634x258 Great Expectations

We continue our pre-season coverage with the introduction of our “Great Expectations” series.

These articles pick out a list of candidates who we believe have the potential to build on their progress from previous seasons, cementing themselves as key Fantasy assets.

We begin the series by presenting the case for Southampton’s Sadio Mane – a player who delivered 11 goals in his debut season, including the most explosive hat-trick in Premier League history.

The winger arrived at St Mary’s from Red Bull Salzburg last summer during a period of mass restructuring under new boss Ronald Koeman. Mane rolled up on the back of an extraordinary couple of seasons, where he produced 45 goals and 32 assists in 87 appearances across all competitions for the Austrian outfit.

Handed a starting price of 7.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Mane swiftly established himself as one to watch, bagging two goals and an assist in his first four starts. Beyond this instant flurry of activity, the fleet-footed winger drew blanks in his subsequent seven appearances, before reaffirming his potential with goals in three successive outings.

Mane was then ruled out of the African Cup of Nations after sustaining a calf complaint at the turn of the year. The Saints new boy then netted in his first start upon recovering but struggled to rediscover his form, only mustering a further two goals in the following 12 Gameweeks. His season-defining moment arrived in the Saints’ penultimate match of the season, in which he recorded the fastest-ever Premier League hat-trick – taking his tally to 11 goals for the campaign.

Key Factors

  • Mane registered just 24 starts throughout the season, as he took time to settle under Koeman. A couple of displays of ill discipline further served to diminish his Fantasy potential: the first case saw him dropped for Saints’ 2-0 home defeat to Liverpool in Gameweek 26 after turning up late to the stadium, while the second incident saw him reprimanded for attempting to take a spot-kick over designated penalty taker James Ward-Prowse during their 2-0 win over Hull City in Gameweek 32. Nonetheless, having started in 11 of the final 12 Gameweeks – compared to 13 starts in the first 26 matches – he looks to have finally cemented that wide berth for next season. To that end, Koeman recently heaped praise on Mane, talking up his prospects for the campaign ahead:

“I can’t see any players in the league who have the same speed as Sadio. I have always asked him to use that speed and use that movement, and the rest of the players know that is his quality. There is an understanding and that understanding was fantastic. He is a great young player who will be even better next season.”

  • Mane ended the season with 137 points to his name over a total of 30 league outings – an average of 4.6 points per appearance. Delving deeper into the data, though, the Senegal international served up an impressive average of 5.3 points per start for the Saints – greater than the likes of other mid-price options such as Gylfi Sigurdsson (4.8) and Jordan Henderson (4.5). Indeed, given that the top three midfielders Eden Hazard (6.1), Alexis Sanchez (6.1) and David Silva (6.0) weren’t too far ahead, Mane could be set to offer excellent value if, as expected, he can cement a regular role next term.

  • This brings us neatly onto the discussion of Mane’s likely price tag next season. Having ultimately finished 2014/15 some 97 points behind Hazard at the top of the midfield standings, he looks poised to remain in the mid-price bracket for the campaign ahead. Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen started last term at 8.0 after registering 132 points in his first season under Pochettino and we can expect Mane to be similarly priced in the 8.0 to 8.5 bracket. Given his potential to comfortably return double figure goal returns, that valuation should guarantee that he remains very much “alive” as a key asset in our seasons.

  • Mane boasts the sixth-best goal conversion rate (18.3%) among those midfielders who scored at least five times last term, with Silva and Hazard on 18.2% and 17.9% respectively. Encouragingly, this same quality is made manifest by his minutes per goal figure (204.3), which places him second – behind Arsenal’s Sanchez (192.4) – among those midfielders who clocked over 1500 minutes. Providing he earns greater pitch time, then, his points potential looks strong.

  • In terms of evaluating the choice route into Southampton’s attack, Mane arguably presents a stronger case than top scorer Graziano Pelle. Despite playing 1149 fewer minutes, the Senegal international netted just one less goal than the Italian and his above-mentioned conversion rate is not far off double Pelle’s 9.8%. Moreover, Mane’s pace has seen Koeman field him centrally and his eye for goal could thrive further if he’s handed a chance to solve his side’s scoring problems through the middle.

According to Daily Star, United are planning a 30m pounds move for Felipe Anderson who plays for Lazio and Brazil U21s.

