Jermain Defoe bags a brace as Sunderland chalk up their first win of the summer. Stoke hit Wrexham for six, with Jon Walters scoring twice. Eden Hazard is off the mark as Chelsea fall to defeat in their first pre-season friendly, Spurs triumph over Brentford in a behind-closed-doors showdown, whilst Villa’s fringe players are given the chance to impress.

New York Red Bulls 4 Chelsea 2

The Blues fell to defeat in their pre-season opener, despite goals from Loic Remy and Eden Hazard. Diego Costa went close on a number of occasions in the second period, while Victor Moses’ pace proved a threat throughout the encounter.

Jose Mourinho fielded his troops in a 4-2-3-1 set-up, with a back five comprised of Thibaut Courtois, Branislav Ivanovic, Gary Cahill, Kurt Zouma and Cesar Azpilicueta. Cesc Fabregas and John Obi Mikel sat in the double-pivot, while Bertrand Traore, Oscar and Moses formed the three behind lone striker Remy. The Portuguese boss made ten changes after the break, allowing the likes of Nemanja Matic, Asmir Begovic, Costa and Hazard to get minutes under their belts, but the raft of alterations saw the home side score four second-half goals.

Post-match, Mourinho played down the result and cited his players’ lack of fitness as the reason behind the unexpected loss:

“They gave us a good training session. If we came here and won 10-0 I would not be happy because it would mean it was too easy. We needed the game they gave us. Obviously we needed to play better than we did in the second half defensively, and there were also too many missed chances, but the intention of pre-season matches is to play, to run, to bring intensity back, so no problem. We only started training six days ago.”

Wrexham 0 Stoke City 6

The Potters cruised to victory upon their return to home soil, recording their third successive clean sheet. Jonathan Walters bagged a goal in both halves, while Mame Biram Diouf, Marco van Ginkel, Joselu and Dominic Telford also found the back of the net.

Mark Hughes rolled out his default 4-2-3-1 formation, with Walters, Diouf and Charlie Adam as the attacking midfield three, with on-loan Van Ginkel alongside Glenn Whelan in the double-pivot. Erik Pieters partnered Marc Wilson in central defence, having missed the Singapore tour with a groin complaint.

After the match, the Potters boss heaped praise on Van Ginkel’s display as the youngster (5.5 in FPL) looks to nail down a regular role in light of Steven N’Zonzi’s departure:

“He’s a very good player and we are very encouraged by what he’s shown. He gives us a goal threat and has got good energy. He covered good ground and wants to get into the box and on the end of things, so we are really pleased with that aspect of his play.”

Stoke were once again without captain Ryan Shawcross – the centre-back is still nursing a back injury but his manager remains optimistic he will return to action against Brentford on Saturday:

“We’re hoping he will get some game time this weekend. That’s the intention, we’re hopeful and we think he will be ready for some action. He’s been training all week but he’s just been having a little problem with his back, so he is a little bit behind the other guys. It’s a little bit of a reoccurrence of what he had last season, it’s settled down now so we’re quite comfortable with it and we fully expect him to play at the weekend.”

Toronto FC 1 Sunderland 2

Jermain Defoe did the damage against his former club, netting a second-half brace that sealed the Black Cats’ first victory on their tour of the USA.

Manager Dick Advocaat made four changes to the XI that started against Pachucha, handing Costel Pantilimon his first minutes since he succumbed to injury late in the previous campaign. Patrick van Aanholt and Billy Jones filled the full-back berths, while John O’Shea and Wes Brown partnered up in central defence. A four-man midfield of Sebastian Larsson, Jack Rodwell, Lee Cattermole and Adam Johnson operated behind strike duo Steven Fletcher and Defoe. Jones and Johnson made way for Adam Matthews and Emmanuele Giaccherini at the break as Advocaat made a total of five changes in the second period.

Discussing his display, Defoe (5.5 in FPL) reckons he’s starting to find his form with just over a fortnight remaining until the season gets underway:

“I feel like I needed the pre-season. Today was the sharpest I felt in a long time. It’s still a case of getting our fitness up. But at the same time, you want to be sharp, score goals and win the games. We’ve got a couple of weeks until the season starts and we’ve got two more pre-season games. By the time the season starts, hopefully we’ll be ready.”

