After acquiring the versatile Micah Richards earlier in the transfer window, Aston Villa bolstered their defensive options further with the recruitment of Nice left-back Jordan Amavi on a five-year deal. Upon his arrival at the Villains’ training base, the 21-year-old promised the supporters that he’ll impose his physicality in every encounter:

“I want to play well for this football club. I am determined to do that. I want to make rapid progress. I will be a decisive player. I want to make a big bond with the supporters. On the pitch, I want to connect and be a fan favourite. I will bring my combative nature to the side. I will fight for them every single match. Hopefully they will enjoy that. It’s a fresh challenge and one I can’t wait to embrace. I can’t wait to get started.”

The History

Born in Toulon, France, Amavi worked his way through the youth ranks at Nice from 2010, netting three goals in 30 outings for their reserve outfit. The French defender then made his full debut in the opening fixture of the 2013/14 campaign, before going on to earn a further eight starts that term.

In the wake of Timothee Kolodziejcza’s (Nice’s first-choice left-back at that time) transfer to Sevilla in the summer of 2014, Amavi was afforded much more pitch time during the 2014/15 season. The burgeoning talent missed just two league ties in the last campaign, bagging four goals in the process, though he proved to be something of a card magnet and was booked on 11 occasions.

On the international scene. Amavi has represented France at the U18, U20 and U21 levels but is yet to earn a senior cap.

The Prospects

Given that Amavi is reported to have cost the club £10m, it’s fair to assume that he’ll be immediately handed the left-back berth for the Villains this season. Discussing his new acquisition with the local media, Sherwood is clearly impressed:

”It’s someone we’ve been tracking for a long time. He’s dynamic, gets forward, has a good delivery, and is a decent size for a left-back. He’s quick and aggressive and will be suited to the Premier League. He plays at a high tempo and French football is quite close to the English league so that will help. It will give us competition and will be a decent addition”.

With former skipper Ron Vlaar now having departed after refusing a new contract, only Micah Richards looks nailed on amongst the rest of the Midlands outfit’s rearguard. Having operated as a centre-back in all of Villa’s pre-season matches so far, Richards could be partnered by any one of Ciaran Clark, Nathan Baker, Philippe Senderos or Jores Okore in the heart of defence next term, which somewhat negates his attacking potential.

Elsewhere, Leandro Bacuna has been intriguingly stationed in midfield during the off-season, with Alan Hutton taking up the right-back berth. The Dutchman (5.0) tallied five assists in just 983 minutes in the previous campaign and has been reclassified as a defender this term but if Sherwood keeps him in an advanced role, he could afford us an out-of-position option, with a share of set-pieces heightening his appeal.

The downside is that, like Bacuna, Amavi has been handed a 5.0 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League game, whereas Richards is available for 4.5 by comparison. Nonetheless, Sherwood’s attacking style of play should suit the young Frenchman and afford him license to maraud down the flank on a regular basis.

The France U21 international’s underlying statistics further underline his potential – aside from scoring four times last term, he created 32 chances for his team-mates, which would have placed him eighth in the Premier League for key passes among defenders.

Although Villa ranked third-bottom for goals conceded last season (57), they did managed to rack up ten clean sheets – just one fewer than Manchester United. Interestingly enough, Villa were one of only two sides (Crystal Palace being the other) to register as many victories on the road as they did on home soil. In the West Midlanders’ case, this gave rise to six shut-outs away from Villa Park – only four sides achieved more.

Looking at the fixtures, Villa’s excellent start to the campaign (bou, MUN, cry, SUN, lei, WBA) offers hope of a decent start. With Richards cheaper and Bacuna potentially out of position, though, Amavi will find it difficult to initially stake a claim for our consideration. If he can settle quickly and take advantage of the fixtures, though, the young Frenchman may yet have a part ot play in our Fantasy campaigns.

I fear rotation in the CB position at Sunderland and I don't think a 2GW stint with Targett is a good idea unless you plan an early WC (which I also think is a bad idea).

Rest of the team is solid but I have a hunch the Sakho love will end in disapointment.

I mean he is a new signing and should be a starter so I wouldn't want to mislead you. However the risk is there and I just feel its better to go for super safe options instead.

It'll be spent but probably on 3 !*$£ £10m players who are really worth ~5m rather than a marquee signing but it depends what positions those players play in. The other £2m will be saved to buy out Sherwood's contract in November.

Honestly I think meet is entering the phase of his career where 2/3 bad games sees Gabriel play in the next home game and steal his spot. Kosc will play 38 games this year barring injury guaranteed. Mangala is in the other position of being the guy trying to replace the incumbent. Don't waste spots on potentially flaky players

I'm having a difficult time deciding between Hendo and Milner. They both have good upside, and I feel like they will share free kicks/corners. Is Hendo on pens, or is Benteke possibly? If you had to pick, would you go Henderson or Milner?

Not much in it, I've chosen Henderson as I think he will at least match last year's output but likely increase upon it. Milner should do well but a bit riskier IMO coming into a new team.

      A better 5.0 defender. Cedric?
I'd probably stick with Caz, though Ozil could be appealing.
Personally not a fan on Myhill/Hennesey, but seems to be popular right now

Is it popular? I've always been on Myhill and I'm just sticking with one goalie. Less hassle and worry for me. Not too confident with Souhampton def and I already have 2 SOU players so don't want to get a 3rd one. If I don't go with PVA I'll probably go with Williams.

        Thanks

No one knows who is on pens, but I would guess that they are Henderson's. If that's true, I think if I'd go for Henderson over Milner.

so I always think Oscar is a smashing passer but he's just got too little else in his game...you rarely see a surging run and his shooting is often wayward

but I don't watch chelsea that often...what do you guys think?

Clever positionally, works extremely hard and puts in a lot of tackles, presses well, enables Cesc to play in CM (without such a hard-working #10 that wouldn't work), good shot, talented and has good vision. All the potential is there.

Hasn't had a proper pre-season for 4 or 5 years, has hardly had a proper rest for 4 or 5 years. This summer he will get both. This is his season. Mourinho expects an "evolution" comparable to what has happened with Hazard. We'll see.

Oscar is an amazing passer, good dribbler, but his most admirable quality is his defensive work for a no.10 is really something special. However, one area that needs significant improvment is his finishing, he also tends to drift out in the 2nd half of the season

I know we said the same thing last year, but Terry is not getting any younger. This may be the year that his age catches up to him.

The season age catches up will be when he gets his next serious injury. JT knows this well and spends much spare time - in the summer, in international breaks - doing repetitions in the Cobham sandpit, sprint-turn-sprint-turn... He works incredibly hard to maintain top level because he wants to stay there and he wants Chelsea to be his only club.

Last season I was at the Wycombe - Chelsea pre-season friendly which happened only 2 days into pre-season. JT already looked as fit as a butcher's dog - lean, focused, ready for a big season. He's a consummate professional whatever his detractors say. And the stand-out CB of the PL era, only Vidic deserves mentioning in the same breath really.

For as long as he doesn't get a bad injury he'll be the man for Chelsea. His game doesn't rely on pace, never did. But he is at an age now where an injury setback would be much harder to recover from. Jose thinks 2 more seasons. I certainly hope so. 34 is not old for a CB, in Italy that is almost considered as a prime age for that position. Though Serie A is not played at the same pace as the PL of course.

much room for improvement if you ask me

i don't like gomis although he's not terrible...payet might play a stormer from week 1 but he's a risk and redmond is too expensive for your cheapest attacker

      everton have nasty fixtures

cresswell too expensive and mixed fixtures
