Despite Manchester United suffering a hugely disappointing 2013/14 season, which culminated in the departure of David Moyes, Wayne Rooney enjoyed a successful campaign, scoring 17 goals and laying on 12 assists.

The Red Devils’ skipper ended up with 190 points in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), his third highest tally to date, so hopes were high ahead of 2014/15, as new manager Louis van Gaal settled into the hotseat.

However, Rooney’s campaign was to prove frustrating, as a shift in position stalled his quest for goals and ultimately restricted his ability to justify the tag of a true heavy-hitting Fantasy asset.

With Radamel Falcao only arriving on loan during deadline day, Rooney began the 2014/15 season up front, scoring twice and providing an assist in United’s first four matches. The Colombian striker’s first start came in the 5-3 defeat at Leicester alongside Robin van Persie, with Rooney fielded “in the hole” in a 3-4-1-2 formation. Van Gaal stuck with the trio for the home encounter against West Ham the following week, and while Rooney opened the scoring, he was then sent off for a ill-judged challenge on Stewart Downing.

Following his return from a three-match ban, the England captain embarked on a decent run of form, scoring five goals and bagging two assists in his next eight league outings, although he spent much of that time playing in central midfield as Van Gaal opted for a lone striker system to tighten up defensively.

Starting the season priced at 10.5 in FPL, Rooney dropped to 10.2 during his suspension, though his upturn in form had seen his price peak at 10.8 by Gameweek 21. The United skipper would fail to justify that new investment, though, blanking in each of his next eight appearances and with Van Persie and Falcao also toiling, Van Gaal bemoaned the fact he didn’t have a “20 goal a season striker” to call upon. The United boss then deployed Rooney up front once again and saw his side produce their best form of the season, chalking up wins against Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester City between Gameweek 29-32, with Rooney scoring four times in six starts.

United ended the season with just one win in their last six matches, however, with Rooney unable to add to his 12 goals and five assists. He finished the campaign with 132 points in FPL, his lowest total since 2006, although his goal conversion rate of 15.2% was higher than both Van Persie (13.2%) and Falcao (10.8%).

THE PROSPECTS

The United squad for next season is already taking shape, with Dutch international Memphis Depay arriving from PSV, while Falcao has departed Old Trafford after an ineffective loan spell.

Depay will likely be deployed on the left of his preferred 4-3-3 formation, providing pace, trickery and a goal threat from out wide which could also see him handed a share of set-pieces. Whilst Van Gaal has admitted that, as captain, Rooney is a guaranteed starter, it’s obvious that his position on the pitch is key to how we assess his prospects.

With question marks hovering over Robin van Persie’s pitch time, Rooney is likely to remain in the premium bracket amongst forwards, with an FPL price tag of around 10.0 to 10.5 expected. If that proves to be the case, he could be limited to the role of an elite differential for much of the season.

Given Rooney often had to play in midfield because of the paucity of options available, it’s hoped that, should new additions arrive in the centre of the park, the England skipper will be fielded in a more advanced role on a regular basis. With no summer tournament, Rooney should also benefit from an extended break, allowing him to get a full pre-season under his belt.

We must also consider the situation surrounding United’s penalty takers, with Juan Mata now seemingly the first-choice after netting from the spot against Crystal Palace, following Rooney’s miss against Liverpool and Van Persie’s failure against West Brom.

While Mata ended the season as a regular in the starting XI, should Angel di Maria stay at Old Trafford this summer and rediscover his form, Mata’s start could under threat, possibly leaving the door open for Rooney to regain spot-kick duties.

With Mata, Di Maria and Depay all likely to come in cheaper than Rooney, however, it remains to be seen whether the England star can get close to rivalling Sergio Aguero and Diego Costa as a premium option in our three-man frontlines.

If the likes of Watford’s Troy Deeney and Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson can follow in the footsteps of last season’s flourishing budget options such as Charlie Austin, Saido Berahino and Harry Kane, Rooney would seem unlikely to enter the equation.

