After numerous weeks of speculation, Chelsea finally announced the season-long loan acquisition of Radamel Falcao from French outfit Monaco last Friday.

Prior to the agreement, Jose Mourinho confirmed he was keen to bring the Colombian to Stamford Bridge in spite of a disastrous temporary spell at Old Trafford last term:

“If I can help Falcao reach his level again, I will do it. It hurts me that people in England think that the real Falcao is the one we saw at Manchester United.”

The History

Born in Santa Marta, Colombia, Falcao started out at second division side Lanceros Boyaca, earning his senior debut for the club at the age of 13. He spent two seasons at the Tunja-based club, netting one goal in eight matches. Falcao then moved to Argentina to sign for top tier outfit River Plate in February 2001.

After being handed his first start for the full squad in in the 2005/06 season, Falcao went on to notch seven goals in 11 appearances. Ligament damage to Falcao’s right knee restricted him to just 20 league appearances (1033 minutes) in the following campaign, yet the clinical Colombian recovered to chalk up 24 league goals and five assists across the subsequent two campaigns.

Falcao then plotted a course to Europe, penning a deal with Porto for a €4 million fee. He finished his first season at the Dragons as the league’s second-highest scorer, registering 25 goals and seven assists in 28 league outings. The next campaign proved to be similarly profitable, as Falcao tallied 16 goals and four assists in 22 league outings while also setting a new record for goals (17) in the Europa League.

Atletico Madrid paid €40 million to sign Falcao in the summer of 2011, making him the club’s record transfer. He enjoyed two hugely successful campaigns with Rojiblancos, recording 52 goals and five assists in 68 outings, and scooping two trophies (Europa League and Copa del Rey).

Falcao chose to sign for Monaco in May 2013, yet his debut season in Ligue 1 was hamstrung by thigh and knee injuries, meaning he only mustered nine goals in 17 league outings. After sitting out six months of action with a knee complaint, Falcao played in the first three fixtures of the 2014/15 campaign, before Manchester United snapped him up on a £6 million loan deal. He struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford, bagging four goals and five assists in 26 appearances (14 starts).

On the international stage, Falcao has registered 25 goals in 61 appearances and recently became his country’s highest-ever scorer after netting in a friendly against Costa Rica last month.

The Prospects

Given that Mourinho started every league match last season with a 4-2-3-1 formation, it’s fair to say that the Blues’ new striker faces a tough task to nail down a regular role over the campaign ahead.

Clearly, Diego Costa – who finished third in the scoring charts (20 goals) despite his injury travails – will remain as the first-choice frontman, limiting Falcao’s opportunities. Nonetheless, Costa’s ongoing hamstring issues and penchant for incurring the referee’s wrath is an issue that his manager has to address.

Costa started just 24 league outings last term (missing eight matches through injury and four through suspension) allowed Didier Drogba and Loic Remy to earn eight and six league starts respectively. With Drogba now gone, it’s no surprise that Mourinho delved into the market to acquire a quality back-up in his pursuit of consecutive titles.

With the likes of Palace and West Ham linked with a move for Remy, Mourinho’s shopping spree could well continue, with the Blues reportedly keen on Charlie Austin as a replacement should the Frenchman depart. Either way, it seems likely that Falcao will start the season as Chelsea’s third-choice forward, with minutes off the bench the likeliest scenario over the initial stages, at least.

If Falcao does find some rhythm, it would certainly afford Mourinho the luxury of exercising more caution with Costa’s minutes. Should that be the case, Eden Hazard’s claims as the prime route into Chelsea’s attack would be strengthened further, given that PFA Player of the Year started every league match for the champions in 2014/15.

Although the calibre of Chelsea’s top Fantasy assets renders them almost fixture proof, it’s worth nothing that the London club face a tough start to the new campaign. Beyond a home opener against Swansea City, Mourinho’s troops embark on a challenging road schedule (mci, wba, eve) and a visit from Arsenal within the first six Gameweeks. It’s unlikely to discourage investment in Chelsea’s big-hitters, though, particularly when other high-priced recruits like Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez have question marks against their availability for Gameweek 1 by virtue of their involvement in the final of the Copa America.

They may not start together, but Mourinho often paired Benzema and Higuain when he was chasing games at Real Madrid. So I could easily see Falcao being used as such for Chelsea.

I think we will see 4-4-2 in some games.

