On June 26, West Ham announced the capture of French attacking midfielder Dimitri Payet, as the newly-installed Slaven Bilic set about moulding the team in his image following his appointment in East London.

Speaking to the Hammers’ official site, Ligue 1’s highest assist-maker last term revealed that Bilic’s intention to play an attacking brand of football next season was a prime reason for him joining:

“West Ham really showed me that they wanted me to come, both the joint-chairmen and the manager. Firstly I spoke with the manager, who really wished for me to come here and had been watching me a lot. He made it clear that he wanted me to sign and that too was important in my choice. I’m an attacking footballer so for sure I like attacking football and that they’re counting on me to help achieve that gives me a sense of responsibility. The fact that I’m here is also down to that. It’s true that it’s taken a little while but that’s normal, negotiations are like that. But now that it’s done, I’m very happy.”

The History

Born on the French island of Reunion, Payet spent four years in the youth set-ups at a couple of local clubs (Saint-Philippe and Saint-Pierroise). A move to the mainland with Ligue 2 outfit Le Havre then followed, where he trained for four years before plotting a course back to Reunion with AS Excelsior. Just one season after joining the club from Saint-Joseph, Payet signed with Ligue 1 side Nantes on an amateur contract.

After netting six goals in 22 matches for the reserves, Payet earned his first appearance for the senior team in December of the 2004/05 Ligue 1 campaign. The Saint-Pierre native established himself as a regular starter in the 2005/06 season by virtue of his goal scoring cameos at the start of the term, going on to record four strikes and three assists in 30 league outings.

Nantes’ relegation that season prompted Payet to hand in a transfer request, which ultimately resulted in a move to top-flight outfit Saint-Etienne. He failed to register a single goal in his first season for Les Verts but did manage to chalk up six assists. The subsequent two campaigns were more profitable – harvesting six goals and 14 assists across 65 league appearances – but the 2010/11 season was his best yet, with Payet serving up 13 goals and six assists in 33 appearances.

Payet’s laudable attacking output attracted interest from Ligue 1 champions Lille, who snapped up the gifted technician in a €9 million deal. Payet continued to offer that dual threat in the north of France, with his final season at Lille producing a hugely impressive 12 goals and 18 assists.

Marseille reached a €11 million agreement for the transfer of Payet prior to the 2013/14 season. The France international tallied eight goals and six assists during his debut campaign with Les Phoceens, before notching seven goals and 17 assists in the previous Ligue 1 season.

Since 2010, Payet has tallied 15 appearances for France’s senior side. His only goal arrived on June 7 this year in a 4-3 friendly defeat to Belgium.

The Prospects

Payet’s potential to be a creative powerhouse in West Ham’s midfield is manifest from his incredible statistics in the previous Ligue 1 campaign. Aside from topping the assists charts (17) by some margin, the Marseille man executed more successful through balls than any player in the top five European leagues, apart from the inimitable Lionel Messi.

Furthermore, Payet completed a staggering 133 key passes last season – that’s far superior to Eden Hazard (100), who registered the best tally in the Premier League in 2014/15. His average of 23 minutes per chance created last season bettered Mesut Ozil (27.8), who was the quickest regular in England’s top tier.

Of course, the Ligue 1 doesn’t boast the quality or depth of the Premier League, so it’s not always straightforward for its top performers to replicate that standard in England. Newcastle’s fan base can certainly testify to that notion, having witnessed Remy Cabella – who registered 14 goals and seven assists during his final campaign with Montpellier – struggle to make an impact at St James’ Park, notching just one goal and two assists in 31 league outings.

Nonetheless, the consistency of Payet’s output (51 assists over the previous six Ligue 1 seasons) bodes well for his prospects next season. Given that Payet thrived in the role in “the hole” for Marseille, it looks likely he will tuck in behind a lone striker once again, with Bilic rolling out a 4-2-3-1 formation. Such an eventuality would starve Stewart Downing of the number ten spot he adopted on occasion last season, with reports mounting that the former Villa man could be on his way out of Upton Park, as the likes of Newcastle and Sunderland line up bids. Payet can also be expected to take the majority of set-pieces and corners, given his proficiency from dead-ball situations – this should also be to Downing’s detriment, should he stay at Upton Park.

