After acquiring the versatile Micah Richards earlier in the transfer window, Aston Villa bolstered their defensive options further with the recruitment of Nice left-back Jordan Amavi on a five-year deal. Upon his arrival at the Villains’ training base, the 21-year-old promised the supporters that he’ll impose his physicality in every encounter:

“I want to play well for this football club. I am determined to do that. I want to make rapid progress. I will be a decisive player. I want to make a big bond with the supporters. On the pitch, I want to connect and be a fan favourite. I will bring my combative nature to the side. I will fight for them every single match. Hopefully they will enjoy that. It’s a fresh challenge and one I can’t wait to embrace. I can’t wait to get started.”

The History

Born in Toulon, France, Amavi worked his way through the youth ranks at Nice from 2010, netting three goals in 30 outings for their reserve outfit. The French defender then made his full debut in the opening fixture of the 2013/14 campaign, before going on to earn a further eight starts that term.

In the wake of Timothee Kolodziejcza’s (Nice’s first-choice left-back at that time) transfer to Sevilla in the summer of 2014, Amavi was afforded much more pitch time during the 2014/15 season. The burgeoning talent missed just two league ties in the last campaign, bagging four goals in the process, though he proved to be something of a card magnet and was booked on 11 occasions.

On the international scene. Amavi has represented France at the U18, U20 and U21 levels but is yet to earn a senior cap.

The Prospects

Given that Amavi is reported to have cost the club £10m, it’s fair to assume that he’ll be immediately handed the left-back berth for the Villains this season. Discussing his new acquisition with the local media, Sherwood is clearly impressed:

”It’s someone we’ve been tracking for a long time. He’s dynamic, gets forward, has a good delivery, and is a decent size for a left-back. He’s quick and aggressive and will be suited to the Premier League. He plays at a high tempo and French football is quite close to the English league so that will help. It will give us competition and will be a decent addition”.

With former skipper Ron Vlaar now having departed after refusing a new contract, only Micah Richards looks nailed on amongst the rest of the Midlands outfit’s rearguard. Having operated as a centre-back in all of Villa’s pre-season matches so far, Richards could be partnered by any one of Ciaran Clark, Nathan Baker, Philippe Senderos or Jores Okore in the heart of defence next term, which somewhat negates his attacking potential.

Elsewhere, Leandro Bacuna has been intriguingly stationed in midfield during the off-season, with Alan Hutton taking up the right-back berth. The Dutchman (5.0) tallied five assists in just 983 minutes in the previous campaign and has been reclassified as a defender this term but if Sherwood keeps him in an advanced role, he could afford us an out-of-position option, with a share of set-pieces heightening his appeal.

The downside is that, like Bacuna, Amavi has been handed a 5.0 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League game, whereas Richards is available for 4.5 by comparison. Nonetheless, Sherwood’s attacking style of play should suit the young Frenchman and afford him license to maraud down the flank on a regular basis.

The France U21 international’s underlying statistics further underline his potential – aside from scoring four times last term, he created 32 chances for his team-mates, which would have placed him eighth in the Premier League for key passes among defenders.

Although Villa ranked third-bottom for goals conceded last season (57), they did managed to rack up ten clean sheets – just one fewer than Manchester United. Interestingly enough, Villa were one of only two sides (Crystal Palace being the other) to register as many victories on the road as they did on home soil. In the West Midlanders’ case, this gave rise to six shut-outs away from Villa Park – only four sides achieved more.

Looking at the fixtures, Villa’s excellent start to the campaign (bou, MUN, cry, SUN, lei, WBA) offers hope of a decent start. With Richards cheaper and Bacuna potentially out of position, though, Amavi will find it difficult to initially stake a claim for our consideration. If he can settle quickly and take advantage of the fixtures, though, the young Frenchman may yet have a part ot play in our Fantasy campaigns.

We have no idea if Chadli will be nailed. Yes, some of his lack of minutes last season was due to his father passing, but not all of them. Most likely first choice but I expect 60 min subs and frequent rotation.

Will JRod be first choice too? Probably, but like Chadli, why risk it in the beginning. He also plays wide. Delivered great returns as an inside forward two seasons ago, but its something to consider. I prefer my strikers to play upfront.

      So A, by default.

Yup. If they buy someone like Austin/Remy(though both QPR and Chelsea dont really look like selling to em) i'd be a little worried. So all depends on who they get in for me. If their away games were any better i'd double up with Payet and Sakho tbh.. tough choosing one

If they buy, I sell, same as Yoshida

I'll figure it out when they do, good chance they wait for Carroll

Remy isn't going anywhere, he will play much more than Falcao

Dont really have space upfront for Sakho since Benteke moved and i've got a mental block regarding Payet. Why is the pricing of the two of them so off? Siggy is the same price as Payet and he's got fpl pedigree. just makes me feel stupid for punting. Anyone who's on here going with Payet despite the price? tbh i've not really ever seen him play

I was just trying to get a 4.5 I know will play for the games that Cech faces Chelsea, Man City, etc and I am not expecting a clean sheet. Especially if my backup like Guzan, Krul, etc, may have an easy match that GW. I don't know of any 4.0M keepers nailed to start.

      Solid enough.

LVG stated Darmian is second choice. Would downgrade to a 4.5.

Walcott will become a headache eventually imo. Would go Ozil for nailedness.

