Niggling injuries and so-so form stymied Oscar’s attempt at a quick start to the 2014/15 Premier League season. The Brazilian starlet notched one assist in three appearances over the opening five Gameweeks, prompting nearly 100,000 early uptakers to sanction his sale. That decision proved rash, however, when Oscar subsequently recorded three goals and one assist in his next five outings.

Oscar continued to deliver consistent attacking returns right through to mid-January, before a downturn in form resulted in a reduced role. Ultimately, he proved to be a fine pick-up when handed an unbroken run of starts and clearly harbours the potential to be a top-tier Fantasy recruit. Could next season beckon in such an evolution?

Key Factors

  • What with his involvement in the 2011 U20 World Cup, 2012 London Olympics, 2013 Confederations Cup and 2014 World Cup, Oscar hasn’t been afforded a prolonged summer break for over four years. That’s set to change this year, though, by virtue of the fact he sustained a knock at the tail-end of the Premier League season and has subsequently been ruled out of Brazil’s Copa America squad. Blues boss Jose Mourinho is confident that a lengthy rejuvenation period will do wonders for Oscar’s progression as a player, setting him up to emulate the heroics of Eden Hazard during Chelsea’s triumphant title-winning campaign. Although rumours have surfaced suggesting that Oscar could be deemed surplus to requirements this transfer window – a theory strengthened by his bit-part role in the second half of the season – Mourinho’s quotes regarding the player dispel that notion:

“Someone like Oscar, for example, is a fabulous player but he’s never had a pre-season in his life. He’s always been playing in tournaments everywhere, he’s never had a rest. Now, because he’s injured he’s not going to the Copa America and I have a feeling that next year Oscar can have the same kind of evolution as Hazard had this season. I’m happy with my squad and I have to respect the people that gave us the title.”

  • Oscar was pitched at a starting value of 8.5 in the Fantasy Premier League season just passed. Considering that he notched a single assist from Gameweek 23 onwards – causing his value to plummet to 6.9 – it’s likely he’ll remain in the mid-price bracket next term. That being said, Oscar’s value as a Fantasy asset when fit and firing shouldn’t be underestimated; the former Internacional midfielder carded six goals and seven assists in the first 22 Gameweeks, drawing blanks in just eight starts. Furthermore, Oscar displayed a capacity for big-hitting returns that was on par with Cesc Fabregas, having matched his four 10+ points hauls. Couple this with his keen eye for goal and Oscar could well be the most valuable route into the champions’ squad next season if he can cement that number ten berth.

  • On that note, Hazard and Fabregas are – save for any high-powered additions to Chelsea’s attack – set to remain as the premier midfield picks in Mourinho’s set-up. This should – security of starts permitting – render Oscar an enticing differential with the potential to flourish into a top pick if he enjoys a sustained run of starts. If Oscar emerges as a viable alternative, it would free up significant funds that would facilitate the recruitment of a myriad other high-priced midfielders, with the likes of Alexis Sanchez and David Silva topping many a preliminary shopping list.

  • Burrowing deeper into the underlying statistics, Oscar registered more assists (eight) than his previous two campaigns at the London club, despite clocking the fewest number of minutes (2021) since his switch to the Premier League. In terms of his goal threat, the Brazilian schemer fashioned shooting attempts at the sixth-fastest rate (28.8 minutes per chance) among those players that tallied at least 1500 minutes of pitch time. This figure compares very favourably to the likes of Hazard (45.2 minutes) and Fabregas (70.3 minutes), with Diego Costa (28.1 minutes) and Loic Remy (24.6 minutes) the only individuals in Chelsea’s camp boasting superior numbers. To further illustrate Oscar’s proclivity for carving out shooting opportunities, he ranked joint-eight among all midfielders with regards to shots inside the box (38), in spite of his above-mentioned poverty of minutes.

        I'm not 100% on this, but weren't we 19th in the form league post Xmas?

        I was a Big fan of BFS, but I think the timing was right, he wouldn't have approached things any differently, and we would have struggled more IMO.