The new boy’s creativity also boosts the prospects of Diafra Sakho for the upcoming campaign. Sakho suffered from injuries and a lack of form in the second half of 2014/15 yet his average of 184.1 minutes per goal was sandwiched in between Charlie Austin (178.9) and Christian Benteke (192.8), suggesting he could flourish further with Payet’s constant source of creativity tucked in behind him.

Looking at the fixtures, though, Bilic’s side have been handed a relatively favourable opening run. Granted, they face a trio of bruising road clashes (ars, liv, mci) by Gameweek 6 but over the first nine, they are rated third for attacking potential by our season ticker, with four very favourable home ties (LEI, BOU, NEW, NOR) supplemented by trips to Sunderland and Palace.

The Hammers congested pre-season schedule – which could comprise of 13 fixtures (eight competitive, five friendly) if they progress through the myriad qualification rounds of the Europa League – will further influence how we evaluate their early-season prospects.

One might suggest that these extra pre-season run-outs will be an advantage at the start of the campaign, enabling Bilic to greater instill his philosophy and generate some rhythm and match fitness. Certainly, if Payet comes in around the 7.0 – 7.5 mark in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Fantasy managers might well be tempted by the Irons’ new boy as Bilic looks to his number one target to turn on the style in the first season of the post-Allardyce era.

@Internal, Bloodborne is amazing, I really really enjoyed it. Was my first Dark Souls style game so wasn't used to the difficulty but got there in the end. Playing Witcher 3 now but hope to get back to Bloodborne for a NG+ as well.

I'm enjoying it, but it is starting to feel repetitive quite quickly. I have been doing a lot of side missions though so maybe I need to get back into the main story.

Yeah will do. Took on too many side quests and been trying to clean up the lower level ones. I really liked the bloody baron storyline. That was the last main one I did.

Bloodborne was amazing, definitely my game of the year.. Couldn't put it down until I finished it.

Can't say the same about Witcher though.. Burnt out on it very quickly and feel like I haven't even scratched the surface with it. The dodgy combat lets it down quite a bit I think and I'm just not that interested in the story.

If you are looking at the top 15 or so players in Defence and Midfield, is it not clear you gett bigger bang for your buck for defenders?
In other words, Ivano at 7.5 is more assured to get points than anyone in his bracket.
Exceptions are there but it is guesswork and maybe better modifying as the season goes on.
So why not have 3 premium defenders, 7.5, 6.0 and 6.0 and sacrificing the mids until a pattern occurs.

Before the grab police get into you, I sort of agree but if that were the case you should probably play 5-2-3 which quite simply is proven to not be profitable.

I think a happy medium can be achieved but they need to be top notch attacking defenders. And defensive goals/assists are more volatile so you'd need to hold he formation for an extended period of time which will be really tough through troubled times.

Midfield still produced a lot of the top 10 point scorers in last and most seasons.

      1. Eze Really?
        • 11 Years
        10 years, 5 months ago

Thanks for that but still 4 3 3 for me and 3 premium players (Aguero, Silva and Haz).
Thinking more of the mid priced Midfield vs top notch defenders.
Taking what you say maybe a gamble on 2 rather than 3.

If you look at it another way though, would you rather have fabregas and say a 4.5 (pva) or Terry and tadic.

It all comes down to picking the right ones.

I think if a great value 5/5.5 defender is available then get him sacrificing some in midfield, if not put it all on the offensive players.

I think the concept of value-over-replacement features here, and says no.

It's basically about not just looking at the points a player can get you, but rather how many points over the cheapest alternative. So you compare Ivan to 4.5m defenders and see what the difference is. For most premium defenders, the points ceiling makes that difference quite small. Whereas spending that money in midfield gets you more points.

I've probably explained it all wrong. I don't claim to either endorse it, or even properly understand it 🙂 Just thought it sounded relevant to your notion.

It would be great if someone with a better grasp of the theory chimed in here ...

What are people's (very early) plans for a Chelsea defender?

