Watford’s summer overhaul continued in earnest with the capture of Spartak Moscow attacking midfielder Jose Manuel Jurado last week. The 29-year-old – who played under Hornets boss Quique Sanchez Flores during his spell with Atletico Madrid – expressed his delight at the chance to fulfil his dream of playing in the Premier League:

“I am very happy to come to Watford and I want to play right now. The Premier League is one of the best leagues in the world and it’s a dream for a player to come and play here. I am happy to be with Quique again and I hope this season is good for everybody. I want to play in England and Watford is a good opportunity to play in this league, and I like this opportunity.”

The History

Born in Cadiz, a province of Southern Spain, Jurado began his footballing education at Real Madrid, where he spent three successful seasons turning out for the B side. Having netted 13 goals in 95 appearances for the reserve outfit, Jurado earned his league debut with the senior team in October 2005. After notching a further couple of La Liga cameos in the 2005/06 campaign, he made the switch to Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2006.

By virtue of injuries to Maxi Rodriquez and Martin Petrov, Jurado was afforded a regular starting berth during his debut term at the Vicente Calderon Stadium, bagging one goal across 33 outings. After finding his playing time drastically reduced the following campaign (three starts), the Spanish playmaker was shipped out on loan to Mallorca for the 2008/09 La Liga season.

Jurado enjoyed the best period of his career to date with the Balearic club, chalking up nine goals and ten assists in 35 appearances. He subsequently enjoyed an increased role upon his return to Rojiblancos, featuring in every single league tie of the 2009/10 season while amassing seven goals and five assists. A solid attacking output wasn’t enough to earn Jurado a starting berth at the start of the 2010/11 season, leading to his sale to Schalke.

Managing just three goals and six assists from 31 appearances over two years in the Bundesliga, Jurado made the switch to Spartak Moscow in September 2012 in the pursuit of first-team football. An initial loan deal was made permanent just two months into his stay in Russia’s capital, as the former Real Madrid starlet went on to bag three goals and four assists in 18 appearances (30-match season). The 2013/14 campaign proved to be Jurado’s most profitable in the Russian Premier League, harvesting eight goals and two assists across 29 outings. After earning just ten starts in his final season in Russia, Jurado opted for a change of scenery this summer.

The Prospects

The versatile Jurado has typically operated from a central attacking midfield role throughout his career, but he’s also spent a fair amount of time stationed on the flanks – particularly the left. Having played as a number ten for all but six of 32 outings during his debut campaign with Spartak, he alternated between a variety of roles (attacking/centre mid, winger and support striker) in the 2013/14 season, before occupying a left flank berth for nearly half (13/28) of his starts in the previous campaign.

Handed his debut by the club just three days after signing, the Spaniard made an instant impact by providing the assist for Troy Deeney’s winner against Dundee United. Tellingly, he was the only Watford player to be handed 90 minutes on Saturday, which suggests that Flores is keen to build up the playmaker’s match sharpness ahead of the season kick-off.

The Spanish boss has now employed a 4-2-3-1 in all but one of his side’s matches and it’s fair to say there’s plenty of competition for the three slots behind lone striker Deeney. Ikechi Anya and Odion Ighalo also started at the weekend, though the likes of Almen Abdi, Matej Vydra and new boy Steven Burghuis are all tussling for starting berths.

Jurado’s previous stint under Flores may well work in his favour and at a price of just 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he could stake a claim as a viable cheap midfielder. From a Fantasy perspective, Anya – at 4.5 – would be the more budget friendly option, whilst Vydra and Ighalo’s classification as forwards somewhat lessens their appeal.

The Hornets’ early schedule (eve, WBA, SOU, mci, SWA, new) sits on the tougher end of the spectrum, which might deter interest in their favourably priced assets. Indeed, Watford are rated bottom for attacking potential for the first six Gameweeks by our season ticker. For those who fancy Flores’ side to quickly find their feet, though, they alternate home/away with fellow promoted side Bournemouth if you’re looking for a rotation pairing to consider.

Last year WC Final - 14 July
This year CA Final - 4 July

              Last year GW1 EPL - 16 August
              This year GW1 EPL - 8 August

Thats about the same amount of days.
Aguero will be rested unless Pelle wants to start hammering his dodgy Hammstrings and Knees.

He already said that he was only returning to training next week.

Thoughts on my second draft? I think its rather well balanced

    Ruddy - Butland
    Azpi - Cresswell - Huth - O'Shea - Francis
    Fabregas - Sterling - Ozil - Mané - Ritchie
    Rooney - Benteke - Sakho

I'll save you the hassle of a couple expected replies:

    a) "No Hazard" (really worth 2.5M more than Fab? I've had him in since day one but starting to think otherwise.. does leave me with one less captaincy option though)
    b) "Shouldn't have a strong front 8" (I'm more in favour of a more balanced total squad plus it helps that Sakho and Ritchie rotate glorious home games for the first 9 weeks or so)

Other than those feel free to tear it apart 😉

          EXACTLY

in what world is sakho and ritchie WORSE than lukaku/pelle plus a 4.5m is how I argue it

          just doesn't make sense

who gives a flying **** about pounds on the bench if you have the best points on the pitch

That's not strictly comparing apples with apples as you'd bench the 4.5m in practically all games. This would give you 1.5m to upgrade a regular fielded player elsewhere.

um, no it wouldn't... because that's where the 8m player has come from...

