On June 26, West Ham announced the capture of French attacking midfielder Dimitri Payet, as the newly-installed Slaven Bilic set about moulding the team in his image following his appointment in East London.

Speaking to the Hammers’ official site, Ligue 1’s highest assist-maker last term revealed that Bilic’s intention to play an attacking brand of football next season was a prime reason for him joining:

“West Ham really showed me that they wanted me to come, both the joint-chairmen and the manager. Firstly I spoke with the manager, who really wished for me to come here and had been watching me a lot. He made it clear that he wanted me to sign and that too was important in my choice. I’m an attacking footballer so for sure I like attacking football and that they’re counting on me to help achieve that gives me a sense of responsibility. The fact that I’m here is also down to that. It’s true that it’s taken a little while but that’s normal, negotiations are like that. But now that it’s done, I’m very happy.”

The History

Born on the French island of Reunion, Payet spent four years in the youth set-ups at a couple of local clubs (Saint-Philippe and Saint-Pierroise). A move to the mainland with Ligue 2 outfit Le Havre then followed, where he trained for four years before plotting a course back to Reunion with AS Excelsior. Just one season after joining the club from Saint-Joseph, Payet signed with Ligue 1 side Nantes on an amateur contract.

After netting six goals in 22 matches for the reserves, Payet earned his first appearance for the senior team in December of the 2004/05 Ligue 1 campaign. The Saint-Pierre native established himself as a regular starter in the 2005/06 season by virtue of his goal scoring cameos at the start of the term, going on to record four strikes and three assists in 30 league outings.

Nantes’ relegation that season prompted Payet to hand in a transfer request, which ultimately resulted in a move to top-flight outfit Saint-Etienne. He failed to register a single goal in his first season for Les Verts but did manage to chalk up six assists. The subsequent two campaigns were more profitable – harvesting six goals and 14 assists across 65 league appearances – but the 2010/11 season was his best yet, with Payet serving up 13 goals and six assists in 33 appearances.

Payet’s laudable attacking output attracted interest from Ligue 1 champions Lille, who snapped up the gifted technician in a €9 million deal. Payet continued to offer that dual threat in the north of France, with his final season at Lille producing a hugely impressive 12 goals and 18 assists.

Marseille reached a €11 million agreement for the transfer of Payet prior to the 2013/14 season. The France international tallied eight goals and six assists during his debut campaign with Les Phoceens, before notching seven goals and 17 assists in the previous Ligue 1 season.

Since 2010, Payet has tallied 15 appearances for France’s senior side. His only goal arrived on June 7 this year in a 4-3 friendly defeat to Belgium.

The Prospects

Payet’s potential to be a creative powerhouse in West Ham’s midfield is manifest from his incredible statistics in the previous Ligue 1 campaign. Aside from topping the assists charts (17) by some margin, the Marseille man executed more successful through balls than any player in the top five European leagues, apart from the inimitable Lionel Messi.

Furthermore, Payet completed a staggering 133 key passes last season – that’s far superior to Eden Hazard (100), who registered the best tally in the Premier League in 2014/15. His average of 23 minutes per chance created last season bettered Mesut Ozil (27.8), who was the quickest regular in England’s top tier.

Of course, the Ligue 1 doesn’t boast the quality or depth of the Premier League, so it’s not always straightforward for its top performers to replicate that standard in England. Newcastle’s fan base can certainly testify to that notion, having witnessed Remy Cabella – who registered 14 goals and seven assists during his final campaign with Montpellier – struggle to make an impact at St James’ Park, notching just one goal and two assists in 31 league outings.

Nonetheless, the consistency of Payet’s output (51 assists over the previous six Ligue 1 seasons) bodes well for his prospects next season. Given that Payet thrived in the role in “the hole” for Marseille, it looks likely he will tuck in behind a lone striker once again, with Bilic rolling out a 4-2-3-1 formation. Such an eventuality would starve Stewart Downing of the number ten spot he adopted on occasion last season, with reports mounting that the former Villa man could be on his way out of Upton Park, as the likes of Newcastle and Sunderland line up bids. Payet can also be expected to take the majority of set-pieces and corners, given his proficiency from dead-ball situations – this should also be to Downing’s detriment, should he stay at Upton Park.

The new boy’s creativity also boosts the prospects of Diafra Sakho for the upcoming campaign. Sakho suffered from injuries and a lack of form in the second half of 2014/15 yet his average of 184.1 minutes per goal was sandwiched in between Charlie Austin (178.9) and Christian Benteke (192.8), suggesting he could flourish further with Payet’s constant source of creativity tucked in behind him.

Looking at the fixtures, though, Bilic’s side have been handed a relatively favourable opening run. Granted, they face a trio of bruising road clashes (ars, liv, mci) by Gameweek 6 but over the first nine, they are rated third for attacking potential by our season ticker, with four very favourable home ties (LEI, BOU, NEW, NOR) supplemented by trips to Sunderland and Palace.

