Watford’s summer overhaul continued in earnest with the capture of Spartak Moscow attacking midfielder Jose Manuel Jurado last week. The 29-year-old – who played under Hornets boss Quique Sanchez Flores during his spell with Atletico Madrid – expressed his delight at the chance to fulfil his dream of playing in the Premier League:

“I am very happy to come to Watford and I want to play right now. The Premier League is one of the best leagues in the world and it’s a dream for a player to come and play here. I am happy to be with Quique again and I hope this season is good for everybody. I want to play in England and Watford is a good opportunity to play in this league, and I like this opportunity.”

The History

Born in Cadiz, a province of Southern Spain, Jurado began his footballing education at Real Madrid, where he spent three successful seasons turning out for the B side. Having netted 13 goals in 95 appearances for the reserve outfit, Jurado earned his league debut with the senior team in October 2005. After notching a further couple of La Liga cameos in the 2005/06 campaign, he made the switch to Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2006.

By virtue of injuries to Maxi Rodriquez and Martin Petrov, Jurado was afforded a regular starting berth during his debut term at the Vicente Calderon Stadium, bagging one goal across 33 outings. After finding his playing time drastically reduced the following campaign (three starts), the Spanish playmaker was shipped out on loan to Mallorca for the 2008/09 La Liga season.

Jurado enjoyed the best period of his career to date with the Balearic club, chalking up nine goals and ten assists in 35 appearances. He subsequently enjoyed an increased role upon his return to Rojiblancos, featuring in every single league tie of the 2009/10 season while amassing seven goals and five assists. A solid attacking output wasn’t enough to earn Jurado a starting berth at the start of the 2010/11 season, leading to his sale to Schalke.

Managing just three goals and six assists from 31 appearances over two years in the Bundesliga, Jurado made the switch to Spartak Moscow in September 2012 in the pursuit of first-team football. An initial loan deal was made permanent just two months into his stay in Russia’s capital, as the former Real Madrid starlet went on to bag three goals and four assists in 18 appearances (30-match season). The 2013/14 campaign proved to be Jurado’s most profitable in the Russian Premier League, harvesting eight goals and two assists across 29 outings. After earning just ten starts in his final season in Russia, Jurado opted for a change of scenery this summer.

The Prospects

The versatile Jurado has typically operated from a central attacking midfield role throughout his career, but he’s also spent a fair amount of time stationed on the flanks – particularly the left. Having played as a number ten for all but six of 32 outings during his debut campaign with Spartak, he alternated between a variety of roles (attacking/centre mid, winger and support striker) in the 2013/14 season, before occupying a left flank berth for nearly half (13/28) of his starts in the previous campaign.

Handed his debut by the club just three days after signing, the Spaniard made an instant impact by providing the assist for Troy Deeney’s winner against Dundee United. Tellingly, he was the only Watford player to be handed 90 minutes on Saturday, which suggests that Flores is keen to build up the playmaker’s match sharpness ahead of the season kick-off.

The Spanish boss has now employed a 4-2-3-1 in all but one of his side’s matches and it’s fair to say there’s plenty of competition for the three slots behind lone striker Deeney. Ikechi Anya and Odion Ighalo also started at the weekend, though the likes of Almen Abdi, Matej Vydra and new boy Steven Burghuis are all tussling for starting berths.

Jurado’s previous stint under Flores may well work in his favour and at a price of just 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he could stake a claim as a viable cheap midfielder. From a Fantasy perspective, Anya – at 4.5 – would be the more budget friendly option, whilst Vydra and Ighalo’s classification as forwards somewhat lessens their appeal.

The Hornets’ early schedule (eve, WBA, SOU, mci, SWA, new) sits on the tougher end of the spectrum, which might deter interest in their favourably priced assets. Indeed, Watford are rated bottom for attacking potential for the first six Gameweeks by our season ticker. For those who fancy Flores’ side to quickly find their feet, though, they alternate home/away with fellow promoted side Bournemouth if you’re looking for a rotation pairing to consider.

Here is another way to look at transfer value for said players.

The likes of Sterling and Shaw were bargains because they will spend the next 10-15 years at their clubs. Divide their transfer fee by those years and they become very good value.

I agree. He's a no risk option because if he doesn't fulfil his potential he's still a very good player. I do believe at a bigger club and with champions league football he will fulfil his potential.

I'm certain he's better than Navas. Nasri has his moments.

Just can't see anyone staying at City for 10 years. Not even a GK. Certainly not a manager. My prediction is that if Sterling proves to be world-class for more than 2 consecutive seasons, he will be off to Barca or Real. If not, he'll go to West Ham or Arsenal. Either way, he's at MC for 5 years, tops.

He might go to Barca and RM that is true. But if he does he'll go for a lot more than 49m so City will actually gain value. Remember my original point to this discussion.

Also he will need to regress a long way for him to drop down the the likes of Villa. At his age and with his talent I can't see that happening.

I think its a fair assumption that Sterling and Shaw will be with their clubs for a long time to come, especially when they are good enough to start for their respective clubs at 20. Only Barcelona and RM could be an improvement on what they have.

That probably just means you don't know them well, Ryan.

Shaw has proven nothing. He has played 1 good season in the PL for a mid-table team without any pressure.