I'm not enthusiastic about Falcao because Torres is such a recent memory and the cases seem so similar. But the fact remains that he was probably the best striker in the world (certainly the most sought after) during his time at AM. Mourinho is no fool and if he can get Falcao back to near his best (he's only 29) then the title is done and dusted.

Jose obviously thinks he can do that but that means Falcao being played regularly. I can't imagine Costa being dropped and rests are not good for him, he's the kind of player that needs to play every week. So 4-4-2 (4-1-3-2) for some games looks a possibility. And certainly when chasing games that will happen.

How about this for a front 6 (4-1-3-2):

          ---Falcao Costa---
          Eden Cesc Willian
          --------Matic--------

It's not so far fetched, Chelsea don't need 2 holding or semi-holding mids in every game.

Which heavy hitters are you opting for from the go? Sanchez might be to risky. I'm thinking:

    Ivanovic
    Hazard - Walcott - Silva

The Jury is out and I can understand that thought.
I still like Mourinho's logic though:
He pays 200k a week for a back-up. No more than any top player but without the tfr cost. Like Drogba last year.
Falcao will relish the idea of not playing too many games. Not like Man U who hoped he would be nailed on.
If he comes right then the Chelsea front line will be scary.
He keeps Remy so a double back up choice to an injury risk Costa.
Having said all this, I don't think it worth an article for the FPL.

      1. AK ⭐
        • 13 Years
        10 years, 5 months ago

Is he getting 200k? I thought it was even less..

It's a gamble, but not as big as the one Unietd took on him last season and if we keep Remy, it's actually a pretty good gamble cause in case he really is done, Costa and Remy would still be here and if he fires up, we might just have the best strike-force in the England.

Doubt the contract is that different, facility wise Southampton have one of the best academies in football so I assume they're pretty well equipped, they've risen in league standing every season so their ambition is quite huge imo. But I'll accept the teammates part, that seems a big deal to him which is fine, just disappointed he left the Saints.

it was a very small sample space with Walcott at the end of last season. Giroud was rightfully benched, but Theo did well against a unmotivated West Brom side and a poor Villa side. Giroud is well rested now so it will be interesting to see what happens. The prospect of Theo as a FPL pick has clouded peoples judgement a little IMO

He spent last season on the bench because he was coming back from a big injury. When you haven't kicked a ball for so long, it is very difficult to rekindle any semblance of form.

He wasn't really deserving of any place in the team due to form until the Sunderland game, where he came on and looked really sharp. After that he started up front against West Brom where he scored 4, and the FA cup final.

Combine this with a pacey striker better able to get more out of our midfield, his desire to play up front, Wenger talking about him being in his prime for a striker, and that it why I think he'll be our striker next season.

You could be right but I would want to be 100% sure he will be starting before committing to him. Arsenal attacking positions are going to be a nightmare anyway and Walcott is too much of a risk at the minute imo

You could argue that every team ruin some careers. Spurs have been making bad transfers for the last few years. Going from the likes of Carrick, Berbatov, Modric and Bale transfers to these Paulinho and Soldado transfers is quite a big turn a round in terms of transfer success.

Shame on Toby for going to Spurs

Southampton took the interest in him last year and gave him the opportunity to show his worth, with the chance to continue as part of a team that was thriving and developing. Where were Spurs last year? Surely a defender would want to be part of a team that values defence and can do it well.

Clearly a large wage packet and 6th place every year is more important to some.

You probably would have though. Sometimes have to forget it's football like Doolittle says below. He picked the better job for more money in London - location alone means a lot to some people.

Additionally you say "6th place every year is more important" - what are you thinking Southampton are going to do every year?

But for a team that was in the championship two seasons ago to be maintaining 6th every year thanks to your personal contribution?

That's some feeling of satisfaction, and would surely give you a lot of confidence to improve in the future. Spurs best finish in the last 10 years was 4th and that was with Bale.

I suppose at the end of the day, what's done is done, I'm just a little disappointed he didn't end up with Southampton

But he contributed absolutely nothing to getting them from the Championship (or League One for that matter). They were already an established PL side when he joined them last season, so he can't really take any satisfaction from that.

