With a string of pre-season friendlies taking place this weekend, it seemed timely to catch up on all the summer action to this point.

Here’s a match by match breakdown of all the encounters, with details of scorers and lineups.

We’ll be covering all of today’s friendlies in a round-up tomorrow, while all the pre-season results, scout notes and form players are being captured and collated in our dedicated pre-season section.

Gateshead 0 Newcastle United 1

Steve McClaren earned victory in his first outing as Newcastle manager as Papiss Cisse’s first half spot kick proved decisive at Gateshead. Massadio Haidara was the man felled in the box, allowing the Senegalese striker to convert.

The Magpies boss opted to put out a solid first summer lineup, handing debuts to Karl Darlow and Jamaal Lascelles and surrounding them with experienced first teamers. Mike Williamson, Haidara and Daryl Janmaat made up the rest of the Newcastle defence, while McClaren fielded a five-man midfield, anchored by Vurnon Anita and skipper Jack Colback – Moussa Sissoko, Yoan Gouffran and Siem de Jong provided the support for Cisse in attack.

De Jong’s performances will be of particular interest to Fantasy managers this summer after a first season of injury frustration on Tyneside. The Dutchman enjoyed a prosperous pre-season last year, only to be stricken from August until the final few matches of the campaign; De Jong is classified as a 6.5 midfield option in this season’s Fantasy Premier League.

RB Leipzig 5 Southampton 4

Southampton tasted defeat in their first pre-season clash but will be encouraged by the goalscoring return of striker Jay Rodriguez. His brace was the highlight in Fantasy terms, although new signings Juanmi and Cedric Soares also caught the eye with a goal apiece. The latter came off the bench on 69 minutes and also earned an assist to underline his attacking potential: Soares will be expected to claim the right-back berth following Nathaniel Clyne’s departure.

Ronald Koeman’s teamsheet was comprised of those players with some pre-season training behind them, with Maarten Stekelenburg earning a first half debut in goal, while Gaston Ramirez also started the first period following his return to the club after a somewhat patchy loan spell at Hull last season.

Darlington 2 Sunderland 4

Another forgotten winger, Emmanuel Giaccherini, was undoubtedly the star on show in Sunderland’s pre-season opener at Darlington. The Italian crafted two well-taken strikes, including a superb 20-yard effort in the second half.

Dick Advocaat named a strong initial lineup, with the likes of Patrick van Aanholt, Billy Jones, Jermain Defoe, Danny Graham, Lee Cattermole and Adam Johnson handed starts; Graham and second half sub Connor Wickham claimed the Black Cats’ other goals.

St Albans 0 Watford 4

Odio Ighalo made an early claim for a starting berth with two goals as the Hornets eased through their summer opener. Skipper Troy Deeney and substitute Connor Smith added further goals as Quique Sanchez Flores earned his first victory at the Watford helm.

The Spaniard immediately elected to go with a strong lineup for pre-season and, interestingly, utilised a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Gabriele Angella and Craig Cathcart were the centre-backs, with Ikechi Anya and Daniel Pudil at full-back; Anya is listed as a midfield option across the games.

Ben Watson and new singing Etienne Capoue anchored the midfeld in the double pivot, with Fernando Forestieri, Almen Abdi and Ighalo supporting lone striker Deeney.

Capoue earned an assist on his Watford debut, while Giedrius Arlauskis and Sebastian Prodl were also given their first run-outs from the bench.

Post-match, Flores was keen to emphasise that his side will need to show tactical flexibility for the season ahead…

“They are ready to play in a defence of four, a defence of three, a midfield of four or five, and for sure the response of the players has been amazing….I want to create a good block that will be able to move in defence, in midfield, in attack, to take control of the situation in all parts of the pitch.”

Red Bull Salzburg 3 West Brom 1

Tony Pulis side suffered defeat at the hands of the Austrian champions in West Brom’s first pre-season foray.

The Baggies boss named a strong initial lineup, with Craig Dawson, Joleon Lescott, Jonas Olsson forming an experienced back four with new signing James McClean fielded at left-back. Boaz Myhill took his place in goal in the absence of the injured Ben Foster, while Craig Gardner, Darren Fletcher, Claudio Yacob and Calum McManaman formed the midfield. Up top, Victor Anichebe led the line, with Stephane Sessegnon played up in support in a “number 10” role. Pulis made ten alterations on 50 minutes, with youngster Abil Nabi emerging from the bench to grab West Brom’s consolation.

West Ham 3 FC Lusitans 0
FC Lusitans 0 West Ham 1

Slaven Bilic’s side coasted through their first Europa League two-legged qualifier against their Andorran opponents, although the Croatian was not officially in charge for either encounter.

The Hammers opted for a 4-4-2 in both matches, turning to a mix of youth and experience to help them progress. James Tomkins skippered the side, while Morgan Amalfitano, Matt Jarvis and Diafra Sakho also started both fixtures.