Sterling's price is based on the player he "might" become. He's nowhere near world class yet. So if he does develop into a great player then yeah it's excellent value. If not then he's the next Andy Carroll. Apart from a select few players in the world, for £49m you can buy the finished product, free of risk.

Shaw hasn't done anything to make me believe he'll be the next great English lb, but he's still young.

Shaw was injured a lot and things weren't going well with Sterling because he was asked to play either as a RWB or a striker, neither of which is his natural position.

LW is is territory. Preseason's been a good indicator of that. He's got great technique coming in off the left. I honestly think he can give Hazard a run for his money this year.

While I agree with most of that, it still remains that they both had poor seasons.

Shaw still got a fair few games and wasn't anything to write home about. It's worrying in itself that such a young player is picking up so many niggles. Lvg also made a couple of comments about the guy's lack of fitness which is odd for a kid that age.

But that's unrealistic in itself - what's to say sterling/shaw will become top players? not much. what's to say they'll be at city/united in 10 years? not much either

I think it was a more realistic approach when there was more stability amongst transfers - like when Rooney/Rio signed at young ages for big money; we knew they'd be at United for most if not all their career

you shouldn't talk up united; it doesn't suit you

I disagree too. Rio's drugs ban could have been worse. Rooney could have easily gone off the wagon when the GILF stuff came out. Apparently in today's football money taking into account PL tv deal inflation, Rooney's 2004 transfer value today would be approx 70 mill. looks cheap looking back but its a false perspective

For every SWP there is a Lampard, Rio, Rooney and Gerrard. When a club puts in that sort of money on the table they are serious about developing them into fantastic players and excellent players for England. They wouldn't fetch that much of a transfer fee if they were just another 'promising talent'. They have already shown they are good enough to start against the best opposition. That is the clincher.

That's just it though, there are so so many more examples that never materialise compared to the ones that do like the Rooneys, Lampards etc either through failure to develop, being overestimated to begin with or through injury.

Injuries are unpredictable anyone can have a career ending injury so I don't see this as an issue for big clubs like United or City.

There are differences between various young players. Some are good enough to start a champions league game and some aren't. Sterling and Shaw are both good enough to start in those encounters so thats a pretty big sign to suggest they are likely to succeed.

Well, now we come down to it. I think that's just plain wrong. Rooney was absolutely outstanding when he signed for United. Ferdinand was the stand-out defender in England already (before JT came on the scene) and had made a success of an £18m move to Leeds.

Sterling and Shaw are not that level of player. They might become that and they might not.

Well, if LVG likes him now (which seems to be the mood music) and he starts regularly he could be great value at 5.5 then. Don't think Blind may get some games at LB?

Blind has been playing as a LCB. It seems LVG favours a left footer there now but Rojo will probably be the main CB in that position. LVG has already put Blind in the DM category this season so he'll be competing for a spot there.

                        @ Dino

The less budget you have on the bench the more is playing for you. If that doesn't help you achieve more points you are probably doing something wrong.

Of course it's true (as you said) that what counts is the points scored by the players you field. But if you have £20m benched and a team with Mane wouldn't you have a better chance with £18m benched and a team with Silva?

              Past 5 years?!

Sterling had a poor season last year. Excellent in 2013/14. A decent 2012/13 where he was never guaranteed starts.
Shaw had one very good season in 2013/14 and wasn't guaranteed starts the year before that. Last season he barely featured.

Rio on the other hand transferred to United from a top 4 club, was one of the best defenders in the PL with CL experience and had already justified a 18m price take prior to the United switch.

What was so poor about sterling's season last year? What was it 7 goals and 10 assists and almost 3 months of it playing rwb? He was one of the top midfielders in the game for dribbles chances created and most fouled players and all this as a 20 year old in a team with no striker and you say he had a poor season? ? ?

I agree with a lot of what your saying but I'd not put shaw in Sterling's league.

Sterling created the the joint top most chances from play in the big five leagues in calendar year 2014. That is not potential that is end product, just because he had cap finishers in his team should not diminish his achievement. He was level with Hazard in this metric and us years younger than him. Excellent signing with a great attitude imo and right up there with Rooney when he signed for Utd.

Azpi Cederic regular picks. See if O'shea or Huth rotaes well. If not find a good 4.5 rotating pair. But you would have to sell Targett soon. His price may drop.

What do people think of Sunderland's new signing of JERMAIN LENS ( 6.5 mln) . His classified as a midfielder bur cud equally be a forward as scores goals. Sun have the easiest start in the PL.

      That's so silly it's laughable.

It's like saying that if you have Aguero, Costa, Rooney, Hazard, Sanchez and Silva in your team you will score the most points. It's probably true. It's also impossible.

Sorry forgot to add my thoughts:

Anxious about all this sterling hype. Like will he even start? Like will he actually start every game?
Why does no one seem to mention last year when aguero was away and silva was on fire.
I'm ignoring hazard and hoping fab has his usual early form.
Benteke to me seems the best option at 8.5 with the alternatives being giroud and lukaku.
I'm wary of Walcott rotation once Sanchez is back.
I'm also not sure if there is anyone better than clyne at 5.5 or O'Shea at 4.5...???
      Any help hugely appreciated lads

        He will start.
Silva will compliment Aguero and Sterling.
        Good luck with that.
        Definitely Benteke
        Easy downgrade to Ozil
        Mertesacker, Shaw. Keep O'Shea.