Minor questions about Sterlings gametime too. First choice, but Nasri/Navas/Bony will get some minutes.

      Deeney to Sakho.

im trying to see how i can justify not wc'ing on gw4. There seems several strong reasons why one should. First of all the drastic swing in city's fixtures with the essential aguero likely to be in full swing by then. Secondly the fact we now have to use the WC in the first half of the season. And thirdly once you get in aguero plus most likely another city mid plus say hazard and an arsenal mid its unlikely that a wc can really be justified for the rest of the first half of the season given that so much money will be invested in those key players that are for all intents and purposes season keepers meaning no more drastic changes will be needed to be made in first half barring injuries i.e. I dont see much advantage holding on to it post gw4 till the halfway point of the season.Anyone agree/ disagree? How many are planning to wc gw4? Based on my reasoning i think its best...

The GW 12/13 international break for me..
Set up my defense and attack for the first 12 weeks.. the likes of Sunderland/Lei/Nor/Bour all have good fixtures till then and things go wrong after. Can get in Chelsea players after GW 12 too. If you WC too early you gotta go 30+ gws without a WC if you want to hold it for a DGW/benchboost combo

I see lots of talk about ways to get Aguero into teams with a WC but none about how to add both him and Sanchez, the 3rd highest scorer in FPL. Along with Hazard this duo were the only three players who scored 200+ points yet one is getting forgotten.

Difficult but not impossible. It just means you have to go without anything close to a premium defender

I've played around with it quite a bit and structure below gives you the top trio:

        GK's 9.0
        Defenders 23.5
        Sanchez, Hazard, Aguero,
32.0 for 3 mids and two strikers (27.5 for 2 mids, 2 strikers if you buy a 4.5 mid to start with)

Bearing in mind that come the GW4 WC many lower priced players will be showing form it becomes doable

Costa outscored Hazard on ppm in his first season in the EPL.. expecting big things from him this season. I quite like Ozil at 3.5 less than Sanchez though i'd prob HAVE to make the upgrade in a few weeks time when Sanchez scores a brace

That and Hazard being a notoriously slow starter (2 goals 5 assists combined in the opening 6 games of his three Premier League seasons) are the reasons I'm starting off with Costa. Unless I bottle it on Hazard's % ownership...

I don't see him as a one-hit wonder. If anything the confidence of having Cech in goal and a better base from which to attack Arsenal will score even more goals.

With so many opportunities offered to Sanchez I expect him to score as many if not more points.

Not saying he'll be a one-hit wonder. I think he could get 180-190 points which is far from poor. However, Silva finished in that range and his initial price was 9.0...

Overvalued based on a 3-month run where half the main Arsenal attackers were injured and he was playing 2nd striker mainly. Everything went through him.

Not the same FPL asset when Ozil, Giroud, Ramsey and Walcott are all fit options and Sanchez is playing wide. I doubt he'll score 110 points to every 85 from Ozil for example.

So when the LVG comments came out about Darmian everyone jumped to bin him but no one really came out to say "getting Valencia"

Not a player we've ever got 4 clean sheet points out of before! Scores would all be strong 100+ in year of adding United sheets to him

Yeah, in a nutshell it would seem the situation has been lost in translation but my interpretation is that short term Tony V will be the go to but further down the line Darmian will establish himself.

Given the uncertainty arround Utd's defence and lack of home clean sheets last season, I'd say let's stop the overanaylsing and dismiss Darmian and co. for the forseeable.

I found that comment by LVG odd. Hard to believe they bought him simply as back up to Valencia. I do wonder if perhaps LVG is just trying to motivate them both and get the two of them competing for the position. I’d consider Valencia a rotation risk at best and wouldn’t be at all surprised to actually see Darmian playing regularly

If I didn't have Wijnaldum I'd definitely have Aarons. The kid is showing unbelievable potential if he can nail down a first team spot I think he'll get his own bandwagon. I think Gini will be playing somewhere behind the striker probably left or right I could be totally wrong about that though.

Tbh that assumption is based on what I would do I'd play De Jong in the number 10 Wijnaldum on the right and Sissoko as the box to box (like he plays for France) but I'm not the manager so maybe don't listen to me too much on that one

Ok cheers. Nice for you to have so many midfield options now! I'd be optimistic about the new season if I was a toon fan.

No. Supporting a team is one thing. FPL is another.

Just had a play and can fit a pretty reasonable team with all the so called big hitters

    Ruddy 4
    Ivanovic Huth Francis Coates 4
    Hazard Sanchez Silva Ritchie 4.5
    Kun Wilson Deeney

With gw4 in mind and Bournemouth having strong fixtures

No just people saying how do I fit so and so in a team

Mine would be more rounded, not fussed on Ivan Hazard etc

What do you think of the structure of mine above? I think it's pretty well-rounded and I've some players in mind to fill those gaps 😀

Wilson and Deeney? Bit of a sacrifice to get last years big boys.

Chelsea & Arsenal defense owners.. would you bench them against tougher opposition after investing around 12M on them?

Don't think I'd ever bench a Chelsea defender as even in the tough fixtures they keep it very tight.

RMT, im pretty confident in this one

    Courtoise (4M)
    O'Shea - Cedric - Clyne (Targett / Morgan)
Haz - Walcott - Sterling - Richie (Wanayama)
    Rooney - Benteke - Wilson

2,5 ITB to bring Kun back after GW1 ?
