After acquiring the versatile Micah Richards earlier in the transfer window, Aston Villa bolstered their defensive options further with the recruitment of Nice left-back Jordan Amavi on a five-year deal. Upon his arrival at the Villains’ training base, the 21-year-old promised the supporters that he’ll impose his physicality in every encounter:

“I want to play well for this football club. I am determined to do that. I want to make rapid progress. I will be a decisive player. I want to make a big bond with the supporters. On the pitch, I want to connect and be a fan favourite. I will bring my combative nature to the side. I will fight for them every single match. Hopefully they will enjoy that. It’s a fresh challenge and one I can’t wait to embrace. I can’t wait to get started.”

The History

Born in Toulon, France, Amavi worked his way through the youth ranks at Nice from 2010, netting three goals in 30 outings for their reserve outfit. The French defender then made his full debut in the opening fixture of the 2013/14 campaign, before going on to earn a further eight starts that term.

In the wake of Timothee Kolodziejcza’s (Nice’s first-choice left-back at that time) transfer to Sevilla in the summer of 2014, Amavi was afforded much more pitch time during the 2014/15 season. The burgeoning talent missed just two league ties in the last campaign, bagging four goals in the process, though he proved to be something of a card magnet and was booked on 11 occasions.

On the international scene. Amavi has represented France at the U18, U20 and U21 levels but is yet to earn a senior cap.

The Prospects

Given that Amavi is reported to have cost the club £10m, it’s fair to assume that he’ll be immediately handed the left-back berth for the Villains this season. Discussing his new acquisition with the local media, Sherwood is clearly impressed:

”It’s someone we’ve been tracking for a long time. He’s dynamic, gets forward, has a good delivery, and is a decent size for a left-back. He’s quick and aggressive and will be suited to the Premier League. He plays at a high tempo and French football is quite close to the English league so that will help. It will give us competition and will be a decent addition”.

With former skipper Ron Vlaar now having departed after refusing a new contract, only Micah Richards looks nailed on amongst the rest of the Midlands outfit’s rearguard. Having operated as a centre-back in all of Villa’s pre-season matches so far, Richards could be partnered by any one of Ciaran Clark, Nathan Baker, Philippe Senderos or Jores Okore in the heart of defence next term, which somewhat negates his attacking potential.

Elsewhere, Leandro Bacuna has been intriguingly stationed in midfield during the off-season, with Alan Hutton taking up the right-back berth. The Dutchman (5.0) tallied five assists in just 983 minutes in the previous campaign and has been reclassified as a defender this term but if Sherwood keeps him in an advanced role, he could afford us an out-of-position option, with a share of set-pieces heightening his appeal.

The downside is that, like Bacuna, Amavi has been handed a 5.0 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League game, whereas Richards is available for 4.5 by comparison. Nonetheless, Sherwood’s attacking style of play should suit the young Frenchman and afford him license to maraud down the flank on a regular basis.

The France U21 international’s underlying statistics further underline his potential – aside from scoring four times last term, he created 32 chances for his team-mates, which would have placed him eighth in the Premier League for key passes among defenders.

Although Villa ranked third-bottom for goals conceded last season (57), they did managed to rack up ten clean sheets – just one fewer than Manchester United. Interestingly enough, Villa were one of only two sides (Crystal Palace being the other) to register as many victories on the road as they did on home soil. In the West Midlanders’ case, this gave rise to six shut-outs away from Villa Park – only four sides achieved more.

Looking at the fixtures, Villa’s excellent start to the campaign (bou, MUN, cry, SUN, lei, WBA) offers hope of a decent start. With Richards cheaper and Bacuna potentially out of position, though, Amavi will find it difficult to initially stake a claim for our consideration. If he can settle quickly and take advantage of the fixtures, though, the young Frenchman may yet have a part ot play in our Fantasy campaigns.

I wasn't being touchy...you just read my comment a certain way that I didn't intend...and yes I didn't answer your question the way you wanted but that's because I gave you the answer you needed (in my opinion) rather than the answer you wanted

so I'm guessing you're a bit inexperienced at this?