Heavy midfield investment looks inevitable, as pricey big-hitters such as Eden Hazard, Alexis Sanchez and David Silva jostle for our attentions. For Rooney to oust the budget striker options and become a real Fantasy force in 2015/16, an assured role up front, allied with penalty duties, look set to be key factors.

I thought Wigan always played good football and were not capable of much more tbh . He built a decent team on a small budget N'Zogbia , McCarthy , Rodellega , Maloney , Watson . He had an excellent first season at Everton too , lots of good teams struggle with the Europa League and Moyes tenure was very up and down and he had them at the foot of the table alot .

There was some obvious amount of luck in his first season. Notably in that "resilient" defence that actually conceded a lot of quality shots, and was only getting older.

But generally, I agree with you. He had merits, and is a good manager, but many things rot at Everton now. I'd think if he manages to fix that defence, they could have a good season.

I think Spurs are in a spot of trouble next season. Their defence was just about the worst in the prem for conceding chances and their midfield more than a bit goal shy. Losing Harry Kane will be a bit of a hammer blow.

Yup. They had one of the worst defences and lower mid table attack too. Only Kane's and Lloris's individual performances kept them winning against all odds. They need to change a lot, and it doesn't promise too good that the most likely change is that they lose their GK. How much losing Kane will affect is more difficult to say, as we do not have guarantees that this was his consistent level. Could have been an odd spectacular season, in which case this would be a good time to sell him and he could flop spectacularly in the new club.

Just as bad is the fact that the club seem flat, at best. in terms of the general feel of the club. It has an air of going nowhere with no particular driving force or personality to change things for the better if Kane goes.

Individual performances of kane and lloris?

And bentaleb, and Eriksen, and chadli, and rose(towards the end) mason and lamela are improving too.

Mid table attack? They are the only club to have three players in double goal figures!

                  Harry Kane isn't going anywhere.:D

As for the defence, it settled towards the end when they stopped playing chiriches and walker. Something like 3 clean sheets in their last five games.

Not so sure. United's midfield will be same lottery as Arsernal's with Mata, Young, Ander and possibly Di Maria and Feliani competing for points, Delay's ownership won't exceed 10% unless he has pre season form. Might take time to settle in Prem also.

That's ultimately hunting for food I guess, but it would have to be "humanely" done. None of the dogs/ starving techniques used by the gits out our way

I'm the complete opposite to be honest, very rarely care when a bunch of people die somewhere nowhere near me. :/ Animal deaths are disgusting though.

It's like when I hear about some animal cruelty or neglect and everyone is banging on about how the person who done it should be sent to prison for life. I mean yeah you shouldn't hurt animals for fun, but it's still an animal, doesn't equate to a human life.

Let's say all the rumours we read in the newspapers were true, what would be the prices of:

    Schneiderlin (Arsenal) -

    Falcao (Chelsea) -

    Kovacic (Liverpool) -

    Tevez (Liverpool) -

    Sterling (Man City) -

    Pogba (Man City) -

    Kane (Man United) -

    Austin (Newcastle) -

    Bolasie (Spurs) -

      Schneiderlin (Arsenal) - £25M

      Falcao (Chelsea) - £15M

      Kovacic (Liverpool) - £30M

      Tevez (Liverpool) - £25M

      Sterling (Man City) - €50M

Pogba (Man City) - €60M (I think they are restricted by FFP to only use €60M on transfers, so can't buy both Sterling and Pogba, and probably can't afford Pogba who is likely to cost upwards from €80M)

      Kane (Man United) - £50M

      Austin (Newcastle) - £12M

      Bolasie (Spurs) - £7M

The black one or the white one? I like the black one, not seen the white one properly, in the flesh on the players like. The chequerboard pattern is horrendous though, the collar looks really tacky, too 90's-esque for me.

I'm not a big fan of grey myself, but the striping is nice enough, I think it should be uniform though, maybe just a matte and shinier black instead of grey. The best kits are always simple. I think with the home one it should be red/yellow or red/white, pick one not both.

Lol, it's something different for a reason! What on earth is that person thinking? That team would be obliterated by any team with even half decent wingers.

And I feel very sorry for Emre Can looking at that! He looks a liability at the best of times when he plays CB, the last thing he needs is no fullback beside him...