30m for a relatively unknown player? I really hope this is false because this just makes no sense. Instead of strengthening the defence, United certainly doesn't need an Attacking midfielder. And they haven't had good experience with Andersons before.

He's not an 'unknown player' at all, and 30m definitely wouldn't be enough to get him anyway. 5 year contract, don't need to sell, just got CL, already said he's staying at Lazio.

read the other day that Benitez plans to employ Ronaldo as a number 9, this season, and probably offload Benzema.
Playing Ronaldo up top is the only way he can fit another (defensive-minded) midfielder into that side, yet accommodate the Bales, Modrics, Kroos' and James' - being the logic.

Yes, the series is amazing. I started recently and still am on the first book and it's lovely. Having watched the show, most of the times I know what's going to happen but still is worth the read. Have you read the whole series?

I have indeed. Like you I came in based on the show and enjoyed Book 1 despite knowing the plot. Devoured the rest of the series after that. The problem is that it's made me a book snob, forever complaining about the show! Plus The huge waiting game for another book. Quality takes time though.

We all are book snobs when it comes to criticizing TV shows and movies. I have hardly found any movie/show that has been as good as the book. And I think that's okay as they have to keep it concise because of limitations of the time.

I think it's nearly impossible for shows to be as good as the books, you get to use your own imagination when reading, whereas with films what they show you is how it is like it or not.

Agreed. For example it's really hard for a show to show what a character is thinking or go into the little details of the book, where there is no dialogue involved. The films/shows just cover the story, the imagination part comes from the books.

For something "different" you could try the Great Train Robbery by Michael Creighton (the Jurassic Park guy). It's about the original train robbery in the 1800's not the famous Ronnie Biggs one. You end up learning a lot about life in the 19th Century as well as it being a really good story.

Everyone thinks its fantasy like LOTR with Orcs and Magic but it's really not.

Basically it is a fantasy book, but it's heavily politicised with so many twists and turns.

The land of Westeros was seven kingdoms in the old times ruled by seven powerful houses, then it was united into one kingdom with one ruler to sit the Iron Throne.

The books start off just after a rebellion against the Targaryen family (who ruled for centuries since their conquest from the far east in Valyria). So another family has taken the Iron Throne, the Baratheons. There is seemingly a time of peace until the series starts and the Hand of the King (Jon Arryn, the King's most loyal man basically) is killed under mysterious circumstances. So the King's friend, and Warden of the North, Ned Stark, begins his investigation into why the Hand of the King was killed.

And so the story of betrayal and lust for power begins between Starks, Lannisters, Targaryens, Martells, Tyrells, Baratheons and Arryn's (i.e. the seven kingdom's all looking to rule the Iron Throne)

Series 1 of the TV show doesn't really skip much from the first book, but from Series 2 onwards it changes a good bit

I prefer the books; much more in-depth and the way it's written you can't tell who is going to live or die. On the show you know by the amount of screen-time and dialogue people get if they're going to survive or not 😆

Homicide: A year on the Killing Streets by David Simon (he created 'The Wire') is a brilliant book about the year he spent following police around Baltimore (America's murder capital).

Also 'The Jigsaw Man' & 'Picking up the Pieces' by Paul Britton are both fantastic books about his time psychologically profiling killers during the 70s onwards as forensic science started to be used more in the UK. Has some brilliant insights into the Jamie Bulger and Fred West cases, along with some other very interesting cases.

Ha, yeh, but that is due to picking wrong players. I think thr game should be about a combination of picking players and balancing your budget.

I could also almost certainly do better if I played like a dullard. Triggerlips bringing in Terry on the last day of the season for example. How is that fun?

Too easy for others, I think. He has a point - although I don't agree it was rubbish. But if it's easy to get all the big hitters then teams become very similar. I believe you need to work hard on TV if you are to be able to afford all of the likes of Aguero, Sanchez and Hazard - or cripple the rest of your team.

It's never easy WK, at the end of the day it's the same game for all of us.
We all have to work within the same constraints/rules/pricing etc, it's just a case of trying to get as many points over the season with an initial 100m

I understand what you're saying, but it's like racing an F1 car or a Mini.

If everyone is in the same car, we are still competing on level ground, but driving the Mini is still easier than driving an F1 car.

I couldn't disagree more WK. Those who got Kane early also got to build other quality players in around him.
The whole point of varying prices is to give many options for squads. Kane was priced at a sum they thought he was worth at the start of the season.
If you are saying prices should rise more rapidly, then that is a different argument.