The Hammers congested pre-season schedule – which could comprise of 13 fixtures (eight competitive, five friendly) if they progress through the myriad qualification rounds of the Europa League – will further influence how we evaluate their early-season prospects.

One might suggest that these extra pre-season run-outs will be an advantage at the start of the campaign, enabling Bilic to greater instill his philosophy and generate some rhythm and match fitness. Certainly, if Payet comes in around the 7.0 – 7.5 mark in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Fantasy managers might well be tempted by the Irons’ new boy as Bilic looks to his number one target to turn on the style in the first season of the post-Allardyce era.

Actually one just have to look at the mac world cup fantasy and we can see how the game would be if all the defensive points are added in

That wasn't too bad from memory - 1 point for every 3 interceptions and 1 point for every 2 balls into the box. Not the worst actually, but would prefer normal FPL rules yes

        Haha yeah would prefer fpl

firstly its a headache trying to keep track of all the interceptions/recovered ball from all of your players.

Secondly it makes the pricing of the players more awkward..from the mac game we always see the defenders outscoring the goal scorers. And more importantly the cheaper defenders might get more points than the premium. It would change the entire price system imo. Like how the mac game where thiago silva priced similarly to a premium striker for eg

Not if its exclusive to mids, the attacking ones rarely would benefit from it much, the problem would only lie in the strong CMs.

(reposted reply to Smeggs11 from last page)

I wouldn't say I didn't enjoy it but it did feel very much like we were gaming the scoring rules to do well.

The big point-scorers were still dominated by hat-tricks and braces but good defenders usually trumped single-goalscorers, even if they didn't get a clean sheet. The biggest problem is that RBs were much more predictable than goals and there was no incentive to gamble on getting goal-scorers because you knew you could get the same (or better) points by getting a defender or DM.

It all illustrates that the point-scoring needs to be exquisitely balanced to provide enough incentive to gamble. Done right, you can choose between stable security or explosive returns. But that sounds very, very difficult to balance properly and a whole season could be written off for 3.5m players if it goes wrong.

They organised a World Cup game last summer which basically consisted of 5-a-side teams where it went on h2h results, so the GK of one team played the ST of the opposition, etc.

This would be an extra level though 🙂

            That's cool, too!

I think the Ryder Cup style competition would be a great way of making things varied. What would be the equivalent of foursomes and fourballs, do you think?

Fourballs - best score from the two managers? Or if someone is feeling super ambitious with the scoring system it could be best combined XI fitting into a legal formation. That would be great!

Foursomes - maybe a bit trickier. Could just make it combined scores of the two managers but that feels a little unsatisfactory...

Yeah, I thought that too about foursomes... Maybe that's why no one's tried it. I guess combined scores wouldn't be too terrible.

I don't think we should have to work the solution - we've come up with a dynamite idea, it's up to other people to make it happen now!

I might make it happen if I can come up with a decent foursomes equivalent and con some unsuspecting victim into co-organising it with me. Hopefully no one has seen this so will have no idea when I trap them 😀

What if there are two sets of four players.

After the matches are over, we rank players of both sets in decreasing order (most points to least). After that, 1st ranked players from both teams are compared, 2nd with 2nd of other team and so on.

Just something I could think on top of my head

                        http://www.rydercup.com/usa/news/ryder-cup-how-matches-and-formats-work

So maybe two teams of 12 FPL players (Europe vs USA). I'd think it would probably be over 5GWs, probably, to account for the 5 sessions. Each team of 12 would need a 'captain' (manager) for player selection and deciding the order they play.

Using the analogies that Windy and I suggested above, maybe something like:

1st GW - First set of fourball - Four matches of pairs from each team.
2nd GW - First set of foursomes
3rd GW - Second set of fourball
4th GW - Second set of foursomes
5th GW - All play traditional singles, in a H2H FPL style.

Is that in any way helpful? 🙂 It could be terrible. You're much more skilled at these things.

Yeah, I agree with your scheduling. There's certainly a bit of flexibility on that front anyway. Foursomes are a bit of a problem (can always think on that for a few days and see if any bright ideas come to mind). Also, 24 people isn't very many considering how big FFS is.

Yeah that's very true. No reason why we couldn't extrapolate to accommodate larger numbers, based on the same structure.

Or even make it a knockout comp with 4 or 8 or 16 etc teams in a Ryder Cup-like comp.

Plenty of flexibility. Also reminds me that something similar could be done based on the Tennis, although that doesn't include the much coveted team competition.

Yeah I liked the Ryder Cup idea because it had variety. If you're thinking along tennis lines, we could do something based on the Davis Cup to give it a team element.

No, no, this wouldn't be instead of your Ryder Cup idea, I was just thinking out loud (or on screen, if you will). Davis Cup is certainly a good idea, tennis just came to me as I'm watching Wimbledon.

Besides, before that can happen I need to recruit some new FFS UEFA people as with ENR stepping down, TW awol at college etc it's only myself left...

Cheapest bundle I can find is £188 for the console + Mario Kart 8. Can get the rest of the games for about £110 maybe for new, but will have a look at how much I save by getting them used.

