Following the capture of centre-back Philipp Wollscheid and goalkeeper Jakob Haugaard, Stoke City announced the signing of Hannover 96 striker Joselu in an €8 million deal as Stoke City’s rebuilding programme picked up pace.

Discussing his new acquisition with the club’s official website, Potters boss Mark Hughes feels that the former Spain U21 international – who’d been on Stoke’s radar for a while – adds an extra dynamic to his squad:

“Joselu has an excellent pedigree and is a player we have been tracking for some time. He has skills and attributes that are different to what we already have within the squad but will complement the attacking players we already have at our disposal. Joselu is excited about testing himself in the Premier League and we’re delighted to have him with us.”

The History

The Stuttgart-born Joselu was brought up in Spain and cut his teeth at Celta Vigo’s youth academy. Having scored three goals in 21 appearances for the B side, he made two cameos for the senior squad in the 2008/09 Segunda Division campaign.

Real Madrid were impressed enough to offer Joselu a contract that summer, before loaning him back to Celta Vigo for the following campaign – which harvested just four goals in 24 appearances. Joselu then spent two seasons playing for Real’s reserve outfit, notching 40 times in 72 league outings, though in his only appearance for the first team, he netted in a 5-1 Copa del Rey win over SD Ponferradina.

Joselu’s prolific record at the reserve level encouraged Bundesliga side Hoffenheim to snap him up in the summer of 2012. A return of just five goals and two assists in the 2012/13 season prompted a loan switch to Eintracht Frankfurt, where he went on to record 14 strikes and three assists in all competitions. A move to Hannover 96 followed, with Joselu serving up eight goals and four assists in the last Bundesliga campaign.

The Prospects

Standing at 6ft 3in tall and boasting target-man credentials (he won 54% of his aerial duels and netted two headed goals last term), Joselu looks poised to assume the lone striker role in Hughes’ favoured 4-2-3-1 set-up. Given that Peter Crouch underwent groin surgery in late May, the Potters’ latest acquisition has been afforded a great opportunity to immediately cement a starting berth.

That being said, Hughes might be tempted to retain Mame Biram Diouf up top given how well he performed in the final quarter of the 2014/15 campaign. The Senegalese marksman notched four goals in six matches upon being handed a central berth, bagging a brace against Liverpool in a 6-1 trouncing on the final day of the season, though his pace and versatility could see him shifted onto the flank to accommodate the new boy.

Bojan Krkic’s much-awaited return from injury also influences how we evaluate Joselu’s prospects. Although not strictly a threat to his position (Bojan scored all four of his goals playing in “the hole” behind a central striker) his creative influence on the pitch would surely enhance Joselu’s goal threat. Among those forwards that clocked more than 500 minutes last season, only Bobby Zamora (one every 48.3 minutes) crafted chances at a faster rate than Bojan (48.3). Furthermore, if Bojan can rediscover the form (four strikes in 11 starts) he displayed before succumbing to a cruciate knee ligament injury, the budget frontman – who may yet be fit in time for Stoke’s season opener on 9 August – could well be the prime pick among their forward line.

Certainly, there’d be no surprise if Bojan came in at 5.5 again in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, whereas Joselu – as a more advanced option – is likely to be handed a price tag of around 6.5.

All things considered, any interest in Joselu as an early-season differential is tempered somewhat by the Potters’ schedule.

Visitors Liverpool will surely be out for revenge in Gameweek 1 following the above-mentioned humbling, while a trip to Tottenham awaits Hughes’ troops the weekend after. A Carrow Road clash with newly-promoted Norwich City and a home meeting with West Bromwich Albion provide some respite, before a visit to Arsenal in Gameweek 5 caps off an unforgiving quintet of fixtures. Considering that their schedule turns kinder from Gameweek 6 (LEI, BOU, avl, swa, WAT, new), Fantasy managers seem likely to hold back on Stoke coverage during the initial stages, allowing time to assess Joselu’s impact.

All to play for in group A:

    1 Germany 4
    2 Denmark 3
    3 Czech Republic 3
    4 Serbia 1

    Germ vs Cheq rep
    Den vs Serbia

Makes risk rotation less likely I would think.

England beating Sweden tonight will through Group B wife open as well.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Do any of your family also play Fantasy Football? Do you have a strong rivalry with them? Any Fantasy Football couples?

I thought I'd ask this on Father's Day as in one of my mini league's a friend
of mine and his teenage son have a strong rivalry- finishing third and fourth in the league this season.

My younger son and I always get together on the last day of the season to watch the matches and agonise over our teams' relative peformances. For the last two it has been single figures between us.before the matches. My younger son is 31, btw.

Oh aye. Me and my youngest son and my brother have a right old good time with it. I've never bothered about OR, just our rivalry. It's the only way to go.

Sadly my middle son made a bllx of his one and only season so doesn't bother anymore...but I'm working on him.

I've played against my brothers since the beginning. Michael Owen's debut at the end of one season gave me an advantage at the start of the next.

I play with my Dad, my brother and my fiancé (in a league with other friends). But turning into an FFS nerd has kinda ruined the rivalry.

Yeah. I've wrote a few times about that. The pursuit of a good OR can be detrimental to the family game.
Here's the main two differences for me
With a family league it is best played by diffs for the banter..even if that means forgoing some top picks
A healthy lead of say 30pts is a good time to take a hit or three...it maintains a "close" game and it's actually quite nice to change your team if the lead affords it.

