After acquiring the versatile Micah Richards earlier in the transfer window, Aston Villa bolstered their defensive options further with the recruitment of Nice left-back Jordan Amavi on a five-year deal. Upon his arrival at the Villains’ training base, the 21-year-old promised the supporters that he’ll impose his physicality in every encounter:

“I want to play well for this football club. I am determined to do that. I want to make rapid progress. I will be a decisive player. I want to make a big bond with the supporters. On the pitch, I want to connect and be a fan favourite. I will bring my combative nature to the side. I will fight for them every single match. Hopefully they will enjoy that. It’s a fresh challenge and one I can’t wait to embrace. I can’t wait to get started.”

The History

Born in Toulon, France, Amavi worked his way through the youth ranks at Nice from 2010, netting three goals in 30 outings for their reserve outfit. The French defender then made his full debut in the opening fixture of the 2013/14 campaign, before going on to earn a further eight starts that term.

In the wake of Timothee Kolodziejcza’s (Nice’s first-choice left-back at that time) transfer to Sevilla in the summer of 2014, Amavi was afforded much more pitch time during the 2014/15 season. The burgeoning talent missed just two league ties in the last campaign, bagging four goals in the process, though he proved to be something of a card magnet and was booked on 11 occasions.

On the international scene. Amavi has represented France at the U18, U20 and U21 levels but is yet to earn a senior cap.

The Prospects

Given that Amavi is reported to have cost the club £10m, it’s fair to assume that he’ll be immediately handed the left-back berth for the Villains this season. Discussing his new acquisition with the local media, Sherwood is clearly impressed:

”It’s someone we’ve been tracking for a long time. He’s dynamic, gets forward, has a good delivery, and is a decent size for a left-back. He’s quick and aggressive and will be suited to the Premier League. He plays at a high tempo and French football is quite close to the English league so that will help. It will give us competition and will be a decent addition”.

With former skipper Ron Vlaar now having departed after refusing a new contract, only Micah Richards looks nailed on amongst the rest of the Midlands outfit’s rearguard. Having operated as a centre-back in all of Villa’s pre-season matches so far, Richards could be partnered by any one of Ciaran Clark, Nathan Baker, Philippe Senderos or Jores Okore in the heart of defence next term, which somewhat negates his attacking potential.

Elsewhere, Leandro Bacuna has been intriguingly stationed in midfield during the off-season, with Alan Hutton taking up the right-back berth. The Dutchman (5.0) tallied five assists in just 983 minutes in the previous campaign and has been reclassified as a defender this term but if Sherwood keeps him in an advanced role, he could afford us an out-of-position option, with a share of set-pieces heightening his appeal.

The downside is that, like Bacuna, Amavi has been handed a 5.0 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League game, whereas Richards is available for 4.5 by comparison. Nonetheless, Sherwood’s attacking style of play should suit the young Frenchman and afford him license to maraud down the flank on a regular basis.

The France U21 international’s underlying statistics further underline his potential – aside from scoring four times last term, he created 32 chances for his team-mates, which would have placed him eighth in the Premier League for key passes among defenders.

Although Villa ranked third-bottom for goals conceded last season (57), they did managed to rack up ten clean sheets – just one fewer than Manchester United. Interestingly enough, Villa were one of only two sides (Crystal Palace being the other) to register as many victories on the road as they did on home soil. In the West Midlanders’ case, this gave rise to six shut-outs away from Villa Park – only four sides achieved more.

Looking at the fixtures, Villa’s excellent start to the campaign (bou, MUN, cry, SUN, lei, WBA) offers hope of a decent start. With Richards cheaper and Bacuna potentially out of position, though, Amavi will find it difficult to initially stake a claim for our consideration. If he can settle quickly and take advantage of the fixtures, though, the young Frenchman may yet have a part ot play in our Fantasy campaigns.

    What up DudeZone.

Is anyone else cold on SOT defense?

They lost Clyne, Alderweireld and Schneiderlin.
Forster out injured. Stekelenburg an unknown quantity.

Their schedule is attractive for the first 7 weeks, I have to say. But they seem more a gamble than ever.

I know which one I prefer long-term, but for just the first three gameweeks (before Man City's fixtures ease up, and possibly while Benteke is still feeling his way), which do you prefer:

    A) Silva - Benteke - Rooney

    B) Ozil - Kane - Costa

So you are confident that Sterling will be more productive than Silva early on? I'd like to buy that but just worry that more blunders in front of the net will be typical.

Last time Liverpool sold a 50m striker (Torres) to buy a 35m striker (Carroll) it didn't turn out well - though Torres did even worse for CHE.

Last year Suarez for Balotelli and Lambert wasn't too clever either. But only on hindsight.

Carroll and Balotelli were great options when purchased, bad only on hindsight.

Nah, Balotelli was one of the most obvious transfer failings in the history of football.

Agree with Carroll. That move sugested promise at the time.

Fpl rise he could be great option at 8.5m. Not sure I will start with him though, worth waiting to see how they set up and he fits in, especially early on.

He could equally be a square peg in a round hole

There's almost always a budget striker who does well - Carroll, Odemwingie, Lambert from past seasons. There's also always a budget striker who fails - Anelka was a horrible gamble for many the other year...

Deeney, from what I've seen (ie youtube), has a bit of arrogance and confidence in his abilities. I mean...just look at his goal celebrations. The guy's got fire.

They're all decent footballers, but the above could be Deeney's X factor.

I agree. Also Jerome is hardly explosive and isn't a certain starter. Wilson is a good player but seems to rely on his pace more than anything else. I think he may be found out in the prem.

