After acquiring the versatile Micah Richards earlier in the transfer window, Aston Villa bolstered their defensive options further with the recruitment of Nice left-back Jordan Amavi on a five-year deal. Upon his arrival at the Villains’ training base, the 21-year-old promised the supporters that he’ll impose his physicality in every encounter:

“I want to play well for this football club. I am determined to do that. I want to make rapid progress. I will be a decisive player. I want to make a big bond with the supporters. On the pitch, I want to connect and be a fan favourite. I will bring my combative nature to the side. I will fight for them every single match. Hopefully they will enjoy that. It’s a fresh challenge and one I can’t wait to embrace. I can’t wait to get started.”

The History

Born in Toulon, France, Amavi worked his way through the youth ranks at Nice from 2010, netting three goals in 30 outings for their reserve outfit. The French defender then made his full debut in the opening fixture of the 2013/14 campaign, before going on to earn a further eight starts that term.

In the wake of Timothee Kolodziejcza’s (Nice’s first-choice left-back at that time) transfer to Sevilla in the summer of 2014, Amavi was afforded much more pitch time during the 2014/15 season. The burgeoning talent missed just two league ties in the last campaign, bagging four goals in the process, though he proved to be something of a card magnet and was booked on 11 occasions.

On the international scene. Amavi has represented France at the U18, U20 and U21 levels but is yet to earn a senior cap.

The Prospects

Given that Amavi is reported to have cost the club £10m, it’s fair to assume that he’ll be immediately handed the left-back berth for the Villains this season. Discussing his new acquisition with the local media, Sherwood is clearly impressed:

”It’s someone we’ve been tracking for a long time. He’s dynamic, gets forward, has a good delivery, and is a decent size for a left-back. He’s quick and aggressive and will be suited to the Premier League. He plays at a high tempo and French football is quite close to the English league so that will help. It will give us competition and will be a decent addition”.

With former skipper Ron Vlaar now having departed after refusing a new contract, only Micah Richards looks nailed on amongst the rest of the Midlands outfit’s rearguard. Having operated as a centre-back in all of Villa’s pre-season matches so far, Richards could be partnered by any one of Ciaran Clark, Nathan Baker, Philippe Senderos or Jores Okore in the heart of defence next term, which somewhat negates his attacking potential.

Elsewhere, Leandro Bacuna has been intriguingly stationed in midfield during the off-season, with Alan Hutton taking up the right-back berth. The Dutchman (5.0) tallied five assists in just 983 minutes in the previous campaign and has been reclassified as a defender this term but if Sherwood keeps him in an advanced role, he could afford us an out-of-position option, with a share of set-pieces heightening his appeal.

The downside is that, like Bacuna, Amavi has been handed a 5.0 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League game, whereas Richards is available for 4.5 by comparison. Nonetheless, Sherwood’s attacking style of play should suit the young Frenchman and afford him license to maraud down the flank on a regular basis.

The France U21 international’s underlying statistics further underline his potential – aside from scoring four times last term, he created 32 chances for his team-mates, which would have placed him eighth in the Premier League for key passes among defenders.

Although Villa ranked third-bottom for goals conceded last season (57), they did managed to rack up ten clean sheets – just one fewer than Manchester United. Interestingly enough, Villa were one of only two sides (Crystal Palace being the other) to register as many victories on the road as they did on home soil. In the West Midlanders’ case, this gave rise to six shut-outs away from Villa Park – only four sides achieved more.

Looking at the fixtures, Villa’s excellent start to the campaign (bou, MUN, cry, SUN, lei, WBA) offers hope of a decent start. With Richards cheaper and Bacuna potentially out of position, though, Amavi will find it difficult to initially stake a claim for our consideration. If he can settle quickly and take advantage of the fixtures, though, the young Frenchman may yet have a part ot play in our Fantasy campaigns.

Was he? I remember him taking an unusually long time to get back in the team. I remember Townsend getting looks...and Dembele. I just get the impression that Poch isn't terribly fond of Chadli. Idk, could be out of nothing. I also don't really rate Chadli so maybe I am painting a more pessimistic picture on his outlook this season.

Well he was recovering from injury and the passing of his father... 😉

He played in huge patches. started every game from gw2-11 then picked up an injury. missed a game and was sub in 3 more. Then played every game from gw17-22. His father then passed away, next game was in just under 2 weeks, he started as sub for that game and the next 3. He then started the last 11 game of the season

I think everyone is letting that get into their head too much when evaluating Swansea in general. They are in the rare place of being a for sure top 10 side with no European distractions and they were really quite strong last season. They also have had very little turmoil this offseason which cannot be said of most other teams around them.

Ahhh I misunderstood your last comment as neither would be essential. I tell you what Hennessey at WBA could make him the first essential keeper essential just for what his price facilitates elsewhere. Much like Kane's cheapness facilitated great midfields last year.

A WBA starting GK at 4.0 would be almost impossible to resist. I might even re-jig my whole defence if that happened.

