Niggling injuries and so-so form stymied Oscar’s attempt at a quick start to the 2014/15 Premier League season. The Brazilian starlet notched one assist in three appearances over the opening five Gameweeks, prompting nearly 100,000 early uptakers to sanction his sale. That decision proved rash, however, when Oscar subsequently recorded three goals and one assist in his next five outings.

Oscar continued to deliver consistent attacking returns right through to mid-January, before a downturn in form resulted in a reduced role. Ultimately, he proved to be a fine pick-up when handed an unbroken run of starts and clearly harbours the potential to be a top-tier Fantasy recruit. Could next season beckon in such an evolution?

Key Factors

  • What with his involvement in the 2011 U20 World Cup, 2012 London Olympics, 2013 Confederations Cup and 2014 World Cup, Oscar hasn’t been afforded a prolonged summer break for over four years. That’s set to change this year, though, by virtue of the fact he sustained a knock at the tail-end of the Premier League season and has subsequently been ruled out of Brazil’s Copa America squad. Blues boss Jose Mourinho is confident that a lengthy rejuvenation period will do wonders for Oscar’s progression as a player, setting him up to emulate the heroics of Eden Hazard during Chelsea’s triumphant title-winning campaign. Although rumours have surfaced suggesting that Oscar could be deemed surplus to requirements this transfer window – a theory strengthened by his bit-part role in the second half of the season – Mourinho’s quotes regarding the player dispel that notion:

“Someone like Oscar, for example, is a fabulous player but he’s never had a pre-season in his life. He’s always been playing in tournaments everywhere, he’s never had a rest. Now, because he’s injured he’s not going to the Copa America and I have a feeling that next year Oscar can have the same kind of evolution as Hazard had this season. I’m happy with my squad and I have to respect the people that gave us the title.”

  • Oscar was pitched at a starting value of 8.5 in the Fantasy Premier League season just passed. Considering that he notched a single assist from Gameweek 23 onwards – causing his value to plummet to 6.9 – it’s likely he’ll remain in the mid-price bracket next term. That being said, Oscar’s value as a Fantasy asset when fit and firing shouldn’t be underestimated; the former Internacional midfielder carded six goals and seven assists in the first 22 Gameweeks, drawing blanks in just eight starts. Furthermore, Oscar displayed a capacity for big-hitting returns that was on par with Cesc Fabregas, having matched his four 10+ points hauls. Couple this with his keen eye for goal and Oscar could well be the most valuable route into the champions’ squad next season if he can cement that number ten berth.

  • On that note, Hazard and Fabregas are – save for any high-powered additions to Chelsea’s attack – set to remain as the premier midfield picks in Mourinho’s set-up. This should – security of starts permitting – render Oscar an enticing differential with the potential to flourish into a top pick if he enjoys a sustained run of starts. If Oscar emerges as a viable alternative, it would free up significant funds that would facilitate the recruitment of a myriad other high-priced midfielders, with the likes of Alexis Sanchez and David Silva topping many a preliminary shopping list.

  • Burrowing deeper into the underlying statistics, Oscar registered more assists (eight) than his previous two campaigns at the London club, despite clocking the fewest number of minutes (2021) since his switch to the Premier League. In terms of his goal threat, the Brazilian schemer fashioned shooting attempts at the sixth-fastest rate (28.8 minutes per chance) among those players that tallied at least 1500 minutes of pitch time. This figure compares very favourably to the likes of Hazard (45.2 minutes) and Fabregas (70.3 minutes), with Diego Costa (28.1 minutes) and Loic Remy (24.6 minutes) the only individuals in Chelsea’s camp boasting superior numbers. To further illustrate Oscar’s proclivity for carving out shooting opportunities, he ranked joint-eight among all midfielders with regards to shots inside the box (38), in spite of his above-mentioned poverty of minutes.

Reports - Southampton close in on £3.5m deal for Sporting Lisbon defender

Southampton are closing in on the signing of Sporting Lisbon right-back Cedric, according to reports in Portugal.

The 23-year-old's contract is due to expire in 12 months' time and, after refusing to signing a new one, Sporting are willing to let him go.

According to O Jogo, Southampton have won the race for Cedric and seen off any interest from their Premier League rivals.

Saints have reportedly agreed a £3.5m fee with Sporting and personal terms with the player are now close to being finalised.

Fuchs could be a good differential to begin with. He's a Baines. Trust me. Dope with set pieces, attacking full back, screams FPL gold.

Ah ok. Fuchs is a pretty darn good option, like an upgrade on Schlupp. Plenty of assist potential and a free kick specialist.

A quick google to see how Bilic has done at club level

Bilic was manager of Besiktas last season. He finished 3rd last season, 5 teams scored more goals, Only 2 teams conceded less.
In 2013/14, they finished 3rd. 4 teams scored more but only 1 team conceded less
At Lokomotiv, he finished 10th, with 6 teams conceding less, This generally backs the opinion on here that Bilic will make west ham better defensively. His teams don't seem to be all that attack minded

Level your Magic up, then use the constant spells whilst going round and round in a circle.
Watch out for Giants, they send you into outer space.
The DLC is in fact 100% worth it in general so if you don't mind the cost, buy it.
The sword that kills undead and then makes others flee is op.