Sakho looks to be excellent value so spending the 1.5m on upgrading him to an 8m striker doesn't make much financial sense. But using the 1.5m to upgrade a defender or a Chadli to an Ozil, may be well worth it.

Lot of people told me the same thing last year when I was rotating Siggy and Downing but it worked out really well for me. Was top 500 for better part of the season before dropping a little towards end of the season. There may be some method to my madness

I definitely see both sides of the argument though. I could probably squeeze in Hazard and still deploy the same tactic if I downgrade Sterling to Chadli and Cresswell to Jenkinson. Might be better route

I only think this way at start of season. People use the argument about 4.5 mids all the time but I think at the start you need a balance squad to change up and down when the form players come into view. You can't go anywhere with a 4.5. If one emerges that seems good value by all means then get them, especially once sanchez and aguero get back. But where is the flexibility in these squads to fit those players in?

in two weeks you could easily do sterling to bolaise and rooney to aguero and still look good. or steling to hazard and benteke to whichever cheap striker looks like worth the investment

      9/10

very sim to my team, not in personal (we've actually only got francis, huth, fab, ritchie and sakho the same) but in terms of the balance.

I have explored lots of options and I think this is the balance to go for this year with ritchie and sakho giving me (us) a really nice rotation

if I was being picky I'd say downgrade one of your defenders to a 4m just to give you something in the bank. you'll be playing azpi and cress every week so rotate the other two

If they aren't on the pitch, they may as well be a 4.5, because you wont be seeing their points anyway

Benching 6.5 million and not having rooney/kun/costa in your squad and still hhaving to go light in defence is a sign of problems with your team

he does have rooney in the squad and nobody is starting with aguero

your arguement is nonsense. a 4.5 would be off the pitch EVERY week where as a 6m/6.5 rotation would be off every other week. Nobody is suggesting keeping the same 6m on the bench each week, they are being rotated for fixtures

by that rational, why don't people have a defence that reads:

            6m 6m 5m 4m 4m

Very, very similar to my squad. In the end, I downgraded Ritchie to a 4.5m but am still considering a Sakho rotation.

Can I suggest you sway Cresswell to Jenkinson. He'll have practically no ownership because he is ineligible vs Arsenal, so chances of price rises later. 😎

I'd want Hazard over Fabregas purely from a captain perspective, though.

obviously he'd scrap his entire team in a wild card just to get a 4.5 and ensure this NEVER EVER HAPPENED AGAIN

benching points is part and parcel of the game. It doesn't matter who you bench, almost every week there will be one player on there who should have made your first eleven

          • 15 Years

Thats a risk you take obviously but by playing the strength of the fixtures you'd hope that with the strong home fixtures there'll be a greater likelihood they player on the pitch will perform better

First 8 games with that rotation gives you:

AVL LEI BOU LEI NEW SUN NOR WAT (benched games would be ars liv whu liv nor mcy stk sun)

Also in case you actually need your bench player to come on in the event of an injury or no show then at least you have a quality option and not a max 2 points from Wanyama/Anya/etc

Like it! I'd still consider Chadli > Depay or similar 8.5m mid.

You may also want to weigh up whether you're going to stick with the excellent 4.5m GK rotation, or afford Courtois week in week out by doing:

        Francis > Targett

        Ruddy + Butland > Courtois + 4m

        🙂

Gk looking great, but for myself I'm going for pants and henne because I'm planning on using WC early. Dont know when but I guess my team needs changes after 3-4 GW. But thats just me:)

Defence needs some changes imo. Not a fan of promoted teams in def. Wait and see till you know if their def can handle the PL. Also change ward with huh maybe, based on fixtures. Newcastle def are wait and see. Maybe do van aanholt-> oshea and use those.5 another place. Maybe consider cedric and williams or 5.0 west ham def. BUT I think sunderland def would look sweet by the look of their fixtures.

Weak mid. Hazard is good, but sanchez not nailed for first GW and you should consider replacing one or even both to ozil/fab to improve mahrez and larsson.

Good attack, maybe wait with augero and see if he is going to get playing time the first GW. I have a feeling he's going to sub the first match to be fit for chelsea, but when we look at previous seasons the first GW , even coming of at sub aguero is deadly

I agree as Bertrand is out for 2 or 3 Game wks

        = Cedric - Fonte- Yoshida - Targett.

Soton have 4 easy games in the 1st 5 wks.

I have also put Pellè in my team (instead of Benteke) cos:

Easy games to start with, scoring freely in pre-season, already tested as would have played x2 Europa qualifying games & started last season off scoring freely.

What do you think about putting Pellè in your team?