I dont think they made a mistake on Kanes pricing, and of course those who jumped early were advantaged by it, but once he was about 5.5m, most serious players had him. From that point onwards, nobody had to sacrifice an area to get big hitters.

Since after Kane, I didnt have to compromise in defence, midfield, or attack.

I'd just prefer that there wasnt an emerging player like Kane or Ramsey.

no, there will always be good bargains to be had. for example, take a move such as Milner to Liverpool. At City he is 5.5, but at liverpool would be more like 7-7.5. if a transfer happens after the july 7th date or whenever the prices are published, then there will always be bargains like that because there are a LOT of transfers that happen after July. Likewise foreign players who come in are sometimes priced low but start off well.

        I'm with you ILF.

This season, in some ways, was exceptional. Had all of Costa, Rooney, Aguero, Silva, Fabregas, Sanchez, Ozil, Ramsey, Cazorla, Hazard, ADM, Mata, Sturridge, Sterling etc. been playing simultaneously and performing it would have created enough headaches. But a lot of players were poor/injured when others were great, so cheap options allowed many to have a template. I don't think that will happen to the same extent next season.

If the obvious Big Hitters like Aguero, Hazard and Sanchez are priced higher then that is good for good managers. If more hidden gems are priced up then it levels the playing field. I think that the former will be kept to a sensible price level as FPL are always looking for ways to keep the masses interested.

The La Liga club are on the lookout for a top-class goalkeeper after Diego Alves suffered a serious injury on the last day of the 2014-15 season.

Having spent the past few weeks examining the situations of various goalkeepers across Europe they identified Valdes, who signed an 18-month deal at United in January, as a target.

I dont think it's best for Wilshere, but I think it's best for England. Other then Carrick, Wilshere is the only player that has the ability to play that role, imo.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

In seasons gone by Nasri and Ireland have been among emerging high scoring players who failed to replicate their fine form the next season

Who of 14/15's emerging stars like Mane will actually have a successful second season?

And who will get struck by rotation and poor form?

The one to watch from Soton may not be Mane at all. JWP may continue to be a bargain as the season offers a chance for him to cement a place.

Got my eye on JWP, if he has a good U21 tourney them nails down a regular spot for Saints he could make a mockery of his price tag (I'm guessing £5m???). On pennos, creative and an eye for goal which so far hasn't borne fruit

Mane should do well, Kane probably wont score at that rate.

I'd say Gomis, Diouf, Herrera, Mahrez will do well.

Don't think Kane can score more than 15 goals next season, tho.

I think Kane will score 10-15 goals, and Mane will be ruined by people finding him out and Europa.

Bolaise , Cisse , Adam , Gomis , Mahrez , Ings . Mane and Kane could struggle with Europa League and expectations .

If Southhampton move on in Europa League we can safely steer clear of the lot of them.
Just look what's happened to similar sized clubs like Swans, Newcastle, & Everton in the recent past.

As stated above, Kane will need to up his shots in the box total if he hopes for another 20 goal season b/c I doubt very highly that he can keep banging in 30% of his efforts from close range.

Look for Sigurdsson to maintain a decent level of production as his *usage rate* within the Swans offence should remain very high. (Usage rate meaning he takes a lot of their shots / set pieces & creates by far the most chances for their team)

On the flip side, look for Eriksen to improve significantly as he was terribly *unlucky* this year. (Top 5 in Chances Created w/ 83 & Spurs only converted 2 of them into goals)

And similarly, if Trippier can find a new team & subsequent teammate's forehead to put all those lovely crosses on then we may just have a nice 4th defender to call on down the road.
(Are Liverpool fans excited for the potential Trippier to Benteke combo? 😉 )

PS. I have no clue which S. Downing to expect next year?
The man has shown several times over that he's capable of a 160pt campaign or a 70pt disaster. I supppose a lot will depend on the new manager's philosophy.

As Barca seem to getting mentioned a lot. One player I've always thought would fit in better than any other player in world football is David Silva...Have they ever actually been linked with him ?

He's not great at tracking back, is he? Genuinely am not sure, but I don't know where they'd play him.

A little trickier now because they've shifted from a midfield emphasis to more a front three emphasis.

Problem is he'd never play ahead of Xavi or Iniesta. And now with their changr of style, they needed Rakitic's energy in midfield.
