Manchester United landed their second major coup of the transfer window last week, snapping up Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger on a three-year deal. The 30-year-old – who will become the first ever German footballer to play for the Red Devils – insisted that United was the only club he’d considered joining:

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Bayern Munich, it has been an incredible journey and I didn’t take the decision to leave lightly. Manchester United is the only club that I would have left Munich for. I feel ready for this new and exciting challenge in what I regard as the most competitive league in the world and I am looking forward to working with Louis van Gaal again. I will never forget my time at Bayern Munich and I would like to thank everyone at the club and the fans for the great memories.”

The History

Born in Bavaria, Schweinsteiger cut his teeth at local clubs FV Oberaudorf and TSV 1860 Rosenheim, before joining Bayern Munich’s youth academy at the age of 13. Having turned out some impressive performances for the reserves in the third tier of German football, he went on to make 14 appearances for the senior side in the 2002/03 season as Bayern claimed the league and cup double.

Schweinsteiger started out at left-back but was quickly shifted into midfield by head coach Ottmar Hitzfeld. Over the course of the next two campaigns, he tallied seven goals and 11 assists in 35 starts, operating predominantly from a left midfield berth in a 4-4-2 diamond set-up. The versatile Schweinsteiger then went on to produce 13 goals and 31 assists in the following four seasons before the appointment of Louis van Gaal in the summer of 2009 saw him assigned a deep-lying defensive midfield role.

The next four years harvested 16 goals and 17 assists in 115 league outings, with his best attacking output coming in the 2012/13 season, where he netted seven times and chipped in with five assists. After Bayern claimed the treble (Bundesliga, German cup and Champions League) in 2013, Schweinsteiger scooped the German Player of the Year award.

In his first season under former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola, Schweinsteiger was limited to 22 starts because of tendon irritation and went on to accrue four goals and five assists. In the subsequent campaign, he managed just 15 starts due to injury, bagging five goals and four assists in the process.

Schweinsteiger has been a stalwart for Germany since his senior debut in 2004 against Hungary. With 111 appearances (23 goals) to his name to date, the 30-year-old midfielder ranks fifth on the list of Germany’s all-time most-capped players. The crowning moment of his international career undoubtedly arrived in the 2014 Brazil World Cup, when he played every minute of the knockout stages en route to the trophy.

The Prospects

Although he’s versatile enough to play in a number of roles across the centre of the park, it seems more likely that Schweinsteiger will be utilised in front of the back-four by Van Gaal once again.

Considering that the Dutchman employed his former charge as an enforcer during his managerial spell at the Allianz Arena, one might expect him to do the same at United. Van Gaal – in an interview with the club’s official site – said that Schweinsteiger’s ability to dictate the rhythm of a match will be vital:

“Bastian is, of course, no stranger to me. I worked with him during my time at Bayern Munich and I am truly delighted he is joining Manchester United. His record speaks for itself; he has won every honour at club level and was a major part of the successful Germany World Cup-winning team last summer. Bastian is the ultimate professional and there is no doubting his talent and his ability to control games. He brings a wealth of experience and is an excellent addition to our squad.”

Michael Carrick excelled as a holding midfielder in the latter stages of the previous season, which might make Van Gaal loath to sideline the former Tottenham recruit. Indeed, United’s switch to 4-1-4-1, set-up upon Carrick’s return from injury in Gameweek 29, sparked an upturn in their performances – the Red Devils subsequently went on a four-match winning streak, beating Liverpool at Anfield and Manchester City at home.

In the event that Carrick retains a starting role, Van Gaal is likely to plump for a 4-3-3 formation, with Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin patrolling the centre of the park. The same formation could see Schweinsteiger adopt that deeper role, with Schneiderlin and Ander Herrera playing further ahead. Given his wealth of options further forward, though, Van Gaal could opt for a 4-2-3-1 set-up, allowing Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin to partner up in the double-pivot.

At 7.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Schweinsteiger looks fairly priced in light of his attacking output last term (five goals and four assists in just 1362 minutes), but Bayern’s complete dominance of their league has to be factored into our assessment. The Bundesliga titans averaged 70% possession and fired 17.4 shots per match, whereas United managed 61% and 13.5 respectively. Furthermore, his injury record over the last two seasons is something of a concern, having started only 37 of 68 league outings.