I'm gonna try keep my defence relatively cheap in a 5.5 / 5 / 4.5 / 4.5 / 4 type price structure but it is very hard to ignore the reliability/goal threat of Chelsea DF.

Last year I went with three solid defenders - Chelsea, West Ham and can't remember the other. And used my other two to fill in when they had really tough games.

This year I'm going to go a lot cheaper at the back. Mainly 4.5's, a 5.0 if he represents really good value and the most expensive I'll get is a WBA defender.

Do you think he's a viable option at 7.5 with so many good attacking options and just 100m at the start? Surely later everyone will have a Chelsea DF but are they not too expensive to start with?

Ivan, if anything CHE tighten up in more difficult games, and with the uncertainty over Arsenal/Man Utd's midfields feel worth the £7.5

Very early plan is Ivan, WHU/BOR rotation, WBA with NOR (slot in nicely for WBA top 4 games).

Definitely going with a Chelsea defender. Fixtures should not sway people towards a different opinion. A great post by Giggs Boson the other day showed how Chelsea actually managed more clean sheets against top opposition than the bottom four. They tend to close shop against the top sides. Ivan or Terry for me.

Chelsea are determined to test Everton's resolve to keep defender John Stones and will make a bid for his services this summer, according to the London Evening Standard.

The 21-year-old, who joined Everton for just £3m from Barnsley in 2013, will not come cheap as the newspaper report that they would want £20m for his signature.

Funny the language they use isnt it. 'Determined to test Everton's resolve', as though they've really put a shift in. This is the first i've heard of their interest.

That's not a universally shared view btw. No-one knows of course but most people point to mid-July. Could be in 10 days since the season starts earlier, but this week seems unlikely to most.

I'm not sure what the maintenance page thing is but I, at least, can still see my full gameweek history from last season. That usually disappears a while before the new season goes live.

Classic clickbait, pretty sure Paul Doyle's an Everton fan as well. It's almost as good as his writing on Maldini:
      http://www.theguardian.com/football/2010/oct/21/greatest-ever-football-team-defenders

"It was his handsomeness, more than his performances, that lead to him being held in higher esteem than more effective peers such as Jürgen Kohler. Maldini was a very good player, not a great player (indeed, at Euro 96 he was made to look a very goofy player by Karel Poborsky, no less). Essentially, Maldini was a dishy Gary Neville. The defensive David Beckham."

      1. Camp No No
        • 12 Years

I have nothing against people making claims that go against the grain of the mainstream, but they should back them up somehow. I'd like to hear how and why Maldini was weaker than, e.g. Kohler, or how he was only equal to Neville. Now it's nothing but his opinion and I have no reason to note that more than anybody else's opinion, so simply by finding an opposite opinion we reach a non-conclusion.

However, he makes a one good point on Sterling: "by giving Sterling the armband along with a contract making him, if necessary, the highest-paid player at the club, Liverpool would have been seen to rise to Sterling’s ballsy challenge and respond with one of their own: you want to play at the Champions League? Then lead the way, comrade."

Under presumption that Sterling is a player of CL quality, that Liverpool essentially should keep or be able to replace with an equal (as this man seems to suppose), this could be a viable strategy. His presumptions rest unfounded, but sometimes big clubs do well to define what Americans call a 'franchise player' around whom to build their team. They just have to make the right pick, and correct themselves soon enough if they realize they made the wrong choice. Anyway, it may be that Liverpool has to either sell Sterling or build the team around him and arguably the latter could be preferable.

        • 11 Years

I feel violated reading his piece. Not only a clickbait - the entire piece is downright ridiculous.

He bring up Balo/Hendo penalty incident and basis his opinion on that for his Hendo is not good enough to lead the way, but purposely forget how Sterling chicken out from taken any responsibility in our Besiktas shootout.

Yup, I don't exactly buy this one either: "Phenomenally skilled, he is also physically and mentally tough beyond his years, single-minded and uncompromising like a warrior, a winner." There's evidence for the opposite, more than a little of that. But it's easy to make points for and against anything if you're extremely selective on your evidence and don't care to set out clear, strict and justified rules for that selection.