If you look back to the start of lasts season when Southampton lost:

                  Luke Shaw [Manchester United] £30mil
                  Adam Lallana [Liverpool] £25mil
                  Dejan Lovren [Liverpool] £20mil
                  Calum Chambers [Arsenal] £16mil
                  Ricky Lambert [Liverpool] £4mil
                  Jack Cork [Swansea] £3mil

That's just under £100mil and a hell of a lot of player changes. They spent about £65m of that with a new manager and managed to finish 8th after the competitive spending of the rivals around them on the table. That's phenomenal considering people on here had them in their relegation predictions last July

Exactly, they exceeded all expectations yet still couldn't beat a team that basically totally flopped. Long-term Spurs are far more likely to be competing for 4th than Soton are.

As a Spurs fan I couldn't be happier. He'll slot perfectly into the starting 11. As for development, I think Spurs offer him exactly that opportunity, we have a one of the best training facilities worldwide.

Coupled with the fact that stability seems to be arriving in some form at the club, I think it was a good decision.

It is different when the wage you earn has a very big impact on your life. Toby is a millionaire, and perhaps he'll earn a few grand more a week, but at either club he'd stand to earn millions in a season.

Exactly, he'snot going to be worrying about the mortgage of he stayed at Southampton.

Ultimately my point is, Southampton took him over and helped him realise his potential. They clearly have a defensive philosophy and that should be appealing to a defender like Toby. The wages wouldn't have been THAT much different, and both offer a chance at Europe.

I guess it does come down to money and agents at the end of the day 😕

That's it, it really does and it us also why I'm let down. Spurs are a bigger club, which I understand but I don't think they offer him anything other than Southampton do barring more money and location. Will now await the inevitable uproar when he asks to leave for someone like Arsenal. 😉

One offers practically guaranteed European action, the other nobody knows. Big difference in league stability between the two clubs.

I would love to see Soton maintain a position up amongst the big boys, but it's far from a given.

Yes but Alde isn't like a Scott Sinclair, he's good enough to play for Tottenham, so I see no reason why he wouldn't join a club that will likely finish higher, based in London, for more money.

This somewhat sums up my feeling. The big thing for me is that Southampton have repeatedly improved each year, so it's not as well defined which team has bigger ambition. And I do agree it was Southampton who rescued him for A. Madrid so I'm disappointed he ditched them.

          4 points.

After spending a fortune over the last few years, compared to Southampton who were playing in the championship when Spurs finished 4th with Bale. Not to mention, the same Southampton who lost half of their squad over the last year and saw a manager new to the PL coming in to have to sort that out.

My point is that with the financial superiority and higher finish on the table, I don't think Spurs offer that much more than Sputhampton.

Slightly more wages, but in my opinion, Southampton having a defensive philosophy would strike me as a big factor in deciding where to go.

Financial superiority, wages, higher finish, belgian team mates, former Ajax team mates. Not really surprising. It's a shame as he did so well and was obviously wanted back, but it's more surprising if a player shows loyalty these days than doesn't.

️I would've loved to see him stay at saints also but I don't blame him. A footballers career is short so why not try and make as much money as you can, you're a long time retired. He has some international team mates at Spurs. The training facilities are world class and London I'd imagine is a playground for a young millionaire. The revolving doors are spinning again in Southampton so there is uncertainty if they can again compete, I hope they do!

If you look at FPL from software delivery project perspective..

They've already started the data migrations in production/live environment - injuries, suspensions.
I can't believe their release plan is to do a migration per day - it's just time-wasting from PM point of view. So it would probably be done all at once.
In addition last year launching went without any issues and as far as I remembered it all happened within a day also. They might want to reuse this strategy.

So I think that unless anything goes wrong today, it should go live in the afternoon. 🙂

          Spurs defence price predictions?

Toby should tighten them up. 5.5/6.0? Rose at 5.5?

Toby may help a little. But I'd wait for a central midfield re-haul. Bentaleb and Mason are not the best defensive shields. That's the key to their real defensive improvement imo, stopping the attack before it reached the rearguard.

5m is already too much for a spurs defender. Rose could be on 5.5 but due to attacking threat.

Definitely going to get a Sunderland defender. PvA at 4.5 would be immense.

I am definitely starting with a United attacker. Mata, ADM or Rooney, could be anyone. Chelsea defender cause of their horrible fixtures at the start (which should mean defensive tactics a lot of times), WBA defender and Ritchie. Rest depend on pricing.

Interested as a saints fan to see what Les and Koeman will say about the Toby saga now. I can imagine Koeman will be quiet to the media, but very determined to finish highly this season, as well as slightly disappointed in Toby. And Les? Who knows. They named him as their number 1 target, and bid 20mill so to lose out is a bit of a blow.