£300 at most though in total with pretty much all the games I'll want to play for it is pretty decent.

Uncertain for now.....if I continue with my current job and just change office I will have to commute to Staines so I may live somewhere near Waterloo (Bermondsey, Elephant & Castle, etc.) whereas if I get a new job in Central London I'll live closer to Dalston or something along those lines. Still many question marks! Where abouts do you live?

That would do it but it seems vanishingly unlikely to me. A (C) punt like Lucy suggests? Maybe P Oliveira (C). A goal, CS and assist from him seems more likely than a Swedish shock.

        True.
But look at what happened to Z Germans?

Even a Captain punt like Figueiredo or Oliveira would not cover 23 pts…
I prefer to go for it.

The problem is that i see 1 or 2 in front of us that will go the same rout.

Possibly. I think, actually, our goals are different. Tragic but I'm happy with a high rank, don't imagine I can really win.

I can totally understand if you see it as a totally meaningless competition so a non-1 rank is pointless!

            Yeap.
We have 17 Portuguese in top 30.
It will be very difficult to overtake them.

Why not try an go for the prize?

PS: this only applies with no money-league to win, of course.

It sounds very sad but I'm aiming for a top 50 finish because that would mean a top 50 finish in my last three international tournaments. That would make up for my consistent failure at FPL 😆

A little punt on a captain (Joao Mario) might possibly help me into the top 10 but I'd rather stay top 50 than gamble on a very unlikely win.

              Tragic, yes? 😆

I worry that Chelsea are going to just dominate FPL again next season and it will be essential to own at least two, if not three of their assets. All the other bigger teams are adding to their squads and I can see rotation rife from the off.

Are people going to risk drafting in such rotation risks as Mata/Depay/Ramsey/Theo when there are cheaper, guaranteed starters at other clubs?

I don't see Utd offering anything from the start, or Arsenal. Sanchez will need a break and who else is sure to start? Ozil perhaps but that's probably it. Let's not forget Wilshire as well, who finished season flying. They can't all start.

City might be a better bet granted. But only if they play 4-2-3-1 and stop with the farce of 4-4-2! I'll be keeping an eye on Toure's price. If he's anywhere near 9 I'll be very interested.

I'd love to share the optimism, and while I'm very excited about Schneiderlin, that won't negate the strength of the other teams next season. All the teams are going to improve, so United have a lot of work to do

We've insisted he's not for sale (not that that means much). He's just been vital for us and it would be foolish to let him leave unless there was a crazy bid, it reminds me of everyone saying Baines would leave every summer. Maybe I'm being hopeful.

Only thing going for United regarding Coleman was Everton's poor season. I'm not saying he won't move, but it's a long long way from being remotely likely as of now. United haven't actually even made their bid yet.

Yes understand... What I don't understand is why Utd didn't put up a fight for Clyne. At the very least it would've gotten SOT a few extra quid from Pool.

Depends what the club is after, I guess. As far as I'm aware (I've been fairly out of the loop though) Clyne is very good mates with a number of the Liverpool team, most logical move for him if that's the case.

Premier league Predictions based on current and potential summer activity:

    Best Signing ever: Firmino
    Best free transfer: Milner
Best signing of a player in the last year of their contract: Clyne
Best value for money signing: Ings
Best signing of a player that will emulate Rio Ferdinand at his peak: Gomez
Best signing of a ginger persuasion: Bogdan

But the original link of Firmino to United was for about 15 million, right? Money talked in that instance because Pool doubled that. In a situation like Lacazette, most teams would have him, everyone would meet their asking price at the very least. Though I should say I'm not sure Lyon would let him go that cheap at all.

Anyway, they were getting bids at height of £40M, and asking twice as much. Why would they all of the sudden ask less than that? Makes no sense. The source is a bad one in any case. Just went through the French press online and they have no news on Lacazette moving whatsoever.

They're in middle of negotiating a new contract and it seems difficult, but he's got 3 years left in his old contract, so there should be no hurry to sell him for that.

In addition, they just like one or two days ago added a new striker, Beauvue, whose friendship played a big part in that transfer as he preferred to play with his friend Lacazette rather than going to another club for more money.

Question: why exactly would they have lowered the asked fee when the problem with the transfers has not been in them receiving bids higher than the sum you mention but in them not wanting to sell the player and the player not wanting to move?

Palace get 20% paid to them from the sale of Clyne (12.5m to Liverpool).

I didn't know they had a sell on fee. Seems to be the case with a few players nowadays.

Common with young players, I think. We had a lovely sell-on clause with Bale when he went to Spurs which we had to sell off prematurely because of our financial problems 🙁

Yep, it's perfect for young players with high potential. The buying club can get a lower initial fee, to compensate for the possibility they might not be as good as they thought, while the selling club gets the nice possibility of a future big earner if they do make it big.

To think that with 20% of £80M you could have bought Balotelli..

Is there a way to get an alert/notification on my android phone whenever Cech uses his official twitter account to say "Hello Gooners!" ?

Getting tired of stalking twitter every now and then.