        • 12 Years

Hmm... In that "Maldini" article, there are some unfounded points, but some good ones too, and his final selection is class. I would disagree on his Brazilian picks, but they're not entirely unfounded. And it is true that Poborsky did ridicule Maldini 1996. But Poborsky on his good day was, if not a very efficient player, a one able to ridicule any defender.

Sorry lads bit off topic but do we have anyone knowledgeable about Barcelona? 🙂

Trying to find somewhere to stay and not too sure about locations. Las Ramblas seems to be the hot place for tourists but is there somewhere a little cheaper to stay with good metro connections?

We went to Amsterdam last year and were about 10-15 mins away from the centre by metro and it was great to be honest so not bothered about not being right in the centre as long as we can get there easily.

    Any recommendations?

No actual concrete help available from me but I've been to Barcelona a couple of times years ago and my recollection is that the Metro system was excellent and made it very easy to get about so I would be surprised if you couldn't find something to match your requirements. I also remember that the city was absolutely marvelous so I'm bitterly jealous 🙂

I went there in February and didn't need the Metro at all to see everything. It's all pretty walkable, mobility dependent.

I stayed at Monumental, which is right next to the Sagrada Familia and the Torre Agbar, but only a 15 minute walk down to the beach, and 10 into Placa de Catalunya, which is at the top of La Rambla.

Imo, you don't want to stay in Las Ramblas otherwise you'll be paying an arm and a leg per night!

The best metro connections would be places near Plaça Catalunya, Sants or Passeig de Gracia.

        Handy!

So me and the missus are looking at going in August. We will mostly be there for sight seeing, restaurants, bars and I'm hoping to get to the Nou Camp if the tour is good? Additionally they're opening game of the season is the day I'm looking to travel (23rd) so that would be awesome!

Anyway, I'm mainly looking at Expedia but the locations they have to narrow searches don't always match up with Google searches. Here are the options I have:

Ciutat Vella, Eixample, Sant Marti, Sants-Montjuic, Les Corts, Sarria-Sant Gervasi, Barcelona International Airport (BCN), Gracia, Castelldefels, Horta-Guinardo, Barceloneta

        Ideal location:

        Not too pricey
Not in central location but close enough to travel by foot / metro
        Nowhere too rough 🙂
Close to a beach is a plus but not a huge concern.

        Cheers Jaffa!

Sounds good Andy! Weather will be gorgeous then albeit very hot 🙂

          Great things to see:

          La Sagrada Familia
          Parc Guell
Mont Juic (at night is best)
          El Puerto Olimpico (Olympic Port)
Montserrat (quite far but a great trip up the mountains)

          Restaurants

El Tinglado in Puerto Olimpico - they have 2 different types of 'Menu del dia (lunch menu) which gives you A LOT of food; one for 10 euros and one for 20. The first one is enough for 2 people and I'd personally recommend mejiones (mussels) and seafood paella. The second one will give the the same things but more tapas for starters. I'm sure they include a drink and desert as well.

For beaches, Barceloneta is OK but too touristy imo and the water is dirty. If you can hire a car or get a tour bus, go up the coast to places along La Costa Brava (Lloret de Mar, Blanes, Calella are a few of my personal favourites). The water is crystal clear and they are great. Sitges is worth a visit too but again it can get quite busy with tourists. I believe most of them can be accessed by train.

I'd stay in Eixample tbh as you're near the majority of hot spots.

If you want to know anything else about anything Barcelona feel free to pm me or email at jaffaliciousffs@gmail.com. 🙂

I feel like an idiot hoping Petr Cech will fail his medical while Kim Kallstrom passed Arsenal medical check up with flying colors.

Good move for Cech and even more so for Arsenal. A bit lucky they're in London though, that was the deciding factor.

😆 This would almost be true, but Henry came back to Arsenal on loan after having won the CL with Barcelona.

By selling Petr Cech to Arsenal, Chelsea records £11m profit in 15/16 + sees Cech's £5.2m player cost wiped off the books for a £16.2m swing

Based on £11m fee + 3 year deal at £100k pw, Petr Cech will cost Arsenal £8.9m per year on the FFP books.

It's not so much the quality of the keeper we signed, but the fact that we signed this quality from Chelsea and Jose! Arsene knows!
