After acquiring the versatile Micah Richards earlier in the transfer window, Aston Villa bolstered their defensive options further with the recruitment of Nice left-back Jordan Amavi on a five-year deal. Upon his arrival at the Villains’ training base, the 21-year-old promised the supporters that he’ll impose his physicality in every encounter:

“I want to play well for this football club. I am determined to do that. I want to make rapid progress. I will be a decisive player. I want to make a big bond with the supporters. On the pitch, I want to connect and be a fan favourite. I will bring my combative nature to the side. I will fight for them every single match. Hopefully they will enjoy that. It’s a fresh challenge and one I can’t wait to embrace. I can’t wait to get started.”

The History

Born in Toulon, France, Amavi worked his way through the youth ranks at Nice from 2010, netting three goals in 30 outings for their reserve outfit. The French defender then made his full debut in the opening fixture of the 2013/14 campaign, before going on to earn a further eight starts that term.

In the wake of Timothee Kolodziejcza’s (Nice’s first-choice left-back at that time) transfer to Sevilla in the summer of 2014, Amavi was afforded much more pitch time during the 2014/15 season. The burgeoning talent missed just two league ties in the last campaign, bagging four goals in the process, though he proved to be something of a card magnet and was booked on 11 occasions.

On the international scene. Amavi has represented France at the U18, U20 and U21 levels but is yet to earn a senior cap.

The Prospects

Given that Amavi is reported to have cost the club £10m, it’s fair to assume that he’ll be immediately handed the left-back berth for the Villains this season. Discussing his new acquisition with the local media, Sherwood is clearly impressed:

”It’s someone we’ve been tracking for a long time. He’s dynamic, gets forward, has a good delivery, and is a decent size for a left-back. He’s quick and aggressive and will be suited to the Premier League. He plays at a high tempo and French football is quite close to the English league so that will help. It will give us competition and will be a decent addition”.

With former skipper Ron Vlaar now having departed after refusing a new contract, only Micah Richards looks nailed on amongst the rest of the Midlands outfit’s rearguard. Having operated as a centre-back in all of Villa’s pre-season matches so far, Richards could be partnered by any one of Ciaran Clark, Nathan Baker, Philippe Senderos or Jores Okore in the heart of defence next term, which somewhat negates his attacking potential.

Elsewhere, Leandro Bacuna has been intriguingly stationed in midfield during the off-season, with Alan Hutton taking up the right-back berth. The Dutchman (5.0) tallied five assists in just 983 minutes in the previous campaign and has been reclassified as a defender this term but if Sherwood keeps him in an advanced role, he could afford us an out-of-position option, with a share of set-pieces heightening his appeal.

The downside is that, like Bacuna, Amavi has been handed a 5.0 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League game, whereas Richards is available for 4.5 by comparison. Nonetheless, Sherwood’s attacking style of play should suit the young Frenchman and afford him license to maraud down the flank on a regular basis.

The France U21 international’s underlying statistics further underline his potential – aside from scoring four times last term, he created 32 chances for his team-mates, which would have placed him eighth in the Premier League for key passes among defenders.

Although Villa ranked third-bottom for goals conceded last season (57), they did managed to rack up ten clean sheets – just one fewer than Manchester United. Interestingly enough, Villa were one of only two sides (Crystal Palace being the other) to register as many victories on the road as they did on home soil. In the West Midlanders’ case, this gave rise to six shut-outs away from Villa Park – only four sides achieved more.

Looking at the fixtures, Villa’s excellent start to the campaign (bou, MUN, cry, SUN, lei, WBA) offers hope of a decent start. With Richards cheaper and Bacuna potentially out of position, though, Amavi will find it difficult to initially stake a claim for our consideration. If he can settle quickly and take advantage of the fixtures, though, the young Frenchman may yet have a part ot play in our Fantasy campaigns.

          Two reasons:

          1. They will likely sign at least one other attacker, which will see some movement in United's frontline.

          2. A lot of United fans think Herrera should be a starter. If he is it will be as the AM in a three man midfield, basically taking the spot Depay is currently in.