    Saw some talk of Swans defence earlier, prompting me to pour me heart out.

    The Swans defence bothers me hugely. They performed poorly in what most agree are the three important defensive stats:

    - Shots in Box Conceded: 16th
    - Big Chances Conceded: 14th
    - Total Chances Conceded: 16th

    They were also very bad, at least early on in the season, for shot location in that they consistently allowed opponents to shoot from prime locations (can't find the link, sorry).

    For that reason I avoided them and yet they always seemed to rack up the cleanies. Should I abandon stats for defence? Or am I just reading them wrong?

      When I first noticed they had awful stats, they conceded 6 to Chelsea the following week. There's usually a correlation, Southampton proved this too when their poor stats started to show.

        Hah! I captained Costa that week for that reason and it paid dividends then, but overall Naylor and Fabianski were fabulous value for a lot of people on here.

        it could still be difficult to interpret
        easily possible that although they offered shots from best locations, the shots could all have been under pressure, players forced onto their weaker foot etc.
        I think you have to look at it along with visual evidence.
        Thinking about arsenal 1-0 at end of season, they had loads of shots from middle of goals but where all rushed due to pressure from defenders. Could easily be their tactics to push teams like arsenal into crowded area

          Fair enough. That is the magic sauce that stats will almost certainly never be able to measure fully.

          Shots in the box conceded is the most reliable stat. Unfortunately, 38 games is too small a sample to get a good fit to goals conceded and then to CS.

      You might possibly have to couple those stats to the teams they were playing. So, it may sound harsh, but for example if they gave a player like Pelle those great chances I wouldn't be so worried 😛

      The main thing we have to look at first and foremost is the actual output of a player. If a player has crap stats but keeps on scoring, then we'd have him.

      Swansea may have crap stats, but if they keep performing, then I don't see why we shouldn't have defensive cover from them. They could always make 1 or 2 signings that bolster them defensively and improve them.

      On a few occasions (haven't watched much of them) the way they play might force the opposition to shoot from a crap angle, which is a shot inside the box, but they're forcing them to shoot from a crap angle. They also have a decent keeper who can block these shots.

        See the twitter link above - they were doing the opposite, allowing the opposition to get into good positions to shoot.

        But yes, you're right, at some point I guess you have to abandon the stats and get the players who are scoring. Deciding when to do that is the art though.

      Is it simply down to the nature of the team against them and how they alter their style?

      Getting away with it vs weak sides, but stronger sides punish them?

          Right. Firstly, they have three of the best-performing defenders: Williams, Taylor and Fabianski. These are more important than team stats, at all times. Secondly, the team stats fell away in the last twelve weeks, owing to injuries in midfield. Thirdly, they seemed to be pretty tired after Easter, a defect that I am sure that Monk will rectify during pre-Season

            The first part - individuals being more important to defence than how many shots the team concedes - seems counter-intuitive to me but I'm obviously doing something wrong so I'll happily demur.

            Changing the range to GW1-25 doesn't seem to change anything about the stats but I guess I should refer to point #1 😀

                That's last six games, showing them having more or less the same ranking as they did for the whole season.

                And changing it to GW1-25 paints the same picture. I won't gainsay you about their performances dropping off at the end but those stats don't draw that out.

                    GW1-25: 5th worst

      A large part of why they were such excellent value was the predictability of their clean sheets:

      vs Bottom Half - 20 games, 16 Goals Conceded, 10 CS
      vs Top Half - 18 games, 33 Goals Conceded, 3 CS

      I'd be interested to see how their stats against weak opposition compares to the rest of the league.

      Hard to say. Don't know shite about how his Lokomotiv and Besiktas played in general.

      His Croatia was pretty good, got absolutely robbed in EC 2012 where they were the better team against both finalists. And his Besiktas did okay against Arsenal and loudly dominated Tottenham and Liverpool despite rather small margins in final results, and maybe it's not a big achievement, but at least if you think West Ham is about the same level club as Besiktas he might reproduce that dominance in PL, which the fans should be pretty happy about, at least, right?

