Watford made their seventh signing of the summer transfer window on July 14, snapping up Udinese right-back Allan Nyom on a four-year deal. Speaking to the club’s official site from the Hornets’ pre-season camp in Germany, the Cameroon international is looking forward to his new challenge after numerous years on the continent:

“I think my experience from playing in other leagues will help me, but I know this division is different to Spain, and I need to work for a place in the Premier League. I’ve enjoyed the start I’ve had with Watford, there are nice players and there’s a good feeling here, so I want to play good for the team. I think my quality is good, and I want to help the team to stay in the Premier League. In Granada I played for six years, and it was a very good time. We started in Segunda Division B and we got to the first division, and that was very good for the club. I played with Ighalo and Ikechi at Granada, and I’m very happy to play with them at Watford.”

The History

Born in Paris, Nyom rose through the youth ranks at Nancy, before playing one season in the third tier of French football with AC Arles-Avignon. In the summer of 2009, the Cameroon international signed for Serie A outfit Udinese but was immediately loaned out to Granada.

Nyom instantly established himself as a regular starter at the Andalusian club, chalking up one goal in 39 starts during his debut season, with Granada earning promotion to La Liga through the play-offs. In his subsequent four years at Los Carmenes, Nyom missed just 17 league ties, registering one goal and five assists in the process.

On the international scene, Nyom elected to represent Cameroon, making his first senior appearance in November 2011 during a 3-1 win over Sudan. He was selected as part of the Indomitable Lions’ 23-man squad for the 2014 World Cup and played the full 90 minutes in a dead-rubber group match against Brazil.

The Prospects

Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores talked up Nyom’s defensive aptitude following his switch to the Premier League, saying that the Cameroonian’s unique skill set diversifies his options at the right-back berth:

“He’s a very good defensive player and I know him from Spain and the Cameroon national team. We have offensive players in his position like Anya and Paredes but he’s a different player who brings different characteristics. He’s a good defender, he’s defended against some of the best strikers in the world in the Spanish league so will provide us with good support.”

Nyom is of a different ilk to Juan Carlos Paredes – who adopted a wing-back role for a large portion of his 32 league starts last term. The Ecuadorian defender is the more attack-minded of the two – having racked up four assists in 39 appearances – yet is often criticised for neglecting his defensive duties. Ikechi Anya can also operate at right-back but was predominantly deployed as a right winger or left wing-back in the previous campaign. Nyom might well emerge as Flores’ first choice by virtue of his superior positional discipline, then, but there’s certainly no guarantees.

Assuming he can cement a regular starting role, Nyom’s limited potential for attacking returns renders him a peripheral figure on the Fantasy scene. One goal and three assists in the past two seasons is a paltry haul, particularly when the likes of Gabriele Angella – who is also priced at 4.5 – amassed an impressive 11 goals and seven assists over the previous two Championship seasons.

The former Granada loanee’s underlying stats buttress the notion that he poses minimal threat in the final third, given that his 11 shots would have ranked fifth among the Hornets’ defensive troops last term. On the flip side, Nyom did fashion 20 key passes for his team-mates, surpassing the efforts of Watford’s premier defensive creator, Miguel Layun (17 key passes).

Another factor worth noting is that Nyom is something of a card magnet; the defender has been booked at least nine times in each of his last five seasons in Spain.

In terms of fixtures, although the Hornets travel to Everton and City in the first four Gameweeks, they offer up a perfect home/away rotation with Bournemouth over the season, affording us a favourable run (AVL, WBA, SOU, LEI, nor, SUN, CPL, WAT) over the first eight Gameweeks. Although Nyom’s defensive qualities could improve his side’s chances of defensive returns – he was handed his debut in a 2-0 win over Paderborn earlier this week – his lack of attacking potential may well deter most from taking a punt.

Gutted the MF/D to get perhaps a bit top-heavy, so help me out here again, lads. Hold yer noses if the defense makes a bit of a stink, though I would welcome suggestions on how to change it.

    Courtois | Hennessey
    Mings | Morgan | Muniesa | O'Shea | Targett
    Hazard | Silva | Walcott | Ki | Wanyama
    Rooney | Costa | Sakho

So ballsy it could just work.

Knock Courtious down to a 4.5 keeper, use the mone to get yourself one half decent defender, and go for it.