Although you’d expect Schweinsteiger’s scoring opportunities to be diminished, then, his underlying stats are promising. The German’s conversation rate (17.2%) trumps that of any United midfielder bar Juan Mata (27.3%), while his shot accuracy (38%) is second only to Marouane Fellaini (44.4%) among the Red Devils midfielders that fired off at least ten attempts. With the likes of Mata and Mephis Depay priced at 8.5, and a number of viable attacking contenders such as Nacer Chadli and Jordan Henderson at 7.0, though, it remains to be seen whether Schweinsteiger can force his way into many managers’ plans in the season ahead.

United’s start to the new campaign throws up a couple of tricky home match-ups against Tottenham and Liverpool, yet Van Gaal’s men will fancy their chances after winning both corresponding fixtures 3-0 last term. United’s schedule between Gameweeks 2–4 (avl, NEW, swa), meanwhile, could serve up a wealth of attacking returns if their new signings acclimatise quickly, though whether the German is one of the main benefactors is another matter entirely.

  5. Mids more explosive than forwards?
    The Sarjeant

    10 years, 4 months ago

Which players have been more explosive - the top five forwards or the top five midfielders?

Key: Double Digit Hauls (DDH); Bonus (B); Minutes Played (MINS).

    ..............DDH......B.......MINS
    —————————————
    Aguero.......6......27.......2532
    Kane..........7......32........2581
    Austin........4.......22.......3065
    Costa.........5......18........2069
    Pelle..........4.......14........3281
    Total.........26.....113.....13528
    —————————————
    Hazard.......9......42.......3373
    Sanchez.....8......29.......2944
    Silva...........6......28.......2646
    Cazorla......6.......23.......2990
    Fabregas...4.......26.......2884
    Total.........33.....148.....14837
    —————————————

The top five points scoring midfielders hit a double digit haul 7 more times than the forwards.

Even though the midfielders played more minutes than the forwards, they still have a lower minutes per double digit haul. The midfielders hit a double digit haul every 449 minutes, whilst the forwards got one every 520 minutes, on average.

I also factored in bonus points to see if they have given the midfielders an edge. They received 31% more than the forwards.

Does this mean that the midfielders are more explosive in general? Or is this down to the bonus point system tipping it into the favour of the midfielders? Should we be keeping a closer eye on the midfielders and distributing more funds their way?

*I had already posted this back on the 28th May, but I recently stumbled across the data again that I recorded on my iPad. So I searched the site and managed to find the post again, and thought I'd re-post it now that the games actually launched.

I usually favour captaining a mid over a striker purely because of the extra point for the goal and the extra point for the CS. Its the little things.

I've actually never thought about that until a couple of weeks ago. I never take into account that extra clean sheet point when looking at midfielders. It's not much, but it can help you push up that little bit extra in the rankings.

Aye especially when youre captaining them. Hazard is a great shout pens, Chelsea keep a lot of CSs and he's probably one of the best players in one of the best teams. 11.5 isnt a bad price at all for him imo.

When I can't choose between two midfielders, I need to factor in clean sheets. And I need to concentrate more on goal scoring midfielders. I get tempted a lot by the assisters too!

Nice post. It's all relative though - despite Pelle and Cesc's 4 DDH each, or even Silva's 6 - I wouldn't feel comfortable captaining any of them.

First of all, "explosiveness" is overrated. It is pretty irrelevant except for captains and even then it's arguable whether you'd rather have a fairly safe 6-7 points rather than anything between 2 and 12.

Secondly the predictability of big hauls is likely to be better for strikers and predictability is what counts. If you can't predict the likelihood as being high how can you select it?

Thirdly, most of Sanchez and Cazorla's double digit hauls came between October and January when Ozil, Giroud and Walcott were injured. Sanchez was playing in a 2nd striker role for a lot of that time and Cazorla had a fortuitous run of penalties. Whether either of those circumstances will recur this season is unknown. Slightly different circumstances could lead to a very different outcome.

Fourthly, the numbers are also skewed by the fact that the most explosive forwards played less minutes through injury. We had 2100 minutes of Costa but 3300 minutes of Pelle, for example. Another circumstance that may or may not be repeated next season.