      Although Spurs played the bench, Pool rotated some too, and Arsenal were reduced to 10 in both matches. And the smashing Bilic received from Club Bruges doesn't paint too flattering picture of his abilities.

      But at least he has history of doing well in some big matches.

          I'm relieved to be honest. He's awesome going forward, but La Liga and the PL demand different things from a fullback. At 32, he'd have to adapt very quickly and then probably only have another season before he wasn't able to play every week... Younger would be better.

            You sign Alves, you come up with a plan to cover his defensive problems. Just as you do with any top class midfielder / striker who isn't happy defending.

              So they sign the best right back in the world who apparently isn't a right back after all? 😉

              Doesn't add up to me, might as well get a winger who actually specialises in attacking rather than vice versa. Barca utilise him well at the expense of a defense, which wouldn't work in most other teams that actually need to defend.

    "The Premier League is very exciting," said Marc Kosicke. "And we do not only think about the top four because there are some other great clubs below them. But I am not sure the profile of the job could work."

    The German has been linked with Premier League clubs including Liverpool since leaving Dortmund at the end of the season.

      Wasn't his ridicilous celebration after scoring a penalty at 4-1 because someone was filming him for a documentary?

      So, last 12 matches they tightened up a lot in terms of Big Chances, but got CS's at roughly the same rate as the rest of the season (just under 1 per 3 games).

      GW1-25: joint worst for big chances, joint third for clean sheets with 8
      GW26-38: 11th for big chances, joint 9th for clean sheets with 4
      Overall: 5th worst for big chances, 6th best for clean sheets

      To me this seems to say either that Big Chances aren't that great a predictor or that they got quite lucky.

          Obviously I can see how having a great shot-stopper can compensate for conceding lots of chances, but how can a good performance from a defender do that? Once they've conceded the chance, the defender has failed at his job and it's now in the hands of the shooter (and more literally the goalie).

          As I say, I'm not claiming to be right about this, just confused 🙂

        There are no defence predictors, only indicators.
        It only takes three seconds to score a goal.

    BT sport will show a minimum of 12 Champions League matches and 14 Europa League games via a new free-to-air channel called BT Sport Showcase, that's less than one per game week on average.

      Each British club will be shown at least once, and looks to me in the wording (reading between the lines) like the "red button" option is not going to be available if you are watching via Sky, which is going to be very annoying (though not as bad as when BT Sport first started and you couldn't get it on the multiroom)

    Defensive Points based on Clean Sheets/Goals conceded only.

    Elite Group;
    West Brom*(65) & Chelsea(63).

    Lower Elite/Upper Middle;
    Southampton(51).

    Middle Group;
    Man City(43), Arsenal(42), Liverpool(41), Man United(37), Sunderland(35) & Swansea(35).

    Lower Group;
    Everton(25), Hull(24), Burnley(23), Stoke(23), Aston Villa(22), West Ham(21), Tottenham(20) & Leicester(19).

    Basement Group;
    Newcastle(10), Crystal Palace*(6), QPR(-5).

    *WBA & CRY stats based on 38 games under Pulis/Pardew.

    Obviously not a great indicator of individuals with factors like save points, bonus points and attacking points not taken account for but instead shows the value of the defensive unit as a whole.

      Despite a poor season for Everton and Baines he finished only 0.2 ppg behind Terry and Ivanovic. His price will travel south whilst the Chelsea pair will probably go North.

          If Everton perform anywhere near their previous norm for defensive pts next season then Baines will still be a good shout. He doesn't normally need very many assists/kicks/or pens pts to be a good pick, even of he doesn't have a monoply...Twenty extra pts for those duties is enough to set him apart.

          I'm more interested in Jagielka, that's how low Baines's stock has plummeted for me. Baines needs to be 5.5m now for me to consider him. Stones definitely looking a little more promising as should be the cheapest.

          I doubt he'll be affordable alongside a Chelsea defender anyway. I was just pointing out to BF that he actually was third best def in the game for ppg last season...amazingly...