I'm telling you to cut down the money you're spending in defence because (usually) attacking players score more points per game than defending players

almost everybody who does well regularly will have cheap keepers...look at the RMT's if you don't believe me

Lee Thomas-Mason of Metro reported Chelsea are willing to meet Pedro's £21 million buy-out clause, as Mourinho looks for a replacement for flop signing Juan Cuadrado.

It is suggested in the report that Chelsea will offer the Spain international a lucrative four-year deal in order to gain his signature and defeat the interest of United.

How is Cuadrado a flop when he's hardly been given a chance? Mourinho does this so often by buying players he doesn't need and shifting the blame onto them.

    Kristof Terreur @HLNinEngeland
Mourinho on Witsel link: "At this moment we have Matic, Ramires, Cesc, Mikel, L-Cheek & Oscar. 6 midfield players. I have no extra space."

Lol, that's because at the moment he was talking about not needing a new CM signing because he has 6 midfield players and no space for another. Cuadrado isn't a CM, which is why he didn't mention him.

He said a similar thing about wingers. The point is though that for every player we sell he said we'd buy except for Stones. So Luis goes, in comes Baba. Mikel goes, in comes Witsel. Cuadrado/Moses goes, in comes Pedro

    Rate my team.

    Ruddy
    Darmian Azpilicueta Koscielny
    Hazard Walcott Fabregas Henderson
    Rooney Benteke Deene

    ( Rudd, Huth, Wanyama, S.Taylor)

    Good to go?

Darmian rotation risk especially after LVGs comments. Not too keen on the keepers. Would proabably downgrade Darmian and use the cash to upgrade keepers. Rest is good though although Saylor obviously a risk

      Looks good.

Maybe downgrade Azpil and get Courtois or d/g Kosc to get Cech. Ruddy won't get you so many points.

    How's my team?

    Schmeichel, Butland,
    Azpi, Mert, Cedric, Francis, Prodl
    Walcott, Henderson, Depay, Hazard, Wanyama
    Deeney, Costa, Bentekkers

    Any weak spots?

      Looks solid outside 3rd defender.

Yeah Mertesacker is not a good pick.

Why not? Everywhere I read implies him and Kos are both guaranteed to start intially with Gabriel playing cup games

Depay and Tekkers are slight gambles but otherwise good team

So I guess the consensus on here is Azpi & Kosc > Ivan & Cedric?

I really fancy Soton to do well this season aswell (remember them being tipped for relegation this time last year). I think Koemans way of organising his defence weighs more heavily than Schneiderlin and Alderweireld leaving. Clasie is a class act and I expect them to buy a New CB aswell.

But maybe Azpi is a better choice than Ivan based on value alone? Tough one for sure.

I'm weighing up the same thing except lescott alongside Ivan instead of cedric. Which way do you think you will go? I worry that if azpi and kosc don't do well under new bonus rules then they aren't that great

But I think they will though. Boring picks nonetheless.

I want to go Ivan/Cedric, I'm just questioning if it's sensible. Should Ivan go big it will be a real pain to own Azpi as an upgrade will be near impossible. But if he doesn't, and Azpi even gets more BPs, then it will feel like a waste of 1m although it will be easy to downgrade.

Should Cedric (or Lescott for that matter) be a failure, then there's plenty of options at 5.0 this year. LIV def (Moreno/Sakho/Lovren), Alderweireld, Cedric/WBA def (depending on who you've got), Janmaat, SWA def etc. Will be easy to make a switch.

at the end of the day i think Ivan/5 and azpi/kosc will probably end up similar total points. Ivan/5 just seems more exciting though, and as you say could always downgrade ivan to azpi if it becomes clear he is getting the bonus and use the cash to go 5 to ballerin or whoever has nailed a cheap are spot?

I've gone off cedric a bit after reading the europa league hot topic this morning. think europa mayhave bigger effect than schneiderlin > clasie

He's in danger of being the next English player to be ridiculously over-hyped.

      Think of poor Josh McEachran.

Dofference is McEachran was all about technical ability which is tougher to adapt from the u21. RLC is a beast physically
