Watford made their seventh signing of the summer transfer window on July 14, snapping up Udinese right-back Allan Nyom on a four-year deal. Speaking to the club’s official site from the Hornets’ pre-season camp in Germany, the Cameroon international is looking forward to his new challenge after numerous years on the continent:

“I think my experience from playing in other leagues will help me, but I know this division is different to Spain, and I need to work for a place in the Premier League. I’ve enjoyed the start I’ve had with Watford, there are nice players and there’s a good feeling here, so I want to play good for the team. I think my quality is good, and I want to help the team to stay in the Premier League. In Granada I played for six years, and it was a very good time. We started in Segunda Division B and we got to the first division, and that was very good for the club. I played with Ighalo and Ikechi at Granada, and I’m very happy to play with them at Watford.”

The History

Born in Paris, Nyom rose through the youth ranks at Nancy, before playing one season in the third tier of French football with AC Arles-Avignon. In the summer of 2009, the Cameroon international signed for Serie A outfit Udinese but was immediately loaned out to Granada.

Nyom instantly established himself as a regular starter at the Andalusian club, chalking up one goal in 39 starts during his debut season, with Granada earning promotion to La Liga through the play-offs. In his subsequent four years at Los Carmenes, Nyom missed just 17 league ties, registering one goal and five assists in the process.

On the international scene, Nyom elected to represent Cameroon, making his first senior appearance in November 2011 during a 3-1 win over Sudan. He was selected as part of the Indomitable Lions’ 23-man squad for the 2014 World Cup and played the full 90 minutes in a dead-rubber group match against Brazil.

The Prospects

Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores talked up Nyom’s defensive aptitude following his switch to the Premier League, saying that the Cameroonian’s unique skill set diversifies his options at the right-back berth:

“He’s a very good defensive player and I know him from Spain and the Cameroon national team. We have offensive players in his position like Anya and Paredes but he’s a different player who brings different characteristics. He’s a good defender, he’s defended against some of the best strikers in the world in the Spanish league so will provide us with good support.”

Nyom is of a different ilk to Juan Carlos Paredes – who adopted a wing-back role for a large portion of his 32 league starts last term. The Ecuadorian defender is the more attack-minded of the two – having racked up four assists in 39 appearances – yet is often criticised for neglecting his defensive duties. Ikechi Anya can also operate at right-back but was predominantly deployed as a right winger or left wing-back in the previous campaign. Nyom might well emerge as Flores’ first choice by virtue of his superior positional discipline, then, but there’s certainly no guarantees.

Assuming he can cement a regular starting role, Nyom’s limited potential for attacking returns renders him a peripheral figure on the Fantasy scene. One goal and three assists in the past two seasons is a paltry haul, particularly when the likes of Gabriele Angella – who is also priced at 4.5 – amassed an impressive 11 goals and seven assists over the previous two Championship seasons.

The former Granada loanee’s underlying stats buttress the notion that he poses minimal threat in the final third, given that his 11 shots would have ranked fifth among the Hornets’ defensive troops last term. On the flip side, Nyom did fashion 20 key passes for his team-mates, surpassing the efforts of Watford’s premier defensive creator, Miguel Layun (17 key passes).

Another factor worth noting is that Nyom is something of a card magnet; the defender has been booked at least nine times in each of his last five seasons in Spain.

In terms of fixtures, although the Hornets travel to Everton and City in the first four Gameweeks, they offer up a perfect home/away rotation with Bournemouth over the season, affording us a favourable run (AVL, WBA, SOU, LEI, nor, SUN, CPL, WAT) over the first eight Gameweeks. Although Nyom’s defensive qualities could improve his side’s chances of defensive returns – he was handed his debut in a 2-0 win over Paderborn earlier this week – his lack of attacking potential may well deter most from taking a punt.

Yeah, good point on Morgan. Was planning on benching him but other deffos have worse GW1 fixtures, so Huth it is. Coquelin is an interesting thought - how secure are his minutes?

Coquelin is very secure IMO but will NEVER attack 😉 3pts max.