Advocaat, meanwhile, confirmed that the Black Cats’ summer signings are still not up to scratch in terms of fitness, though is hopeful that’ll change over the next few days:

“Lens will definitely play against Doncaster (next Wednesday). He’s further along than the others. Coates has only done a week after playing for Uruguay (during the summer). It makes no sense to get injuries. But Kaboul could play as well against Doncaster. Next week we’ll know a little bit more about things.”

Forest Green Rovers 0 Aston Villa 3

What was intended to be an U21 encounter evolved into a useful expedition for a raft of Villa’s senior fringe players, with Nathan Baker, Aly Cissokho, Joe Cole, Kieran Richardson, Charles N’Zogbia and Libor Kozak earning run-outs at the New Lawn Stadium.

Jerrell Sellars was the star of the show, slotting home a penalty before claiming his second of the night with a deft chip over Forest Green keeper Paul White. Aleksandar Tonev supplied the Villains’ other goal, executing an easy finish from an N’Zogbia cross.

Tottenham Hotspur 2 Brentford 1

Spurs triumphed over the Championship outfit in a behind-closed-doors friendly, courtesy of a stoppage-time penalty from Dele Alli. Spurs’ opener also arrived from a spot-kick, with 21-year-old striker Shaq Coulthirst doing the honours in the first half.

Toby Alderweireld was afforded his first start for the club in a back four that also included Kevin Wimmer, Kieran Trippier and Danny Rose. Nacer Chadli, Christian Eriksen and Nabil Bentaleb were the senior starters in midfield, before the likes of Jan Vertonghen, Ben Davies, Kyle Walker, Federico Fazio, Tom Caroll and Mousa Dembele entered the fray in the second period. Harry Kane is yet to feature after returning from a prolonged holiday.

Looks fine. My only quibble is with Lescott, Yoshida and Taylor. Lescott has tough opening fixtures, Yoshida is likely to be replaced by the end of the window, and Taylor isn't a safe starter. I'd swap them for a three way 4.5 rotation. The rest is good though!

Just read the Lucy's post about 8.5 midfielders, and I guess I am one of the most exited here about them, would start with 3-5-2 formation, just want your opinion on 2 options, plus please rate the points advantage in the let's say first 6 GW.

    1) Silva or Sterling
    2) Payet or Hendo/Milner

    thanks

It's a tough one I will only consider Sterling to strengthen my defence, cause there's a 1.0. All I know about Payet that he was an amazing passer last season and in all top leages only Messi did better. I think West Ham will kick off really well.

    Myhill-Hennesey
    Ivan-Bellerin-Mings-Huth-Targett

    Rooney-Aguero-Deeney

Thinking I could remove Rooney and upgrade Deeney to Sakho and get Mane or Depay as well but very unsure about that at the moment.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

How much does your teams balance affect your player choices?

Last season’s winner Dufflinks made several mentions about keeping a balanced team so that he was flexible enough to change things and jump on the form players quickly.

With Ivanovic, Hazard and Aguero coming in at 7m, 11.5m, and 13m respectively, does this make things harder to balance?

Will you start with these players just because they are easy downgrades later on if needed?

Are you wary of not putting any of these players in your team as it may take multiple transfers to get them in? Are you leaving money in the bank just in case?

Do you ignore balance completely, get the players you know you 100% want and then build around them?

Just gonna copy/paste my post from an hour ago as it's relevant.

"I keep finding player price influencing my decision in my initial team selection. For example, I think Benteke will do better than Rooney to begin with but there is something unsatisfying about a front line of Costa - Benteke - Sakho. I think my trouble with this front line is, if you wanna get Kun in your team, you have to get rid of Costa to do so and you lack an alternative way of doing this. In contrast, with a front line of Costa - Rooney - Sakho, you lose out on 2m which could strengthen your defence or midfield, but when it comes to getting Kun in, you have 2 possible alternatives which means that if 1 of Costa or Rooney are firing on all cylinders, you don't have to lose out on 1 of them.

So my question is this: is it better to look at a correct team structure and allocation of funds to begin with, rather than following your belief that Player A will score better than Player B? Does the extra flexibility offered to you trump your own 'guesses' - I use the word 'guess' because even with our knowledge of previous seasons and current fixtures, we have very little knowledge of how the new PL season will unfold.