As I have said before, all these statistical/mathematical models are pretty useless unless you can explain WHY things happened. "It happened before so it will happen again" is a crude and primitive assumption unless you can see a sound link between cause and effect (reason and outcome).

Lastly, to use data like this to say "invest more in the midfield" is pretty foolish. Explosiveness can only ever be relevant for (a) captains, and (b) short-term punts. With players you will have for 10 games, say, what matters is how many FPL points they accrue over 10 games, not in any one game.

So, as with quite a few mathematical models that are put up on here, conclusions are drawn which are quite false. The correct conclusion is "try to select the right players at the right times". And this analysis does not help anyone do that.

No. I just try to be rational. 😕

If you ask the wrong question, whatever answer you get is unlikely to help you.

      2. The Sarjeant

Why do you always have to prove everything wrong on here?

Explosiveness shouldn't be overrated. It's a key part to building your team, for captaincy. Getting the right captain can help so much. You say about a captain score of 6-7 as being safe, but I'd want players in my team (for captaincy material) who are a lot more explosive than that.

I never actually said that it would happen again...

I also never said to invest more in midfield, I posed it as a question. I never had a conclusion. I asked a few questions, opening up a discussion. Which is when you should have said your piece, without being so negative - yet again.

Maybe mids have more double digit hauls because they get an extra point for goals and a CS point.

I think this is misleading. The problem is the arbitrary nature of your cutoff - 10 points. Midfielders can get to 10 points with one goal plus bonus. Forwards cannot.
If the arbitrary cutoff point was 8 points, or 12 points, then I think you would have a very different conclusion

      1. The Sarjeant
        • 12 Years

The whole point for looking at double digit hauls is for captaincy. If any of my captains score a double digit haul I'd be happy, unless I captained someone else from the majority who scored a lot more.

Agreed, but I think the point is that 'double digit' is an arbitrary cutoff, which perhaps favours midfielders, since they can get to 10 or 11 points with just one goal. If the threshold was at 12 it might be different.

Interesting analysis and good work on your part, but I agree with this point.

The top forwards last season were not at the races though. Look at the cost of the players in each of your lists.

If fpl gets it right then the highest cost forwards should be sorting the most points and this patently didn't happen last season whereas they did get the pricing right for the mids. If Costa Rooney Aguero giroud kane benteke all get a full season firing then this research could be totally different next season

Watching Liverpool v Adelaide here in Oz...

    First 30 mins observations:

    - Milner taking share of set-pieces
    - Ibe looking spritely on the left wing looking, best effort on goal so far
    - Right back Gomez looks very good, quick, strong and good on the ball (one to watch..)
    - Origi holding the ball up well, had a couple of efforts, but nothing special so far
    - Lallana started well, but has given the ball away a couple of times in dangerous areas

    - Adelaide are meh...

Good money this morning for Rooney in the Top Goalscorer market with Ladbrokes, Paddy (20s > 14s) Boylesport & Betfair - and no wonder I say.

Think I'll top up my bet at William Hills (still 20s).

hey guys! I'm wondering if somebody noticed a patern to keeping value to your team & players - would picking a player a lot of other managers have picked mean his price will go up quicker after gw1 or is it better to pick a player few managers have picked so there are not that many who can sell him and therefore his value wont drop (will stay at the same level).

    hope this makes sense...

    1. Ginkapo FPL
      • 14 Years
      10 years, 4 months ago

A player that is heavily owned prior to the season starting has less room for price rises than a lesser owned player.

Rises are based on number of managers buying
Drops are based on percentage of mangers selling.

This means all players are equally likely to drop at the start of the season.

        Arsenal ownership atm:
        Caz 15.4%
        Wally 8%
        Rambo 8.3%
        Oz 7.4%
        GRU 11.7%

If I got it right, Caz & GRU cant jump too much in price so it might be better to start with Walcott and play it from there.

    Today's Hot Topic...

Lots of talk of Rooney and Depay as a combination in the press this morning.

Early fixtures are certainly in their favour if they're able to rotate a little in their CL qualifier.

How many of you are considering starting with the Rooney/Depay double act for 19.0m?