I like those six attackers, but get yourself a proper 4th midfielder like Ritchie/Puncheon etc by dropping Courtois and Muniesa to someone cheaper (Panti recommended purely because how many points he'll be getting this year)

Subbed? He won't be subbed. He'll play 90 mins for 2 or 3 fixtures to cover Bertrand. Then he'll be dropped because Bertrand is an accomplished full back. It's all or nothing for poor Matty T.

I doubt it beyond maybe the first couple of weeks. Both Koeman and Les Reed, director of football, have confirmed their intention to pursue another target in the market, presumed by most to be a CB. If we had £14m to spend on Alderweireld, there must be funds for a CB in reserve.

    Hello everyone,

Any chance Ibe could be the new Sterling/Puncheon perhaps?

Seems to be playing wide although could be reverse OOP (wing back). Still, at the price he could be an option and Albrighton seemed to do OK in that role last year.

    A)
    Courtois/hamer
    Alderweild/moreno/cedrik/mert/Darmian
    Hazard/sanchez/mata/henderson/4.5
    Aguero/4.5/4.5

    B)
    Courtois/hamer
    alderwield/moreno/cedrik/4.0/4.0
    Hazard/cazorla/henderson/sterling/mata
    Benteke/kane/4.5

    So, basically, it's weather
    -a premium mid/frwd + def (aguero+darmian &sanchez+mert)
    Or
    -two good mid/frwd (cazorla+kane & sterling + benteke) ?

Edit : replace darmian with a good 5.5 now that he is announced as second string.

having previously had Ivanovic, Hazard and Darmian in squad I have again fiddled and downgraded to come up with the following

    Cech - Ruddy
    Huth - Richards - Mings - Targett
    Fabregas - Depay - Silva - Henderson
    Deeney - Costa - Rooney

Which leaves me money for Costa to Aguero should that be needed

As a United fan I always want to try and have cover, have strong feeling about Rooney and taken the gamble on Depay (if switched would be to another United player)

Silva is my big ? as downgrading him would allow upgrade of Fabregas > Hazard but as a pairing i think maybe Silva + Fabregas may earn more than Hazard + 8 Million midfielder

    AnY feedback ?

Who do you think LVG's surprise striker will be ? (not linked to by media)

      Loldado

      Huntelaar/Bas Dost

I think Huntelaar could be a good shout. Utd having only Rooney, Hernandez & Wilson isn't enough new they're back in europe and I think LVG would want someone who is experienced and also happy to be second choice to Rooney. Don't think it will be blockbuster type signing or hot youth prospect because of Rooney & Wilson.

Agree,.Can't see it being a big name/elite forward. LVG has suggested that Rooney will only play upfront and Rooney himself has set a goals target too

again I think LvG was taken too literally

When he said not linked by the media I think he meant 'not Muller'

          Or Pedro?

Don't want Huntelaar at all. Dost had a great season for Wolfsburg, but not sold on him...

Yep, wouldn't be my choice either, just throwing a name out there. Not seen Bas Dost play at all tbh

Only saw him in a couple of games and a few highlight shows, he scored 16 in 21 appearances in the league. But before that he was a bit crap at Wolfsburg, very good in Eredivisie if I recall correctly.

Anyone else think LvG's message about Darmian was just lost in translation and that he will actually be his starting RB GW1?

No but I do think it was sightly misinterpreted

Valencia will start the season IMO but Darmian won't spend all season on the bench. Lvg will want him to understand what he wants from him. Darmian will get games and if he does well, could overtake Valencia.

not saying it's true but it's more logical interpretation of what he said than I managed

One thing is for sure I don't think it's a simple as 'Darmian is back-up right back"

Hi guys, I need one more defender for 5.0 or less

    Koscielny Francis Morgan Oshea 5.0

Currently on Jenkinson but could also go with Cedric for the same price?

Koeman's has been a great success and Soton's defence was brilliant last season. But they've lost Forster, Clyne, Toby, Schneiderlin and for the first few games, Bertrand.

    West Ham CSs last season:

    7 home, 2 away.

Arsenal should score a couple for sure. More than Chelsea?

    Costa, Rooney, Sakho

While i like both Depay and Firmino, it feels like a bit of a punt that they will hit the ground running and have an instant impact in the first third of the season. I'm also generally nervous about LFC this season.