I know that FPL isn't static and depends who you own when. My point is about structure though - if your funds are allocated 'correctly' then you can jump on pretty much any bandwagon at any time with just the 1 FT, a point which is even more crucial at the start of the season where there is no form to go by and use as a predictor of future returns."

I usually just make the team I want and worry about transfers later but I am taking balance a little more into account this time.

For example I have Hazard and Walcott. With 2 transfers I can make Walcott into a 6.5m/6m mid and Costa into Aguero without needing to wildcard.

It makes me a lot happier about not starting with Aguero (although not too happy!)

The problem is you are also picking Costa on the basis that you think he will score well - if he does indeed do so then do you really want to switch him into Kun? If you have 2 big hitters up front in Rooney/Costa then you have more flexibility if you want to keep 1 of them.

That is why I'm weary about going Costa + Benteke instead of Costa + Rooney, despite not being fully confident that Rooney will do well.

Very good point re having a back up plan for the "guesswork". This will be my initial strategy as you'd like to think you'll get at least some calls right, but you're kidding yourself if you think you won't want to make a crucial change GW2 onwards early. Looking at Deeney for eg if he doesn't fire you're pretty well stuffed for a third striker & have to make an extra transfer to build the funds to get a performing player in. If he does fire, he's an easy downgrade from say a Sakho & there's leftover cash to boot. In short, early transfer flexibility is pretty key for mine esp as I don't want to waste a WC because my preseason "educated guesswork" was wrong on most of my squad.

        This.
Because I don't want Costa and Rooney I expect to do a minus 4 if need be to upgrade to Aguero. I won't though until he has played a full 90 minutes. it could cost me but I expect the Aguero money to earn nearly as much in the first 3 GW's

Beavis asked a similar question on the last post. Such analysing of the finer details!

I'm a big believer in looking at the worst case scenario and dealing with known and controllable variables so the number one goal in picking goal in picking my squad is flexibility. However, I believe the best way to get flexibility is to save as much cash as possible from the least profitable areas such as your bench and second goalkeeper. Base price players all round!

I pay a lot of attention to balance and there are no sacred cows. For both Ivan and Hazard I have bought their cheaper teammates to help balance my team more. And if Bony was starting, I'd do the same for Kun.

It is only my third season, but what I've learnt is very few players will continue their form from last season. That's on of my points when choosing players. I might be wrong but I don't see Chelsea to kick off like they did last year. I will start without all three, and will get Aguero later with 2 transfers. I will start with Fab and get Hazard later. I will sure get a Chelsea defender when their fixtures are better. I have a lot of faith in West Ham this season, so that's one of my gambles. Also I will play 3-5-2, so my midfield is stronger then defence and forwards.

Balance is overrated. If you have a huge frontline of Rooney Aguero Costa you're only 2 transfers away frm restructuring your defence or midfield.

Play the game and get the players YOU think will get the most points

Totally agree. Balance has nothing to do with it. If anything it is more of a hindrance.

Get the top players in not matter what their cost. If they score the most points-they are a necessity.

I suppose I was working on the assumption that most players don't manage to pick the perfect team and therefore end up having to make transfers, the question then becomes how many. If you pick the perfect team and don't ever have to change it then obviously structure becomes irrelevant.

I just save up two trannies and do a triple banger. That gets me back on track again.

You need the main players; balance has nothing to do with anything. If so, play an auto-pick team.

The auto-complete team is the diametric opposite of what I mean by "balance" as expounded in my response to the hot topic below. It seems you're interested enough in my opinion to argue with me, but not interested enough to actually read what I'm saying.

I think it's important to keep potential targets in mind and retain as much one-transfer flexibility as possible, particularly early in the season when nobody really knows who the crucial players will be. In practice this means having at least one premium pick per position and setting yourself up to downgrade players rather than scrabbling about to upgrade. Ivanovic is the ultimate example of this - if you start with Azpi instead you're never in practice going to find the transfers to upgrade him early in the season if you realise you need to.

With the vast number of potential picks in midfield in two broad ranges - 8.5 to 9.0 and 7.0 to 8.0 I think it's like that flexibility in midfield will be of strategic importance this year and I suspect that starting with two 9.0s might be the way to play it as it means you can easily jump on the right 8.5s as they emerge.

