + free kicks. 7 in his last 4 games for club/country is the mark of a man bang on form.

If you think they'll give Swansea a good spanking, go for it. Doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

I personally think we'll see a bit of a backlash to the battering Arsenal got at Old Trafford. It's pretty much the perfect game for Arsenal I feel. Swansea aren't the sort of team to "get amongst them" and rough them up, and are very much a 'home team'. RVP captain for me this week.

Anyone else thinking Moses is a bit of a Torres so far this season. Some solid performances but FAIL when it comes to putting the ball in the net or even picking up a assist or two... Want to stick with him but also watching Tcyhoi over the next few games weeks and expecting points from him... Hmm...

Yeah but the thing with Moses is that at 5.0m, anything over 2 pts per game is a good return... and for a 5m player he has looked very dangerous. I'd say give him some more time, although Cruasat & Moloney may reduce his minutes which would be annoying

Those goals came from predominantly playing in midfield, though. Which you need to take into account.

Having RVP and Rooney gives you a pretty good captain choice for the next 6 weeks. With City's rotation, Chelsea's rotation plus not having a decent striker, Spurs poor fixtures and poor form I'm finding it hard to look past having both.

I have a memory from the last few seasons of the gameweeks immediately following international weeks throwing up disappointing/surprising returns. That's obvious in terms of rotation I suppose, but it was also in terms of surprising results, weird hattrick heroes etc.

I might be imagining it but I seem to remember my big players not doing much in these weeks and the points hits I took having been a waste. Anyone else thought this too, or have any stats to prove or disprove the theory?

I do remember disappointment, but that could have been any of the first 35 weeks of my season really.

How bad is injury to Bent, Adam, Walcott and Richards.

Out of this who would start

    A. Kompany, Brunt and Dempsey
    B. Warnock, Taarabt and Arteta (already going with RVP)

Why the lack of love for Dempsey? Fulham have great fixtures bar City.

Bit overpriced for me. Good player, but just not consistent enough for 8.5 when you can get Walcott or Silva for a little bit more.

Hmm I'm not sure I trust Arsenal with two of my more expensive players and have Nasri instead of Silva at the mo. Everybody on here seems to think Arteta will be in the points but I don't really see it. There's a serious lack of options in that price range.

Yeah, I'm not fancying Arteta either. I've gone for Walcott, but nothing wrong with Dempsey. He's just never been a glamour FPL name here, I guess.

Who would you trade out for RVP? Suarez, Dzeko or Rooney? Not worried about money here.

Dzeko is probably least likely to start out of those, but then Suarez has 3 away games in the next 4 (and they're quite tough).

Short-term I'd lose Dzeko as I'd want Suarez for the whole season. If you don't mind transferring later, then lose Suarez.

Bale's fpl points were piss poor last season unless you had him for his 2 big game weeks.

        Arteta has better fixtures too

Looks good, I am also thinking of playing my WC.

If you wanted a slightly better keeper opt for Hennessey at 4.5, then maybe replace Jarvis (although he is racking up the points!!!) with Tchoyi of West Brom, might be a bit of a gamble but Odem and Long both injury doubts.

Seems like a lot of WC's being played due to a combination of 1)international break boardom and 2)unsustainable high scroing Man U and Man C scoring weeks. I for one am either saving my WC for the first double game week or to help me out when the inevitable and uncontrolable raft of injurys wipe out half my team. It seems silly to play WC card now when we were given a free one in GW2. It's a long (half) season. If you're resonably happy with your team and have a few prices risers in there it would seem to make sense to hold and play a WC with a bit of cash in the bank.