He needs to play in midfield, his best position.

I know. I think everyone's just trying to make a team to fit in Henderson Can Milner with a defensive midfielder on top. Milner may have to play wide. And yes, Can needs to be in midfield. 100%.

Ah, fair enough. Yeah Milner and Coutinho in the wide roles of a 4-3-3 is what looks best suited imo. Can, Henderson and another in the middle?

I'm a big fan of Emre Can, remember posting on here what a good signing I thought it was at the time. Felt sorry for him at times last season at RCB though, he needs a midfield role so he can surge forward with the ball.

I think that would make sense. Henderson and Can either side of a defensive midfielder but BR hardly ever uses a DM so hopefully he sees some sense and realises it's a must. Someone like Kyrchowiak or Guilavogui would be brilliant. Even Wanyama.

And Emre is quality, BR has wasted him in defence. Probably our most comfortable midfielder on the ball.

Don't understand why Liverpool haven't been linked with Gianelli Imbula tbh. His move to Valencia has reportedly fallen through, and if rumours are true, he's now close to joining Inter. But he'd be the type of player they need for the holding role, particularly if Lucas leaves or isn't favoured.

Exactly. It's just a case of BR not believing in defensive midfielders. Openly said he doesn't feel the need to play one when he first got the job. The manager of LFC, disregarding the most important position in the team ðŸ™

You know it's bad when you begin lurking the dead zone in off Season.

Man I can't wait to find the next addictive pursuit and move on 😀

3-3 Chile v Mexico after 66 mins. After the earlier 3-3 I feel this is karmic payback for sitting through Ireland v England last week.

I don't think I've ever seen a game of football with so little play in the middle third of the pitch. Truly end-to-end.

    Serbia U21 squad

    Likely XI.

    ----------------------------------Dmitrovic (5.0)
    --Petrovic (c) (5.0)-------Pantic (5.0)---------Spajic (5.0)---------Petkovic (3.5)
    -------------------Mijalovic (6.0)-----------------Causic (6.5)
    ---Jojic (7.0)------------------------Duricic (7.5)-------------------Srnic (FWD,7.0)
    ---------------------------------------Pesic(7.5)

    Major points.
    * Extremely weakened squad with Nastasic, Mitrovic, Markovic out of squad, and also Kostic left out due to his club's wishes.
    * CB pairing untested, Petkovic at 3.5 is nailed on (bargain?)
    * Only one worth considering from the midfield is Jojic, on set-pieces with most of the stalwarts out. Srnic has had a good season as well, not too much around the XI though.
    * DO NOT touch the striker - could rotate with Milunovic, though both have had abysmal seasons.

So Petkovic and Jojic aside, the team you can mostly ignore.

Newacstle United manager Steve McClaren wants to take Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard to St James Park on loan reports Daily Fail.

I think McClaren had them on loan at Derby as well last year and from what I've seen of him he can score goals. Could be good for Newcastle. Even though it's Daily Fail.

    Oh and morning lads.

        Not bad, yourself?

Wow, it really is dead on here.

He's a good player from what I have seen. Saw him play in the pre-season last time for United and he was brilliant. Haven't seen him play for Derby though. He is a good goal scorer. Exactly what Newcastle needs.

          Good thanks mate.

Yes indeed it is, although I think the U21 tournament has pepped it up a little. I'm not doing it U21 Fantasy though, enjoying the break and can't be bothered researching U21 players when I have exams coming up!

Sounds like a decent prospect then, it would be interesting to see how he would go FPL wise if he made the move

Yeah, I was thinking of taking a break as well. But made a team just for the fun of it. What exams are those? Good luck with them.

I really like the lad and want at him United long term, so really wish he succeeds where ever he goes on loan.

And to think they are offering United only 13m for De Gea which is ridiculous. They want to take advantage of the situation but anything below 30m and United should refuse to sell. Even if that means losing him for free next year.

De gear should be brought to the Ethiad and whipped if he keeps this up!
United were good to him in his early fumbling days, I know locality means nothing both ways these days but I do feel United in this case went the extra mile and stood by David.