Sakho notched twice in the first leg but was sent off within 15 minutes of the return match, with fellow forward Elliot Lee scoring the only goal of that tie. Sakho is now expected to miss the next three European encounters, starting with the second qualifying round first leg against Birkirkara FC on July 16.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      Decent

Too much money tied up in keepers though for me,not sure about this Cedric bloke, don't like the Skrtel pick, I think Silva is overpriced and his form last season represented an anomaly, Milner is a far better player than Henderson, and Mané may be overpriced simply because I think EL will really hurt SOT this season. Not a bit fan of 442 either, gotta be 343 for me

I'm not a fan, sorry. There's too many punts to feel any kind of security. (Kermorgant, Walcott, Henderson, Mane, Gosling, Bassong, Skrtel) You also don't have any attacking coverage from the current Champion's 🙂

'Heydudes13' is just going to go around criticising the presence of Southampton players in people's teams because he wants to wind me up about a pre-season friendly performance.

Cedric is a pretty attacking fullback.

I haven’t seen much talk of Nathan Dyer around here. Is it because of the competition on the wings at Swansea? At 5m doesn't seem like a bad grab. I currently have Redmond as my 5th option.

Word to the wise on Mitrovic, who's signing for Newcastle should be confirmed soon enough:
Don't let his stats fool you (they're pretty darn good), his finishing is atrocious especially for the amount of chances he had ato Anderlecht. The one Stat for him that matters for him is finishing because the guy can't finish his dinner, my friend's an Anderlecht fan and spoke to this
I'm avoiding, can't see him having much success in the prem

I'm surprised by the lack of love for Milner around these parts. Whenever he was on the pitch for Man C he always looked like a threat, and he was massively influential and dangerous whenever he played at CM before joining city. Liverpool have some nice early home fixtures and I think he's completely nailed on - at 7 million i think he's a bargain and the sort of player that you can be sure you won't have to waste a transfer on getting rid of after a few gameweeks

Milner is too average at everything to be 'nailed on'. Liverpool have plenty of competition for midfield places and Rodgers regularly uses different tactics depending on the fixture. He'd only be nailed on in a club that was in the bottom 6/7 in the prem.

Hes very very likely to start nearly all games. Can only assume that was part of the reason he signed. He deserves to be starting for liverpool

He's definitely nailed on mate - wouldn't have signed with them had he not been given assurances about a CM spot plus he's on 150k p/w.

Yes me may play plenty of games, but he is so average and versatile. So you can't guarentee he will get returns. 1 week at CM, 1 week at AM, 1 week at RM, 1 week at LM. No chance to gain consistency. He'll score the odd goal and get the odd assist no doubt. But sooooooo many are better at the same club. Sooo many better in the top 4. So many better that are cheaper in the mid-table teams.

Assurances about a CM spot. Hmm, don't think players have THAT much power unless you are truly world class. Though the way Liverpool do business these days, you might be right - would be to the detriment of the club though.

Chelsea, Saints, Sunderland, Swansea, Bournemouth because they give a decent fixture rotation (in terms of difficulty). Though I've also been tempted by Toby and Lescott so it may change. But broadly 6 5 5 4.5 4.5. I really want to drop down one of the 4.5s to a 4.0 but there aren't really any options 🙁

3 big hitters and 2 4.5's, all of which could be offensive threats. Currently on
      Ivan (starts seasons well)
Kosc (if he can avoid injury)
      Clyne (goal/assist threat)
Francis and Angella (give the new lads a chance)

      but just initial thoughts.

      Ivan Cedric Lescott O'shea Mings
Ivan due to goalscoring and assisting threat coupled with Chelsea's very good defensive record. Cedric because Southampton also have a good clean sheet record and he seems very attacking. West Brom under Pulis are also proving very tight and Lescott was one of his only nailed defenders. Sunderland have decent fixtures and can prove to be quite resilient at the back and finally Mings should be nailed on and seems to be attacking.

Jay Rod is getting a personal love in on here. If he plays with those fixtures he looks a snip, but my concern is still that if. Saints now have four decent forwards on their books supported by a host of attackers. Are people expecting him to play in the Pelle role? Ronald rarely shifted from his 4 2 3 1 and that leaves 8 or 9 very good options to fill those four attacking spots. Given Europe, I think he needs that and has bought well. But from a fantasy perspective it seems strange to see so many people piling on a player who could easily be benched and rotated.

Personally I'll wait and see. There are enough options either side of his price range (lukaku, diouf, sakho) who are still relatively proven and nailed.

Some positive individual displays by #SaintsFC here in Salzburg - such as Cedric, Juanmi & @JasonMcCarthy32 - but some weak areas exposed.

Still a little uncertain on this one so help would be appreciated
    A) Targett and Hendo
    B) 4.5 defender (not sure who) and Cabaye

    {The defenders in this case will act as my 4th defender}

Strange performances from Saints in their 45 minute defeats vs Valencia and then Salzburg. Koeman played two totally different XIs each time, mixing reserves with first teamers and it didn't work. I don't see what was gained but it may be just that he wanted to get minutes under the belt.

We never seized control in either game and the second CB pairing of Gardos and Yoshida looked very ropey, inadequately protected by Gape and Davis and with an experienced LB in Debayo.

Schneiderlin's absence from either XI implies a move to United is imminent.

Juanmi and Mané looked bright. Pellè looked very very rusty. JRod's raw pace was reassuring after his ACL injury.

Nah, that's it. It was 4 teams playing 45 minute games.

            A vs B
            C vs D

Then the winners played each other and the losers played each other.