Heavy Armour is generally overrated imo, got through the whole game happy with Elven and Glass or Mage robes.

You will find a lot of rather good Magic swords, it is a very good source of income as realistically you only need 3 on you, for different circumstances obviously.

Horses are absolute bosses, get one, jump off it and they will take most things down, this is handy if multiple mid/low enemies turn up.

Potions are the best way to heal, food is pretty useless after a while.

I wouldn't worry. You kill the dragon, there's no ending and then yoyu're just back on the world map again and the game continues. Massive anit-climax.

I enjoyed sykrim but got too bogged down by sidequests. I was 100 hours in before someone pointed out that you'll never 100% complete the game as some of the quests respawn.

            Thanks for the tip, Chris.
I'd been doing side quests to beef up a bit for the main storyline....and really should get on with the main story. It's all levelled to you anyway I suppose....

Not sure where I'll get the time from though 😉

Def do some side quests as it adds to the experience. However I totally boycotted the main story and did hours upon hours of side quests, to the point that I forgot what the main plot was. Things started to become a bit repetitive too, which took away from the game. I think if you get the balance right it's a great game. Still prefer witcher 3 though, although neither beat fallout 3.

Don't worry about the leveling up system. Its daunting at first but will fall into place.

My tip would be not to follow the main questline immediately and just explore the world on offer. Much more enjoyable that way.

As fantastic as Skyrim is (and it truly is), I still prefer Oblivion and Morrowind, so make sure to check them out too.

Ha there's nothing we can do until we get some prices. I went Fab over Haz last year until my GW8 wildcard. I won't be doing that again this year.

We won't need to worry about Sanch and Aguero for our GW1 squads with the Copa, so we can figure that out a couple of weeks in.

          - Emphasis on set pieces for returns last year with PSV, took a lot of free-kicks which may be taken off him by the greedy captain.

          - System. Obviously he looks great in a 4-3-3 coming in off the right, but rumour has it LVG is looking at 3-5-2 again with him up top. OOP if true, monitor during pre-season.

          - Alternatives. You could argue that Rooney will be a much greater option as the lone striker when in form. Similarly a cut-price Mata would be intriguing, as would Di María if he plays on the left of a midfield three.

Pre-season and others signings is the key.

Morrowind is apparently the best, graphics out of the box look terrible though, there is a mod that retextures it to be a bit more like Oblivion from what I saw on the Youtube. ESO is terrible or so say a lot of people. Your call.

I've played Oblivion and though I dislike the level up system and some times couldn't be 100% absorbed into the world it is a solid game I've played through.

I vastly preferred Fallout 3 though and would play that first.

Used to be Milner I think, but I remember youngsters were all the rage when Rooney and then Walcott broke through about 8 to 10 years ago, so assume it is someone who was thrown on as the next great hope for some crummy team who is now rotting in the reserves of a lower league club. Wasn't there a guy at Derby - Barnes, Giles or summat like that?

So if West Ham get Bilic, could Tomkins, Reid and Cresswell be viable options (depending on fixtures)?

Hopefully Cresswell is 5.5 and not 6

You mean one of Reid/Tomkins? If Cresswell is 5.5 and the others 5.0 surely Cresswell is worth the extra 0.5 if you are going to buy one

Not too conclusive IMO... Fulham and Newcastle the most recent examples, both got off to poor starts. Could go either way. Teams generally perform worse after Europa league matches, and West Ham/Saints will have one before GW1, due to the earlier PL start this season.

            • 12 Years

It's true it could go either way, but surely that applies to every team?

I agree that teams perform worse after a Thursday EL match (I've done the numbers on this and will post soon), so GW1 could be tricky.

My point is that the assumption that European qualifying means avoiding teams early on isn't quite right.

      Yep they could be.

Yeah let's hope. Even if 4.5m, he is essentially worthless since all the serious players will own him. Much like Chester at the start last season.

Everyone knew he would score a goal and keep a CS for 15pts in GW 1.

*I benched him GW 1. Played him in GW 2, for his red card.

Hmm, it's pretty 50/50 for both imo. Taylor was 4.5 last year for the Swans, PvA didn't actually score too many points, hopefully not another Trippier though.

        Reckon Cresswell will be 5.5?

He was 4.5 because they still had Ben Davies. He will be 5 imo, Swans defence is very good.

Not sure about Cresswell, it's borderline between 5 and 5.5.

Creswell at 5? Can't see that happening. His points/20 is 6.4. I know that's not be all and end all but Cresswell would be incredibly underpriced if so

I am turkish and a fenerbahçe fan. fenerbahçe and galatasaray underperformed this year, but bilic couldn't even get close to the title with a great squad. In 2 years in Turkey, he couldn't win a single match against fener or galatasaray. he often made tactical mistakes in important matches. However, there was a lot of pressure on him in Turkey and west ham is not a club with tough objectives, so I expect west ham to have an ordinary season..