Flexibility is the key. I would rather have 15 playing players with 4 premium instead of 12 playing players with 7 premium. No player guarantees point in a given game week. Deciding the timing of the wildcard before time is also not a good idea imo.

Completely disagree. I had a great season last season by having 11/12 playing payers and lots of premiums and having 2-3 bench fodders that were worth under 4m and never played.

The points my premiums made completely outdid the occasional blank from a player.

I like to go a little punty to start with because you could argue that even players that should do well or have done well in the past could have a mare of a season...so everything is a little punty at the start. You can then start to make changes based on form.

Saying that, there is usualy 1 or 2 I assume will be season keepers and have from the beginning..Hazard for example.

In the past I've gone with lots of ubers in defence and gone with an insane midfield and good attack, but this season I'm balancing it out more - the upshot of this in terms of my team is the decision of having Rooney OR Aguero, which is a shame because I'd ideally want both!

If anyone wants to have a look at last year's winner's team and his transfers over the season, here is a link.

I've set up my team to be as flexible as possible this season, primarily to give me several routes to Aguero or Sanchez when I want them. It's pretty easy to afford these players with only two transfers, as a couple of people have said but I've tried to build into those transfer options team coverage as well. So, for example if I take Rooney out for Aguero I'll still have Mata or Depay.

In terms of overall balance I agree with Ruth NZ. Identify key price points and structure your team around them.

I believe that having a good season early-season has nothing to do with your starting 11. It is all about how a manager responds to players' early season form and how he/she adapts. Therefore having a good team balance makes it easier to do this.

Well I think it has a little to do with your starting 11 although granted we are mainly going off guesswork.

You can definitely get some sure starters though to minimise risk.

I reckon go where the value is even if it means you don't have 'balance'.

I have created a team with 'balance' in mind and it isn't bad, the only worry I have is that to upgrade an Arsenal Mid to Sanchez, and Pelle to Aguero (he is my option for the first 3 GW's before bringing Aguero in at GW4) I have to keep 2m ITB for Sanchez and 5 ITB for Aguero = 7m ITB total ...

With that in mind, my team looks like:

      Myhill (Henny)
      Azpi, Francis, Bellerin (Martin, Targett)
      Ritchie, Hendo, Walcott, Hazard (Wanyama)
      Deeney, Rooney, Pelle

Is having that much ITB a risk?

7m does seem like quite a lot! For me I'd rather have that spent (at least some of it) and use the transfers when needed.

          • 11 Years
          10 years, 4 months ago

That's the problem, to spend any of the 7m wouldn't leave the cash to upgrade to Sanchez and Aguero using just FT's

      2. timPgoodwin
        • 11 Years
        10 years, 4 months ago

Sorry - That team above leaves 5M in the bank which is the difference in price between Pelle and Aguero, to leave me 7M I have to down grade Deeney to Ighalo and Ritchie to any 4.5 - Which means playing a 4.5 Midfielder in my first 11 with a 4.5 Mid on the bench too.

I think it's important to just make sure that you identify key players that could do well which aren't in your current team, and have a strategy for getting them in should they seem "essential". That's how I'm going to approach this anyway. Once my final team is decided, I'll construct a spreadsheet with routes into players at different price points in different positions, and make sure I have all bases covered.

    Kosc - Azpi - Cedric - Mings - Saylor
    Hazard - Fabregas - Rambo - Sterling - Westwood
    Rooney - JRod - Deeney

Anyone else feel it may be better to plan for the first few weeks, get in players with good fixtures and wait to see which of the big hitters are on form, you can then bring them in using WC?

I like you're defence, but that might be cos I have 5 out of your 7! Personally, I'm banking on a slow start for Chelsea attacking wise, so Haz & Fab seems like overkill to me...

I love a bit of JRod but I don't know if he'll come out firing at the start of the season - I like it aside from that! The only other worry might be the Fab/ Haz double up, but then again I like a bold manoeuvre!

    Thoughts on this:

    Cech | Elliot
    Ivanovic | Cresswell | Kaboul | Ward | Baker
    Fabregas | Walcott | Depay | Sterling | Aarons
    Aguero | Rodriguez | Grabban

Would like to try squeeze 0.5 from somewhere to upgrade Grabban > Ighalo / Kozák but just can't find it.