Aye, Depay is a gamble and right now I'm favouring doubling on Arsenal mids but Iv'e got to say, I am tempted. A couple of pre-season highlights and I think there's a chance I could risk it.

That is trouble with so much value between 8-9m. I'm going without both as Aguero will have little pre-season and banking on another Hazard slow start and value drop.

With two 8.5m slots in your team structure, Depay does explode and its very easy to get him in quickly and likely hit-free.

I think Depay will be in everyones team aat some point this year but it may take a few weeks for him to adapt to the premier league. For the time being there are lots of other similar priced mids who are known quantities.

This - not to mention being a risk of rotation.

I, as a Utd fan, am going to wait and see on this one and hope that he goes on a scorcher of a run bringing in crazy points hauls, and then I will be ready to pounce.

Just Rooney at the moment but taking him out is my easiest route to Aguero in a few weeks. I may need to go Depay at that point as I think between them they'll account for an awful lot of United's points.

Just Rooney, as he's nailed, but will monitor the other attackers first, as too many changes at Utd to see how things will go.

As you said, it'll be Ozil/Wally double up for me, as I can see ARS being a real attacking force this season, so I'm gambling on that early.

I like the look of Depay based on having seen him play, his record in Eredivisie and his free kick expertise.

However I know for sure that Mata can and almost certainly will perform excellently in FPL if he plays regularly. And he has penalties to offset Depay's freekicks.

As Mata is the proven PL player I will therefore prefer him to Depay initially as long as I am confident Mata will be a regular for LVG which is what it looks like right now, especially if ADM leaves.

I wouldn't be surprised if Depay finds his way into my team later in the season though.

As for Rooney, in the initial absence of Aguero he's pretty much an automatic pick for GW1 as it stands right now I think. I will probably switch from Rooney to Aguero in GW4.

Will give Depay a chance to prove himself but just going for Rooney for now

No Depay. Eredivisie players need time to get to speed. And Man Utd always start slowly. If you need a Man Utd midfielder, Mata is the same price and no-one has him.

I'm going all in on Rooney this year.

I think the hidden gem in the United lineup is Young, that if he can retain his starting 11 in the squad or the depature of ADM to PSG.

    Doos you still around?

Also, how much value do people place on the RMT tool? Currently at 324.92 in that.

324.92! I think mine was 310.43 the last time I checked! I wouldn't put too much trust in the numbers from RMT but I'd be interested in hearing who you have in your team if you don't mind?

Hey! It was about assessing the value of premium defenders. Look through the last couple of days hot topics (or my previous posts) - have explained it in detail!

Is it possible to have a good team with Aguero, Rooney and Hazard. If so some help would be great cause I am struggling. Also I like to have 3 strong strikers but i don't think I will be able to with the costs of Aguero, Rooney and Hazard as the rest of my team will suffer heavily. If anyone has any tips or example teams would be great! 🙂 Thanks guys!

I quite like mine but of necessity it has to be heavily imbalanced - in my case a suicidally cheap defence!

In that case you have to play 3-5-2 or 4-5-1 . i don't know if it's worth

i managed to create a team with the shocking RMT tool score of 321.6 for the first six weeks.
furthermore, i think this team makes sense:

    butland ruddy
    Clyne Darmian Toby Huth richards
Ozil Mane, Henderson Ritchie Johnson (norwich) - last two rotate very nicely
    Rooney costa Kane

I am sitting at 312 in RMT and not sure i would try and change. Im quite content with that at the moment.

How important / valuable is the RMT score?

I've currently reached 325.37 (it's an experimental team with some very weird concepts).

Trying to see if one should actually use it as a benchmark or not.

I've got as high as 316 - but have settled on a team around 310.

Well with Sanchez likely to be eased in, I think he'll get the first two starts. After that, if Giroud hasn't got off the mark, I can see Walcott getting the central berth. I'd say 90% chance he'll be in my initial lineup.

Mark you mentioned that you're looking at doubling up with Arsenal mids..

Walcott and who would your other one be?

I'm thinking of Walcott and Yaya (potential steal at 8.5)

But your comments has triggered by thoughts of also maybe doubling up with arsenal mids..
