Newcastle can count themselves a little fortunate remain in the Premier League after their decision to part company with Alan Pardew midway through the previous campaign proved disastrous. Having won seven times and earned 26 points in their first 19 fixtures, the Magpies stuttered to safety under the guidance of John Carver, with three victories and 13 points accrued over the remainder of the season.

In this latest article for members, we assess Newcastle’s faltering campaign, running the rule over their squad in terms of goal threat and creativity ahead of the Steve McClaren era.

If we tried to equate the content of everyone's post to the subject matter of the article they were submitted under there would be *zero* hope of understanding the context of anything written 'round here.

Also, nice touch with the patronising remark re: the Ticker. (Zing!)

This might be United's worst transfer window in a while. Darmian is an overrated player who's ten times inferior compared to Fabinho, Coleman, Dani Alves or even Clyne. And plus if they sell ADM they're going to do a big mistake...who they hope to play with on the flank? Januzaj?

You recall when they didn't get Baines & were rebuffed twice for Cesc but, somehow managed to spend 27mil. on Fellaini, right?

Oh, & what about the 37mil. they paid for Mata that Jan. window...

Lil' early now to be calling this the *worst* in a while.

I'd be interested to hear how Darmian is "ten times inferior" to Fabinho personally. 😕

That was a great line. Couldn't be further from the truth.

Mata is class I'd happily have paid 37 mil for him he was coming off two epic seasons at chelsea.. Plus he pretty much destroys lpool everytime we play him he goes super saiyan haha..

Mata was a great offensive player for Chelsea.
But, did Utd really need to spend 37mil. on *another* #10?
(Especially one that wasn't really fast enough to play on the wing either?)

In 13/14 Utd. already had Rooney, RVP & Kagawa (amongst others) to play upfront but, they also had glaring holes in midfield & an aging defense.

So, why they choose to spend their resources (37mil.) on a player who's redundant / not addressing an actual need, then I can't get behind *only* signing Mata that Jan.

    4. Whats the Mata?

Mata, Valencia and Young can play there. Plus I think they'll keep Di Maria.

RvP has agreed a 4 year deal with Fenerbache according to Sky.

Utd are having a serious clear out.

Amos, Cleverley, Janko, Thorpe, Henriquez, Nani and RvP all gone.

De Gea, Rafael, Evans, Hernandez, Powell and James all expected to follow.

Looks like Utd have a long shopping list this summer and they must be confident having let players go early with no cover. (GK, RB, CB, CM and ST all needed)

I truly doubt that a goalkeeper would have a win share (point share) of 3 to 4 matches over a 38-week season.

Lebron James *only* has 16 in an 82 game season & his usage rate is over 30%.

Do you truly feel that a keeper can have that big a statistical impact?

By their efforts alone, they're able to gain 9-12 more points than a replacement value player?

Put it this way, if DDG went to Villa & replaced Guzan would Villa have managed to be 9 to 12 points better than they were & finished 10th in the league?

Or if DDG wasn't at Utd. & just some *avg* keeper played all season for them...
Would Utd. have fallen their 4th place & 70pt finish to only garner 9th place on 58pts just above Stoke?

Its quite simple really. DDG made saves that few keepers in the world could make. Saves that lead to several points for his team. If it was Valdes in his place then i doubt very much that Utd would have won as many points.

Quite simply, you've ducked the matter entirely.

We're not talking *several* pts or if DDG play well last year.

We are talking about 12 points.
4 entire wins, based solely off DDG's contribution.

So, I'll take this as your concession that I am correct here & few if any keepers are worth an extra 12 points to their side.

                    Good day, sir.

              Hi Demi,

Quick question / suggestion for the team sheet master...

During the pre-season there's always a spreadsheet floating around that helps us decipher who started for a team & who only managed a 2nd half appearance.
Helps us better know who's *nailed on*.

So, may we please keep that rolling into the regular season?

I think it'd be great if members could see trends developing in the team sheets.

It'd also be great to see how a team lined up (w/ subs) the week before without having to Google last week's match summary.

Thanks for reading / your consideration sir. 🙂

                Hi O'shaugnessy,

I think i know what you're referring to, but it's not me or any of the contributors who were responsible for that spreadsheet.

A poster called Coutisomething was the creator iirc, can't remember what his full username is. Not sure when he last posted but i think i remember him saying he was going to try and keep it going for this pre-season. You may need to ask him when he's on, as i'm not sure who else monitors that

                  Hey Demi,

                  Thanks for the quick reply.
Also, thanks for the heads up re: the spreadsheet.
It was so helpful last year!

Well, maybe I'll slip Mark a note into the suggestion box because, I think that'd be a great resource to have around here full time.

Prödl was signed on a free after being released by Werder Bremen 😕

Had some injury troubles last season. Missed a large chunk of the season with one particular injury. Very solid defender and leader though. An impressive signing for Watford imo.

don't underestimate fenerbahçe.. we have 25 million fans and great squad. Dirk Kuyt also played for us and he was amazed by the passionate fans. He played a great role for us in signing RVP.

Does the season ticker stay the same the whole season or does it update after GW been played. If (highly unlikely) Man City or Chelsea went on a 10 match losing streak, would their red difficulty start fading to blue? And vice versa if Watford went unbeaten for ages, would they progress from blue to red?