I've also looked at this instead:

Sterling, Rodriguez & Grabban > Ritchie, Benteke & Bamford

One more nailed on but maybe not as strong starting 11.

I think Bertrand Traore has a chance of gametime this season. The reason he has at Vitesse the past 2 years was not just to get first team experience but also because he didn't yet have a work permit for the UK. He does now and as soon as he got it Jose called him back and refused to send him out on loan again. He rates him very highly. Traore was excellent last season.

Where would he fit in? Schurrle, De Bruyne, Cuadrado and Salah couldn't get regular game time in that attacking midfield!

Plays as a forward, often wide, but the player himself states he prefers to play as an attacking midfielder

league cup games or as a sub in some PL games. If he does well then who knows. Of course he might not come through this season as it doesn't happen much at Chelsea, but for me, there's a chance.

For the new post......a repeated post about a popular pick who has ars and liv in 2 of his first 4 fixtures.

Sakho's record against the 'big' teams last season:

Chelsea - 0 goals in 2 games (overall score w/ Sakho involvement: Chelsea won 3-0)
Man City - 1 goal in 1 game (overall score w/ Sakho involvement: West Ham won 2-1)
Arsenal - 0 goals in 2 games (overall score w/ Sakho involvement: Arsenal won 5-1)
Man Utd - 1 goal in 2 games (overall score w/ Sakho involvement: Man Utd won 3-2)
Liverpool- 1 goal in 1 game (overall score w/ Sakho involvement: West Ham won 3-1)

3 goals in 8 games despite West Ham losing 5 and drawing 1 of those 8 games.

3 promoted defenders and you can't find a problem with his defence?
Ritchie (a big risk) and Sterling (another unknown) and with Pelle up top?

        Those are the flaws imo

Well, yes, at City he is. We don't kow how they'll set up, how much he'll play, and whether he'll be of any FPL worth.

      Wrong gks.
      Too much money in defence.
      Reasonable midpark.
Cheap and nasty upfront - the one area you can't go uber.

      3/10.

Start from the front and work your way backwards.

Personally, I think that this advice is flawed. Particularly the bit about the front and the goalkeepers.

Balance is key to me. I understand my keepers are costly along with the defence but they are perfect for rotation.

        Pelle is a punt.

          Seen SWN fixtures?

LEI is a gamble with the Tinkerman at the helm.

Pelle is a waste of space. It's the heaviest point scoring part of the game and you want to go cheap?

      good squad
Only question would be about game time of angella -wat seem to have 4 eligible CBs-2 new signs-rotation beckons
-but if changing a 4.5 backstop depending on form before kickoff.....
I would have wilson instead of troy-kinda fixtures imo
      no worries

Cheers - If Angella doesn't play in preseason I can just swap him for Prodl.

Might go for Wilson but I really do bot want to double up on Bournemouth attack

I see people say Hazard is always a slow starter but he got 1 goal and 6 assists in chelsea's first 3 games in his first season.

I personally think he's a more complete player now, a player who will consistently return in games (getting to aguero/suarez level of returns).

Sorry for this, but I feel like I'm losing all sense of whether this is a good team, or whether I've actually damaged it. I think I've been staring at it for too long...

    Panti/Hennessey
    Azpi/Kos/Huth/Francis/Angella
    Fabregas/Walcott/Sterling/Henderson/Fletcher
    Rooney/Costa/Deeney

Any suggestions? Not really happy with Angella or Deeney.

Relax, this team is solid. Well balanced throughout. Also no ones starting 11 comprises of players that are equally satisfying to have. I prefer Wilson over Deeney, but thats it.

Cheers Sparta, I'm just going to close the FPL tab. This is the problem with making a team when the game opens, it leaves so much time to ruin it!

Yea, this year i'm taking my foot off pre-season, as its just a constant stream of changes and tinkering. There no point

Also our teams are very similar, so I HAVE to be a fan

Looks good to me. 2 transfers will get you Kun so you are set.

Hennessey done? I have the almost the same back line.

I would change Sterling to Yaya Touré myself.

Is Prodl a more certain starter? I know nothing really about Watford, or Bournemouth (Deeney vs Wilson was a coin toss). Wilson the better player?

i don't think angella will start.
you can start with wilson and move to deeney in gw2.
i like the mid, although prefer milner to hendo.