Much more scope to switch formations this year, down to pricing. No 4m prospects is significant.

See, to begin with, I'm pondering that a Bellerin and a benched 4.5 midfielder is a better prospect than say a Ki/Ritchie and a benched/rotated 4.5 defender.

What do we think? It's important to know that it would just be to kick proceedings off. Once if and/or when a new Siggy arises then the second 4.5 midfielder would be upgraded.

Yeah, I know CSs from the big sides generally take a while to gather momentum, but my best season was kicking off with a strong backline, a heavy hitter or two up front and then slowly jump on the mids.

I've toyed with 3-5-2 in contrast to my current 4-3-3. Fantastic if you can fit 5 heavy hitters in but if you're resorting to cheapies then a quality defender or a budget forward is a better shout.

Hope that makes sense. Will check out the HTs, thanks.

    Admire My Team

    Myhill - Guzan
    Kos - Ivan - Clyne - Francis - PvA
    Hend - Yaya - Chadli - Wanyama - Siggi
    Rooney - Costa - Sakho

    0.5m itb

    - Clyne is the oddball. My punt. Would downgrade but his home fixtures are gold and I think he'll be set free to attack.
    - Shaky on Sakho (well, on WestHam), but short of Agbonlahor or Deeney (to fund stronger mids), no idea who else I'd choose.

      Not keen to be honest....

GK: Question marks over whether Myhill will start and Villa under Sherwood spells disaster.

Defence: The main two fair enough but not sure Clyne is all that worth it. Do Bournemouth and Sunderlan rotate well? Is PVA worth that bit more?

Midfield: No real big hitter here. Yaya getting older. You may be scrambling for Hazard before too long.

Forwards: Funds for Aguero? Can't see it. Surely you can drop Costa for cheaper and upgrade a midfielder to Hazard.

      All my opinion of cause...

      1. Pepereina Pizza

GK: points are inconsistent unless you go in for 5.5m (Cech, Courtois)... not interested. Decent home/away rotation for 9m? done.
Myhill replacement is a straight swap.

DEF: PvA attacking ticker, def ticker = good value. I don't plan rotations more than 5, 6 weeks out, at most. Bournemouth is my bencher 95% of the 10 week horizon. Doesn't give good return to sweat an airtight rotation because I'll have WC'd by GW6, most like.

MID: "big hitter" is a dogma I don't subscribe to. Better things to do with Hazard money. Even if Sanchez were healthy, he won't be their striker like he was last season. I'll buy either Caz/Walcott once one of them is firing.

FWD: Rooney/Sakho out for Kun/5m punt, once there are 3 gw's behind me.

Also, Yaya may be getting older but he still found a way to be 7th highest in points-per-game last season.
Better FPL returns than Cazorla, Sterling, Eriksen, Mata, Mane, AdM...

Not sure about double WHU attack but could be great if both players are on the same wavelength.

Reckon Burke will get any game time? My opinion is that your front 3 might not be able to do the job. and you realistically only have 2 captain options unless you're usually punty with your captain choices.

as good a GK rotation as any (they're all guesses)

DEF: personal preference, but I see non-bench (rotation) promoted-team players as preloaded transfers. Even if they start every game, they stand a great chance of being 1pt wonders. It take it (by looking at your grav) that you think Burke is a sure thing?

MID: see my thoughts on Hazard above; personal bias. Mane way overrated, and I don't like Southampton off the bat, but I'll let them convince me then buy in later in the season. Mane's underlying stats do not support his price. Payet, same sentiments as promoted sides... they are only potentials until they prove themselves.

overall, too many punts and unknown PL quantities IMO, but I think your risk tolerance is much higher than mine!

Just checked out that baseline hot topic, really interesting. Couple of points spring to mind: relying on flaky 4.5 options at the back can be super frustrating, however, on the flip side, having those as your auto subs is better than relying on a 5th mid (likely to offer 2-3 points) whereas your 4/5th defenders could offer exposure of up to 5-10 clean sheets a year.

In addition to this point, your 5th mid can only cover your attackers if there's 3 at the back, whereas your 4/5th 4.5 defenders can come in for any of your outfield players.

      If you go

      6.0 6.0 4.5 4.5 4.5
Then you play 2 heavy hitters almost all weeks with your 4.5 rotating depending on the easiet fixture IMO I think there are many decent 4.5 option and besides you will only play one every week with the exception of if your big hitter plays top 4/6 team

      What do you think about this def structure: 7 - 6 - 5 - 4.5 - 4 ?

      Safe is boring but good.

Not sure about NOR defensive prospect despite their early fixture, so not sold on your GK combo. I'm currently going Myhill-Hennessey - I might be wrong though.

Nice mid. Santi orver Ozil imo. Same strikeforce we have atm.

Only reason I've gone Ozil over Caz is I remember Walcott and Ozil working very well when they did play together. But Santi's minutes and pens does tempt me - bound to get a few of them if the likes of Walcott and Bellerin start on the right.

Yea keepers is an issue...but one thing i learned from last season is that keeper rotation doesn't work. So would go 4.5 as keeper of choice and his sub to be safe. If Henessy does move, Myhill-Hennesy will be my pick though.

    Here is a twist

Young has a year left on his current deal and said "A lot of people thought I had [a new deal] done but I haven't. It's in the club's hands now, so I will have to see how it goes. I'm desperate to stay. I hope we can sort things out."

He ended by saying: "I am a player who wants to be playing every week." It's unlikely he will get such guarantees at United next term, so a move could well be on the cards.

Could ADM stay and become a starting LW?