Bentaleb is another good 4.5 mid, or Fletcher(WBA)

That is not the biggest problem. The problem is wasting a precious Arsenal spot. Having 2 attacking players anda defender or the opposite is very common at some point of the season and is a must during DGWs. So to waste a slot on a player that won't even get points and that you'd rarely play is not very smart.

            Walcott, Mane, Hazard, Ritchie/ 4.5

            Costa, Rooney, Deeney

Ivan and Haz to Azpi and Cesc allows me to swap Ritchie and Deeney to Sterling and Sakho or just Deeney to Kane

I'm picking Ritchie and Deeney on merit not just to be able to afford the big guns.

I think those two will get a good amount of points this season and you need players of those price range who score well in your team.

          Atm I'm working with:

          Panti 4.0m
          Ivan Kosc Morgan Francis Bassong
          Haz Walcott Depay Ritchie Wanyama
          Costa Sakho Deeney

First time I've tried without Hazard/Aguero and it looks pretty great. Downside is it doesn't contain Haz and Aguero.

        Courtois / 4.0
        Bellerin / Sakho / SUN / NEW / 4.0
Fabregas / Walcott / Sterling / Giaccherini or Redmond / Wanyama
        Costa / Rooney / Benteke

Sorry I was being factious. Cheap laughs and all that.

But yes, I agree, It's a strong team with a very scary front line!

No problem! Highly doubt I will be without Haz, same with Aguero if MP suggests he will start from GW1

Would you be so kind as to RMT after my latest tweaks...

        Schmeichel / Fabianski
        Azpi/ Koscielny / Mings / Richards / Mariappa
        Silva / Walcott / Henderson / Hazard / Hoolahan
        Rooney / Sakho / Deeney

        - Recently dropped Depay for Walcott
        - Considering swapping Silva for Sterling
        - Considering swapping Henderson for Milner
        - 0.5 ITB

Your forward line is very weak. Get at least 2 proven goalscorers from 2 big clubs. Downgrade Fabianski to 4.5 and midfield players like Silva.

        Hi all

I am new to this so could really use some feedback for my first draft if possible.

        Speroni (Butland)

Azpilicueta - Richards - Mertesacker - Clyne (Steven Taylor)

Yaya Touré - Mata - Cazorla - Hazard - Henderson

        Kane (Berahino) (Deeney)

        All advice will be appreciated.

        Thanks

I'd say your forward line is too weak and personally I'd always play with atleast 2 strikers in FF. Not sure about Richards or Clyne to be honest as I think both villa and liverpool could be particularly unpredictable. Maybe switch Henderson for Ibe as a cheap bench option and use the 2m to upgrade one of your forwards?

        Cahill/Ward/Mathews/Ward/Prodl

my only doubt is on Cahill!!!!!

Am I the only one finding it strange that those who are ridiculing Ivan owners for believing in the theory that he starts the season strong are the same people that are avoiding Hazard because they believe he starts the season slowly? Its is the same concept really. If you believe in patterns, then you should believe all the way and if you believe that these are merely coincidences then you also believe that all the way. I personally believe that these are merely coincidences even if they repeat for 5 seasons in a row provided that there are influencing factors from season to season like recovering from an injury in 1 season and not in the other or having a preseason in 1 season and not in another etc. If all variables are the same, there is no such thing as starting strongly or weakly as a rule for a specific player. The player doesn't think to himself "It is the start of the season and I perform better at the start" and the same holds for the "slow starters". The player gives their best regardless and what happens happens.

With Fab maybe its a bit different because the sample size is much larger. Maybe there is a factor that we don't know ablout like him having fitness issues. Maybe he is the type that gets fatigued midway through the season and thus his performance level drops. The same can't be said about Hazard and Ivan. They are beasts.

Here's the draft i'm going with for now. No more tinkering for a few weeks.

        Panti Hennessey

        Azpi PVA Huth Muniesa Saylor

        Hazard Walcott Mata Mane Wanyama

        Benteke Sakho Rooney

I'll cross that all important Aguero bridge in gwk 4.

        Hey guys,

What you reckon of this team?

        Butland/Myhill

        Asp Kos Morgan Coates Targett

        Mane Hazard Walcott Milner Fletcher

        Roo Lukaku Sakho

1 ITB, will probably get rid of Lukaku after first 2 gameweeks.

        Thoughts?