So yeah, right now I think he'll be a starter but maybe not at #10.

Cazorla will win you more pts over the course of the season to Walcott and it would free up 0.5 for you.

Walcott is a nightmare, one GW he is guaranteed to score a hat-trick but he's not worth it in general. Especially for 9m.

When I have time at work I do. It is pretty slow going at the moment so plenty of time. I am not sold on Benteke early on myself. But we shall see if my resistance remains until the beginning of the season. He is after all one of the more logical selections.

Nice to be slow going around the start of the fantasy season!

He has been in my team since draft 1 as expected him to move to a bigger club. 8.5 i believe is a bargain and pools home fixtures are very strong. Will keep an eye on pre season but think he will be in my team come aug 8th

There isn't too much gamble in there which I always aim for at the start. Some teams have way too many unknowns for my liking. Got to go for tried and tested players with one or two punts.

I'd go with 2 x 4.5's personally ghost Toby and Taylor. Martin and Mings/Francis maybe?

I played the Beta game the year before last and I was rubbish, so I didn't do it last year. I know you've got a UFPL League going, so I'll let you know if I decide to do it this year.

!! JRod update from Erwin Koeman !!

“Graziano is living for scoring and Jay is coming back and he made three goals as well. Jay maybe needs more time to be fit again. We are very glad he is training and playing games, but he needs time. It’s a victory for him."

With that in mind, I'd approach with caution.

He's an awkward price for a lot of managers. Though I do agree, he could get good returns.

I am currently on Roo, Kane, Sakho...but could be tempted to get him over Kane and upgrade my keepers..

Roo, Pelle. Sakho looks a bit weak though

lots have Tekkers in their teams, I would go Pelle over him but agree it is an awkward price,

That's not what I'm getting at. 🙂 I've already written about the competition in that attacking three. See hot topic. 😀 What I'm raising is the idea that they might not consider him fit enough yet to start PL games.

Last year I picked up Pelle at the start and this year I will be doing the same. I just have a feeling he will score 10+ this year.

A whole lot of love for Walcott on here, which is understandable as Sanchez is out.

But where do people see him starting? Wing or replacing Giroud?

Just tinkering like everyone else. Too light defence right?

        Kasper / Hennessey

Williams - Sakho- Huth- O'Shea- Mings

        Fabregas- Milner- Walcott- Depay- Fletcher

        Rooney-Benteke-Costa

Yeah, reckon you need at least one Chelsea or arsenal defender if not both. I'm not too keen on Sakho in defence. Depay and Benteke could take time to gel so I'm going to keep them on my watchlist. I'm holding off on Fabs until after the City game because he'll almost certainly be defensive in that match so would rather have someone else for 2 weeks and transfer him in eg Ozil/Cazorla/Mata

Something to think about (I know many of you already have). Last season over half of the managers that used their season wildcard did so by gw5 (47.5% didn't use it at all). With the added flexibility re the 2nd wildcard this season, that figure will surely increase. ie The majority of us, whether we plan to or not, will wildcard early so why fight it? Pick a team for the first 3 gw's. I currently hv 7 ARS/CHE/MUN, 2 WHM, 2 SUN + fodder. Gw2 - Hazard out for Payet giving me 3 WHM and 2 SUN with LEI,BOU and NOR,SWA as their next 2 fixtures. Gw3 - money itb to bring in whoever I want (probably Sanchez). Gw4 - Top of my ml, wildcard, in come Aguero and Silva/Sterling for City's great run of fixtures, game over! Foolproof, right?!

I'll almost certainly use it GW4 or 5, but that won't make much difference to my GW1 squad.

Why not? If you're already resigned to using it early then surely the best tactic is to try and get maximum points from those opening fixtures

Sterling is obviously a starter. Where are people getting that he isn't from?

Walcott another starter. Definitely at least until Alexis is back, but think they'll both make the starting XI once Arsenal begin to tick.

As with Milner, I genuinely think Henderson is the better pick. Played 3256/3420 minutes last season, captaincy will improve him greatly and he's a set-piece taker as well as being Liverpool's first choice penalty-taker (never mind how good Benteke is).