They'd get annoyed with me if I was doing that though, as if I was letting them win. It's difficult!

            10 years, 5 months ago

I don't do it to let anybody win. I like the league to be close for the excitement but I also like changing my team a lot anyway Far more than I could if I was concerned with OR.
My son is also of the same mindset so it's all fine and dandy.

I've played against my brother since the 06/07 season. He's a major casual though so I crushed him this season. My girlfriend made a team midseason and actually ran make pretty close for a while (until she didn't captain Aguero in THAT match). Should be a good battle next time out.

Just as a side note - FPL has as much chance of bringing family members together in the name of harmless, collective enjoyment as it does of driving competitive wedges between siblings, parents and partners alike. I also wonder how many couples have cited their other half 'spending more time with that Mark, Granville and Jonty lot' as sufficient reasoning to file for divorce.

Asier Illarramendi is a player Marca believe Liverpool want to secure as a matter of priority. The Spanish paper report that a £15.7m bid has been placed for the Real Madrid midfielder.

The decision now lies in the hands of Rafa Benítez. If he rubber stamps the deal then Liverpool's transfer recruitment drive could be soon set to continue.

Manchester City have offered £57 m to sign Paul Pogba, according to Gazetta dello Sport. Pogba has been heavily linked with a move away from Juventus.

The paper reports his agent Mino Raiola met with Juve but it is believed this offer will be rejected City set to be told they need to bid £71.5m to get the deal done.

If Felipe Luis departs, as has been rumoured, could Azpi provide a more affordable route into the Chelsea defence without the uncertainty of last season?

Yes and he's also a BAPS Magnet...but doesn't have the attacking threat of Ivan or header ability of Terry

No this is true, but his price may compensate vs Terry. Ivan remains a special case.

Would Jose allow himself only 1 proper left back option? Azpi nailed on at 6.0 would be super, but they may be spreading themselves a bit thin to only have Zouma as cover across the whole back 4. If he goes, they'll be very exposed if only Ake is back up.

      1. Lucy.

I presume he'd get in extra cover but perhaps something less high profile, less expensive? Or a youngster?

Yeah, I'd expect maybe he'd get an experienced guy who'd be happy to cover at both left or right back, or put faith in a youngster. They currently have very few experienced options at the back, considering Jose likes 2 players per position. Ivanovic only has Azpi for cover, for example.

For those who believe in cheap defenders at the start of the season, going without Chelsea, what is the most you'd spend on a defender? And who would you be looking at as your most premium defender?

I can't see past getting Chelsea at the moment so I'm interested in different points of view.

I think Cresswell may be £6m this season.

Even at £5.5m the price of other big hitters we'll want in our teams may make Cresswell a luxury rather than a necessity.

You'd probably want to rotate Cresswell with WHU's away fixtures though?

I'm planning on this rotation for the first 8 between West Ham and Bournmouth: AVL LEI BOR LEI NEW SUN NOR WAT.

Try to find the cheapest nailed defender I can from both teams. Best case scenario 4.5 and 4, at worst 5 and 4.5. Hoping given West Ham's pretty average defensive season and his injuries last year someone like Reid could be 4.5, maybe a tad optimistic though.

Sorry that was poorly written; I meant I wouldn't get Cresswell in for 5.5, not paying that for rotation. Cheaper WHU defender though, sure.

Your home games are to good to ignore in my opinion given how they dovetail in the above rotation! From experience (Newcastle fan), EL only starts to hurt after a a while, should be ok at home with that start!

It'd be dangerous to start without a guy that you couldn't play every single week. If you don't have one big hitter, you may as well go with 5 lots of 5/4.5 options. I like the security of one guy week in, week out, and another at 5.5 to play 75% of the time.

Southampton 5.5, Naughton, PVA, Fuchs, 4.0

    Aguero, Costa, Sakho

    Maybe slightly over?

      4.5, 4.5

      9, 9.5, 8, 5.5, 4.5
      12.5, 11, 6

      9, 23.5, 36.5, 29.5 = 98.5 with 1.5 ITB

I was reading that Bilic wants to bring Ba with him. I kind of hope they don't get Austin because of the Europa league. I'd only have Sakho in as a short term punt but I think 7m would be an ok price for him especially for his first 2 home games, Leicester and Bournemouth

Manchester United are nearing a £7.5million deal for Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, according to The Sunday People.

Schweinsteiger – who will be 31 in August – only has a year left on his deal with Bundesliga champions Bayern. The German is tempted to link-up with Van Gaal, who has managed him before between 2009 and 2011.

There's no reports in Germany to suggest that this is actually happening but you can't rule out the possibility I suppose.

He never got on with Van Gaal so why would he sign for him?

So now Ronaldo , Benzema , Bale and Ramos want to go to Manchester . Maybe they should just save time and sign the entire team ?

Full-backs vs Centre-backs, which do you prefer from a fantasy perspective?

Centre Backs from team who don't have attacking full backs...

Depends on the player but generally CBs since they often have more threat and do better with baps.

I'd agree with this but there are certain exceptions. I tend to see Full-backs at a slightly cheaper price and like to skimper with my backline.