He is not terribly high on my 5.0 defender list. I'll be having a miss at him for my GW1 team. If they don't sign another CB though, I'll have to shuffle things around a bit to accommodate Maya.

      Potential issues

      A) gomis may not be nailed on, Eder and Ayew says hello

      B) no Hazard? Gambling I see..

      C) I doubt Tekkers will start, his transfer saga is preventing this

How exactly is the cutoff for the week established? Do you simply eject a fixed number of teams each week, or is the safety score some percentage of the week's average?

Bottom X% or equal after hits.
X gets bigger during the season.
          Will be 5 or 6 for GW1 - GW10 or so.

Could you do one on striker shoe sizes?

I'm sure you could make a case that the bigger the feet the less the technical ability. You can do anything with stats. 🙂

Glenn Murray has size 16s by the way.

Yes but if you want them in, i prefer that you spend all your cash from GW1 for more expensive players, who will probably bring you more points, and then use FT.

For expemple, start with Yaya i/o bolasie for City coverage and downgrade him to get Aguero when fit

Nobody knows. But if he can replicate that I don't think anyone could argue there is value there.

Don't think he could match last season even with the slow start. He had confidence spilling everywhere.

I think it's a coin flip. He could do it but could easily not. I personally feel with my team I can take a small risk on him.

Very true. As the saying goes. History repeats itself. He has proven himself (at least a bit) in the epl and 9.5 is not a hefty price to pay for that imo.

I don't mind him as an option but i'm not sure a spurs striker has ever justified 9.5m in fpl. The main thing i like about him is his explosiveness but feel there are better options out there

I have Kane. I think people are questioning him due to the amount of games he has played. He slowed down last season as the year went on. I think he is still very lethal and should produce similar.

Big price hike means he's competing with the big boys and kinda has to deliver on that. Im very wary of getting players that have a large price hike from the previous season cos very often they fall short of the mark.

Rubbish, Benteke and Lukaku have both shown their potential in seasons past. 2 seasons ago Benteke scored 19 goals in 6 games fewer than Kane needed to score 21 last year.

he scored 19 goals in 2818 minutes as opposed to Kane's 21 in 2581... lukaku has never come close to those numbers, pelle is more unproven than all of them...

Kane is no longer the surprise package that he was. Teams had already learned by about March how to stop him as Spurs were pretty much a one man team (ok, two man with Erik). I'll be waiting to see if he can reinvent himself, 9.5 is too much for me.

Not really. You asked why and got some explanations.

      Slightly longer answer...

      Aguero Costa Rooney Kane Giroud

It's unlikely that anyone can afford more than 2 of those. Many will have only one and load up the midfield. Kane therefore has some stiff competition.

Yes, mainly Costa Rooney Benteke. But Costa is only a placeholder for Aguero in most cases. Having 3 (even with Big Ben) is going to prove difficult once Aguero is back.

Price. Possible SSS. Other options like Benteke, Pelle, Giroud, Lukaku in price bracket.

      This one should be hulked.

I agree with MarknLard's view. It was pretty obvious that other teams had him figured him - stop him for getting a head of speed; push Eriksen wide; limit Kane to pot shots.

But, another take on Kane's drop in form towards the end of the season was that HE was trying to be top scorer...but HIS TEAM were on holiday mood.

If you watched the last few games of the season, Kane was getting no support and was shooting from all over the place. I'm pretty sure if we checked his shooting accuracy for the last 5-6 games it would be much much lower than the rest of the season.

It's ridiculous. Last season he scored like an 11 million forward. People seem to be overlooking him for Costa, who is more expensive, scored less points, loves a card, has dodgy hamstrings and doesn't get BAPS. Also not on penalties.
Others seem to be going with benteke instead, which is madness IMO. Worse player, less attacking team, play style unsuited to player, rotation risk with 6 forwards at Liverpool.

I love Harry Kane, but I'm waiting on him.

Everyone else on here is talking about whether he's good enough. We know he is. My worry is that at the moment, Spurs are going to be relying on him to get them through BPL matches and the Europa League (unless Soldado gets bitten by a radioactive spider or something).

If August and September look good for Spurs, and they give Kane (and Eriksen) some backup, I'll look again.

And if August turns out good for Kane, he'll still be good value - even if he gets a price rise.

9.5M is too steep a price hike for 1 season…especially when he sort of faded towards the end…8-8.5 would have been more appropriate imo...

though that being said when Aguero and Sanchez come back Both Wally and Bony could potentially be dropped. Sterling/Giroud is probably a better safety blanket in case you have other fires to put out

I seem to remember no one thought Bale could replicate his first and second seasons after various price hikes, but it can happen. Don't think what Kane was worth last year has anything to do with assessing his value this year. Could he replicate or improve his tally from last year as a wiser, matured player? Of course he could. Will he? I doubt it. Is he worth 9.5m? Yes imo, he was massively undervalued last year.
